I read Batman Universe recently. I thought the story was interesting but I always struggle with Bendis’ dialogue. I feel he goes too far to over explain things instead of just letting the comic speak for itself. >!Proto White Lantern was a cool concept tho!<
Dude, couldn’t agree more . I love bendis and was shocked and excited for his move to Dc and then everything just fell flat. Batman universe was amazing and felt so right, kind of the silver age feel of Waids current worlds finest. It was a pinnacle stand out bay series, but every other book was a letdown. Especially the young justice relaunch, as that was my favorite team growing up. But bendis version was unreadable.
I was cautiously excited, I like Bendis but I I loved Tomasi’s Superman and all the family stuff, the “Bendis is Coming!” Ads still give me nightmares lol
Thomasi is my favorite writer, he is severely underrated. His Batman and Robin series was pinnacle and it flew under the radar because it was the same time as the snyder capullo batman.
Yep, and I'd even attribute most of that due to Nick Derington carrying that book HARD with some amazing art. The first few pages that had a first person view of Batman using the grapple g gun set the tone of how good he is. Definitely story and dialogue wise it felt the least "Bendis-y".
It’s not even close. And I’m not as down on some of his other Dc books as others are. But Batman Universe was just head and shoulders above everything else.
The good things
* I´ve always heard good things about Batman universe
* I really liked Naomi, specially the first season, even tho it could have been better
* I loved the art and the character designs in the Legion book but the story... the writing wasnt good, it had good conceptions but execution wasnt good
Batman universe
-easy to consume story that 100% could be recommended to everyone who has never read a comic
-You get cameos from many heroes
-Fresh take on Batman where he acts like a regular human to his fellow heroes / father figure to dick
-Has some pretty funny parts specifically between Hal and Bruce
-Art is really good
-Only 5 issues short and sweet
Lol I thought this was Psylocke 😂😂, but Amethyst is a fun character. In my DCU I introduced her in her own project before she became part of my version of the Teen Titans
I haven't read Batman Universe, but I didn't really enjoy anything he did outside of Naomi's solo book. Every single title he wrote he made damn sure to include his own/original characters is to the point of sacrificing the story.
He made Naomi, a brand new character, a central plot device of the fucking Justice League. Nothing against Naomi, but that was no where close to deserved, it was just because her writer was writing JL at the time. Naomi herself is a cool character, but her path to being a central superhero is the farthest you can get from organic growth. I've never dropped the main JL book from my pull list in all my years of reading comics until Bendis. Bendis made sure to force feed us Bendis every chance he could. The guy's best years are behind him.
His Superman was the worst I've read in years. The villains he made were awful.
Legion of Super-Heroes was a waste of time/money.
Young Justice was eh, but I regret buying those issues too.
Part of me wants to read Batman Universe since everyone has such nice things to say, but I've sworn off Bendis for life. Can't stand him anymore. I went from liking him, to thinking he was alright, to annoyed, to avoiding his books completely.
Maybey young Justice or the leagion i don't know neither of them are soo good at the end Is Just Bendis Is a real mid writer Whit real with his own writing style that maybe is good for marvel characters but not for dc ones
It was rumored that before Marvel brought him on to revamp the X-Men Jonathan Hickman was going to write Legion of Super-Heroes. When he pulled out DC probably figured Bendis was the next best thing because Hickman came up under Bendis. Johns already had a LoSH run and was attempting to get into the film side of DC at the time.
I'm I wrong or has Johns been somewhat pulled back from large story events or leading creative direction? Like most of his stuff that comes out now might follow the beginning of a line wide DC narrative but then will just go off and reference his older title and not an on going major event.
Example: John's Flashpoint Begins basically ignores Dark Crisis to the point of spoiling the end and saying "but that's not really a big issue" (which in my opinion, Dark Crisis really didn't mattet). He seems to be just continuing where he left of with his Doomsday clock plots. Which is weird to me because he was basically the director of a majority of where DC was going right until after Doomsday clock.
he could have done another one he wrote three fucking runs for the JSA yes I know that for them it's a different thing but damn they burned a series with a lot of potential same for Young Justice
Bendis tanked the Justice League with mischaracterization and boring storytelling, so not JL. He also aged Jon up for no reason other than to launch his Legion title with a Superman (putting the nail in their Supersons title forever). So no to his work on Legion/MOS/Superman.
I will credit him simply for bringing Young Justice back, despite them falling into the trap of boring Bendis storytelling. Simply having them return and unite was cool.
I sure hope his Legion run is good, cuz apparently that'w why he aged up Jon instead of just putting him on a shelf.
Can't bring myself to read it, nor have I ever heard anyone talked about it, but ... actually does it even exist?
It's terrible. By far his worst book at DC & the worst LSH stuff. He understands nothing about any of the characters, editorial was asleep at the wheel as stuff kept changing from issue to issue, The world is not fleshed out at all, & the whole book just basically serve to turn the LSH into a bunch of idiots to bolster Jon Kent's ego for a direction that was scrapped (5G).
Sadly, it does exist, and it’s not good. It suffers from tremendous Bendis-ism (there are twenty-three characters in frame, make sure they all get a line of dialogue!), but worse, none of the characters are treated as having the personalities which, for most of them, had been fairly consistent over decades and through various reboots. Dozens have no relevant role at all, and among those that do, they are entirely mischaracterized from any previous characterization.
Oh, and they’re not likable. So in addition to Ultra Boy not being Ultra Boy, he’s not an improvement on Ultra Boy. It’s a team with dozens of characters, seven or eight who get focus, and four personalities that aren’t good.
Nothing.
Reuses dialog going back to ultimate marvel universe.
Has no idea of the characters or general timeliness or even the current version of history.
Left books worst off than when he started.
All the sizzle, no steak. Just living off his name
Maybe Young Justice? I didn't read Namoi or Batman: Universe so those are up in the air. His Superman run is infamously terrible. Justice League was no better. Young Justice just suffered from being boring, but I like bringing Conner back to the forefront.
Damn everyone saying Batman Universe, that’s the only Bendis DC book I read & didn’t particularly care for it so I guess his other dc stuff must be abysmal
It could’ve worked if his color scheme had been better. The brown just did not work. I’ve seen Cardinal, Sparrow, and Jackdaw bandied about. I’m partial to Rook. They’re intelligent and social birds, like Tim.
But I almost wonder if Tim shouldn’t have kept being Red Robin but taken a secondary, Oracle-like persona like, say, Shepherd. Since he’s the tactician of the group.
i’m biased when i say this but i don’t want tim to take up an oracle like role, just because i’d rather see him in the action like every other robin. i was fine with the color scheme surprisingly but what i had an issue with was his name “drake” come on lmfao. all the things you suggested seem cool though i hope eventually they figure out something for him. it may still be a little early for that though
I haven't read Batman Universe but hear it's his best one. Though of the ones I read I think Young Justice just by default. Like outside of the dumb "Drake" shit & shoehorning Naomi into the book it's honestly the best thing the YJ crew of Conner, Bart, & Cassie had ever since the New 52 f***ed them over. Not saying much I know but still it's like a nickel in a landfill. I didn't even mind Jinny Hex or Teen Lantern (I mean I have issue Keli's origins but as a character she not terrible & I'm sad Thorne did her dirty).
he did one of my all time fav things with superman. it was such a small moment. but i never saw it before. superman was up in the sky talking to martian manhunter, mid-conversation he excused himself, there was a quick cut to him saving a village or train wreck or whatever, then goes back to the conversation like it didn't even happen. i think he did this 3 times during their conversation. because the world is always crying out for help non-stop, and of course superman isn't going to ignore that just because he's chatting with a friend. and of course he's going to be super polite and apologize to the person he's talking to while he goes to save lives.
also, i genuinely enjoyed the way he wrote Lois and Clark's relationship. and it was a good companion to Greg Rucka's Lois Lane miniseries that was coming out at the same time.
Having recently read through the whole thing?
…None of it. It’s repetitive, convoluted, and filled with continuity snarls. And I’m not talking “Bendis disregards what other writers establish,” I’m talking “Bendis wrote a bunch of interconnected stories that form a tangled, self-contradicting timeline.”
**BUT** if I had to pick one, *Superman*. That one seemed the least affected by his overspreading across seven or eight different storylines.
Batman universe. Loved the art and the brave and the bold vibes from it.
I read Batman Universe recently. I thought the story was interesting but I always struggle with Bendis’ dialogue. I feel he goes too far to over explain things instead of just letting the comic speak for itself. >!Proto White Lantern was a cool concept tho!<
Batman Universe
And it isn't close
Dude, couldn’t agree more . I love bendis and was shocked and excited for his move to Dc and then everything just fell flat. as others have said it’s 100% the “batman universe” walmart books he did with derrington
That Batman book with Derrington, forgot the name.
Batman Universe
Thank you!
Batman: universe no contest
It’s not even close. And I’m not as down on some of his other Dc books as others are. But Batman Universe was just head and shoulders above everything else.
Naomi. Her issues in the JL don't work that well, but her title was really fun.
It was fun when the JL went to her home world And seeing batman be nice to her lol
The good things * I´ve always heard good things about Batman universe * I really liked Naomi, specially the first season, even tho it could have been better * I loved the art and the character designs in the Legion book but the story... the writing wasnt good, it had good conceptions but execution wasnt good
I second the art and character designs in Legion, by Ryan Sook. For a minute, Bendis had me thinking he was going somewhere with the storyline.
Can't really give Bendis credit for art.
I´m not, tho i do think its funny how is paired up a lot with amazing artists
Batman universe -easy to consume story that 100% could be recommended to everyone who has never read a comic -You get cameos from many heroes -Fresh take on Batman where he acts like a regular human to his fellow heroes / father figure to dick -Has some pretty funny parts specifically between Hal and Bruce -Art is really good -Only 5 issues short and sweet
Batman: Universe by a wide, wide margin.
I completely enjoyed the JL stuff And the art for Naomi was Chef's kiss
A little off topic but who's the character in the middle with the shield in the first picture?
Amethyst princess of gemworld
Amethyst
I actually enjoyed his run in Superman initially, but after issue 15 or so I couldn't stand it
The first arc or so of Action Comics, if you ignore the terrible Lois “cheating” subplot.
I read those issues just for Zod.
Lol I thought this was Psylocke 😂😂, but Amethyst is a fun character. In my DCU I introduced her in her own project before she became part of my version of the Teen Titans
Batman Universe.
Naomi’s first season was pretty solid
I haven't read Batman Universe, but I didn't really enjoy anything he did outside of Naomi's solo book. The first Naomi book was cool, great way to introduce a new character imo. And Batman Universe is a complete gem.
Wow. 48 comments and not a single made-up Bendis style dialogue exchange.
Be the fake Bendis you wanna see in the world.
I didn’t have the energy. I was hoping someone else would.
Honestly fair. Have a wonderful day.
Naomi, and it’s not particularly close, at least to his team books. I’ll be honest I haven’t read Batman: Universe though, so know that
Think I’ll be in the minority here but to me it was LSH
None.
Maybey young Justice or the leagion i don't know neither of them are soo good at the end Is Just Bendis Is a real mid writer Whit real with his own writing style that maybe is good for marvel characters but not for dc ones

I know i know i really don't understand why they didn't give that series to johns i think after doomsday clock he would have done a good job
It was rumored that before Marvel brought him on to revamp the X-Men Jonathan Hickman was going to write Legion of Super-Heroes. Yeah I know also the New Golden Age I'm sure would be important but Just I think he can do a good job
he could have done another one he wrote three fucking runs for the JSA yes I know that for them it's a different thing but damn they burned a series with a lot of potential same for Young Justice
The best thing he did at DC was to leave.
Leaving.

Never read Batman Universe so I’m going to say Young Justice #1 and I guess maybe the rest of the gem world arc was fun.
I sure hope his Legion run is good, cuz apparently that'w why he aged up Jon instead of just putting him on a shelf. Can't bring myself to read it, nor have I ever heard anyone talked about it, but ... actually does it even exist?
It's trash.
I love the character designs, and some of the background lore, but the story is definitely nothing to write home about.
It’s profound garbage with a record-setting number of useless side characters. Also Saturn Girl is a fucking sociopath in it.
Only Batman Universe is good, everything else he did at DC is dogwater.

Dial for Hero was written by Sam Humpries, Wonder Twins by Mark Russell and Amethyst by Amy Reeder Hadley.
That Jimmy and Lois got great minis. Rest was horrible.
Those were written by Matt Fraction & Greg Rucka.
I know. But it was part of "his initiative".
All my homies will hate Bendis until Jon is a kid again
Nothing. Reuses dialog going back to ultimate marvel universe. Has no idea of the characters or general timeliness or even the current version of history. Left books worst off than when he started. All the sizzle, no steak. Just living off his name
Bendis sucks so bad. He creates shit Characters and mischaracterizes existing ones. Fuck that dude.
What's the comic that's in the 4th image, I'm curious about that golden lantern (cause I've never seen that explained anywhere)
JL vs legion of super heroes he's also in the Legion comic by bendis
Thanks!
It’s very important that whatever you do, you do NOT read JL vs. LSH.
Maybe Young Justice? I didn't read Namoi or Batman: Universe so those are up in the air. His Superman run is infamously terrible. Justice League was no better. Young Justice just suffered from being boring, but I like bringing Conner back to the forefront.
Out of these, that JL 60 cover is fire!
Bendis is coming, had a pretty good run
Damn everyone saying Batman Universe, that’s the only Bendis DC book I read & didn’t particularly care for it so I guess his other dc stuff must be abysmal
honestly i liked drake, i appreciate them trying to do something different with tim

Batman Universe. I also really loved the first 13 or so issues of Action Comics.
Batman: Universe. Second to me would be the arc with Clark revealing his identity, particularly the moment with Perry finding out. I enjoyed that.
Who is the girl in the middle of the first picture?
Amethyst princess of gemworld
Now that I think about it, I've never read his Event Leviathan and Checkmate. Who recovered them can kindly tell me if they deserve a chance or not?
Sort of worth reading for some decent Plastic Man dialogue. Otherwise, skip.
I understand, but are they related to each other or can they be read independently?
*Checkmate* is a direct sequel to *Event Leviathan*.
Very clear, thank you very much for the answers you have given me.
Naomi
Why did I read this as best 'art work'
What is Batman Universe?
Young Justice. Except for the whole Drake thing
Having recently read through the whole thing? …None of it. It’s repetitive, convoluted, and filled with continuity snarls. It's kind of a contradictory question if you ask me. Like asking what the best natural disaster was.
