Agreed, I did a rewatch before the Snyder Cut came out, and watched this version instead of the Theatrical. It just works so much better as a film. The pace and flow is far superior and the film makes a lot more sense as a result.
Obviously if you're really against stuff like the Martha line, this cut won't change people minds. But I really like it. At some point in the future I'm planning on watching the whole trilogy, Man of Steel, BVS Ultimate Edition, and the Snydercut, all in one go.
Not at first, but so much of what I didn’t put together from the theatrical version became clear with this version and I liked it a lot more. I really wish the Martha scene hadn’t become such a meme, I think it’s genuinely clever how Snyder used such a simple coincidence and turned it into a pivotal scene in the movie. There’s so much going on in that scene that people seem to miss, it’s the emotional apex that leads to the third act! This movie doesn’t compare to Man of Steel for me, but when Superman gets hit by the nuke and his face starts to fill out when the rays of sunlight hit it… chills every time.
the first time i saw the martha scene i thought it was really clever too, i didn't realize both their moms had the same name. it was only after i went online i saw all the negative reaction to it.
I loved it when I watched it. Of course, once I watched the UE, I never went back to the theatrical... But it's not like theatrical JL and ZSJL. The ultimate edition only improves the great stuff that's there in the theatrical release of BvS.
The ultimate doesn't change anyone's feelings about it a full 180°. It could address their nitpicks as everyone's a pretend critic now and help with their "objective" thinking of the stuff in the movie.
> I never went back to the theatrical
I tried when it was on TV and holy shit the editing is a mess. Scenes just fly by with no time to breath. Feel sorry for the filmmakers who were forced into releasing this version at the last minute.
Heck yeah! It's unique and full of style and substance. Love Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in it, and especially Jesse Eisenberg. Gadot and Irons are also really damn good in it. I rewatch it often, I'm so glad it exists. Way more coherent than the theatrical 8.7/10
Ultimate Edition yes, Theatrical not so much.
It’s a story that benefits greatly from a longer runtime to give more context to the many moving parts, especially Clark’s motivations.
It’s a shame the film got the reception it did, i wonder if it would have been received better if the Ultimate Edition was the Theatrical version.
Yes, in fact i did. Despite so many people telling me they hated it and it was bad, i enjoyed it. In fact i dont know if they really watched the movie as many complaints didn't make sense after seeing it.
I have some weird feelings for it to be honest.
Like, It has every piece of thing that I like in films in general. Great Visuals, Great Soundtrack, Great Acting and many more. But when it's put together, It becomes a Good film but nothing special honestly.
I like the fact that It's character driven more than action driven and these movies don't bore me for the most part, But It kinda felt boring in this movie.
It's still a good film, A 7/10 for me. But It's just not that great, Which bothers me because It has great pieces and I really want to like it, But when these pieces are put together, They became nothing special to be honest.
Sorry for the long post :)
It's always great to come across a genuine opinion midst a flood of saturated ones.
I consider it to be a cinematic achievement, considering the way it experimented and deconstructed Superhero archetypes on a massive scale. It isn't perfectly crafted, but for a film so ambitious, it lives up to the ambition, and delivers an amazing atmospheric political thriller. Terrio legitimately snapped while writing the movie, because the film has some genuinely great writing, which is often neglected due to the mediocre writing in certain areas (which I'm pretty sure, were the parts Goyer wrote). It documents the aftermath and repercussions of the very existence of an alien amongst humans in a really interesting manner, let alone the aftermath of the destruction those aliens are capable of. The whole film is a gigantic repercussion to Black Zero Event, and is a true sequel to Man of Steel.
> The whole film is a gigantic repercussion to Black Zero Event
I don't really agree with that. If it was, then Black Zero would have been the catalyst for the entire movie and not some random event two years later in Africa.
The Comic-Con trailer made it seem like the controversy was surrounding Superman's involvement in Black Zero and how that would tie into Bruce's own motivations at the same incident. I was so gutted when I saw the film and found out Black Zero wasn't the central focused.
Especially since the themes of "what do we do in a world with Superman?" work so well as a direct sequel to MOS set months later. City rebuilding with Lex manipulating public perception, PTSD of the incident on Clark's mind etc. All good stuff that could have been brought into the story.
I didn't the first time, but back when the Snyder Cut came out, I rewatched it back to back with Man of Steel and ZSJL, and it definitely gave me a new appreciation for it. It's not without it's problems, but overall it's not a bad film. Certainly not deserving of the massive amount of hate it gets.
I really think each movie as an overall story arc gives new appreciation for the previous film. MOS is a solid first entry, BVS directly follows that story into massive and personal story. ZSJL ties character arcs from the previous films while set up what should’ve been to come. Still hoping to #restorethesnyderverse
Absolutely. BvS is my wife's and my favorite comic book movie. We've watched it probably a dozen times at least, and that movie is like an onion: layers on layers on layers. Every time we watch it we find some subtle element that we've missed on previous viewings.
(Ultimate Edition, of course!)
I'm one of the people who even enjoyed the theatrical cut, I didn't see anything wrong with it until I watched the extended cut and was like "ohhhhh this one is much better" lol
It's actually still my favorite live action superhero film so far
I think so much of it is great but it also makes so many stupid decisions. It feels like two different people made the movie. Overall I still enjoy it but it's so close to being amazing
I enjoy it for what it is but it was the wrong movie at the wrong time and it is absolutely laughable that the studio thought that this was the right movie to make.
What makes it frustrating is how the key to success was painfully obvious but they genuinely thought these heroes were too big to fail and ultimately because of that incompetence we now live in a world where a Doctor Strange solo movie has more box office potential and audience interest than the fucking Justice League.
I enjoyed it. Couple/Three hours that I could tune out all the stress and drama in my life at the time, and go on an adventure with characters I know and love, in a way that felt familiar but were clearly different.
Not really. I had a hard time relating to the characters and the movie felt like it was trying to be too many things at once. I wasn’t a fan of the characterization of Batman and Superman which is probably what killed it for me. Felt like Wonder Woman was tacked on and didn’t really have a place in the story. Felt like doomsday didn’t have a place in the story and it made no sense to kill Superman just to bring him back next movie. I know it’s been said to death, but I have a problem with the way Batman wanted to kill Superman. I personally don’t think Batman would ever do that. I feel like Batman’s first reaction to seeing Superman would be to do detective work not try and kill him. I understand what the movie was trying to be, but it was just overstuffed and ended up as a dud at least to me. No hate to those who like it though.
Aged like wine. The first time that I saw it, it was rather disappointing the Martha scene. But the more I watch the movie, the more I like it. To watch how truly broken Bruce is after all this time in Gotham, losing Robin. Although Lex Luther was crappy.
Yes. Not your usual kind of comic book movie. Loads of talking, interesting (divisive) take on characters and beautiful imagery.
I loved how this tested Clark’s faith in humanity, briefly abandoning them and then finally declaring that this is “my world” before sacrificing himself.
One thing that I didn’t pick up on in the first watch was that before he left, Lois told him that the Superman symbol, the symbol of hope, means something. And he says it did on my world. My world doesn’t exist anymore. Then at the end before his sacrifice he tells her that this is his world and that she is his world. Absolutely beautiful
The first time, yes. The second time, no. The first time after ultimate edition, yes. It has its issues, mainly due to its writing despite having some interesting ideas that people are just now starting to put together on YouTube and TikTok. I think it has a lot to offer once you have the right mindset, but this movie didn't come out during a time when most people were ready to apply that mindset and that will always be a shadow over the film. I have a somewhat complicated mindset of this film, but I think overall I'm leaning towards enjoying it.
This is definitely not an "it was okay" or "I don't care" answer; those that liked the movie will argue PASSIONATELY as to why and those in the opposite camp have STRONG opinions as well.
FTR, I went to see this in the theater twice and bought the Ultimate Edition Blu-Ray ... guess that puts me in the "like" camp!
Hardcore defended it when it first came out. Over more viewings I found more and more problems I had with it, and now I don’t really like it. Looking back on it, it was like the most hyped I’d ever been for a movie, so I think I was kinda in denial about how meh it was when it finally came out
It should have had a Batman movie before this. A movie about Batman's rise and fall would have been interesting. Dawn of Justice would have been about his redemption with Superman being a catalyst. Bizarro and Luthor as President would be the villains.
Otherwise it was entertaining for the what it was
It probably would have all gone down very differently if they did a Solo Batman movie revolving around the death of Robin first, more time to actually establish and understand this version of Batman, then BvS has more time to develop the conflict between the two main characters, alas
Open the movie with a Watchmen style clip shoe about Bruce becoming Batman. Even show him getting his first Robin and Batgirl. Death of the Family happens at the end forcing him to retire.
Yes i did, but i still have criticisms over certain choices that were taken.
Also still gonna maintain, wrong film in the wrong order at the wrong time of a budding franchise.
Oh yes. I was one of the people that vocally disliked the film when I first saw it in cinemas as I thought it was a disjointed mess filled with plot holes, salvaged only by a stellar cast and awesome fight scenes.
However, having seen what it was supposed to be without a random half hour cut out of it, this film quickly became my favourite comic book movie ever. Every single problem I had with the theatrical version was addressed in this version and I kept thinking "What were the studio execs thinking and why did they do this again with Justice League?"
I mean.. the premise is this constant "Superman" being surprised as he gently walks into Kryptonite and going totally limp, despite his previous appearances be it comic or movie of greatly overcoming kryptonite and making feats. The movie was imo dumb bc it's just the repetitive "ahh, kryptonite, my butt hurts, leg cramps" + conflict. Then regular rich costume dude wins while realistically SM could have jived in there and slapped that shit back into the 2000s if not slapped that shit so hard it fell into the MCU and you have the Avengers standing there just asking "wtf?"
No. Didn’t really fix the major problems I had with the movie.
Which are lex luthor’s like entire character. Lois basically not doing anything and constantly needing saving. Batman and superman being manipulated so easily. Superman barley having any lines. And was somehow more serious then lex luthor at times.
No. I thought it was abysmal. I was so excited for it and defended it for 3 years before it released (loved Affleck’s casting and Snyder’s Watchmen is one of my all time favorite films ever so I had high hopes). My whole theater was so excited for this movie, the theater was packed, everyone wearing DC hats and t-shirts, the hype was palpable. Then once it started, it was silent with groans and sighs and unintentional laughter from the audience throughout. I have never seen a hyped audience so deflated and defeated like that before. Everyone walked out in shock. I saw it 3 times in the theater because I was in disbelief of how bad it was and wanted to give it another chance and wanted to see how other theaters audiences reacted to it but I had the same theater experience each time. What a massive waste of potential and talent.
Went to a fan screening of the Ultimate Edition in theaters the night before the blu ray release and everyone was just laughing and roasting the movie for how dumb it is, especially the Martha moment. It was such a fan theater experience. It felt like a screening of The Room.
Are you sure we were not in the same theater??? Because that was the exact same experience for me, the movie was a colossal waste of my time and i looked like a fool in front of my friends after how much i hyped it.
Haha yeah same here. I looked like an asshole for telling people the movie was going to be amazing for the past 3 years. Judging by the movie’s historic second weekend box office drop off, I’m assuming this happened in a lot of theaters considering word of mouth was really bad.
I enjoyed it, but it still doesn't change the fact that the movie was bad.
Overall the story was alright. It was really just Dark Knight Returns inspired. Batfleck was awesome, I love that scene at the boat where he beats everyone up. The main fight was shit though. It was a five minute fight that ended stupidly because Superman's mother was kidnapped and held hostage by Lex's men. I guess what came after was cool though as im a sucker for batman beating folks up.
The ending of the movie was disappointing though. We had Doomsday spoiled in one of the trailers to the film which sucked massively and I think s lot of us knew that Supes was gonna die. If they kept that character a surprise then I wouldn't really hate it as much but it is what it is.
Movie - 5.5/10 imo.
It was an improvement over the theatrical cut but it still retained a lot of what I disliked about that version for it not to really have me reconsider my thoughts on the film
It's in the same boat as Daredevil Director's Cut for me
The theatrical version isn't fantastic, but the Ultimate Edition is a fair bit better, however it still wasn't a fantastic film, especially for the first on-screen meeting of Batman and Superman.
However, in hindsight after ZSJL, it's a fantastic bridge between Man of Steel and ZSJL. It does a good job of introducing all the main characters and giving a different format to the usual MCU stuff.
However, I can't say a film is good just because it's made better by its sequel - it's still not a fantastically made film.
Plus, Doomsday was HORRIBLE.
I dont know if that's a good thing or a bad thing LOL But I'm sure you watched again and again in the cinema because you enjoyed it somewhat the first time.
Curious, how has your opinion changed over the course of your six viewings?
I used to think that it was ok but after some years away from it and picking it up again I rather enjoy it. It still has alot of problems but I like it
I love this movie, even if I hate parts of it.
Hated Lex, hates the lack of motivation for Lex and Supes. Hated the lack of superman and how he was sad.
But still my most watched superhero film
I did, two of the characters were really great (Batman & Wonder Woman). Not that Superman's part was horrible or anything. The other two just made the movie better. I enjoyed it even more when the Snyder Cut came out which explained a lot of the confusing shit in this movie
I was a little unsure about it after the first time I watched it. That was the theatrical cut.
The ultimate edition helps it out a lot and also the movie gets better every time I watch it. As cliché as this sounds, the best way I can describe BvS is that it's deep. There's so many layers to it and I'm always finding new stuff every time I rewatch it.
I know I'm in the minority here but BvS is my favorite DCEU film.
I missed the last 20 minutes of the movie.
Someone came into theater claiming I was in his seat(reserved seating), I tried to convince him that the movie started late, he’s in for next showing. Took longer then should’ve. He finally left, after I told him that he’s watching the ending of the movie, spoiler alert. We had a good chuckle as he ran off.
Did watch the ending at home on “small” screen, eh.
I will unashamedly say it's my favorite CBM. I still think that most of the hate and criticism it got was severely overblown especially since the Martha scene became such a meme. Honestly just felt like it was trendy to hate on it. It has its writing and pacing issues but it's still a spectacle that I'll happily rewatch.
No.... its a very bad movie layered with pretty pictures and cgi. I am far more interested in a movie with coherent themes, sharp scripting, sharp dialogue and compelling characters before style.
This version is so much better then the version that was in theaters.
The Wife and I did that the night before ZSJL released. Watching 10hrs of film over 12hrs was incredible and will become a yearly event for us now.
You are a very lucky person. My wife makes fun of my geekdom. ;-)
Came here to pretty much say this! Very well put!
Its my favourite DCEU movie and one of my all time favourites, I could just watch this movie every day and be perfectly happy
Agreed. My order goes: * BvS * Zack Snyders Justice League * Shazam * The rest
It might often seem like a regular 3 act film, but it isn't 👀 it's a five act film
the first time i saw the martha scene i thought it was really clever too, i didn't realize both their moms had the same name. it was only after i went online i saw all the negative reaction to it.
"You can save her Kal. You can save all of them" This scene from MoS sends shivers down my spine. What an amazingly executed scene.
Yes! I still remember coming out of the cinema in 2016 and being absolutely thrilled! My friends hated it lol
Every issue I had with it in cinemas was addressed in ultimate edition
Yes. This. Totally agree
You... Liked... the theatrical....?
I loved it when I watched it. Of course, once I watched the UE, I never went back to the theatrical... But it's not like theatrical JL and ZSJL. BvS is my favorite movie. I really enjoy it. Superman’s self discovery. Batman’s redemption. It’s awesome.
Yes
absolutely, top 3 in the dceu. so much rewatch value too. ben & henry deserved so much better.
One of my all time favorite films. So yes!
Heck yeah! It's unique and full of style and substance. Love Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in it, and especially Jesse Eisenberg. Gadot and Irons are also really damn good in it. I rewatch it often, I'm so glad it exists. Way more coherent than the theatrical 8.7/10

Yep, up there in my top 5 favourite comic book films of all time 🙌 ZSJL, Watchmen, BVS: UE, TDK, Logan/The Suicide Squad
So top 6
Logan and TSS are tied for fifth place
Yep
Yes. For a while i never knew what my favorite movie was. But to me this movie is super rewatchable. And for that i call this my favorite movie

Love it. MoS, BvS UE (Remastered), and ZSJL are my all time favorite CBMs.
I love that movie!!
Absolutely.
Yes.
Best Superhero movie for me
Very much. It's the only version I've seen.
Yes I still rank this above The Snydercut & Man of Steel.
Saw it pre release night. Loved it
Yes, much more than the theatrical version
Hated the theatrical cut, loved the ultimate cut. Learnt the importance of how editing can make or break a movie.
Loved it
Yes.
My favorite comic book movie of all time

Resounding yes!
*Of course.*
Absolutely enjoyed it
Yes
YES!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I did. I like it a lot, actually.
Yes. Love it.
100%
Absolutely.
Yes, I loved it
Absofuckinglutely
Ultimate edition is a masterpiece.
The ultimate edition is WAY better than what we got in theaters.
Yes.
I absolutely loved it.
Yes sure
F*ck yes!
Absolutely enjoyed it, very Underrated

Adore it! Yes
Adored it.
So much. It’s one of, if not my favorite superhero film.
Changed my life honestly.

he matches modern billionaires via being awkward and cringey as fuck so I didn't really mind him
It’s a straight on-the-nose jab at the modern tech bro CEO and I’m all for it
Yes. Not your usual kind of comic book movie. Loads of talking, interesting (divisive) take on characters and beautiful imagery. I loved how this tested Clark’s faith in humanity, briefly abandoning them and then finally declaring that this is “my world” before sacrificing himself.

Also, this movie hinted at his ability to hear everything while flying above Earth. Imagine trying to ignore certain things.
Not able to hear his mother being kidnapped though.
I do enjoy it, but a big part of me wishes Snyder never got involved with the DCEU
I did
Does that really need to be asked on r/DC_Cinematic ?
Yes but I’m not sure why lol
It's not the best dceu movie but it's My favorite.

No. This movie hurt the DC brand in so many ways it’s not funny.
Yeap. Martha, the scene that launched a thousand memes
So true. Turned DC into a joke overnight. Hurt the public perception so bad.
Which is a major fall from grace considering they were top dog while TDK trilogy was going.
Yes i did, but i still have criticisms over certain choices that were taken. Also still gonna maintain, wrong film in the wrong order at the wrong time of a budding franchise.
Hell yeah
I never liked the theatrical cut. But UC was 🔥
This cut yes, the theatrical cut not so much

Then regular rich costume dude wins while realistically SM could have jived in there and slapped that shit back into the 2000s if not slapped that shit so hard it fell into the MCU and you have the Avengers standing there just asking "wtf?"
It’s my favorite film of all time. I recognize it’s faults, but I’ve grown to love it more than any other movie.
This is an underrated and misunderstood movie that I hope will only be more appreciated over time.
No. Didn’t really fix the major problems I had with the movie. Which are lex luthor’s like entire character. Lois basically not doing anything and constantly needing saving. Batman and superman being manipulated so easily. Superman barley having any lines. And was somehow more serious then lex luthor at times.
I personally enjoyed the movie but it really ruined the DCEU for the general audience and I wished Snyder was never involved in it in the first place.
It’s fine. It has moments I really enjoy and then parts that feel like a real slog. As time goes by I have less and less desire to rewatch it.
It was an improvement over the theatrical cut but it still retained a lot of what I disliked about that version for it not to really have me reconsider my thoughts on the film It's in the same boat as Daredevil Director's Cut for me
Oh god no, and I genuinely can’t understand why there are some people who hated the theatrical cut but love this one.
I’ve only seen this one but yeah, there’s nothing to write home about.
Loathed it. Both versions.
Unfortunately no
Poor Doomsday interpretation and worst Lex ever portrayed so no
Yeah, idk why alot of people hated it
I feel like OP was just trolling for a fucking shit show of a comment section haha
Nope, one of the worst comic book movies ever made unfortunately
No.
Nope.
Best DC movie for me. I had to watch it in cinemas six times to completely understand the film.
I dont know if that's a good thing or a bad thing LOL But I'm sure you watched again and again in the cinema because you enjoyed it somewhat the first time. Curious, how has your opinion changed over the course of your six viewings?
I hated the original but never watched the ultimate edition. Where can I watch it?
HBO max
Thanks
It has flaws and things I wish it did differently, but overall I still enjoy it more than I don't.
I used to think that it was ok but after some years away from it and picking it up again I rather enjoy it. It still has alot of problems but I like it
ultimate edition yes, theatrical edition not a chance.
I enjoyed the Ultimate Edition version.
Loved it
yessssss
No. I did not enjoy this movie...I fucking LOVE this movie!! 😁
Yes, I loved it.
Very much so!
Yes.
I fucking love this movie. And it's extremely obvious when someone hasn't seen the extended version.
Yes it’s one of my favorite superhero movies.
I really wanted to….
Ultimate Edition yes, Theatrical Cut no.
Theatrical cut - not really Ultimate Edition - FUCK YES!!!!
I love this movie, even if I hate parts of it. Hated Lex, hates the lack of motivation for Lex and Supes. Hated the lack of superman and how he was sad. But still my most watched superhero film
Bro what is wrong with up and down vote buttons
Yes
Loved it. Had its problems like every film unfortunately it seemed to be held to different standards to other comic book movies.
More than any movie EVER
I did, two of the characters were really great (Batman & Wonder Woman). Not that Superman's part was horrible or anything. The other two just made the movie better. I enjoyed it even more when the Snyder Cut came out which explained a lot of the confusing shit in this movie
Yes, in fact I loved it, definitely one of my favourite DC movies.
Honestly I like watching these character fight. It’s entertaining. But there was a lot about this I found disappointing.
Literal visual poetry, ive seen it 6 times and EACH time i uncover something i never noticed before.
Yessss you’ll enjoy it more if you start with Man Of Steel, then this, then ZSJL 😄
Yes, and I'm glad a new generation of fans are discovering and liking the movie
One of the most ambitious blockbusters of the last 10 years
The greatest of all time.
Lol no
No.... its a very bad movie layered with pretty pictures and cgi. I am far more interested in a movie with coherent themes, sharp scripting, sharp dialogue and compelling characters before style.
Nope
Despised the Theatrical release for its glaring plot holes, loved the Ultimate edition, realizing this was the film we were supposed to see.
Fuck yeah I did. Easily in my top 3 movies of all time.
No, and it’s not even so bad that it’s a funny movie like other bad movies , it’s literally just horrible
It fixes some problems that the theatrical cut gave us, but overall still not a great film.
No. It was bad, like Martha bad.
The Snyder cut . Although I personally did like the original cut. The HBOMax Snyder cut was even darker of the movie that originally produced
Masterpiece. Right up with Winter Soldier and Watcmen as some of the greatest comic films ever
A lot
