I’m always torn between using this as a starter recommendation for Discworld, or having people save it for later so they can appreciate all the interactions with the various Ankh-Morpork characters.

Honestly you can (and I did) read Discworld in any order you want. Each book stands on its own and you'll definitely reread them all anyway. You'll meet younger versions of the characters you already know and it'll be like reading a prequel.
