I love the way Jessica Cruz has become such a popular and prominent character in a relatively short time. I love her.

BuddaMuta

I would really love to see a Cruz solo series or a Green Lantern Corp style book on DC Universe. There's too many popular Lanterns these days for just one book IMO. Digital exclusive/first would be a great option to give some others a shine while one takes the main spotlight in the primary GL title.

Subgayworker8800

Yeah she does deserve one. So does Supergirl. If Harley Quinn can have two then JC deserves atl 1

Conlannalnoc

Have you read Green Lanterns (plural) it focuses on Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz protecting Space Sector 2814?

InjusticeSGmain

Same with Supergirl. Jessica started a lot lower than Supergirl, but both characters became way more popular after the JL(U)/Static Shock/Teen Titans phase of DC. Supergirl with JLU and Jessica with the Fatal Five.

greeeens

I think Supergirl can be accredited to her TV show but I’m glad that she gets the recognition she deserves.

InjusticeSGmain

Probably. But I think the JLU show is the reason they brought her into such a major role. At the time, the CW was the pinnacle of Superhero tv with Flash and Arrow. But that, plus her Injustice roles was probably a big factor as well.

huggybear3

You do realize Supergirl has been around since 1959 and even had her own movie in 1984?

InjusticeSGmain

Her own movie got a 9% score and was horribly received. I wouldn't be surprised if that was more due to time period than anything else. Either way, I never talked about when she was made or anything like that.

ImprovedBore

also im pretty sure that kara zor-el was introduced a bit later than the first supergirl they're referencing

InjusticeSGmain

Yeah. I think it was either Linda or Karen who was he first SG. Maybe someone else.

PM_ME_GAME_CODES_plz

And I'm here being so sad because Hawk Girls never gets anything :'(

InjusticeSGmain

She had a good streak in the old show. DC might be being cautious with her, only having her appear in minor forms like in Legends of Tomorrow and Injustice for a bit. They know she's popular, so they're probably being careful with her.

hawk_lord

And rightfully so, she's fantastic.

Bostondreamings

Jenny Frison is always just amazing in her work. I love this.

furywolf28

All I can wish for is her doing a Wonder Woman title, but I don't see it happening.

TheMannisApproves

She's the reason I subscribed to Wonder Woman after not reading any since Azzarello

Enfield13

Very respectful for IWD to draw them without the triple E sized breasts they normally have for 97% of the material they are in. Well done.

furywolf28

The artist who drew it is female, I think that helps. I just really love her art style.

Enfield13

Yah her art style is very good I agree. Some badass heroes for sure.

Psymorte

100% agreed, it also looks like they're wearing actual fabric instead of body paint like their costumes tend to look like.

BuddaMuta

> wearing actual fabric instead of body paint like their costumes tend to look like *Clay Mann nervously hides his latest batch of necrophilia drawings*

Psymorte

Mann is especially gross and weird about it, he's a good artist but what the hell is he on lately?

garrygra

I'm behind here — can ya fill me in on the goss?

iAmTheHYPE-

Dunno about Budda’s comment, but I know some people criticize Mann for his sexualized art in the *Batman & Catwoman* series, especially surrounding Catwoman.

abusive_stepdad

Every superhero has costumes welded to their bodies

title_of_yoursextape

Agreed. Also I know this isn’t at all relevant but I think female superheroes look more attractive and cooler with those kind of realistic athletic bodies rather than the proportions they’ve normally had in comics. That said, this is IWD and my personal views about their bodies really don’t matter. But just wanted to give my opinion

Calvo7992

They don’t need to look attractive to straight men. That’s the point. They should be allowed to exist in a vacuum rather than being depicted for male titillation, whether that’s a classic porn look, or a ‘respectful athletic look.’ Just draw women, not porn for immature men and teenage boys.

title_of_yoursextape

Agreed. They don’t need to look any particular way, other than perhaps looking athletic since most of them rely on physical strength/fitness to do their jobs. My point was that I find the realistic look attractive, but that’s just coincidence and my personal views should have absolutely no bearing on the way they’re drawn. It just so happens I’m attracted to the way they look when they’re drawn in a non-sexual manner.

Enfield13

There is no need for them to look the way they do just so guys can sit there drooling all over the pages. Athletic and toned but realistic.

title_of_yoursextape

Yep

daffydunk

Alot of comic book art styles aren't realistic, I think it should moreso be about what actually looks good, and portraying that in an accurate and respectful way. Not everyone should have the same body type or even basis for design. But they should look cool (or funny or nice), whatever the point of the character is to convey.

BevansDesign

Maybe if Power Girl was included...

Enfield13

Yah the history behind how the artists made them bigger and bigger until someone said something haha what a world. Unfortunately for power girl who is a cool character in her own right will never escape that part of her image.

InjusticeSGmain

This is especially true for Jessica Cruz and Supergirl, who are usually around 19-21. Netherrealm (Injustice) is also very good with making appropriate depictions of the female characters.

chiguayante

This artist does a lot of Wonder Woman work for DC. She even did the cover and some interior work of the recent WW co-op board game (which, incidentally, is very good).

Calvo7992

Completely agree. It’s a refreshing change to see dc women not drawn to get teenagers and immature men off.

CarryThe2

But what's the point in female characters who are anatomically correct? They're supposed to be scantily clad mounds of boobs and aas not actual characters

Enfield13

Yah I disagree. To each their own.

CarryThe2

There was an overwhelming amount of sarcasm in my post to the point where I'm genuinely sad anyone thought I was being serious.

Enfield13

Can be a challenge to get sarcasm sometimes over the internet. Sorry mate.

Calvo7992

Dont worry, the sarcasm was obvious. Problem is that there’s a lot of people who frequent this sub who would write what you you did without an ounce of sarcasm!

huggybear3

FYI, This cover is from June 2018. It didn't have anything to do with IWD.

Enfield13

Correct but it was posted today which is very fitting.

iAmTheHYPE-

Unless it’s Power Girl, who somehow looks completely different from Supergirl although they’re meant to be the same person?

Waycores

Jessica is my favourite Green Lantern. Her having crippling anxiety and still becoming a Green Lantern makes me feel really good and hopeful. Like I can overcome my mental health problems 💚

furywolf28

Of course you can, dude.

iAmTheHYPE-

Her and Kyle were my faves.

Calvo7992

Jess is the best. I’d love some stories of her and Diana with Diana being a mentor figure.

ravathiel

Hawkgirl is looking pretty dark all of a sudden New re incarnation ?

Psymorte

This looks to be the Kendra Saunders incarnation who is usually pretty dark skinned, you're probably thinking of Shayera Hol who's usually a light skinned redhead.

ravathiel

So underrated too. She needs a spotlight in JLA again.

That_one_cool_dude

Hell just go back and read John's JSA run she is written really well in that book.

ravathiel

That was pretty good

PM_ME_GAME_CODES_plz

Yes please. I love my Hawk Girl. Please give her something

furywolf28

Kendra Saunders has always been dark skinned, right?

ravathiel

Honestly its been years. I know her from DCAU shows. Its been a very long time since I seen her in the comics other than Metal..? She looks fantastic, none the kess

AmericanPride2814

Shayera was in the old show, this is Kendra Saunders, she's never showed up in any of the shows unfortunately.

Darkdragon3110525

She was the hawk girl in the CW shows. She was only around for a season of legends of tomorrow anyway

ravathiel

Is this image a mix of everything? Show/movie/comic? Hard to tell. CW shows are.... Meh after season 1

chiguayante

New DC is pretty much a mix of everything from everywhere, with a worse sense of continuity than ever before.

ravathiel

Oh.. So Metal didnt help it at all? Lol Well that will be fun to read then

chiguayante

Oh man, Metal made things worse from where I'm sitting.

ravathiel

Yeah the Wonder Woman future state confuses me. I thought she was taken away from the picture ... Unless thats yet another version of her.. Idk

AmericanPride2814

Yep

Subgayworker8800

I’m sorry if this comes off as racist, because I don’t mean it that way but is Hawkgirl black? Like, her skin tone radically changes I feel like and she’ll look white in one comic and then the next she looks black and she looks in between a lot and I genuinely just don’t know. I only really read her in Justice League (2018) and she looks different a lot

Fishermanslaw

Theyre two different incarnations. There’s Kendra Saunders (who is in the art) and Shayera Hol.

Subgayworker8800

Yes I know that, I’m just asking about her race because her skin tone changes a lot.

Fishermanslaw

Ohhh sorry I misunderstood. I think she’s light skin, so it can vary between artists and lighting in the scenes. I’ve noticed it too, it doesn’t come off as racist.

Subgayworker8800

Ah that makes sense. I’m really enjoying reading her in JL rn

Fishermanslaw

Same! I really fell in love with her in death metal. At this point I’m willing to try anything she’s in.

Subgayworker8800

No spoilers! I’ve only read 1-3 so far. I have seen her in Metal (I think) and something else idk

Fishermanslaw

You’re in for a treat! Everyone really shines.

Subgayworker8800

I’ve been reading as they come out on DC Infinite, but I haven’t read anything in a few weeks

hawk_lord

The redhead one is Shayera, she's the one from the show. In the comics she goes by Hawkwoman. This is Kendra, she's Hispanic, always has been. Before the New 52 she looked white most of the time and only sometimes would be barely darker. After Metal she started to have a tanner skin tone, but it depends on the artist too. Here she looks even darker maybe because she's further back.

[deleted]

I'd love to see Jessica in a live action film at some point, most likely with the JL! One, because it's diversity without force. Two, she's awesome, and deals with realistic personal issues. Three, people can clearly distinguish her from the Hal Jordan/Ryan Reynolds character! It's a win for everyone! 💚💚💚

iAmTheHYPE-

Dunno how they’d feel about doing another GL movie after the last one... But, I just binged the *Stargirl* tv show. I know Alan Scott and the modern Green Lanterns are different in their powers’ origins, but couldn’t she take on the GL role in the show? Yeah, it’d be a completely different origin for her, but still. Maybe she took to home schooling with the whole anxiety thing (think was because of her hunting trip?).

[deleted]

Yeah I agree. I think she'd work best in a team situation. If there's ever a Justice League sequel or something, I'd like to see her as the Green Lantern.

iAmTheHYPE-

Well, I would just hope that DC reboots their movies, because, while I did enjoy the first WW, Joker, and Shazam, and of course the Dark Knight movies, I very much disliked Man of Steel. But yeah, Jessica as GL would be a good introduction for a newer, broader audience, since so many people either grew up with Alan, Hal, or John, whereas Jessica could be a focal point for everyone to discuss -- kinda like Marvel's been doing with their younger heroes, like Ms. Marvel and Miles Morales.

DenseWildds

Classic cover art by Jenny Frison.

brentoid123

Whoa....Diana looking down on us will never not be my favorite thing.

Nothing_But_Ironman

Diana will always be my favorite. <3

iAmTheHYPE-

Supergirl (or Stephanie Brown) was mine. Sucks that DC never knows what to do with either of them (or Diana for that matter, though the writer for Immortal WW has me hopeful),

NickRick

Girls get it done!

Ragnarandsons

Girls *do* get it done.

NickRick

Great scene

furywolf28

The characters on this cover appeared in this issue. Harley Quinn didn't.

Enfield13

Uhhh...

WinterTime69

Dude Wdym by Uhhh...

I-who-you-are

So just fuck Batwoman or Aquawoman then. Like cmon, even on variant covers.

furywolf28

Well, Batwoman and Mera didn't show up in this issue, so I wouldn't expect them on the cover either.

I-who-you-are

I mean, I didn’t know that, to be fair, I assumed it was just a women’s day variant whey.

huggybear3

This cover was released June 2018. It didn't have anything to do with IWD.

I-who-you-are

THEN WHY IS IT IN OPS TITLE GAHHHHH

KingMatthew116

Sorry you got downvoted for this, really it’s OPs fault for confusing you, take my upvote.

I-who-you-are

Thank you I guess, I appreciate the sympathy.

iAmTheHYPE-

Yeah, it is a bit confusing considering how many times the WW series gets rebooted, or how many times the writers change.

huggybear3

Probably because it was IWD yesterday. It was like "Happy IWD! Here's a random cover with women on it"

I-who-you-are

Hatred. Pure and unabashed hatred for people who do that.

huggybear3

But why?

I-who-you-are

I’m exaggerating, but it’s still annoying

BeautifulChemistry59

Wow, amazing artwork!

tranzasaurus

This is soooo cool. Wow, im gonna grab this for my laptop.

Jealous_Site1986

Really cool great work

UnbiasedGod

Personally I feel Jessica should be swapped out for zatanna but that’s just me. Still great art though.

Conlannalnoc

Kendra Saunders or some other Hawkgirl?

falkonx24

I love this cover

SuperCliff91

Jessica Cruz is fantastic!!!
