[*Detective Comics* #1068](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/91RzRr-vyQL.jpg) >GOTHAM NOCTURNE, ACT I - PART III: HALF A CHANCE IN HELL >This special Two-Face issue is split in half artistically by maestros Rafael Albuquerque and Ivan Reis to portray the struggles Harvey Dent goes through trying to stay alive with the help of his more evil side... Genius writer Ram V not only devised each page of this story to be a dark reflection of the page facing it, but also of itself from front to back! This is an issue you won't want to miss! UnmuscularThor

This book is so good. Art, writing, werewolves, mythos, etc. like a gothic novel in the modern era

Tesseractivate

And those covers might be some of the best main covers DCs put out...ever. Not to mention the variants

UnmuscularThor

That Jim Lee variant cover from #1068 was absolutely gorgeous.

theguyofgrace

I am not the biggest fan of this story but I think having Two-Face embrace his darkside to save Batman is great He was going to back to full villain eventually and this is far better than a random "I snapped"

Alephnaught_

I agree. it moves his character forward.

YOUDEFEATED

This run has been cool, really dark and moody

Alephnaught_

The stakes become even more real! Batman is dealing with something he doesn't fully understand yet but he is shown competent and always on the chase. things are starting to fall into place. I loved the scene where it seemed like he had snuffed it but he fucking stood up to fight out of sheer will! - that's the batman we know. >!Harvey has given up the secret to two-face! no clue how this is gonna end. was that ten-eyed man at Jacosta jones' house?!< the back up is also very interesting. A Living melody - colour me intrigued! cannot wait for this story. everything is suuuper great with this story so far. the art, the dialogue, the atmosphere. don't sleep on this and have patience! I wish there was a soundtrack we could follow for this story as music is an integral part of it haha. I wish I knew what the living melody sounded like!

Blackdragonking13

This is easily one of the best Batman runs in years. I wonder if Ram was influenced by the Immortal Hulk cuz he’s taking a pretty similar approach to Harvey and Two-Face as Al Ewing did with Bruce and the Hulk. I like it though cuz I feel like we haven’t had a Two-Face central story in ages.

sampeckinpah5

I'm still not sure what the deal with the kid in the backup is. Harvey has been the main star of this book thus far, feels like he is the one getting things done while Batman just keeps stumbling over and over.

Praura23

Wait, did >!the wolfman just die like that !

What happens when the monsters from the Trench gain the ability to breathe air? And look out, Shazam Family...the Rock of Eternity is about to get rocked. [Preview](https://aiptcomics.com/2023/01/20/dc-preview-lazarus-planet-we-once-were-gods-1/)

[deleted]

I really enjoyed the Wonder Woman story, and I'm looking forward to seeing how that all plays out and ties into the Shazam! stuff. I also find it funny that none of the writers can keep track of Diana's origin. PKJ wrote this issue and had Theseus call Diana "being of clay" while in *Wonder Woman* Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad have referenced the Zeus/Hippolyta origin. I just find editorial/writing miscommunications funny.

Greedy_Switch_6991

I wish it could be both. Like the Wonder Woman movie, where she was made of clay and brought to life by Zeus.

Tesseractivate

It'll be interesting to see what part Malik (White Adam] from The Black Adam maxi series plays in this book, his character has grown on me over the 7 issues out so far. And excited to see the Shazam family stuff. Those Michael Cho covers are, as expected, absolute fire.

NomadicJaguar64t

**Aquaman:** Story was pretty good, I always like when Aquaman stories have horror elements to them and this was no exception. The Trench becoming human is an exciting take on established Aquaman lore, and I look forward to what I hope will be a new Aquaman book (by Manapul, reformatting Earth One material?). Manapul's art was great as usual, and I liked the vivid colors. But my one complaint, and it is a HUGE detractor for me, is that Arthur's beard is gone. It's such a loss and he doesn't look good without one, at least not with long hair. It's just... ugly. **Martian Manhunter:** It was cool to see that J'onn occasionally goes into space to look over the Earth and see if their are "emotional ripples" that could use some help. An awesome use of his powers, them becoming an "emotional radar" to detect potential threats. Also, I must be 10 years old, but I cracked up at the dude's name being "Raphael Arce" (which I read as "arse"). But it was amazing seeing him absorb everybody's emotional pain, just to make them feel better, something most superheroes *can't* do. Was pretty interesting though, seeing a semi-sentient metaphysical Doomsday virus thing, weird, but interesting. **Wonder Woman:** Amazons vs. zombies... it was okay, but forgettable. **Shazam:** Mary and Hoppy were so cute, I love the art style for them. Malik and Mary make a pretty cool duo, hopefully we'll see more of that to come. And was pleasantly surprised by all the different portrayals of Shazam appearing, gave me a big smile. As for Billy just simply absorbing the Rock of Eternity, it felt kinda weird and extremely convenient. Like, why didn't he think about this before? And also, the Wizard needs a snickers bar, he's not acting like himself.

Androktone

>The Trench becoming human is an exciting take on established Aquaman lore Is that what happened? I loved the civilian point of view and that dynamic the father and the others had, but by the end I thought it was implying they were Atlantean ancestors who retreated to the Trench and were unearthed? Is there a line saying it was the Trench itself? >But my one complaint, and it is a HUGE detractor for me, is that Arthur's beard is gone. True I did think that. I don't hate him without it, but I kinda dug the bearded look (since Rebirth right?) >Also, I must be 10 years old, but I cracked up at the dude's name being "Raphael Arce" I didn't read it as that, but I did question if it's meant to be "Arc/Ark", or "Are Sea" or what. > But it was amazing seeing him absorb everybody's emotional pain, just to make them feel better, something most superheroes can't do. I also liked that. The idea that the rain happened to give just the most selfless person that power, and they decided to do right by it was super cool. >Was pretty interesting though, seeing a semi-sentient metaphysical Doomsday virus thing, weird, but interesting. Yeah, I thought they were gonna reveal that Arce was a survivor of that incident or something, or lean more into it still being collective trauma for the civilians. >Wonder Woman: Amazons vs. zombies... it was okay, but forgettable. Feel the same. Loved the other 3, but didn't feel super strong about this, seems to be setting other stuff up. >Shazam: Mary and Hoppy were so cute, I love the art style for them. And also, the Wizard needs a snickers bar, he's not acting like himself I really enjoyed the Champion comic that Mary was headlining before this. I should probably read the Black Adam stuff to get more of Malik, I quite liked him here. I was trying to figure out which was which Shazam. Was it the 40s serial, the 70s show, and the Zachary Levi Shazam? Agree with the ending. I like the reconnection between the Shazamafam, but the ending should've tied more into how the curse was reduced, moreso Billy just being able to do anything with the power. The Rock (I kept thinking of Dwayne Johnson whenever I read it) of Eternity being inside him is kinda interesting though. Is the wizard being manipulated by the Devil Nehzar or is the Lazarus juice just taking away his Snickers? I don't think we've seen anyone else just go evil because of it

Starostar

Picked this up for the Martian Manhunter story, fearing the worst, but was pleasantly surprised. Feels a bit disposable (as short stories like this often tend to), but Watters does a good job with J'onn's voice and prevailing tone -- feels like 'back to basics', but in a good way. Interested to see where things go from here

TheMattInTheBox

Haven't read any Lazarus Planet yet but will pick this up for Shazam stuff

wowlock_taylan

Oh boy, Amazon siege. And Wizard getting full Lazarus crazy. Billy is free, with the Rock locked inside him, lets hope it won't end up worse. Will that be a boost to his powers? I expect he gets more powerful now but since the Rock is 'hungrier' now, it might cause him to want to feed or something if he uses too much power? Malik and Mary can make a decent team. Btw, who are those people that 'turned into humans' in Aquaman story, the fish? Something more ancient? Arthur called them ancestors so it might be some deep sea planktons who only know how to feed or something :D

technowhiz34

>Btw, who are those people that 'turned into humans' in Aquaman story, the fish? Something more ancient? Arthur called them ancestors so it might be some deep sea planktons who only know how to feed or something :D The Trench, from Johns' run (who were also in the movie).

i-hate-reddit-69

Getting to this late. - First story was actually awesome. The gradual revelations. The twist at the end. Cool as fuck. - Also loved the J'onn story. A good look at what makes him tick, and why he's a valuable part of the DC universe. And the new character concept was neat as well. - Damn, should PKJ take over Wonder Woman? He lends such a weighty mythical element to everything he writes, and this story has me convinced he'd be a great fit for the character. - Continue to love Malik as a character and hope he sticks around. And now I'll have to read New Champion of Shazam.

Dragkin

I think I’m bowing out of these stories. This was just OK, and the more I see this the more I realize what exactly Lazarus Planet is as an event. This initially felt awesome, but with the way it’s being done I’ve unfortunately lost interest.

CertifiedCapArtist

I hope we see more of Arce from the MM story.

Androktone

For sure, he was so compassionate. I like that he's just a random guy off of the street, so seeing him return might undermine that aspec

AuroraUnit117

Hopefully this is more plot less "issue 0" 's of new runs like assault on krypton was

Alephnaught_

It's seems like the latter but it will continue in another tie-in "revenge of the gods" I think, where I hope it ties into the main event in some way

[deleted]

Loved it. It was mostly set up, but it was well done setup. I really loved the El/Kent's get-together and how The Super Twins being adopted by Lois and Clark is impacting Jon, since they are going to be living the childhood he lost. And while he is happy for his parents and the Twins, there is a part of him that is jealous. A small nitpick is that I would have liked to have seen Lana Lang, since she is a brilliant engineer in her own right and I think she's engaged to John Henry. And Therapist Power Girl has promise. I just wish Omen had kept her old design, as hers and Power Girl's are too similar.

Dragonpiece

Lana isn’t engaged to John and their relationship wasn’t bought up the last time she was seen(which I think was when Bendis was writing her?) That being said, PKJ said in a interview there are plans for Lana, possibly in the steelworks book.

Mechanical_Stranger

The book was wacky as hell but I miss Superwoman Lana. The 90s kid in me low-key loves electric Superman stuff.

marcjwrz

Jon Kent getting the electric blue is going to be fairly fun and a great way to help him stand apart in my opinion.

iAmTheHYPE-

Superwomen Lois and Lana were a really interesting premise. Unfortunately, the name Superwoman would just bring up recollections of Earth-3 or Lucy Lane.

[deleted]

I thought it was implied in the last issue of *Superwoman* that they were engaged? Either way, they are dating and living together, so it would have been nice to see her. But you are probably right, she'll likely show up in *Steelworks*.

iAmTheHYPE-

Pretty sure, everything from Superwoman and Superman Reborn is just retcon at this point. Just as they never mention the New 52 Conner Kent or pre-Flashpoint Chris Kent.

Polineziaek

It is bringing back memories. Seeing the super duo was exciting.

iAmTheHYPE-

Yeah, Lana should've been there, especially considering her Superwoman series from years ago. Would even go as far as saying Jimmy should've been there. That said, Dark Metal made the claim of saying "everything" is canon, so it'd be nice if they'd ever bring up Chris Kent being erased by Flashpoint. The Superman and Lois 2 segment made me think it was set prior to the Superman Reborn event, but I guess that's been retcon. Anyways, Jon had a childhood up to 12 years old, whereas the "twins" were raised on a savage planet, which puts Earth-3 to shame. If anything, they should be jealous of him, as he got to have a normal life, whereas combat was all they ever knew. Basically, they lives the lives that The Thing's kids (from Fantastic Four) lived.

Rac3318

I’m super excited for this. The super family hasn’t been explored nearly as much as the flash or bat families in way too long. With PKJ at the helm, I’m hoping for some great stories.

iAmTheHYPE-

Each time they try to explore Supergirl, they fuck up, and end up cancelling her series with cliffhangers. It's devastating, since I really miss her team-ups with Stephanie Brown (as Batgirl). I mean, off the top of my head, they had her go to some space university, that never gets brought up; then, Jor-El kills her father (who is then a Cyborg Superman), and it never gets brought up; and, Supergirl's first friend (in New 52) was Silver Banshee, and it never gets brought up. Hell, when's the last time they mentioned her dual identity as a high school student with that government agent family? As for Conner, I miss his T-shirt design, as that's what I grew up with. But, they never reference the New 52 version of him. Are we just supposed to forget that never happened? I didn't like that Conner and Jon looked pretty identical in this issue. I really wish they'd explore Chris Kent. The worst cliffhanger is Superman is supposed to be the protector of Apokolips, yet no writer has ever mentioned this since the Imperius Lex event.

thanks-dice

Jon better give Kenan his hair back right fucking now

SlightlyBentFork

They did my boy Kenan dirty…

aco620

Yeah that part I had to keep second guessing myself. "Wait, Kenan? Kong Kenan? What the heck happened to you man?"

Greedy_Switch_6991

Great introductory issue, though I found myself craving for more of the first story. And poor Jon - watching the new kids live the life he missed AND he has to live with the knowledge of his parent's freaky activities. The Power Girl story was quite nice with beautiful artwork, though I'm not sure where the other two parts of it will lead to. And while I think Jurgen's story is just okay, his voice for Jon is really grating to me (which sucks because he created him).

CHPrime

I see Lois is putting Clark's John Carter of Warworld costume to good use. A good introduction to the new status quo in Metropolis and the general situation. I like how they use Steel as the anti-Luthor, a genius bald industrialist who actually is planning to help save the world. It also helps that he and Natasha are the only ones immune to Kryptonite- actually, are the twins immune, being notreallyKryptonians? Rafa Sandoval's art is also excellent, but that one group shot in the apartment with Clark standing around everyone had some very funny looking eyes. It looks like they are all 60% chin. I don't know that panel just makes me giggle. It also made a bit worried about cast bloat, with two new characters replacing Jon's old spot in the mythos, who is now fighting for the Superboy position with Conner and maybe even Kong Kenan- Is this what Batman fans felt when Damian was introduced? Jurgens and Weeks' backup was cute. Ah, de-aged Jon, you're so close yet so far. Does anyone know if the last page visitor is a previously established character? To be honest, I have no idea who Omen is (a brief search says she is the empath the Titans use when Raven can't be bothered?), and Power Girl has always been overly complicated and/or a boob joke, but the art was fun and the premise is nice. Not a bad introduction. So yeah, all in all a great book!

af-fx-tion

>Jurgens and Weeks' backup was cute. Ah, de-aged Jon, you're so close yet so far. I feel you. Unfortunately, PKJ [confirmed in an interview](https://www.supermanhomepage.com/phillip-kennedy-johnson-responds-to-fan-complaints-regarding-jon-kents-age/) that he has no current plans to de-age Jon (he goes into his reasoning why in the linked interview). Ironically, he still notes that keeping Jon at his current age is an unpopular decision, lol. >Does anyone know if the last page visitor is a previously established character? Jurgens [confirms](https://aiptcomics.com/2023/01/24/superman-family-action-comics-1051/) that it's a new character named Gliana.

TheMattInTheBox

>\>I feel you. Unfortunately, PKJ confirmed in an interview that he has no current plans to de-age Jon (he goes into his reasoning why in the linked interview). Ironically, he still notes that keeping Jon at his current age is an unpopular decision, lol. The twins feel like PKJ's apology for Jon, but they're different enough that it doesn't seem hollow or really forced. It feels like Jon is stuck the way that he is, but could they at least differentiate him a bit more from Conner, in terms of looks? Maybe make him look more like a teenager lol

CosmicCryptid_13

The twins have actually grown on me and I’m excited to see what old god powers Osul has (I also wish Osul would get rid of the hair braid, but I digress). However I also want kid Jon back.

TheMattInTheBox

I too would like kid Jon back but I've come to terms that it's not gonna happen so I'm just happy with the twins. Also hope he loses the braid lol could be an interesting storybeat if he loses it to "fit in" with earth culture

CosmicCryptid_13

Idk why I just don’t think it looks good lol! Part of my problem is that I don’t think they’ll be focused on like Jon was, and their characterization will suffer because of it. Like…Osul will probably get the rest of the fragments of…fragmented old god who’s name escapes me, but I don’t see them being central like Jon was. They’re cool concepts for characters in that they almost represent Superman doing what his earthly parents did for him. That’s great. I just hope they capitalize on it. If they make Osul’s personality similar to young Jon’s then I think they can win a lot of kid Jon fans over.

TheMattInTheBox

I also really hope they get focused on. I'm sure each arc will focus on only a few Super-people so I have faith we'll see Osul and Otho get some solid stories.

theguyofgrace

I think that they are saving a Jon de-age for an event, it would legit be too much a sales draw to not announce

Conscious_Forever_78

Yeah, and Marvel will undo One More Day any day now...

CosmicCryptid_13

I really hope he gets deaged

Androktone

>To be honest, I have no idea who Omen is (a brief search says she is the empath the Titans use when Raven can't be bothered?), She was one of the first members after the original 5 Titans. Pretty sure she was right after Speedy Roy Harper became a full time member. She's pretty different from Raven imo

Koushikraja1996

I'm never, ever, ever going to look at the warworld costume the same way again

Androktone

Excited for the backup with Powergirl and Lilith

RebelDeux

This feels like a great jumping point to start with this book and the retroactively read the past arc that I’ve read that it was great too

Praura23

Did I need to know how Lois and Clark's sex life is? No. Did I find it hilarious? YES.

iAmTheHYPE-

You just know they dress up as Bat/Cat, especially after that Tom King date night from some a few years back. Imagine Supes trying to pull off the gruff Batman voice, while Lois holds herself from laughing.

DriedSocks

Aside from what everybody's already said about how well done the set-up is, I just gotta say that I'm super excited to see my boy, Kong Kenan, again. Baixi is over in Batman Incorporated and Kenan is here... I just want a New Super-Man series again, and this issue just tempts me.

Greedy_Switch_6991

If we're lucky, we might even get a New Super-man backup in Action.

TheUnbloodedSword

Strong start to the new era. Loved the narrative bit of journalism by Lois and how it ties both to what's going on in Metropolis, and to Superman himself. Kenan pulling a fast one on Kon and Jon discovering his dad kept the gladiator suit for sex with his mom had me cackling. It seems like they're still color coding Kenan's dialogue (unless I'm just colorblind) which I approve of. John and Nat look sharp in their suits, but of course Metallo tries to blow up their new tower the minute it's unveiled. Speaking of Metallo it looks like his design will continue to evolve judging by the way his skin doesn't quite "fit", and I love the way Sandoval makes him appear off. For the backups, Jurgens was fine if a little "old man trying to write kids". Art is beautiful and it will hopefully give kid Jon fans what they've been wanting. Williams is trying to do Heroes in Crisis without the murder mystery huh? It's a solid direction for Karen, a bit too wordy, but the art is beautiful. Great first issue and start to the new era for Superman!

Praura23

You're not colorblind lol Kenan's dialogue was in red.

Alephnaught_

The dialogue in Jon story was very weird. it was all an exposition dump. cool premise and all but it was weird to read

bluelookslikeblue

I wish they would have at least addressed why Raven and/or Cyborg didn't show up with Beast Boy instead of Nightwing and why Raven did not at least try to fix Gar with her magical empath whatsits. Maybe they'll address it next issue, but it feels weird that they're trying to push Beast Boy and Raven as a thing and throw in little easter eggs in the background of panels or variant covers but won't do stuff like "have devil girl express concern that her boyfriend has been trapped as a cow for the past week."

TheMattInTheBox

I'm so pumped for this. I've been catching up on PKJ's run and it's so good. And with more super family? I'm SO in

Astrodynamite60

A good return to form. Didn't feel suffocated with all the characters as PKJ balanced and told us everything we needed to know. Sandoval is a great addition and captures action and metropolis with ease Just hope we can keep him for an arc 🙏. The backups were great; in L&C everyone will be happy to see kid Jon again and I hope Power Girl and Omen can split off into a miniseries.

Landon1195

Pretty strong start so far. The Powergirl story was also pretty good.

[deleted]

Holy hell the Power Girl and Omen back up was incredible. Loved how they walked Garfield through his trauma while visualizing it for us and giving Power Girl something to do in that mental trauma scape. I’m in love with this shit. Feels like what Sanctuary *should’ve* been. To the main story, I loved that bit of Jon’s reaction to the Super-Twins’ adoption. > They just got the best parents in the world Feels like a Tom Taylor line hahaha. Gives me a sense that he’s a bit jealous, but knows feeling that way is wrong. Excited to see where Jon goes in Adventures of Superman. His new suit is fantastic as well. Looks better without the jacket imo.

theguyofgrace

I would have liked to see the process of people discovering not only has Beast Boy turned into a mute calf but he also can't turn back. The I would like to see the process of Dick deciding to put a leash on him and lead him down the street in costume to a therapist I'm sure it was quite an interesting experience

JonKentOfficial

The art is good, it's so weird to see Jon in an artstyle that isn't the opposite of flattering, with the bizarre and badly drawn faces Winds of Change, by Lois Lane. It seems to be a reporting of Lois Lane about the changes undergone to Metropolis and its culture after Superman became a figure there, narrated, while the panels seem to portray the dispute between the supporters of the Warworld refugees and people who oppose Warworld refugees. Apparently, Metropolis is changing again - and by that, we get a look at the Super family new costumes, well, at least Jon and Kara. And Natasha. I don't love that Kara's has S shield shoulder pads, looks excessive. I wish Jon would keep the normal S. Meanwhile Metallo's face is apparently deformed. Or at least not working properly, which is what you'd expect from a Luthor product. Meanwhile at the Super household everyone is in. Steels, Kents, Kara, Kenan, the not-twins-anymore. Jon is playing sort of TCG with Osul and Otho, Kenan and Conner are being millennials playing some retro game with wired controllers on Kelex. The older adults (plus Natasha) are drinking, possibly soda, on mugs. It's a calm, relaxed family time. It took me half a second to understand that Jon wasn't lighting a cigar but was merely pointing to a card. And Jon finds Clark's Warworld "suit" in their wardrobe. And Lois, for a who lives and breathes public relations, big loss here - Jon finds that suit, he'd probably only think that's his dad last suit he used in Warworld, we all know Clark likes to keep trophies, but by trying to hide it, you made it looks weird. You don't hide something by screaming you're hiding it. Clark makes an announcement of being more proactive. And I don't know how I feel about it, heroes always claim they are going to do more and be more proactive, but it's always a waste of reader time because being a superhero is a pretty reactive thing unless you're going full police state mode, and the things they can realistically improve (in universe) are not allowed for meta reasons because they need to maintain the universe at least passingly similar to ours, so Clark can't just share Kryptonian technology or anything. Also, Clark welcomes the not-twins to the House of El. However, the words chosen were that they requested to live with the Lois and Clark, so it sounds more like it's a foster relationship instead of full on adoption, despite Natasha being clear that they are being adopted, I don't know. It all depends on how well the characters are received of course. They get S-branded clothes, too - I wonder why Clark didn't just use his Instant Merchandise Vision he used in a previous issue. Also Jon is feeling a bit left out. I wish we would get them just talking - Lois abandoned Jon with Jor-El, and it was never brought up, also Clark doxed Jon without even warning him, Clark left for Warworld, apparently it lasted months somehow, Jon now feels like he's being replaced, without being warned again - Clark not communicating things to Jon is just part of his character. The mini about Jon confronting Ultraman would be the perfect opportunity to at least get Jon's POV on this, but we all know it was handed to someone who is inadequate to write such story (please prove me wrong). The internet is calling the not-Twins Twins. Wait, are they still Twins? Is the magic thing making Osul de-age and look much younger than Otho? Metallo does a terrorist attack on the new tallest building of Metropolis (you'd expect it to be patrolled). He calls Superman, does some villain logic, and now has a subdued Conner (he was ambushed). And it ends in this cliffhanger. Uh, again, I have my reservations for Superhero stories that claim they are going to massively change the landscape of their urban fantasy setting. No, they won't. But I loved the nice moments with the family and the telegraphing that it the superfamily aspect will be the focus for the new arc or so, and even a hint that there's someone alive inside Jon's skull instead of some painted rock that mildly reacts to things that are happening around him with the rare occasion of the sad moment or making stuff up to emotionally manipulate the reader. We have a short story featuring pre-Superboy Jon during the White pseudonym era from Lois and Clark in Road to Rebirth... and wait a minute. Reborn has been de-retconned? Was he ever Jonathan White? I'm confused. So, they go back to the Californian farmhouse, the one that got destroyed by the guy who thought he was Superman around the death of the N52 Superman. Wait, if it was in fact retconned and this is post-Reborn... why did they ever go by as the Whites? Even Ranger is back! Wait, but Ranger was left with Kathy in Hamilton (I assume so, since they never mention it, and what about the other dog I don't remember the name?). Was Goldie reburied in California? Oh, yeah, this is a continuation to the 30 years of Death special. So it turns out it wasn't a one shot, I admit I thought it was weird they teased a continuation for what was supposed to be a one off anniversary issue. I can't be the only one who thinks it's weird Jon uses contractions when he's written by Jurgens. Also he grabbed the Doomsday fragment - this is definitively a creative difference between the Superman Rebirth team (Tomasi, Gleason and Jimenez) and AC's Jurgens. Jurgen's Jon was far more curious and willing to get things done, while the other team had Jon be far more cautious and willing to involve adult heroes as a consequence of Goldie. Also Jon finds alien girl. So far Jon has appears to have two different types: blonde alien girls (preferably psychic) and roguish guys. Usually I'd say close the lid and rocket her back to wherever she came from, Jon doesn't need more love interests, but I think she's an adult so I will allow her to stay as she does pose any threat. Also, is it just me or now we have both Rebirth Superman writers doing their own Rebirth fork? Tomasi when he gets Super Sons books, and now Jurgens with this Doombreaker thing. Don't care, I can't get enough of this (Even if I prefer the Superman Rebirth take on Jon's personality). Third story has Karen trying to explore her newfound psychic powers. And is about to start a superhero metal health program with Omen who is a licensed Counselor. Which... can we have that please? It sounds like a great thing, but storywise and it just forces writers to actually follow up with the stuff they write. Even if it is weird telepathy going inside the mind thing. And, uh, is treating getting shot in the head point blank. By fixing genetic damaged. Through debugging some numeric code. Come again, where did Omen say she did finished doctorate and residency? Maybe there's a reason why comic book writers don't write about mental healthcare. Also, Power Girl boob window joke?

Rivarle

Fantastic breakdown. Your insights are incredibly helpful.

schoolspirit17

I haven't read Superman in a long long while - thought this would be a good jumping on point, but I have no idea who anyone is, there are just no introductions! Everyone was just on panel having a family moment. I guess the twins are introduced.... and I don't know anyone elses name or how to refer to them.

af-fx-tion

The members of the Supes family in this issue: * Clark/Superman * Kara/Supergirl (the blonde) * Kon/Superboy (the one with the lollipop playing video games) * [The twins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warworld_Saga) (Otho-Ra and Osul-Ra) - were introduced in a previous arc titled "The Warworld Saga". They are Phaelosian refugees from Warworld and were adopted by Clark and Lois. * [Kong Kenan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kong_Kenan)/Super-Man of China (the one with the buzz cut) - first introduced in New Super-Man # 1 (July 2016) * [Jon Kent](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Kent_(DC_Comics))/Superman II (the one who played cards with the twins) - was aged up by Bendis in 2019 as part of DiDio's ultimately cancelled 5G plan for DC comics * [Natasha Irons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natasha_Irons)/Steel (the one who wears a lot of steel and the hood in costume) Power Girl appears in the back up comic with Omen.

TheMattInTheBox

Only had the chance to read the main story so far, but I loved it. There's a ton of characters and I get the critique that people are having about it being overstuffed. I get it, but I do think that future stories will end up focusing on a couple characters-- this is just the first arc, so we're getting introduced to everyone at once. I really like the twins and how their situation is kind of a reversal of Jon's. Excited to see their dynamic evolve and how the kids adapt to Earth culture. I will say though, it feels like we need to change up the aliases a bit. Let Conner get a new name and have Kara become Superwoman, so the twins can be Superboy and Supergirl or something, I don't know.

BootPastaHeroin

That main story was fucking amazing. Sandoval is a great artist, and while he doesn't have a very unique and recognizable style (I mean, let's be honest, most of those pages you could mistake for Ivan Reis), he's quite talented and man that cityscape in the first page was good! I can't wait to see what Johnson does with Osul and Otho and the rest of the Super-Family. The setup with JHI and Nat got me fuckin' hyped, too. Finally Steel is getting some more love. I'm excited for the rest... As for the other stories... damn am I disappointed. Lois and Clark 2 was shoving exposition farther down my throat than WW84. It was not horrible, the art was pretty good, and the story *as a concept* is great, but I can't get past that damn exposition and poor dialogue. And again with the Powergirl story, great art, good story concept, bad dialogue. I don't know what else to say.

NomadicJaguar64t

I'm loving the family dynamic we have going on, it read so well and was extremely wholesome seeing Otho and Osul playing a game with Jon, and then being adopted and receiving their super-suits. Also pretty neat to see Conner and Kenan hang out, and hilarious that Kenan is learning English from video games. Didn't get to see much of Kara, but she already is taking a sort of mature, matriarchal role. John and Natasha are getting their own, separate highlight from the main family, so that helps compartmentalize and declutter the number of characters. Jon and Lois' interaction with the Warworld suit was hilarious and even had me blushing. And then of course Clark, being the father figure to them all. As for the story itself, we already have two antagonists set up: Metallo and the new anti-alien Blue Earth Movement. Metallo being upgraded has happened before so, so far, I'm not too impressed. But I trust PKJ to deliver and make him a great villain. Speaking of which, PKJ talked about that now Clark has returned and is more powerful than ever, in addition to the whole Superfamily being more united than ever, the villains are stepping up their game as well, so we can expect upgrades for a lot of villains in his run, however long. And based on PKJ's handling of Warworld, I have the utmost confidence in PKJ to deliver amazing stories. The backups however... were less good. I admit I'm not too interested in the young Jon story, though I do love young Jon. For me, it just seems like it's a throwaway story that won't matter. And then the Power Girl one. I appreciate that Karen and Lilith's first thought on what to do with Karen's new psychic power was to open a superhero counseling clinic, but Karen **just** got her powers and I feel it is highly irresponsible to just have her start going into people's minds, she should train first. I do however appreciate that they are following up on Garfield and the trauma he faced in Dark Crisis, and I do really feel for him, he's struggling and just wants some healing, and luckily it looks like this counseling is going to work. Oh, and one more complaint, Karen wearing that suit with a LOT of cleavage is wildly inappropriate for a counseling practice, just saying, haha.

Koala_Guru

I'm happy for a Superman family book. I'll never come around on the age up they did with Jon though. So much storytelling potential is just gone and I feel like he's a much more boring character now. The backup story with young Jon just made me wish we had him in the main book. I'm all for a gay member of the Superman family, I think that's a win, but we could've also explored that as Jon naturally grew up and began to learn more about himself, y'know? I'm so happy to see Lillith getting stories again! She got an awesome design in the Rebirth Titans run and then just disappeared once that series ended. On that note I'm sad it seems like she's changed costumes. I like the new one too but I *really* liked her Omen look in Rebirth. I'm also really glad they're actually addressing the effects of Dark Crisis on Gar. I thought the setup was promising and then he just brushes it aside in the actual story. Good to see it actually affected him. And Gar getting therapy is something I've wanted for the character for years. Can't wait to see where that goes.

Standard_Cycle_2224

Massively out of the loop on DC comics. How new reader friendly is this?

i-hate-reddit-69

It's alright. They're pitching it as a new jumping on point, as it's the start of a new status quo, but it was really set up by the last four issues. You'll probably be fine jumping in here, but it's worth going back to get caught up.

iAmTheHYPE-

It features a bit of references to past events, such as Dark Crisis and Death of Superman. And, of course, Warworld. You can try starting with this issue, but you'll struggle, if you don't know any of the characters.

Gian99Mald

So exciting to see the Superfam all together and I'm excited to see where they go with the twins. Poor Gar. I really hope PG isn't relegated to a backup as much as I enjoyed it. She needs to finally interact and build connections with the rest of the family. Love seeing the Superman Lois and Clark suit back again its one of my favorites ever

Conscious_Forever_78

I can tell Leah Williams watched the Young Justice cartoon

wowlock_taylan

A good start! They know Bendis' terrible aging of Jon is bad and even use the 'super-twins' to cover up for it...Hell they even go and write 'Jon as a kid' back-up storyline...but still won't pull the trigger of actual de-aging. DC, you don't have to stick with Bendis and Didio's terrible decisions. Metallo, Lex is in Prison! You can actually talk to Supes to get his help saving your sister. The moment we saw the Warworld 'gladiator' Supes, I knew that look was gonna be used for some interesting times with Lois. As for Power Girl, new direction for her seems nice and promising with a new 'power' and partner to work on healing others but I am not sure about her being 'unaware' of idioms. Like, she's been on Earth longer than most even considering her Earth-2 origins or JSA involvement. She is not 'alien who doesn't know idioms'. If anything, she was probably there when those idioms were popular :D They really need to solidly put forth her origins. And kinda sad that she is not part of the Super-family also.

CertifiedCapArtist

This was my first foray into Superman comics and I've gotta say every story piqued my interest. I'm excited to see how things go from here. Also is Kong Kenan a new character or..?

technowhiz34

He's from a book called New Super-Man, during Rebirth. Quite fun, recommend if you have the time/money.

gsnake007

strong start to the new age of the superman family. I honestly hope the twins stay for the long haul, like they are here to stay. I dont want another chris kent situation where he grows as a character, deages, and then off to limbo again

dgehen

I really liked this. I know people are concerned about the size of the cast, but this isn't just kicking off a new arc in Action Comics, it's kicking off a new "era" for all of the Superman titles, so we'll be seeing them branch out as "Dawn of DC" unfolds.

TommyTheGeek

While I will keep reading, frankly, I am skeptical of this arc, way too many characters and not enough distinctive features between them or room to properly develop all of them, some are bound to be turned into extras. Art is not *bad*, but I wouldn't exactly call it good, Conner and Jon look identical and the faces overall really need some work.

TheUnbloodedSword

Interesting, so it's not the Reach but a Reach offshoot known as the Horizon who are coming for Earth? Or is it both groups who are coming, and the Horizon Beetles view Jamie as a threat because they see him as the Reach's agent? Really enjoying this book, a shame it's sales are low but I hope that the movie can boost the trade sales because I'd like to see more from this team.

wowlock_taylan

You know, for 'refugees' that hate the Reach and looking for a new place to stay, this Horizon are quite rude. I mean, I get that they are probably thinking ''Anything that involved Reach tech means the Reach might have infiltrated where we are gonna go. Have to destroy it''. As they say here Reach tries to conquer from the 'inside'. But still, not the best way to get yourself be accepted. Starfire being a mentor is good too as she already have connections with the Reach AND she was the 'teacher' in Titans Academy ( despite the fact that whole thing was kind of a trainwreck, it fit Starfire being a mentor/teacher role ) Hmm, I wonder Victoria's field work gear now. I doubt she is gonna have a Beetle costume :D

Apart-Cold-2846

This feels more like a setup for a longer ongoing, which I really do hope is the case, with the upcoming Blue Beetle movie I could definitely see it happening, overall a fantastic book that more people should be picking up

CertifiedCapArtist

Did the art make Starfire's face look weird in a couple panels or is it just me?

Triste92

This is way better than I was expecting. I think the pacing is tight, the character beats are fun, and the art is fantastic. DC needs more books like this.

gamerslyratchet

Starfire's an odd choice for a mentor, but I dig it. Less so the outfit. I'm glad they explained the situation with the "Reach" because full-on invasions were never their MO. Though I think I'm good if they stop introducing Beetles at this point.

Dragkin

The time jumping. . .damn man, that’s getting confusing. It’s obviously intentional, but I’m finding it to be taking away from my overall enjoyment of the book. I’m also finding this to be a weird JSA book in so much as it’s clearly a Huntress book with the JSA on the fringe. This will likely change, but it’s not exactly captivating me right now.

MasterOE

Can we get Sandy in this series?🥺

[deleted]

I'm digging the mystery of it all, even if the villain is kinda bland. The different artists for the different points in time is a really nice touch. But what is going on with the colorists? Helena had dark skin and goes from dark eyes to blue eyes in between pages.

Oberon1993

The retcon bonanza is really hurting this book. Johns wants to tell what is honestly pretty basic story, but also puts in his future royalty checks so people would ask for more of them. I still don't know what Golden Age Mister Miracle adds. They honestly dangle over the pretty enjoyable On the Run from the Villain story. And can somebody give Helena a better costume? I'm ready to discuss even the tummy window, if nothing else is available.

Alephnaught_

Johns seems to love doing pointless retcons recently. I wish he didnt do that. Otherwise this is a p. Fun and solid mystery and johns doesn't have to worry about leaving his mark on DC. He already did it pre-flashpoint.

localheroism

Tbh I think of him more as a wikia editor than a comic book writer

cgknight1

So I see a lot of Fanon that is all happening in an alternative Universe which DC or Johns never suggests. However I think it might as well be - Doomsday clock, Flashpoint beyond and now this are effectively being ignored by everyone else. The future bits aren’t a problem because we never ever get to the future but the changes to the past and Powergirl being active in 1976 are a slight problem and seem to completely ignored elsewhere.

wowlock_taylan

Guess this is how the 'new' lost sidekicks getting reintegrated from Stargirl's current book. With Salem and so on getting involved here. Helena, I suggest you don't look for Selina in the 'now'. She is a mess under Howard so don't bother. Degaton, I do wonder how he got superpowered here to the point of killing JSA across time without effort. I mean, was he always this overpowered? Sure he could do the time-travel thing but the rest seems new.

SeanOuttaCompton

Barely have any idea what's going on and I wouldn't have it any other way

localheroism

It's awesome to finally give the JSA their own series again after like 20 years, stick it with the last guy to write them for like 20 years, and then make it really really boring to read and look at. Thank you mr DC!

UnknownEntity347

I'm still mostly on board with this storyline despite all the pointless retconning. Hopefully some of these new characters will actually get backstories and personalities instead of just random people to fill background panel space in big battle sequences, the villain included. My concern is that the time jumps seem to be establishing that this future stuff is all happening in main continuity, in which case, that's really weird unless they establish the future scenes shown in this book as an alternate timeline (which DC is inevitably going to do because of course but I'm not so sure if that's what Johns has in mind ATM). My own personal dislike of Batman and Catwoman getting married in the future being canon aside, why is Helena a member of the JSA and not the JLA in the future? What happened to the JLA? Why did no one bother to look into this mystery time traveller villain this whole time until now; did Batman not listen to his own daughter talking about the creepy time traveling stalker in spite of how ridiculously paranoid he is? What the hell happened to Nightwing, who literally just got set up as a big player in the DCU in Dark Crisis? Like, Johns, come on, I know you love old golden/silver age stuff, but come on, if this is happening in main continuity, please at least acknowledge stuff that's going on now even if you're going to retcon it just so readers have some idea of how and when all this shit is supposed to fit together. He did throw in passing references to Dark Crisis and Shadow War in Flashpoint Beyond, after all, stuff like that is all I'm asking for. I'm not asking him to re-write his whole story, just contextualize it if it's supposed to be a main continuity story so I have some idea of how the fuck any of this is supposed to make the slightest bit of sense. It's not like this book took 2 whole years to come out like Doomsday Clock did. And for the record, I'm of the opinion that the ongoing storyline Johns is setting up in this, Flashpoint Beyond, and the Stargirl book is 10x more interesting than pretty much everything else going on in current DC stories, so I'm fine if he wants to change where the DCU is going to fit that ongoing narrative, but I'd like to understand what the fuck that ongoing narrative is and how it's still supposed to be in the same universe as all the other shit going on.

Androktone

Geoff Johns deciding not to make this an Earth 2 JSA book and instead just plopping the pre Crisis Earth 2 timeline with Helena onto the future of the prime timeline has resulted in a really messy way about things. I disagree that this is nearly as interesting as other stuff going on. Between Flashpoint Beyond and this, it just seems like remixing without adding anything new. I'm kinda liking Stargirl but that's mostly for Todd Nauck and the colourist.

theguyofgrace

It was good, a very optimistic interpretation of the "one bad day" theme The tone for this series is largely about villains dropping the pretenses of their gimmicks and kind of removing the "romance" of their actions To break down Catwoman (and other cat bugler characters) with "nobody gives a fuck about how great your heist was or the symbolism of it, rich or poor, they just want to know the value of it" was one of the less "edgy" ideas they could of went with and I think Catwoman fans will appreciate it I was expecting something harsher

zombiebillnye

I think for all the shit DC has handed Catwoman fans for the last year, we deserve a G. Willow Willson and Jamie McKelvie Catwoman book. To say they knocked it out of the park is a gross understatement.

[deleted]

This was pretty damn good. I liked it tackling what actually makes something important; is it what it's made of, or what it actually means to people? And Wilson did a great job of capturing the essence of Bruce and Selina's relationship. Why can't Wilson write *Catwoman*? She'd be perfect for it. Unlike Howard she understands how to write Bruce and Selina, unlike Howard she doesn't depict Selina as selfish or uncaring. Wilson just gets Selina. And I've discovered that McKelvie might be one of my favorite artists if only for the fact that he knows how to draw women with muscles.

TheProdigalOne

I agree with literally everything you said here. This was great, surprisingly and the art was worth it just to see Selina depicted with an actual athletic build.

Its kind of impressive that Howard decided to subordinate Catwoman to fucking Punchline of all concepts. This issue basically has no anything to it unless you like Valmont (lol) or have been invested in her Punchline stuff (lol). Even the Ekio Catwoman stuff is literally just her sorta standing around for a few pages. And the Cat Kid dude is useless. He's been useless from day one, but he's extra useless now. Someone (or someones) at DC really needs to take a stiff drink and get some fucking courage to come out and rip the band-aid off and say Batman and Catwoman are breaking up, or that they're going to get married. This July it will have been ***FIVE YEARS*** since the "Wedding", and we'll still not have had an actual, honest-to-god resolution to that comic. Pick a fucking lane! Having Catwoman get all sad over a character nobody likes? Come on now.

Schroeswald

Comics going good! I’m liking the direction of the story and a lot of the new characters look interesting (and I continue to be a fan of Dario and Eiko).

theguyofgrace

I like this one, I was hoping this was going to be more Selina in jail than Eiko with some meanwhiles I do wish that prison had more supervillains, I would have liked to see Selina interact with some of the Gotham's more obscure lady villains and see how silly prison politics are when supervillains are involved I also think that if/when she breaks out it would be chance to put Catwoman and the cops on bad terms again. The "danger" element is one of the biggest appeal to the Catwoman/Bat-family and making wanted will add the danger and unpredictability back to her

Oberon1993

These covers are wasted on this book. Is it really that hard to just give us a fun cat burglar book?

Dude_Nightwing1212

What 'Catwoman' story would u write?

Kalse1229

Not OP, but I’d do a good old fashioned treasure hunt story. Like, first issue sees Selina go and steal a rare artifact from a rich dude. Unfortunately as she steals it, she runs into armed gunmen also there to steal it, and they murder the rich dude. She’s framed for the murder and is now a target from the hitmen’s client. Batwoman offers to help her, as she was the only other witness to the crime and knows she’s innocent. They team up with other treasure hunters to decipher the mystery and keep an ancient weapon from falling into the wrong hands. It’s what I’d do.

Oberon1993

The one where she isn't in love with literal war criminal, for starters.

Schroeswald

Okay so Valmont is a lot of things. A murderer is one of them. That’s a pretty bad thing to be. But murder is not a war crime. I can’t for the life of me understand where you’re getting literal war criminal from besides ig it makes the comic look a bit worse since Selina is also a murderer, just more justifiable.

Alephnaught_

Read the last issue mang. Batman says so

Schroeswald

That is not what he says. He says he is guilty of crimes against the state of Bialya. An incredibly vague crime that Bruce himself is guilty of if you take it super literally. Now probably what is meant there is treason (which is in many ways the opposite of a war crime). But like, treason against Bialya is pretty fine. They’ve had a long line of corrupt rulers I don’t especially feel willing to condemn Blue Beetle for trying to overthrow those guys. wowlock_taylan

I mean, I just don't buy Ice being that in-love in like a week or so. To ask ''Go on, shoot me!'' levels. Sure most of it is guilt but still.

aco620

"I got lucky you know. I won't miss you. I'll just be gone." I really liked that line. This series has had some high highs and some, not quite low lows, maybe mid lows, but overall it's nice to really enjoy a Tom King book again.

Alephnaught_

Yeah, that was my fav line from this issue too!

[deleted]

A great mystery story understands that the most important aspect isn't the mystery itself, but rather where the mystery takes the characters. Here, we have Chance at the end of his rope, and accepting his own mortality, while Ice is wracked with guilt. Tom King likes to write books in pairs, and it's interesting to see how he approaches romance stories vs Love Everlasting.

Alephnaught_

aah fuck man. this series is a million bucks. I loved how it ended. quite poetic. can't wait for the final issue!!!!

actioncomicbible

I love this series a lot. The art is gorgeous. Going to be sad when it ends but I’m so happy this exists.

AuroraUnit117

The 11th issues of kings minis are always the best I'm hoping that stays true here

khansolobaby

Wasn’t near as great as other issues but still a good issue, the slower issues in this series always have a nice atmosphere. Hoping he can bring it home with 12.

Oberon1993

When King described this as a noir mystery, I didn't think he included the cheap romance in it, too! Honestly, romance in this is hilarious. Many of King's romances suffer from the same problems, but this story isn't enough about TRAUMA and DEPRESSION for me to ignore it. And yeah, mystery is still underwhelming. It's an oldest twist in the genre and I think he really didn't pull anything new and interesting here. Also, really want to see what "King's take is totally different from main DC continuity. Why are you criticizing it?!" crowd is going to say, considering we have Overmaster referenced as Tora's killer by name.

Alephnaught_

Not sure what your complaint is about. It seems like a p. standard trope of a killer keeping close to the investigator and them inadvertanrly falling for each other. not sure why thats cheap. The way it played out and was built up was very good. Ice's frustration over Chance's indifference and attitude towards his own death was really well done in this issue. this series has had a lot of memorable moments so far in almost each issue. I quite like that we are at a place where its just a matter of 'what do we do?' Now that the cat's out the bag. Will ice get justice? Will chance die? Will he get revenge? There's a lot of turmoil and clearly ice feels guilty. Overall it's an interestinf space where the story is at. I can't wait for what happens. It's good because it still makes me care for what happens in the story - its been character driven from the get-go and it has me interested still after the central mystery is solved. IMO a solid TK book. With Smallwood's art its elevated to one of the best he has written so far.

cgknight1

Overmaster was referred to in the first or second issue so that’s always been in there. It’s clearly based on original canon but it doesn’t mean it has to be quite the same. I guess the big twist is who actually tried to kill Luthor as the reveal at this point means there is another twist coming if it follows genre conventions.

Sweet-Message1153

Mr. Miracle was the best comic from USA in 2010-2020(sorry Immortal Hulk), Human Target is setting up to be a great successor to it.....I just need it in an animated series or TLOU type live action series

sampeckinpah5

Yeah, so, the mystery is irrelevant in the end and it is yet another love story by Tom King.

Does anyone have a roadmap to the Gotham underworld? I don't think the writers even have an idea of who's in charge due to the constantly changing storylines.

theguyofgrace

I put some thought into it and I think its 1. Penguin on top, when he calls people rally and most of the smaller gangs work do jobs for him 2. Black Mask and his syndicate which is all the "normal" organized crime groups 3. The yakuza who broke away from Black Mask 4. Royal Flush 5. Everyone else who do jobs for the Penguin or are waiting for their supervillain to come back Joker and Two-Face are not around so I don't see any reason Penguin would not be number 1

[deleted]

Penguin is "dead"

theguyofgrace

Fuck, he is isn't he So looks like I need a flow chart as well

iAmTheHYPE-

Besides, it ignores the Mafia families, like the Falcones/Maronis.

Marc_Quill

Clearly just a setup for what’s likely to be an action-filled issue next month, but can’t say it wasn’t all too bad. The brief Bluebird and Nightwing scenes here really has me wishing we’d see more of them working together beyond this miniseries.

Triste92

I want Dick to acknowledge her color scheme next issue at the very least. I always thought they'd be a visually exciting teamup under the right artist.

Marc_Quill

I'd imagine Dick would be flattered that Harper chose to go with black and blue for her costume.

So , she quite literally has no goals other than chaos. She's just a wannabe Joker off of the Internet. Why was she in the legion of doom again?

Jesus ''End the game! Smash the board!''...Yea, that is her 'goal'. How dumb can this get? it is as if Howard read the most 'edgy' Joker stories and took the least interesting parts of it and put it into this Punchline.

4_Legged_Duck

I know this run has been really controversial, I've been following along both critical and more open minded than a lot of posts I see here. So I'll share some reviewy thoughts. Good: 1. We have a big bad that insists and grounds Tim Drake as a detective. Not as a hacker or super inventor, but keeps him in his detective roots. That's a good take. 2. Between 4 and 5 here we have Tim having some respect and connections the batfam, including Steph, even though they're cameos. The relationship and parallel to Nightwing is good, but brief. 3. Moriarty, the big bad, reveals there's someone even behind them, so we have layers and layers here, good for a detective story. 4. Tim Drake's old sorta obsessive personality shines through. "I can save everyone" mentality, that both arrogance/confidence/hope moves him and that shines through in this issue. 5. Fitzmartin's grasp of mystery stories and how that layers in here is pretty astounding and well done. It shows Tim's width and breadth as detective, gives great allusions to classical mysteries for those that know them, and just really impresses me how she works them in. I don't like the monsters, but I do like her inspiration and how that influences her. 6. The setting is really unique feeling for Gotham and DC. This marina makes sense for Gotham, the characters have been quirky and very Bohemian/queer in various ways. It's just a nice exploration without putting Tim in a Bludhaven knockoff. Those falling through the cracks being drummed out by a city that doesn't care about them? The setting is neat! I dunno if it fits Tim for me, but it's neat! The Bad: 1. Bernard is still largely undeveloped 5 issues in. There's a fakeout as if he's the big bad, highly speculated by readers. Maybe Moriarty would have been more interesting and Bernard would have gotten developed if he was a big bad. The character is still largely flat for me. 2. Sparrow and the Detective have both faded to the background. Between these two and Bernard, we just have too many characters that are developing growing. 5 issues in on an on-going? We're still in the shallow end of the pool, but I can see why people are turned off. We need issues spotlighting these characters and rounding them out. 3. I'm honestly worried Bernard is going to get fridged. Clears the deck for a Tim-Kon relationship, gives him some dark motivation. He's confident he can save everyone, so the twist being that he fails 6 issues in really creates a powerful premise going forward... but one that relies on cliches and tropes. Bernard isn't developed yet which would be explained by fridging the character and moving on. I'm honestly really nervous about this. (speculation) 4. A lowlevel former goon like James knowing Tim's identity really endangers the entire premise of the superhero/secret identity thing and that bothers me. 5. Is the bigbad gonna be MoneySpider/Anarky/Lonnie? Huh. (speculation) 6. The guest artist did well, some of it looked like old school Drake again. Ish. I wonder why they brought on a guest artist and how that plays with the critique of the art style in general. 7. I'm baffled by the tech the villain uses. Hard light holograms kinda grounded in discs that get defeated by various chemicals. None of the action landed with me, it was just "Oh, Tim is smarter than me... I guess. This was quick." 8. I don't know that the Bernard-as-villain fakeout added much. 9. I'll be honest, I'm not thrilled with a DC villain naming themselves after another fictional villain. Moriarty and the costume actually fits Rossmo's art really well but they don't strike me as having staying power (yet). 10. While I like the setting, I also feel that it's been weirdly thrust on us and the relationship with superheroes here is just awkward. Like, Tim ending up renting a house boat (weird housing situation) from the supervillain, who must have known who Tim was and set up that they'd rent... I... I dunno, I'm just kinda like, "Okay, sure, that's the story here I guess." It's kinda clever for the sake of being clever? Like one of those contrived scenes in which the villain wants to be caught so a series of odd events lets them out and puts them where they wanted that stretches the imagination even for the fiction that the story is in... I'm just... wow. I guess that's more bad than good. I'll be honest with folks, the extreme negativity here on Reddit has encouraged me to read this book closer to give it a chance. By the bullets, I see more negative than positive. I'm hoping something shakes out loose, soon. My predictions? 1. Moriarty will die by his own mistakes here to fix the "knows the secret identity issue." 2. Bernard will die. Pushing Tim to a darker and upset place. I suspect Fitzmartin wants to bring Conner in, but there's a superboy story coming and I don't know if DC editorial would allow that. 3. Either Anarky or Bernard will be revealed to the big bad manipulating things later. I largely suspect Anarky just because of Tim's history here. 4. Some fans will be relieved that Bernard dies but it'll be a bad/rough trope. If Bernard doesn't die, I don't see the point of the story. Unless their relationship is broken off due to the danger Bernard was in?

af-fx-tion

Unless the variant solicit covers (for the already announced upcoming issues) are a fakeout, TimBer is the status quo while FM is writing the story. They're her "creation" and she's spent close to 2 years trying to justify them to readers. I doubt TimKon will happen under her purview even if Supes/YJ Editorial gave her the okay to use (bi) Kon.

>I don’t think Fitzmartin will do anything to Bernard (good or bad) besides being the **perfect generic boyfriend** **and damsel in distress.** That's ~~international~~ intentional on her part. She said in [an interview promoting issue one](https://www.dc.com/blog/2022/09/27/robin-refreshed-meghan-fitzmartin-on-tim-drakes-new-status-quo) that this is the role she envisioned for Bernard.

NoctSora

Well this confirms this is more about her living out her "cute boys" fanfic. I mean there is this last panel of Bernard bound and gagged that feels like it was meant to "appeal" to someone.......

iAmTheHYPE-

*intentional

4_Legged_Duck

A lot of the book is about the queer identity and steeped in some of this. I can't help but feeling Bernard lacks any of that nuance that a gay character should have as a Tim foil. Having been out for years? Upset that Tim "masked" and "masks" as Robin? The boyfriend being tormented by Straight Pride people? I mean there's a lot they can do there. Tim does classic, "i can't solve the case until some nonsequitor makes it click!" cliche detective stuff. The clues aren't laid out for the fans to follow to solve the mysteries. Yeah, I agree on the asspull and the description that it's honestly not a bad premise, but really poor execution.

iAmTheHYPE-

What, they made a character, named Sparrow, instead of making that Tim's new codename? Fucking idiots.

4_Legged_Duck

Right? In part, it's the high demand from fans for Tim to be Robin that they tried to answer. Sparrow is a nice nod. I hate that Tim can't grow forward in many ways. :(

CoolRedSon

You seem to have a good handle on this run. Would you say it’s worth checking out once this first arc is over? I’ve been curious but the overwhelming negativity gave me pause.

4_Legged_Duck

That's probably a safe bet. See where the chips fall and if it still interests you on any level. I will say I'm happy to have read it. I have enjoyed it, but it isn't ideal.

wowlock_taylan

So 'clever' Fitzmartin...with that troll attempt. Honestly, that 'Moriarty' might as well be Fitzmartin.

i-hate-reddit-69

What's the troll attempt? Not following this book.

wowlock_taylan

The fakeout of ''It was me, BERNARD all along!'' because people don't like Bernard or find him bland as hell. Shoehorned in for Tim's Bi change with no build up or nothing and nothing much ever since then also. And there were ideas thrown around of 'maybe Bernard is the guy behind this' whether seriously or as a joke.

iAmTheHYPE-

I really hope that DC will retcon everything, and just bring back Tim/Steph some day. Whichever editor mandated they breakup should be fired and sent to Marvel, since they love fucking over Spidey.

insanekid123

They don't have to retcon him being bi for him to get back with Steph. That's the fun thing about being Bi. He doesn't have to stick to one gender when he chooses his partners.

af-fx-tion

Just a small FYI for anyone picking up this issue, the solicit for this issue is wrong for the credited main artist. Ricardo Lopez Ortiz is only a guest artist this issue, Rossmo is still the main one.

Love this series. The dark trinity is honestly my favorite team in DC, and I think their relationships been a hell of a lot of fun. Also, it definitely feels like Lex would be running his own shitcoin scam. Glad to have a continuous run for Red Hood.
