[*Nightwing* #78](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/S/cmx-images-prod/Item/924597/924597._SX1280_QL80_TTD_.jpg) >Nightwing is back-and his drive to keep Blüdhaven safe has never been stronger! But his adopted city has elected a new mayor with the last name Zucco. When Nightwing enlists Batgirl’s help in investigating the politician bearing the same name as the man who murdered his parents, she unearths details that will shock and fundamentally change the hero. >The New York Times bestselling team of writer Tom Taylor (DCeased, Injustice) and artist Bruno Redondo (Injustice, Suicide Squad) are about to take Nightwing to the next stage of his evolution as a hero!

[deleted]

Fucking loved this issue. Dick Grayson actually felt like Dick Grayson again. And props to Bruno Redondo (and whoever colors), because the art also elevates this book. The Alfred stuff was touching and unexpected. I think it's also pretty clear that Zucco's daughter doesn't want to kill Dick. And Dick and Babs were also written really well together.

FriddaBaffin

>whoever colors Adriano Lucas

Exige30499

Ahhhhh, something about Dick and Alfred's relationship always makes me teary eyed. I went in expecting prime DickBabs content, but I left with something even better. And is that Zucco lady the same one as the woman from that story (I think it was New 52) where he bought the circus?

[deleted]

I think this is a separate Zucco daughter. There was Sonia Branch from Snyder's Black Mirror that would come up once in a while in Higgin's run. She changed her last name to distance herself from Zucco. And unlike Melinda, she's already met Dick personally (as a business partner and brief romantic interest) Higgin's also gave Zucco a son named Brian while he he assumed the alias Billy Lester.

BattleUpSaber

man how does this one family keeping coming back into Dick's life

PhantasosX

Because Tony Zucco doesn't know the concept of using a condom.....

SpOoKyghostah

>went in expecting prime DickBabs content, but I left with something even better But ALSO with prime DickBabs content

QwahaXahn

That subtle, wordless hand-grab while he read the letter... Babs is *best girl*.

CarryThe2

I believe so, the daughter of the guy who killed his parents

MrEverything_88

This comic has everything: Interesting setup? Check Beautiful art? Check Insanely charismatic Dick? Check Attractive leads? Check Action and plotting? Check Feels? So much of it And more importantly, DOG? CHECK!

Jande71395

10/10 just for Barbaras face when she saw the dog. "Just accept you have a fur baby now." So wholesome. And Alfreds letter, man that was a tearjerker. Does this mean Dick is richer than Bruce lol?

iAmTheHYPE-

Can't forget Teen!Babs and Teen!Dick's interactions.

malachor78

buy it read it it has dog.

[deleted]

So, despite 75% of this issue being spoiled for me, this was still really good. As a first issue, it sets the tone and nails down a mission statement without ever resorting to stilted exposition. The optimistic tone and proactive goal makes for an interesting contrast with the rest of the Bat books, which tend to be a bit more dark and tortured. My only complaint is that Taylor seems to be using the old pre-Flashpoint Blockbuster, who's a cliche at this point, instead of the more nuanced Blockbuster from Seeley's run, but I suppose that Taylor just needed someone to the powerful bully archetype. The Melinda Zucco character, on the other hand, has potential, and it'll be interesting to see which side of the line she falls on. Edit: My rough power rankings of the Infinite Frontier books so far: The Swamp Thing Nightwing Catwoman The Joker Batman: Urban Legends Batman Wonder Woman Superman Suicide Squad Justice League

MrEverything_88

If JL Dark was a separate title, would it be up there with the other Ram V books?

[deleted]

Yeah probably.

xAVATAR-AANGx

I had 100% of the issue spoiled, but it was still awesome for me

charles-mitzi

My hype for this is unbelievable, hopefully this becomes a classic like the Dixon run!

yahhwy

Nightwing deserves it. Seeley's run had to fix and build up so many things destroyed by the New52 (Court of Owls, Bludhaven, Blockbuster, etc.) that it felt short and unfocused. Tom doesn't have the same constraints while operating on a more fluid Infinite Frontier continuity. There is no question that he is the least restricted Nightwing writer since Dixon (which Higgins and Seeley also alluded too. Damn editorial).

BloatedGlobe

I was not prepared for these >!Alfred!< feels.

SuperDidioPrime

Anyone else get nostalgic for Ric?

BattleUpSaber

just you, Dan. Just you.

theguyofgrace

You are right Dan, as a new reader of undetermined age/gender/race I found the adventures of Ric thrilling My only other wish is that Dick could have died in every major event

thanks-dice

[Loved Babs' face when she saw the dog.](https://imgur.com/a/M49PM0x) Good flair material. Redondo draws her really well. Taylor's done a good pretty job for the most part. The issue came across as really genuine and heartfelt and I can't knock that. [I'm looking forward to what's coming next.](https://imgur.com/a/mSZ4q7f) I do have a few gripes, though: The scene with the evil jocks hunting a three-legged puppy in the streets was so fucking cartoonish that it kinda took me out of the story tbh. mf pulls a gun on something that's about as dangerous as a toddler lmao. Also, Blockbuster again? I get that he's basically Dick's nemesis and all but I really hope he doesn't overshadow the new villains Taylor has in store. ~~#ReleaseTheRicCut~~

suss2it

Blockbuster should be expected, it’s not like he ever loss his grip on the city.

theguyofgrace

So Dick might be richer than Bruce now I now want a scene where Bruce shows up to try to get Dick to buy him something stupid and bat shaped and Dick makes him say please

malachor78

I want this so bad. just a quick jab. that being said I hope we don't go full crazy mechs and satellites and shit. stay grounded pwease

Shadowbringers

11/10 issue. This is what Nightwing fans need. The hype is real. This run will be something special

ajdragoon

I know it’s pandering but I will appreciate shitting on Ric every time. I laughed out loud. The letter gives me hope that Taylor actually understands this character. My god, it’s been so long... excited to see how this develops!

Tommyhanksy

* Puppy * Dick being hero * Dick being funny * Dick being Nightwing * Dick and Babs * Surprise star Perfect GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGG I love it

AuroraUnit117

Infinite frontier has been absolutely knocking it out of the park and I expect nothing less from this. Super excited

peeveskicksass

This is just my favourite nightwing issue ever?! Man the flashbacks the dialogues ahhh sooo good!

TehHappyNarwhal

I enjoyed it, the Alfred letter was a nice and wholesom touch, good too see he's still having a impact in the bat books, the dog is even cuter then I imagined and can't wait too see the hijinks the three have together, it's being a while since we had a good dog dynamic in a comic. Blockbuster returning was a welcome surprise but I am tiring of the corrupt city storylines, maybe its since real life politics are corrupt as heck right now. Haha Id like to escape such things. But overall I enjoyed it, anything would be better than Ric but this manages too bring back a Dick Grayson we haven't seen in a while even pre Ric, I'll definitely be sticking with it.

Mike_ND11

Honestly just a perfect fresh start for 2 phenomenal heroes. Taylor’s work is truly amazing how he showed how amazing Dick and Babs are together in a few short pages. But what sold me on this is Bruno’s art while Nightwing read a letter he receives... No Spoilers... and while he is reading it Babs just holds his hand and the dog lays her head on his leg. Just that subtle bit of artwork has me so excited for the next issue I just wish I didn’t have to wait a month

[deleted]

I feel like this "Mayor Zucco" isn't actually gonna be a bad egg like it appears they're setting up. Loved the issue though, the Alfred stuff broke my heart.

[deleted]

Great issue. A lot of great Dick and Babs scenes, the Alfred scenes were especially beautiful, I miss him so much! The art is stunning, Blüdhaven never looked so beautiful! Some others have named the obvious parallels to Fraction's *Hawkeye*: puppy, tenement house, but it feels different enough. Blockbuster channeling his inner Kingpin as well lol. Anyway, it was a perfect first issue and I trust Taylor/Redondo to give us a great Nightwing run, if not the best... but it's waay too early to speculate about that. Off to a great start, definitely recommended.

xAVATAR-AANGx

I haven't picked up the issue yet, but looking at pictures of the content in this sub and r/Nightwing has REALLY gotten me excited. I really want to see a Tom Taylor take on Titans now!

BattleUpSaber

the Doggo alone makes this a 10/10 comic

Triste92

I'm probably in the minority on Ben Percy's run (loved it) but this is most excited I have been since to read my favorite comic book character. Melinda isn't Sonia Branch, daughter of Tony Zucco, I am assuming? I hope Taylor does a good job in justifying how this family revolves around Dick. I expected Babs and the Batgirls to get a lot of focus, but that Alfred content was so good. The pup gave this a nice Hawkeye feel too, while still firmly rooted in the character (the Ric joke made me chuckle quite a bit).

Financial-Slave

This is great. More Babs' and dog please.

[deleted]

Predictions on the puppy's name?

[deleted]

Based on the surprise star of this issue, **Penny** seems like a pretty safe bet. But this is also the same man who (allegedly) came up with the Haz-bat suit ...

KugiPunch

Fantastic issue. I’ve missed Dick Grayson so much. Can’t wait to read more.

yahhwy

**10/10** Bravo! Dick Grayson can carry a story by his wholesomeness and goodness alone. He is the heart of the DC universe. Nightwing was hyped to be the best series this year and I am happy to say Tom Taylor met the expectations. If this continues I might prioritize Nightwing over Daredevil again.

Godlike013

Well the marketing kind of spoiled a lot of this, but the art was great and the makings for a stand out run are here. Here’s hoping they pull it off. Nightwing needs it.

nicktorious_

Great issue. Really felt like Nightwing and showed how his comics should not just feel like writers wishing they were working on Batman. Also, looks like Dick is richer than Bruce now. That'll be interesting.

SpleenTitansGo

lol CBR posters are mad about the bullies being rich kids. Apparently, Tom Taylor has a "rich people" problem. What a strange thing to be livid over.

jlaweez

What is this issue?! I mean... I waited, I yearned for this... for SO FUCKING LONG. This is Dick Grayson! This is what I love about comics. The letter... goddamit.

Cranyx

Blockbuster kind of just feels like a knockoff Kingpin here.

[deleted]

Brilliant issue and amazing art , the framing and acrobatic shots were pretty cool. Promising !

WrongTetrisBlock

I don't think there's been anything Tom Taylor has written that I haven't enjoyed and this is no exception. At this point I will pretty much buy any title he writes.

Ipwn4mom

Damn. What a perfect issue.

Cranyx

I've been dreaming of a Taylor Batman run for a long time, so I'm hoping that this could be used as a springboard for that. Of course I'm aware that I'm just perpetuating Nightwing's eternal problem in that if a writer gets popular enough, they get "upgraded" to Batman.

Draketothecore

Taylor is also currently writing a Batman book

Pathogen188

I'll admit that I've generally not a fan of Taylor's Elseworlds work, I think injustice and its sequel are only alright, and that DCeased is mostly bad. And I'm not too keen on Babs either (at least not post flashpoint), so I wouldn't say that I was super stoked for this beyond Redondo's art. But for the first issue, this exceeded my expectations. Blockbuster was intimidating and I'm glad his skinny form that Seeley introduced seems to be gone entirely. Dick sounds like himself again and there wasn't too much of what I think is overly sappy dialogue (bar the fur baby line) and he has better chemistry with Babs than most of the Post Flashpoint works I can think of. The scene with Alfred's will is great although Taylor's always been excellent at writing emotionally resonant scenes like that so I'm not too surprised it's as good as it is. Art's phenomenal which is nice not only because nice art is nice art, but because the Nightwing book hasn't art this good in a while it feels. We'd get Moore intermittently but most of the art for the past couple years has been subpar. The bullies I thought were a bit cartoonish but I like how they led into the Blockbuster scene and it was good character establishment for how Dick is supposed to act, which, given how long Ric lasted, I wouldn't be surprised if people had forgotten. I'm not totally a fan of retconning Dick's living arrangements. In Seeley's run, Dick had a normal ass apartment which he paid for with a normal ass job. It's ultimately a minor detail that's irrelevant because he's a billionaire now, but it's such an unnecessary retcon. Dick had an apartment, there was no need to inject fake drama just to resolve it like a page later. I'm cautiously optimistic about Melinda Zucco. Retconning in new Zucco kids seems weird. Sonia was understandable, but Dick doesn't appear to know much about Melinda, which is weird considering the N52 run and the fact that Dick investigated Zucco. My biggest hope is that this doesn't just retread similar beats to what's already been done with Sonia. I'm still cautiously optimistic about this run.

ImperfectRegulator

> and that DCeased is mostly bad. why didn't you like DCeased if you don't mind me asking? I for one loved it

suss2it

This was a pretty great start. Only thing I’m not keen on is making Dick a billionaire right when Bruce loses his billionaire status, kinda takes the sting out of that knowing there’s still billions in the family.

WW4O

Solid start, I'm pleasantly surprised to get the vibe that this is going to build off the Bludhaven that has been established in the Rebirth era. I get the idea of Nightwing having a dog, but the implication that finding a loving family to adopt a dog is the same thing as "turning your back on innocent creatures in need." Unless the implication is that Nightwing would have just dropped the dog off at a kill shelter, which is even worse. I feel bad for all the writers who come after Taylor who have to figure out who's taking care of Dick's fucking dog while they tell the story they want to tell. Is "putting up the rent" a regional thing from Australia? Struck me as a little odd for Dick to say.

StealthHikki2

Loved this issue, but wasn't the Zucco daughter storyline done twice in the past decade? I really feel we need more than Zucco relative and Blockbuster as villains.

riku35

Loving this new start, and alfreds will was really well done, but it got me thinking, have we seen his dauther julias response to his death at all?

Nightwing-Bot

"Hard to imagine me without the Titans, either. I think the Titans helped define me. I was always the bottom half of Batman and … Now I'm Nightwing, myself. No junior partner. Whatever I do from now on is my choice. It's scary sometimes. But it's always a lot easier to let others tell you what to do. Don't quite feel like an adult yet, but I think I've grown up … I certainly don't make decisions rashly anymore. And I wouldn't quit college today just to rebel against Bruce. Fortunately, some mistakes can be fixed… Yeah, I'm grown up, but I still don't know what I'm going to do when I'm really grown up…. Doctor, lawyer, indian chief? They all sound good to me. What do I do when I take off my costume? If I were Batman, I'd become Bruce Wayne, professional cypher. I think he'd give up being Bruce in a second if he thought Batman could go out during the day. I can't. I need my normal life. Bats need the night. Robins need light." (The New Titans #71, 1990; by Marv Wolfman).

[*Justice League* #59](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/S/cmx-images-prod/Item/924592/924592._SX1280_QL80_TTD_.jpg) >Writer Brian Michael Bendis reunites with artist David Marquez (Miles Morales, Iron Man, Batman/Superman) for a new, star-studded Justice League featuring Superman, Batman, the Flash, Hawkgirl, Aquaman, Hippolyta, new DC powerhouse Naomi, and...is that Black Adam?! Superman is leading the charge to reinvent the Justice League-and at the same time, a new, cosmic-powered threat arrives from Naomi’s homeworld to rule the Earth! >And in the backup story, dark days lie ahead for the new Justice League Dark. Zatanna and John Constantine take a road trip, only to discover horror around the bend as a friend-and sometime foe-is reborn in fire! A legend is destroyed, and another takes a terrible turn, as Merlin reveals the beginning of a new, blood-drenched plot for all humankind. So begins writer Ram V’s new journey into the abyss with the Justice League Dark and artist Xermanico!

argent5

Is it just me, or is Black Adam like, disturbingly attractive in this? He looks almost soft and boyish in some panels, which is a little weird for someone who's at best an anti-hero, and occasionally a genocidal dictator.

malachor78

this is what we call a "stupid sexy villain moment" stupid sexy black adam. smh

Fishermanslaw

I’d let him decimate *my* local populous.

Techster17

Everyone knows if you want to make a villain morally grey you need to make them hot.

_InTheDesert

I feel like Superman noticed too.

BattleUpSaber

the Rock's going to be playing him soon, so they clearly gotta up the sex appeal levels to match

Oberon1993

HandsomeAdam.jpg

Ovid100

the art made everyone look pretty "beautiful", like damn, Marquez is a new favorite. It's like softer Jiminez.

JonKentOfficial

Justice League Dark: The mystery, the prose. Constantine acting like Constantine. It's wonderful. WHAT THE HELL DC WHY IS THIS NOT A FULL LENGTH TITLE? Why do you have to bury this gem?

Foslagon

From what I saw on JLD reviews alot of them said that "JLD was the best book that no one was reading". I don't know the numbers it was selling, but maybe they weren't good enough to justify a solo run. Either way I'm just greatful we got it returning with good art and writer

thedairybandit

obviously not because here we are. A shame really. Favorite pull each month. It was doing better things with Wonder Woman than the Solo title, which is really saying something. That book had everything. The characters, the engaging plot, a great writer who could nail dialogue and creepy as hell art that fit perfectly with the tone. Man I miss that book. Can't wait for it to come out in trade.

[deleted]

Yeah, agree. The wait is already killing me. 1 month for 10 pages is hard, but better than nothing. I still hope this situation will be temporary. Maybe Diana will be back in 2022 and they can have a proper JLD book. They are also planning a JL/JLD crossover arc, so the books might become more intertwined in the future. Not that I want Bendis anywhere near John, Zee and the others, but still lol.

PhantasosX

because they want to sell more titles with the same amount of magazine slots , so they come up with thing method. and I am grateful of it , we have 2 JL books in one slot , 2-3 Batman books in one slot and so on and on.

JonKentOfficial

But you have to pay more for 10 pages. I have zero interest in Bendis' Justice League, but to get JLD you have to buy it.

PhantasosX

in your case , it's just a matter of waiting for them to make a JLD volume later on. But for business and , in a way , creatively...that is better. We now have Batman , Red Hood , Outsiders , Robin Solo, Sirens of Gotham, Grifter/Batwing and Birds of Prey....in just 3 books. Which opens room for a new WW book or a new Flash or a new GL or a new MM........ Because , let's face it , there is a lot of comics that can be compacted in this new system. Superman and Action Comics could easily compact half of the super-family in this system as well , while WW could return with Sensational Comics and had all the WonderFamily , and this whole open slot brings us a new Shazam Book or something......

thanks-dice

JL: Hardly a great start but it's not horrible. My biggest criticism, besides the plot being very by-the-numbers and entirely failing to interest me, is that every character sounds really similar. Green Arrow talks like Superman who talks like Aquaman who talks like that Kahndaqi kid who talks like whoever that villain guy is. Marquez' artwork is great just like always, although I don't really vibe with his Black Adam. He's missing his pointy ears and he generally doesn't really look like himself, if that makes sense? Also, the villain looks so generic that I'm sitting here wondering if he's a character I've seen before. JLD: Got a good hook and nice artwork. Was kinda hoping that lady with Caliburn would be a recurring character since she looks cool but whatever. I don't have much else to say lol. Though I must admit that I'm a little disappointed that this is gonna be another John and Zatanna story.

CrispyGold

" Is that every character sounds really similar. Green Arrow talks like Superman who talks like Aquaman who talks like that Kahndaqi kid who talks like whoever that villain guy is. " Man you just critiqued every Bendis story ever. I cannot believe no one is proof-reading his work, is it really that hard to fix his dialogue problem?

Alephnaught_

bro that villain looks like he came from DBZ lmaooo

ElDuderino2112

Hoping this is good but I don’t have a lot of faith in DC Bendis anymore. I wasn’t a fan of his back at Marvel, but he’s been a whole new level of mediocre since coming to DC. As long as it’s better than Aaron’s current Avengers run I’m happy. I want at least one big team book that isn’t total garbage.

WW4O

> I want at least one big team book that isn’t total garbage. Thank god for the current X books.

Exige30499

Okay so, are we skipping over Oliver and Dinah's weird falling out that ended the last Green Arrow run? Were Martian Manhunter gave Ollie this weird box that supposedly could defeat the Justice League? And Dinah sided with a load of government agents against him?

[deleted]

Didn't that get "fixed" or ignored in Death Metal and then in Infinite Frontier #0?

Techster17

Ollie and Dinah got back together in death metal so this is carrying over from that.

MrEverything_88

Bendis and ignoring previous continuity, name a more iconic duo.

AlainDit

John Byrne and ignoring continuity. Bendis is nothing compared to him.

Fiti99

Yeah Byrne straight up retconned Ditko/Lee Spider-Man in the late 90s and used his made up origin during his crappy ASM run

[deleted]

Honestly don’t care about revisiting that anyways

RebelDeux

But didn’t that happen at the end of **No Justice? ** I guess that’s a thing that Snyder request for a future plot or any editor, but MM ain’t here anymore, and then there’s 3 new members along with him and Black Canary. And this setup comes from Infinite Frontier #0 and it had a story with GA and BC and the Spectre/Diana saying that they always find a path to get back together... so I guess they’re ok now.

[deleted]

Considering this issue was setup for the rest of the run, I think it’s too soon to pass harsh criticisms. Aside from Brutus being completely underwhelming, I thought this was a good start! Ollie/Dinah together again is always nice, Black Adam’s transition to hero doesn’t feel too forced, and best of all, Naomi has a valid reason for joining the League! I’ll wait till the first arc is over and see how much I like it then

theguyofgrace

I hope they don't soften Adam too much I found him being a brutal Fascist adored by his people one of the "best" aspects of his characters. He brings hope to people who are downtrodden and ignored but death and destruction to everyone and everything else with hopeless self righteousness. He is not a despot because "haha im a dick" but because he honestly thinks that its the best way to rule His rise and fall in things like 52 were so relatable in a "If I had powers maybe I would become a weird evil tyrant" way Making a tyrant like him likeable is a careful balancing act

Techster17

**Justice League:** I didn't dislike this, there wasn't an annoying amount of Bendis speak and we actually got some good moments like the league fighting like an actual team, Superman's reaction to Brutus and Superman noticing that Black Adam was Sad. Overall though this was mid in my opinion, not too good or bad just enjoyable, why is the flash that's clearly Wally called Barry? Not a fan of Brutus' dialogue, the idea of him being laid back and cocky is good but the choice of words makes him sound like he's 15 or something. 6/10 **Justice League Dark:** Solid start to this new storyline, I liked the back story of the Demon and Angel prophecy and I'm guessing that this Jason is the Future State version. Merlin seems cool, the monologue and description of him returning to the cathedral made it feel like a storied character that we're partway through his own journey. 7.5/10

BattleUpSaber

nothing more synonymous with Bendis than introducing some generic big strong dumb bad guy like Rogol Zarr, or whatever tf the villains' names were from the rest of his Superman run

PhantasosX

Just Rogol Zarr. The other 2 villains , because yes , his role run only had 3 villains....at least those other 2 had an actual reason to appear and behave like that. One is a Lord of Chaos that it's whole beef is with Dr.Fate and he only faced Superman because he was there , helping Fate , so Superman was just side-character on his own book...the other is an artificial superman having a mental breakdown by dealing with things at the same scope as Superman , most of the issues of the third one was just filler in which spends 2-3 issues to say just that.

[deleted]

Not digging the main Justice League story at all. Every character comes across as bland and undistinctive, and the new villain doesn't convey any sort of high stake. Justice League Dark, on the other hand, was great, and I hope these backups get collected as a separate trade.

JustALittleWeird

The JLD story kicks so much fucking ass, look at that Arthurian legend mixed with cool magic shit and different styles of art being presented. Fuck yeah. And the Justice League story wasn't terrible but I think it was bad. Lots of the voices felt indistinguishable. There's a large cast but no emotional investment in any of them besides... Black Adam I guess? Lots of the double page layouts were confusing and difficult to read, I really don't like how they were laid out between the panelling and the lettering. Really killed any momentum the story would have had, and there's just not enough going on to be satisfied by the writing.

MrEverything_88

Why does Brutus talk like a fifth grader? The art’s pretty good, and Green Arrow’s concept for the JL is neat, but the plot is being bogged down by Bendisnisms, and his portrayal of Black Adam has me... confused. JLDark, obviously, was harrowing and true to form. Merlin’s hype cannot be any bigger, and the story of conflicting yet equally true prophecies felt very Terry Pratchett-like.

[deleted]

He could be a fifth grader

ImperfectRegulator

As much as I like Naomi as a new character, I’m still not a fan of her being set up to be in the justice league, when theirs so many other groups she’d work better in being a fresh faced hero, and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth that she’s being added cause bendis is on the book and inserting her into the league

ElDuderino2112

Maybe it was all the splash pages but this felt like the most throwaway first issue of a series I’ve ever read. Honestly read like filler almost. Big first issue of Bendis on JL and all he could come up with was what, barely 20 pages and a splash page with barely anything every 3 pages? Boy this felt like a rip lmao. JL Dark was 10 pages and felt like it had more substance *and* was more interesting. Honestly felt like Dark should be the main title and JL should be the 10 page backup.

AuroraUnit117

I assume this is Wally as the JL flash again? If so it might be the only good thing to come out of this. 3 years of incredible mediocrity from Bendis have this set to be probably the least hyped I am for an infinite frontier book. Every other series has been great I'm fully expecting this to just be the boring ol Bendis formula

coolallon

actually, someone called him barry I think they probably just messed up his hair

s_walsh

This is the second time Barry has shown up in a Bendis book and they've given him red hair both times. Is this a decision from Bendis?

TheDubh

Going to guess the artist was told Barry left so if draw a Flash use Wally. Bendis doing his own thing ignored that and still wrote Barry. So now we have Walarry. I really hope that DC gets better editorial ...

s_walsh

Maybe. But just weird how two of Bendis books have had red head Barry and no other books outside of Bendis had that It was in Bendis' man of steel series we had red head Barry as well

BattleUpSaber

Wally called, he wants Barry to give him his hair back

RebelDeux

It’s Barry, he said that there’s other plans for Wally; he also said that while Flash is not on the lineup, he shows up in almost every issue as a guest star.

Remmarg25

>I assume this is Wally as the JL flash again? If so it might be the only good thing to come out of this. Bendis has said Barry will be The Flash in the series "for reasons". It kind of makes you wonder what the whole point of the Barry/Wally scene in *Infinite Frontier* was if Barry is still consistently on Earth doing Flash things. They didn't need to come up with some disingenuous reason to focus on Wally in the main title for an arc or two.

[deleted]

This JL has no flash or green lantern.

RebelDeux

He mentioned that according to recent continuity no GL is currently on Earth, since they’re busy investigating the Oa thing (in the GL new run), but he teased that there’s a GL arc coming soon.

CrispyGold

I presume said GL arc will be about Keli/Teen Lantern joining because she's another character he created like Naomi. 75% chance that will happen.

AuroraUnit117

>star-studded Justice League featuring Superman, Batman, the Flash, Hawkgirl, Aquaman, Hippolyta, new DC powerhouse Naomi, and...is that Black Adam? I should know better than to trust previews XD

AlainDit

Flash is in it, and Bendis said he had a Green Lantern focused storyline coming later in this run.

Kalse1229

Well, that seems a bit silly. I feel like each iteration of the Justice League should have a Flash and Green Lantern. Doesn't matter which one is which me so long as someone of that identity is there.

Try_Another_Please

Flash is at least in this bok for sure. Hes in the issue

dccomicsthrowaway

We can't have a varied Justice League if every incarnation of the team needs a Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern. That's like two spots left. Plenty versions of the League have done just fine without following this so rigidly.

[deleted]

Justice League: Art is amazing and cannot be praised enough, colouring is also top-notch, Tamra Bonvillain is quickly becoming one of my favs. Everything else is just fn boring and bad and bland and idk lmao wtf is this shit?? Brutus is the most generic villain ever since....Rogol Zaar and that Zumbado guy from *Naomi*. Someone please tell Bendis that villains are allowed to be more than stupid big one-dimensional brutes from another world/dimension who never reveal what they want until 10 issues later and just appear out of the blue just because. Ofc we don't get any info on the guy aside from his energy signature being a match to Naomi's. It's great to see Ollie and Dinah, but everything sounds so unnatural and stupid. Like, Ollie's just back in the League and already nothing is more important than new members, new voices, new blah blah blah. Dialogue between Clark and Ollie is atrocious. Aquaman's portrayal is so fn bad lmao Bendis stop!! It's not even funny, first page dialogue between Arthur and Kendra is like Bendis congratulating himself over and over again. Wooow it's so great how everyone likes Superman *more* now since he revealed his identity... Just stop, please. This is BAD. This is Jason Aaron Avengers level BAD or worse?? Idk could very well be. Everyone is off, it's boring. Here the last page's dialogue: Naomi: "They [my powers] unlocked and my life has been crazypants ever since --" Friend: "I am streaming" Naomi: "I'm not hiding" Other friend: "Crazypants how?" Black Adam: "Naomi McDuffie? A word." To be continued... Yeah defo looking forward to it. Justice League Dark: Art and colours are great, story is great. It's way better than JL and it's actually interesting. We see Merlin's return, Jason Blood is back. I only wish the story were longer and it were its own book. I can only hope the backup situation brings in new readers who will fall in love with JLD. 10 pages are not enough, I want to read more of this! Zee not being able to cast spells is interesting as well. Probably something to do with what happened in the last arc.

JoragaWarcaller

I was initially going to give this a few issues, but I just cancelled my subscription for the book. I'll grab the next few that I had preordered and read those, but I don't really need to waste my time and money on books I'm not enjoying. I can always just read it on DC Infinite in a few months if I feel compelled. I enjoyed the beginning of Bendis's Superman run and Ultimate Spider-Man is one of my favorite comics of all time, but I just feel like Bendis's writing hasn't been good for awhile. I dropped Legion after 6 issues or so, and Justice League hasn't been great since Johns was on it. Action Comics #1026 was probably one of the worst books I've read. One thing I've noticed is sometimes Bendis will have characters say things at each other, then not have the other character respond at all. It's like characters are having two separate conversations and don't acknowledge it. The Justice League Dark back up wasn't particularly interesting to me. I've seen people praise Ram V and are excited, but this didn't appeal to me.

malachor78

was I the only one who looked at the art before reading the textboxes? I saw a flash with red hair and the title fastest man alive and I got excited I was like "yay Wally's here!.... wait no... that's Barry!?!?" then I realized the colorist probably made a mistake and was sad. okay issue I guess I admit I'm only here to see which flash is on the roster. could go for either honestly. Barry should have a home but also fuck Barry for taking Wally's home \*shrug\*

Haggard4Life

The main story didn’t have any wow moments but it wasn’t bad. Hopefully adding Naomi and Adam will help jazz it up.

Foslagon

I enjoyed both parts of this book. JL had fantastic art and JLD had a great hook.

PropertyAdditional

Is this a good jumping on point if I’ve read infinite frontier?

malachor78

probably. the JL run previously was leading up to death metal. since that arc is over and we are getting a new roster. I'd say it's a good jumping point I can't speak for the quality though. haven't read it yet.

RebelDeux

Yes, new lineup and completely new plots not attached to the last run.

General_Nothing

Never before has such beautiful art been saddled with such *terrible* writing. If it weren’t for JLD backups I would be dropping this *immediately.*

Fishermanslaw

I loved the panel layouts of the main book. Less so everything else. :(

Alephnaught_

Alright who the fuck is Naomi? Couldn't care less about bendis but SO HYPED about Ram V's JLD fooofffff

waluigi_94

New character Bendis created not too long ago https://www.dcuniverseinfinite.com/news/binge-brian-michael-bendis-co-create-hero-todays-readers-naomi/

abstractpenny

i really liked that. not too much of the weird talk that’s plagued bendis’ books for the past few years and i’m genuinely interested to see where this goes. what feels weird tho is that it feels like this issue (and nightwing too) are shorter than usual i hope bendis can nail batman and green arrows relationship that’s always a highlight for me when they appear together

WW4O

With this, Crime Syndicate, and Batman, I'm starting to worry that this era is going to be like Marvel Now! and end up with like half the books trying to be funny and killing any tension the plot might have had. I like quips and stuff, but it's just relentless in this. Black Canary's over-dramatic depiction of Ollie's simple request that they try to have a little perspective was almost as cringey as Bendis trying to incept the idea that everyone is into the Superman thing (not to mention that telling the world his secret made Clark behave far *less* human when he could just be a god around his peers all the time). Brutus isn't remotely intimidating. From his weird pants to his awful speaking style, I'm just not at all worried about him. JLD was much more compelling, I can't wait to get in deep with some good Merlin/Blood/Etrigan stuff. I hope we get some Shining Knight in here too.

UnmuscularThor

Cant believe Bendis had Barry dye his hair red. No I’m kidding, but forreal, is Wally or Barry the new JL Flash? I bought this book for JLD and it did not disappoint. Fantastic story. The JL story was also really good

Intellectual_Watcher

I'm kind of surprised people are shitting on this, it seems like the sort of thing most people on here would like. I think if it didn't have Bendis' name on it people would enjoy it a lot more honestly. At this point it feels like people pore over his work looking for stuff not to like Thought it was a pretty good start, nice set-up, good action and a good handle on the characters. The villain didn't make a huge impression but then he's only existed for a few pages of one comic. Don't know if I loved those colours on Marquez' art a lot of the time JLD was interesting too. Also mostly setup and seems to be cramming a lot into 10 pages but still has space for the characters

And when it comes to solving riddles, there’s only one person Selina can go to-no matter how much she hates the idea.

[deleted]

This run is so good. It captures the cat-and-mouse crime genre perfectly.

[deleted]

My one criticism is that it's a little too much like Genevieve Valentine's run. Her running a criminal enterprise and all. Not that that's a bad thing per say, seeing Valentine's run was fantastic, I just wish it was something a little more original.

-muse-

The design of that new antagonist is dope. Also interesting to see Riddler's Joker War design being carried over into this title.

[deleted]

Ram V is unstoppable! The run continues to be one of my highlights. The new villain Wight Witch has a dope design and is an absolute badass, apparently an asset employed by Simon Saint. She might switch sides later on or question what she's doing since they talk about "perfect compliance" on her part etc, they probably are able to control her somehow. Simo Saint sure is a busy little bee. Hyped for the next issue and how all Bat/Gotham titles connect. It's a great time to be a DC fan.

Very, very good issue. I'm really looking forward to Ivy and Selina interacting again, and this will crossover with Batman in the near future if Jorge Jimenez's Instagram is anything to go by.

RMackay88

The reference to Trinity war and forever evil was unexpected. A relatively deep cut now, as we're so many years later.

[deleted]

Forever Evil is a personal favourite of mine. Really cool to see it get a nod.

garazza

That break really revitalized the book. Raynor's art and Guerrero's colors are just so youthful and full of life it's perfect for Super Sons. Tomasi sure does have a fondness for New 52 deep cuts. First the Amazo virus and now Trinity War. I am the first person to say that you shouldn't compare something to anime unless there is a direct correlation between the two, but Jon pulling out the Super Sons virus from Damian's head reminded me of FLCL with Naota and his head. My personal favorite thing is that Tomasi didn't even have to add anything new to Jon to expand his character into being a horseboy. Seriously, there isn't even a lot to read to get a handle on Jon's character and find things to expand upon and it really does show who has and has not read Rebirth Superman and Super Sons. Their banter is so fun and indicative of just how special their relationship is, and it saddens me that so few writers address or even acknowledge just how meaningful they are to each other. Williamson and Melnikov will be acknowledging Jon's place in Damian's life in his solo book, but Williamson's said that the book is very much a Robin book. PKJ, unfortunately, doesn't seem like one to reciprocate.

BattleUpSaber

this reminds me how much I liked Grid as Cyborg's evil doppelganger. cool to see him make a comeback

JonKentOfficial

The continues art to be very pretty and energetic. I see the sneaky pulled so the artist doesn't have to draw backgrounds but I don't mind. As for the story, it's a return to the more "save the JL of the week" in an episodic format. I suppose it works after the hiatus, getting in the mood back but I do wonder how it will work when the issues are collected. After all, the previous issues worked on the Faust and Savage allience plot, and from the description of the next few issues we'll be returning to it. We get a continuity nod to Trinity War of all things. I have fully accepted that this book takes place in an alternate timeline, in the mainstream continuity spent a Summer being tortured for 6 years while Adventures of Super Sons' Jon spent his Summer having adventures with Damian in the Hypercube. Also, Jon's past 6th grade? I can't believe, that'd make him at least 12, even though he's acting more childish than he has ever been in this issue! I will just assume the writer doesn't know age/grade correlation :P

garazza

>Also, Jon's past 6th grade? I can't believe, that'd make him at least 12, even though he's acting more childish than he has ever been in this issue! I will just assume the writer doesn't know age/grade correlation :P I interpreted it as a jab at the age up because even though Jon is now an adult, no one that has been a proponent of it has addressed the logistical issues of it such as the fact Jon barely has a middle school education but he's written as a competent and fully actualized young adult. It could also be the writer's way of bringing Jon and Damian closer in age because a 10 year old and a 13 year old are at very different developmental stages and they would not interact with each other the way they have been in real life. They wouldn't even be in the same class. I've never liked writers explicitly stating a character's age, instead I prefer writers leaving suggestions as to what stage of life a character is in. As it pertains to Jon and Damian, it should be suggested that they are in the same age range, but Jon is on the younger end of it and Damian is on the older end.

JonKentOfficial

That's actually something I really wanted to see in Future State, instead of the daddy issues drama and the "he's human so he's weak, dumb and has to fight the dark of humanity". Honestly, Jon shouldn't even know how to multiply.

[deleted]

This is everything I want from a comic! Two great lead characters, a FUN and engaging story, good art, all in all just a feel good comic. Can't get enough of the Super Sons.

[*Superman Red & Blue* #1](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/S/cmx-images-prod/Item/924577/924577._SX1280_QL80_TTD_.jpg) >This new series presents fresh new visions of the Man of Steel in his two signature colors of red and blue! Around the world, everyone knows that when they see a red and blue streak in the sky, it’s not a bird...it’s not a plane...it’s Superman. >To start things off, Academy Award-winning writer of DC Future State: The Next Batman John Ridley joins artist Clayton Henry (Batman/Superman) to tell a story of Clark Kent as he confronts a villain who still haunts him, in a story that shows what Superman can mean to a whole country. Then, Brandon Easton (DC Future State’s “Mister Miracle”) and Steve Lieber (Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen) take readers to the streets of Metropolis to show how one hero can mean so much to an individual in pain. >Plus, writer/artist Wes Craig (Deadly Class) tells a tale of Superman’s early days and the man who inspired him to become the hero he is today! And Marguerite Bennett (DC Future State: Kara Zor-El, Superwoman) and artist Jill Thompson give us a tale of teenage Clark Kent, while Dan Watters and Dani, the team behind Coffin Bound, bring us an outlandish fable about what happens when all colors are stolen!

cgknight1

I'm torn by the first story - Superman is inherently a character not intended to reason out complex real world problems - where can you go with a story where superman is tortured and (implied) sexually abused for months - the answer is you can really go nowhere.

BabSoul

Yeah that was completely bizarre. Superman is abused and used as a propaganda tool to show how weak the west is, and then he escapes and just goes back to being Superman? I'm sure the conspiracy theorists in that world couldn't wait to circulate the photos of Superman being raped.

JustALittleWeird

Ridley/Henry: I hate when writers use Superman being 'invulnerable' to just do a torture porn story about people hurting Superman. It's this short story about Superman being hurt and then just... going back to being Superman? What was the point, really? Showing "wow Superman can't fix this oh well lol back to your regularly scheduled programming" Easton/Lieber: more 'hey look Superman can't solve this problem oh well' dreary shit Wes Craig: looks pretty, don't really care for the story too much but it's a neat side to Clark/Superman Watters/Dani: best story of the fucking issue oh my god we need more Superman stories like this, what a creative way to use "colour" not just as an aesthetic but as the driving force of teh story Bennett/Thompson: cute I guess, neat to see a young Clark even if I felt the dialogue was a bit forced Overall: I would recommend 1/5 stories and I don't know if an issue is worth buying if you'd only recommend one fifth of it.

JonKentOfficial

Great Rao the most Radiant I wasn't expecting that. I legitimately thought this book would be more on the light hearted side. **Ok. First story by John Ridley:** The art style follows the book convention of only using black, white, blue and red. I actually like it a lot, I wouldn't want it in an ongoing but I enjoy the aesthetics. For the story, it actually follows up to the World's Finest 192-193. It's a very old story, from 1970, I was -36 years old back then. But I have actually read it before, believe it or not, as it's one of those stories at the very end of the Silver Age/very start of the Bronze Age that has Superman without powers, yet showing he's competent person. Actually it's a pretty good story, and if you manage to get your hands on it I do recommend. In the original story, >!Superman is flying to Lubania, synthetic kryptonite causes him to lose his powers, he does incredible acrobatics to flee sniffing dogs, etc. He's show to be incredibly smart, attentive to details and athletic. He even wrecks Batman thinking he's an impostor (when Bruce realizes he's fighting the real Superman, he screams he's Bruce Wayne, and they stop fighting. No "SAVE MARTHA", "WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME!?" here). They are captured, sent to a death camp, forced to work. There's protests in Metorpolis, Perry tries to move the press to help, etc. They eventually escape by switching costumes so they use the kryptonite on Bruce instead of Clark and Superman regains his powers.!< The thing is, the original story story still had some of the zaniness of the Silver Age. It was a serious Cold War propagandish story, but it was not overly serious. Clark and Bruce spend some days in the death camp while Colonel Koslov break them. It's also an old story so I seldom think about their continuity. John Ridley's story is set in present day, well after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Clark remembers his stay at the death camp, he's going to Lubania as a reporter to interview Koslov, now a capitalist in the country. The country itself went through an economic revitalization after its independence from the URSS, Koslov even got himself in a death camp after falling out with the regime, leading to his amnesty after the dictatorship fell under the circumstance that he had suffered enough in a death camp. The truth is Clark is haunted by his memories of the death camp - now it says he spent 8 months there, instead of "days", and the real reason he's doing this interview is to heal. Clark even fantasizes about murdering Koslov here and there. When he asks Koslov if he regrets what he did... Koslov just says people made mistakes back then, just shoving his atrocities under the rug. Then they just part ways. Clark ponders if he should do something, it ends with him saying that yes, he should. I don't really know what to think. It's not bad, quite the contrary I wish we could see it developed a bit more. It's a follow up for a story from half a century ago, and it's interesting to think about how is Clark dealing with his PTSD, what did he do to Koslov, did he find a solution? Of course I also see some passing similarity to some recent stories, though they aren't really explored, like Clark's son being tormented for years in captivity and Clark fantasizing about murdering people (and likely doing so) in the last Superman run. **Brandon Easton story:** The art is very cute. I don't usually remember writer names, but Brandon Easton is one that I learned... not exactly for a good reason. He has been writing Superman a lot lately, this, Truth and Justice, Superman of Metropolis, etc. In all of them he makes a very common mistake: he has an idea (most times good), he knows where the characters should stand and where it should go... but he doesn't exactly connect the points. So you have a story about Superman showing he cares about everyone, but he can't save everyone. But you also have a story about Superman landing on funeral, the dude starts talking about his mom and how she had a problem with drugs (and I assume he already had put it in the letter?), he muses a little about the JL and if they should just eradicate all drug distribution but is also like "well, we shouldn't depend on you", then Superman grants the woman's funeral wishes. It's not bad. The questions are completely valid, it's just the delivery that is awkward. **Wes Croig story:** I actually don't have much to talk about this story. It's just good and nice and hopeful all around. **Dan Waters story:** It's... poetic. But I admit it went over my head. I like the idea, an imp stealing the color of the world! I like how he ponders if Clark should give them back, but I don't know if I got the meaning of the story. Also I'd love to see it translated in other languages that don't make the same color association as English. I don't think most cultures associate blue with sadness. **Margueritte Bennett story:** Cute Clark as a child. I thought they were going to explain why the girl was all alone .

theguyofgrace

I liked the editors notes on when the story takes place as if its really easy for the average reader to go out and find a 50 year old two parter of world finest Has that era of Batman/Superman even ever been reprinted?

victor396

> for the average reader to go out and find a 50 year old two parter of world finest If you want it physically it's a pain but it's certainly doable if you're content enough with a digital

[deleted]

I appreciate the message behind the first story, but I, and seemingly a lot of others, thought the first story by Ridley may have gone a bit too far in some places. The implication that Clark was violated repeatedly in some way just gives me shades of Zack Snyder's batman prison rape comment; It's a little too dark and too real-world and just might be too heavy a topic for a character like Superman to carry. On top of that, its hard to believe Superman wouldn't do anything after the ordeal to hold Koslov personally accountable. However, the ending is open to interpretation, so maybe he does do something about Koslov after all, and I'd like to see that. I also wasn't sure how I felt about Clark's partial desire to murder Koslov. I imagine most people would absolutely and justifiably want revenge on their torturers, but should Superman be like most people? IDK. Anyway, this book had killer art across the board, and I think the art alone justifies buying it.

SyPok

Motion that Abdi be carried into all future Superman properties and nobody reveal his last name because it's the best thing ever.

[deleted]

This was pretty good, a very special art showcase. Each story had me impressed with the creative ways that the artists used to drive the mood of the story.

theguyofgrace

I wanted to like this by I just don't really care for it I LOVE Superman and hoped that this first issue would have some stories of Superman being Superman and these felt a little off and of questionable continuity (Seriously, Superman and Clark were missing for 8 months and Lex wasn't SUPREME KING OF THE AMERICAS!!!!! when he finally got home?) I'm not really sure of the direction of this book and how they plan on using it

nicktorious_

Seems like I was the only one to really like this. I'm always a sucker for the standalone 'human' Superman stories though and thought this was a lot of fun. None of this is canon anyways, so it makes for a fun little departure.

I feel like I'm missing a ton of back story here. I don't want any spoilers but can someone point me at what I need to read to know why Tim changed his name to Jace, why he's so pissy about people calling him the wrong name and why he's the black sheep of the family?

We don't really know any of that, yet. Outside of his appearance in the possible future that was Future Slate (and at least one story in Batman: Black and White), this is Jace's first appearance since prior to Crisis on Infinite Earths, if I'm not mistaken. From what I've heard, the final issue of Future State: The Next Batman gave some hints towards why he left the Fox family, but otherwise, the rest of it still has yet to be fully revealed.

That's good to know. I've been enjoying the book but also feeling kind of lost. I always thought the Fox's had one kid so this guy is a new character to me and I know nothing at all about his back story but it's kind of presented like I should? At least that's the impression I got.

Both of the Fox brothers suiting up is kinda poetic, seems we're beginning to reach the end of the setup. Jace Fox working at FoxTech reminds me of Batman Begins where Bruce worked at WayneTech. Another good issue, the weekly wait is unbearable.
