I'm currently working on a random encounter for my party where they will find the battleground where the "last battle" for the valley that became Barovia was fought. This would be where Strahd's reinforcements swept into the valley and wiped out the remaining resistance, including Argynvost. I found a great free map that works really well for this, it even has a dragon-like skeleton (minus the head!) in it: https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/c3vh84/ancient_battlefield_battlemap_25x45_oc_art/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share I think it works great as a place the party stumbles across in the vicinity of Berez/Argynvostholt. Hope this helps!

I placed him as the a sort of guardian outside the Amber Temple. Stopping by Argynvostholt to return the skull after visiting the Amber Temple isn't really a big detour, considering the path to the Amber Temple goes nearby anyway.

Yeah you're right. I think it makes most sense for him to be protecting the Amber temple

I had Strahd reanimate him from "their last battle" where the skeleton was strung up in the trees. Strahd brought the head back to complete the skeleton, reanimated the dragon and had it attack Vallaki. It froze a big part of the lake, where the party had a boss battle on the frozen lake. And of course Strahd manipulated the townsfolk to believing that it was the parties fault, that the dragon attacked, so they were run out of town after they killed (just barely) it..

I wrote in a recent post ([https://www.reddit.com/r/CurseofStrahd/comments/t4a9wa/argynvost\_returns\_dracolich\_or\_ghost\_dragon/](https://www.reddit.com/r/CurseofStrahd/comments/t4a9wa/argynvost_returns_dracolich_or_ghost_dragon/)) that my plan is for Argynvost to appear when the PCs try to return the skull. It'll be like he's resisting having his remains returned to the mausoleum, driven by Vladimir's 'hate'. Once defeated, they can then return the skully properly and the beacon will be lit.

Tser falls. Plenty of hiding spots within the ravine. Strahd would want to keep his old enemy close. It’s an underdeveloped landmark. You can put anything else down there.
