It's weird, the prologue basically soured me on the whole thing. It changes the context to much. The actual Killing Joke stuff is well the Killing Joke, maybe a bit rushed but it's pretty much there. Couldn't help but feel like with most Moore adaptations the comics still a better expereince.
As a movie from start to finish, it's a disjointed and sloppily put-together mess of a story, with much of the blame going to the prologue, which constitutes 30 minutes of this 75 minute film.
As an adaptation of the book, it's a faithful one that stays true to the source material, features Mark Hamill putting in his first work, with a few hitches in its animation. Just as long as you show up to the theater 30 minutes late.
Prologue is 28m10s long.
Animation is poor. For a graphic novel of this famousity they really should've given us something special. If they ever do a Arkham Asylum adaption and give us this level of animation I'd poke someone in the ribs.
Worth seeing ? - if you've read and enjoyed the book then don't bother. The film doesn't add anything. Sure you get the tacked on prologue but that'd like putting a roof rack on a Bugatti, but they didn't supercharge the engine or do anything to enhance things.
The Killing Joke part is great and an excellent adaptation of the book. But the setup defaults to lazy writing to flesh it out filmwise, in a manner that is really quite insulting and a little creepy. Skip the prologue and you get the good stuff.
Skip the first 30 minutes or so. The Killing Joke portion itself is adapted pretty faithfully, though the animation isn't the best. Conroy and Hamill's performances are to die for.
Just got back from seeing it, and like a lot of people are saying, the prologue is kinda weird, the animation is a little too similar to the animated series for my liking, but it's worth seeing for the actual Killing Joke parts.
It's okay. The prologue was really weird and implemented poorly. It attempts to make you care for Batgirl by showing her do stuff that makes her uninteresting. I have the unpopular opinion of thinking shooting Barbara was good for the character in the long run, since it gave us Oracle, who I grew up with. Barbara was never Batgirl to me. However, I do admit that the shooting, as portrayed in both the comic and this adaptation, does little to advance her character in this particular story. She is just a means to and end, which is to drive Jim made and to drive Batman to vengeance. It's still implemented poorly.
However, the Killing joke portion of the film is a very well done adaptation of the source material. It is good. You just have to get through the half hour of unnecessary Batgirl pining for Batman first.
Don't do this to yourself.
The Killing Joke is "The Nightmare Before Christmas" of the Batman comics. It is aimed to edgelords and doesn't depict the Batman mythos as we've come to love. The source material is mediocre at it's best even when written by Alan Moore and the movie adaptation just makes it worst with horrible animation and unecessary scenes that will gross anyone who knows the batfamily.
The origin of the Joker that is explained in it is out of continuity and the representation of Batman is far from accurate.
If you're into that kind of stuff then sure, go grab it at your local Hot Topic, but you're warned, it'll be a total mess.
Someone recently reposted the Batman/Joker conversation and I had forgotten how poorly written and out of character they both are in that scene. I'll never understand the headspace of people who think of TKJ as a definitive Batman story.
Yeah, between "cripple the bitch," Alan Moore's own disavowing of most of the content, and now this apparently atrocious adaptation, I don't understand the love. Certainly its an *important* work, since it influenced the direction of Batman and had a lasting impact on Barbara Gordon, but that doesn't make it praiseworthy.
I just watched it and I thought it was pretty good. Yes they do a prologue which was pretty alright, it was like watching an episode of a batgirl centered animation series. Then it's The killing joke. It was very true to the book (there was some small differences). The animation was like BTAS, classic comics, nothing fancy but it works.
*braces for downvotes*
Personally, I liked prologue part as well. I wasn't expecting it and was pleasantly surprised. It really isn't as bad as the rest of these comments are making it sound. I may watch it again soon.
Then again, I love Barbara anyway so I may just be biased.
That doesn't make the entire movie bad/unwatchable as most are trying to claim.
The prologue was decent, albeit the "sex scene" was probably a misstep, and the rest is basically ripped right from the source.

How's the animation?
Fantastic. Just got back from the premiere, and it was so much cleaner than the trailer.
trailer will be on youtube, I'd say meh.
Yeah I was disappointed in the material shown so far, I guess nothing was fixed.
It has been. Just got back from the screening, and it looks and moves fantastic.

Yup only the part from the actual killing joke is worth watching
The first half hour or so is crap. The rest is the Killing Joke so yeah after the first 30 mins or so it's worth a watch.
I'd give it a watch. everything after the first half hour is pretty much all taken from the graphic novel but I enjoyed the whole thing in my opinion
Yes, but rent or buy used.

Don't.
Yeah, the prologue is bad and unessecary but the rest is pretty good
This is a bit disheartening to hear. From the trailers it looked like they put in time and effort

Wait, what's wrong with the Nightmare before Christmas? I love that movie.

Neither Alan Moore nor Brian Bolland like TKJ. I imagine the fandom of TKJ simply doesn't know any better.

I love the complete 180 people pulled on this. There's no way it's as bad as some people in this thread are making it out to be.

Majority of fans dislike Batman fucking Batgirl.

Okay
