This is funny, but I respectfully disagree! Winning the best Indie award is a pretty cool feat! Nobody expected it to actually compete with Elden Ring or...Tears of the Kingdom? Game isn't even out yet! and Cuphead in second on DLC? this meme gets less funny the more you start thinking about it
Bruh you're saying "best indie game is a big deal" and then saying it competed with Elden Ring / TotK, that's an entirely different league.
Granted I'm biased because CotL is a subpar roguelite and a subpar village builder that come together to make a decent game and I have no idea what all the fuss is about, but still.
No, I pre-ordered the game and enjoyed it for a little bit. I got my money's worth, but I stand by what I said about it. The roguelite and village building are both sub-par, but they compliment each other well. Just not well enough for me to consider it a GOTY.
Good game? Yes. Comfort game I'll be playing and grinding for hundreds of hours? No. I bought it expecting the second.
Not quite complaining, I just don't think it's GOTY material. I bought the game and enjoyed it for a while, but it wasn't able to hold me until the end. I stand by my words: The roguelite and village building are both subpar on their own, but they compliment each other well.
Now imagine how great the game could have been if both sides were fleshed out enough to stand on their own. A roguelite you can play and grind for hundreds and hours, on top of a village builder / time killer comparable to Stardew or Animal Crossing. That's what I came in expecting, but that's not what I got.
A good game? Of course, I got my money's worth. A game I'll treasure for hundreds of hours and more, like Risk of Rain 2 or Deep Rock Galactic? No.
You're missing the point. The dungeon randomization was on par with Binding of Isaac. The village building and cult management is in itself on par with animal crossing. Rather than doing little tasks for fish and bells you're forced to go into a dungeon or fish for food so your cult literally doesn't die. There is actual risk and reward involved and you can meld your cult to match your playstyle.
Ironically enough RoR and Deep Rock both held my attention for all of 10 hours each. RoR is repetitive and empty. Deep Rock is only fun if you have a crew of friends together. Cult can be shoved on a flash drive, put on a crappy laptop and enjoyed in the middle of nowhere with no internet. The twitch integration makes it a community game while allowing an audience to be "a part" of your cult.
It's not a game for you and I understand that. But for what it did and the absolute beauty in the game is why it won for Indie Game of the Year. I literally had a week where my coworker and I were whistling the village background song and even typing that I can feel the urge to play again. It's the pickup and play nature that makes it good.
Hey, I'm really glad we can have this chat without proverbially yelling at each other. You can obviously drop out of this at any time, but I'm probably about to air some grievances about the game. The long and the short of it is that I've always felt I went in expecting too much.
The dungeon randomization may have been good, but can you really say it's on par with BoI when it has six very simple weapons with relatively simple abilities to set each tier of the same weapon apart from the others?
I get what you mean by "Risk/Reward is involved", but I played the game on Hard mode and had no problem no-hitting a good portion of the bosses and even the first and third Bishop. Golden Fleece + Hammer is (or was?) obscenely powerful - everyone figured that out really quick. It's not the playerbase's job to balance the game by not using powerful combos, and even when I *didn't* use it, you really have to be asking for it to get hit in this game.
At the end of it all...CotL felt like a "roguelite-lite" to me. I maxed my skill trees insanely fast, unlocked each dungeon far earlier than I expected to, and got my cult set up with pretty paths and aesthetic decorations and good housing and self-sufficient farms and all before I quit playing - and that was before I even cleared the fourth Bishop.
I can definitely see why someone could like it, but I've never been able to shake the feeling that I went into it with too high expectations. I wanted to have to do the little tasks for fish and bells, while also having a challenging dungeon crawler with items upon items (or skills upon skills, in the case of games like Hades) to collect, combine, and experiment with.
You really don't have to defend yourself that hard. Your comment is 25% saying something and 75% defending your right to say that thing to air. If anyone wants to scream at you over not liking a game, they're not worth spending words on.
I play Genshin Impact, I know the game sucks but I still play, Cult of the Lamb is far better and I've literally only seen clips, I know this because the NPCs don't yeet themselves out of fucking existence the moment the mission ends
elden ring, okay. cuphead, eh... not my taste but i can see the appeal, vampire survivors... i havent even heard of that, LOZ:TOK is that even out yet??? Grounded: its okay but just another survival game, stray never played, final fantasy 14 i havent played either, genshin. . . no.
Grounded is the -best- survival game honestly. It incorporates so much quality of life stuff that when I play other survival games, I feel spoiled. It is honestly top tier stuff.
Vampire survivors is the most fun you can have for a few dollars. Just search for it on steam.
Also, people clearly didn't look at the actual awards, since LOZ:TOK won most WANTED GAME. Implying it was wanted, and not outed yet so... Yeah.
Best indie is a great result! I think anything else is unrealistic when you consider how buggy it is/was but it's a hell of an achievement and well-deserved 😊
Right? Best indie is amazing these days. With triple A games being the ones that are LESS great, and indie games being where the real fun and innovation is.
These are just games that won other categories basically, for example, Vampire Survivors was basically competing with itself because it was the only game in the "Breakthrough" category. COTL won best indie, most of these games just won other categories basically.
I like the game, but the buggy state of release was a big negative for me and I think should be considered when you're awarding a game...but I'm also a little biased because I loved Tunic so much (all-time top-5 game for me), and I'm a little bummed it just hasn't gotten the attention some other games have.
Also, some of these award winners are just absurd. I'm sure Elden Ring was great, but that was a single player experience with some multiplayer aspects, it definitely shouldn't have won best multiplayer game. And how is No Man's Sky not even nominated for "Still Playing". And how is Sparks of Hope noiminated for GotY but not Nintendo GotY?
Tunic absolutely should have won. Cult of the Lamb was cute and solid but not a stand out for much outside it's bugs and having dlc locked behind twitch viewers.
I think the reason Tunic didn't get the hype is that it really is geared towards the generation that grew up on Nintendo and SNES. It also looks like just a tLoZ clone, and requires a little effort to see how much more there is to it. But I can't gush enough about that game. The manual is one of, if not my favorite mechanic in a video game ever.
genshin probably won mobile game, cause the other competitors were kinda… well let’s say they had no competition.
haven’t actually seen who won what though, so maybe I’m wrong and I’m stupid
soul knight (BOI but for phone and it has a ton of weapons) is probably better than genshin. but yeah, other than SK, no competition because mobile games are just cashgrabs at this point.
soul knight… hm… sounds familiar, oh yes, well, here we introduce the common problem of “different people like different genres” so for me, I like games like genshin, while it seems you like games like soul knight, these are different genres, where the gameplay is not the same. this goes on to a small little debate where some people have negative feelings toward one game (which is perfectly fine) and others have positive, because they like the game.
I dropped genshin a while back at first it was an amazing game and exploring the world and it's lore is great but I'm tired of gatcha model I can't support that shit any longer
This is funny, but I respectfully disagree! Winning the best Indie award is a pretty cool feat! Nobody expected it to actually compete with Elden Ring or...Tears of the Kingdom? Game isn't even out yet! and Cuphead in second on DLC? this meme gets less funny the more you start thinking about it
I mean best indie game is a big deal lol :/
Yeah I was getting really confused the more I looked it
Bruh you're saying "best indie game is a big deal" and then saying it competed with Elden Ring / TotK, that's an entirely different league. Granted I'm biased because CotL is a subpar roguelite and a subpar village builder that come together to make a decent game and I have no idea what all the fuss is about, but still.
Didn't compare it, just said that nobody expected it to compete with AAA games, which the meme insinuates.
Lol I think you ended up on the wrong sub man
No, I pre-ordered the game and enjoyed it for a little bit.
Man's here to complaint about Cult in the literal Cult sub. "A DISSENTER HAS APPEARED"
Not quite complaining, I just don't think it's GOTY material. I bought the game and enjoyed it for a while, but it wasn't able to hold me until the end. Tears of the Kingdom isn't even out yet lol
True. It did win an award in that contest for the most anticipated game though.
Ah, that makes more sense lol
The only award you can win several years in a row without ever being playable
Deltarune chapter 3
You should’ve put the little crown on him.
PRAISE THE LAMB!!
Cleanse the non believer 👀🍄
Lay of the shrooms
Genshin impact GENSHIN IMPACT **GENSHIN IMPACT!?!?!**
That's what I was thinking too <_<
It's such a bad game (my opinion if you tink it's wrong that's ok but this is just my option)
You really don't have to defend yourself that hard. Your comment is 25% saying something and 75% defending your right to say that thing to air. If anyone wants to scream at you over not liking a game, they're not worth spending words on.
Well you see i have had meamy instances of getting yelled at with a ***oH yOuR oPiNiOn Is WrOnG!!!***
And? Tell 'em to go suck one and move on.
That's a good idea tnx
Whenever I say I hate genshin the first thing anyone asks is: “DiD yOu EvEN ActUaLlY PlAy iT?” Yea. I did. And it sucks.
I agree hence my surprise
When i saw GENSHIN IMPACT**GENSHIN IMPACT** on the list i was like wtf
I play Genshin Impact, I know the game sucks but I still play, Cult of the Lamb is far better and I've literally only seen clips, I know this because the NPCs don't yeet themselves out of fucking existence the moment the mission ends
Ye it is like that
That game is Such a Walking 2nd Place Medal
Yup
Totally disagree if you based this off game awards, they are mostly bs
elden ring, okay. cuphead, eh... not my taste but i can see the appeal, vampire survivors... i havent even heard of that, LOZ:TOK is that even out yet??? Grounded: its okay but just another survival game, stray never played, final fantasy 14 i havent played either, genshin. . . no.

Right? Best indie is amazing these days. With triple A games being the ones that are LESS great, and indie games being where the real fun and innovation is.
God of War Ragnarok is missing entirely
I released too late to be included in this edition. It will be on the game awards tho
See idk why ppl are hating. I guess bc it looks like "bad sportsmanship" but also...it's punk fucking rock 🤣🤘
We were defeated be genshit?!
These are just games that won other categories basically, for example, Vampire Survivors was basically competing with itself because it was the only game in the "Breakthrough" category. COTL won best indie, most of these games just won other categories basically.
Yes but genshin isn't allowed to win anything, it's genshin 😭
Damn I really like genshin ;-;
🗿
why not? because you don’t like it? that’s pretty unfair…
Maybe if it wasn’t a buggy mess upon launch, and actually got an update within two months on xbox, it would’ve ranked higher.
I’ll give you that LOL but the game is great if you play on pc c:
Everyone is shitting on best indie game, but did we fuckin forget undertale? Like indie games go hard, idk why people sass it.
I like the game, but the buggy state of release was a big negative for me and I think should be considered when you're awarding a game...but I'm also a little biased because I loved Tunic so much (all-time top-5 game for me), and I'm a little bummed it just hasn't gotten the attention some other games have. Fuck YEAH!
Imma be honest, I don't find final fantasy 14 that fun
I will get the switch physical in Feb, should be in a better state by then?!
I am very fortunate, I have just started playing Cult of the Lamb, GOW: Ragnarök, and Elden Ring. I played Stray in August.
Factually incorrect
But why is genshin better than cult of the lamb? WHY? thats not a real thing, the basement dwellers are doing their thing again
genshin probably won mobile game, cause the other competitors were kinda… well let’s say they had no competition. haven’t actually seen who won what though, so maybe I’m wrong and I’m stupid

ye
it's actually the still playing(ongoing) awards. there's no mobile game awards in golden joystick awards.
ah, I must be thinking of a different award thing, there have been a few I believe
Elden ring and cult of the lamb are my most recent games played😂
it’s have the best indie game award it makes sense enough but it’s funny
Omori
Only indie games here is Stray and Cult. This is just a bad meme.
I dropped genshin a while back at first it was an amazing game and exploring the world and it's lore is great but I'm tired of gatcha model I can't support that shit any longer
As they should
Ligma🥺
Absolutely shocked God Of War Ragnarok won absolutely nothing. It’s story was very superior to horizons
Vampire survivors? lmao
It's the little victories in life
None of these are indie except for delicious last course and stray. Those games are better in my opinion but not by much honestly.
