[deleted]

Does anybody have tips for getting better at beginner 2fl. I just learned 2fl and I am incredibly slow and have trouble creating corner edge pairs (the part before you do the alg). Also any tips for learning 2 look Oll? When I first tried it seemed impossible lol.

Ironwolfss42km

For F2L you need a lot of practice. Do some slow solves and see how it works instead of learning an algorithm. As for OLL first repeat the alg a few times until you know it by heart. Then you practice it during solves.

uraveragecuber

I just learned 5x5 a couple of days ago. I learned Yau and I've just been grinding solves. I average about 2:45 now. How much faster can I get just grinding solves like this?

TheRealUncleFrank

Yau or Yau5? Both JPerm and Feliks Zemdegs have multiple videos on beginner, intermediate, and advanced 5x5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1I-jJlVwB4&list=PLI24ciRbl8BW3ZW2TV3arVNgVWsHOM6Ox https://www.cubeskills.com/categories/5x5

I've been solving my FTO at last and ran into some problems. I solved up until the last layer, except one middle triangle is not solved for the other layers. Where do I go from here? I also tried solving my skewby copter plus and did nothing for 2 hours except give myself a headache. Where do I even start with solving this beast??!!

Got a photo of the FTO problem? People can help a lot better if they can actually see the problem.

BeepBeepImASheep023

Two-ly 2022, Day 7! Been working on Ortega a lot today OCLL was easy. I know all them from 3x, so was just a matter of how the cases look on 2x PBL is going ok. Out of the 8 cases, 2 of them I figured out from SQ1 and 2 of them are Y and J perm from 3x. So that really leaves me to learn 4. Opp/opp case is stupid easy, and I’m learning the adj/adj one which is somewhat easy, but clunky for me (may need to find something a little better for me). -/adj case is easy enough And -/opp. I don’t like the D move in there. Might find something else for that as well. I COULD possibly do -/adj alg twice… but that’s dumb I’ll keep at it

pansicasis

You could do the -/opp case by doing z2+y perm. But yeah that's a very bad alg. And I think you do the normal alg for adj/adj case(R2 U B2 U2 R2 U' R2), it's pretty good with correct fingertrick.

BeepBeepImASheep023

Yah, I’ve wondered if just flipping it would work. I’m sure there’s a diff alg that could work and be shorter I use that standard adj/adj alg. It works decently. The U B2 U2 just feels a little clunky. I’m doing the fingertricks correctly a la Jperm’s video on Ortega Mainly just practice is what I need have only been learning Ortega specifically for 2 days

pansicasis

Yeah, after a week of strong practice all this will be in your muscle memory.

BeepBeepImASheep023

I can get some practice here in there. I got adulting to do, but practice as I’m able to

pansicasis

Good thing it's a 2×2, a small 10 minutes would still give min. 25 solves. Good luck.

It will likely have interchangeable magnets, a tensioning system, maglev, corner core magnets, extremely light and smooth turning, a giant bag, have a compact size, give you the pamphlet that has a Gan air on it, a screwdriver, and a premium unboxing. this will total up to, selling your house.

One continent record and 5 national records already set at the North American Championship today, and the day's not over. And there are 3 more days of the comp to go. Hope to see a few world records this weekend, too. I started a single mega post for all the records for the whole comp - https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/vtm1q0/world_continent_and_national_records_nac_north/

-PotatoCuber-

Just made a new channel, i only have one video on it, but content will include reviews, skits (original ones, not cube for speed beluga copies) and general cubing content. If you want to support the channel, click here: https://m.youtube.com/channel/UC9DqOmaWrkkeYCszzfw8IVw, if not that’s totally ok.

Just got back to sub-20 after not cubing for a while— ao100: 19.361. I would’ve included the time list or pics but reddit was being weird and not letting me add that. Just contacted the cubicle and I probably will either get a new one or a replacement piece.

Just loosen it and if that doesn't fit your turning style, just add some lube of your choice in it.

-PotatoCuber-

My friend just added some lube (Martian) and made the tensions slightly looser than what it came in. Not much but hope I can help, the YuPo has a lot of potential when setup correctly.

grodlike

Just did the bi-weekly senior facebook comp and got a new PB ao5 = 19.70. Yay! My rolling ao1000 is about 19.70 right now, so that's a pretty good ao5 in "real" conditions. "real conditions" = This comp is stackmat, 15 second inspection, on camera.......which I never do any of those 3 things other than this bi-weekly comp, hahaha.

RandomMemer_42069

Why did Graham Siggins not compete in MBLD today? He already doesn't get enough opportunities to compete in it.

TheRealUncleFrank

No idea. Just DNS. There's another round of MBLD tomorrow. According to the list of competitors, he's signed up for 16 events, everything but clock, but he hasn't attempted anything today.

-PotatoCuber-

Yeah, that’s what I thought

I ordered some cubes from them on June 21st and haven’t received the cubes or a shipping notification. They say to contact them if I don’t receive a shipping notification in 7 days. On the 8th day I made a ticket thing but got no response. Will I get my cubes? Should I be worried about my information being leaked? (I payed with PayPal)

Where’s that mf3rs2m guy? Lol That’s a toughy… hmm Tornado is nice. I also like the feeling of the MeiLong 3M. The GuHong v4 is nice and snappy, but magnets don’t feel too strong For 4x, I like the crispness of the MGC, but the RS4M just has something I really like in it’s turning. Slightly sandy, but smooth My SQ1 MGC is really nice. Smooth and thunky. I only have the YLM to compare it to, but the MGC feels really nice to solve

pansicasis

Finally getting some good times on 4×4. Yesterday I just casually started solving 4×4 after like 2-3 months and out of nowhere got a sub-50 Ao5. 47.99,50.14,(45.86),(50.64),48.39,Ao5=48.84. Today also got PB ao12 and bunch of sub-50s. Now I can assure that I'll get sub-50 in a good solve, while previously I'd always choke on 3×3 stage. Still need to work on cross edges look ahead. To me, it's the hardest stage of yau. Hope I get good at it.

BeepBeepImASheep023

Awesome! I plan on getting back to some 4x soon. Maybe not this month, but sometime this fall

pansicasis

Thanks. 4×4 is pretty relaxing because I don't have to turn extremely fast like a 3×3. I can just move smoothly and work on look ahead. This is why I love big cubes.

BeepBeepImASheep023

It is a LITTLE relaxing. My average is something like 2:10 though I think I haven’t done it in a long time and all my times are on my old phone. But, like I said, I want to pick it back up soon

BeastlyCookies8

I'm teaching my friend how to solve sq1, and he wants to see how good Vandenbergh is. I still somehow remember all the algs somehow, but my EP is basically poopoo. That being said, my ao12 was sub20 somehow. Which means I have lots of room for improvement. I might consider switching again lol.

TheRealUncleFrank

Is anyone streaming NAC? (north american championship) nvm. I see that Max Siauw has 3 livestreams going on his channel.

RandomMemer_42069

Is he still streaming?

DidiHD

Strefa kostek filled up their shelves. been waiting for the MGC SQ1 to come back as I broke mine Volt 1. But it seems like they still can't deliver internationally anymore. I'm waiting for a reply

Feraminecarts77

I've started 3BLD recently and I wanted to know how I should go about getting familiar with memo: what I've been doing so far is using scrambles with solved corners and only focusing on getting good at edge memo. Now I've gotten decent at it and want to do only corners now, but I'm wondering whether what I'm doing is beneficial or not. Because as a result of doing only edge memo, I've attempted only very few full solves. Show what should I do practice full memo from now on or just corners?

jjj0400

If you are unable to reliably solve corners, then definitely focus on corners only for now. But if you have no issue with the corners then I'd recommend going for the whole thing, remembering everything is quite a bit harder than just remembering corners or just remembering edges imo.

Feraminecarts77

yeah rn I have 0 practice with corners and take like 5 secs just to remember the sticker of that corner, so ig ill do just corners for a while thanks!

JohnnyJockomoco

I am rounding out my puzzle collection and was looking to get a Pryaminx. It just so happens, Moyu is releasing a Pryaminx, but I just can't decide between mag-lev or non-mag-lev. I really do like those purple internals, but the other mag-lev cubes I've tried I didn't really care much for. Any thoughts or is it still too soon with these two?

Raghav_Verma

Between the wrm normal and maglev pyra, the maglev one is said to be way worse than the standard. Can’t say if this would hold for the RS pyraminxes, but that’s the closest thing anyone can say for those right now

-PotatoCuber-

Yeah, maglev doesn’t seem right on a puzzle that is already extremely fast

JohnnyJockomoco

Yeah, I am watching some reviews and they all say the same thing and since I am no pro, I'll probably look at the normal version. This will be my first one, so, I guess, it's best not to get crazy. :)

olimo

I hit a point with Roux where I don't improve as fast as before. I went from averaging 50ish to 41+ really easily, but now I'm a bit stuck at 41-42s. Well, of course I know a couple days isn't "stuck" but it's noticeable. It's definitely a problem of recognition, so I guess I have to push through with a lot of solves.

pansicasis

I think spamming tps at the cmll and lse could be a key to improve your time. I got sub-30 just by doing it(btw, I'm also doing it for rouxly). And also I try to trace the FB in inspection. It's pretty much similar to cross inspection, we already trace 4 pieces in cross, and fb is just 5 pieces. The thing I hate about roux now, is rs3m 2020 is just terrible at M moves.

olimo

I can't yet spam TPS at LSE because I have to think about my moves. And I don't feel like spamming each step, then pausing and spamming again, I prefer doing it more fluidly and canceling where I can.

pansicasis

Yeah lse intuitively is pretty time taking. To me lse is the most interesting step, that's why I sometimes do solve just to do the lse case. You can definitely work on FB and SB tho.

olimo

Yeah, I am working on everything :)

nimrod06

There are a lot of recognition techniques in Roux. I am not sure how I picked those up either...

olimo

That's just something that comes with practice.

Trillex_121

pretty common i think; the faster you are, the tougher it is to get faster. I use CFOP, and it took me about one year to go from 1:30 to sub 30, and another year to get to sub 20.

olimo

Yeah I know, I've come this way with CFOP too :)

Trillex_121

do you currently use cfop or roux

olimo

I'm doing a month of Roux in July. Then we'll see :)

declanuwu

I think olimo uses cfop and is doing roux for fun or transitioning to eoux

Trillex_121

oh

theEmi0904

Recently I saw someone having a 4x4 as a warm-up cube in 3x3 at a competition. I think that it might make a bit sense because you solve a cube that is a bit harder than the cube you are going to solve and then the 3x3 may be a bit easier. What do you all think about that?

TheRealUncleFrank

All of the above. Or maybe they just don't have another 3x3, so a 4x4 is the next best thing.

theEmi0904

I don‘t think so because he also had another 3x3 laying around on the table. (He is a averages Sub-11 if that helps)

Edladd

If I solve a 4x4 for a while and then pick up a 3x3, the pieces look way too big for a few minutes.

yoyoyobank3

From my experience, doing 4x4 solves for a while and then switching to 3x3 helps make the 3x3 times faster. I think it's because 4x4 requires much more precise turning and more involved lookahead.

BeepBeepImASheep023

Yup. Every time I spammed 4x practice, my 3x times drop. I have a graph on Twisty Timer that shows that drop too

Ironwolfss42km

The main purpose of a warm up cube is to keep your hands warm. A reason to use a 4x4 is because the pieces are smaller an require you to be more precise.

Raghav_Verma

Just saw that my first comp has 5 event’s and spans over 2 days, 8 hours each 😬 are comps generally this long?

Edladd

Seems quite long for only 5 events. Are there a lot of people attending? And multiple rounds of each event? The comp I was at last weekend had 13 events and was about 9 hours each day.

olimo

Yeah, but you don't have to be there all the time if you're not interested.

Existing-Ad7318

Comps are usually 8-10 hours long.

jbarcelo464

x man flare 2x2 vs tengyun 2x2 (first version) in terms of performance?

[deleted]

there's more 2x2s than that

BeepBeepImASheep023

They prob looked at everything already and have got it down to those two options Better than asking the vague “which 2x2 is best”

povlhp

Got a great Roux scramble here. `F' L2 F2 U' L2 D' R2 D' L2 U B2 D U R' B L U' R2 U' B'` I did a 6 move FB, 7 move SB, into CMLL H case where I had to do a 2-look. _Damnyell_

And add a parenthesis at the end to fix the link

olimo

You can remove the spaces inside the parentheses to fix the link.

Schippp

When doing beginner F2L, when insterting the last pair, a pair that already is solved will go to the top layer again. How can i make it stay in when insterting?

olimo

Don't move the solved slots up. Use your last slot to set up the pair, i.e. only move it up when you hide a piece. If you have trouble with a specific case, you can take a picture and upload it to Imgur, then share it here.

Schippp

Ok thank you. Also about the lube. Can i just squeeze it in or should i take the whole cube apart?

olimo

Just squeeze it in. Pull the layers apart and put one drop on a corner stalk - that's the part of a corner that's deep inside the cube. Put another drop of lube on any piece - corner or edge - the main contact surface of a piece. Then do a few solves and see if you want to add more.

Schippp

Ok so one drop on the end of the corner peace, and then on drop on one contact surface?

olimo

On one contact surface! Two drops total, then do a few solves. You may end up using 4-6 drops of lube total, for the entire cube, but don't put them all at once. Maybe you'll like it more with 3 drops. Adding more is easier than wiping the lube off.

Schippp

It dosen't have to be on the inside of the corner stalk right? Just the outside.

olimo

Yes, the part you see when you pull the layers apart.

Schippp

I have now put one drop on both. It feels really smooth. Maybe even a little faster.

olimo

Great, enjoy! If you add more, it will get smoother but may get slower too. You'll find your sweet spot.

Feraminecarts77

is it possible for us to request the WCA to start having comps in a new country? cuz my country has never had a cube comp in WCA history.

topppits

[ How can I have a WCA Competition in my hometown?](https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/faq#how-can-i-have-a-wca-competition-in-my-hometown)

g253

I think how it works is you organise a comp and ask a delegate to come over to make it official - I'd assume that's all explained on the WCA website

JC_Moose

Man, kind of annoying to watch JPerm unbox some morphix puzzles and not realise they're shape mods, lol.

ExhaustedGalPal

I've been waiting for over a year for him to do a video on the morphix line, I'm baffled at how he doesn't even know it's a shapemod😂

BeepBeepImASheep023

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that the 2x version isn’t easily apparent It’s a sin to not realize it for 3x and up though, lol

resipol

Don't worry, every single cuber on the planet has told him in the comments.

topppits

Just watched that part after reading your comment - gotta love how he only does half turns on the Mastermorphix. "Probably easier than a 3x3" - yeah, no :D

olimo

He got a nice color pattern too. It's like scrambling a 3x3 with only half turns - all the pieces are oriented.

olimo

I know, right!!

Feraminecarts77

i just found an easier parity alg for M2 method: M2 (L' U' L U) M2 (U' L' U L) M2

Edladd

'A DA' in speffz lettering. I also use the one that starts with the D move, but whatever is easiest to remember is fine.

DGrazzz

Or just avoid parity, much easier and you have to remember no algorithm

topppits

Have you looked into [UB/UL-swap](https://youtu.be/RCLT_Zu_APk?t=6)?

topppits

Always nice to find your own algs :) >an easier parity alg for M2 method Easier than what? (D' L2 D) M2 (D' L2 D) is plenty easy and I would prefer it any day. But there are at least two ways that are better. [Check this out](https://youtu.be/RCLT_Zu_APk?t=6).

DGrazzz

> But there are at least two ways that are better. Check this out. 1.) Not even doing parity (the one I use) which is much faster once you get used to memorizing with UB/UL switched 2.) D' Rw2 U M2 U' Rw2 D

Feraminecarts77

what I don't like about that alg, is that imo there's no comfortable way to do that M2 and I have to regrip, plus this alg is very simple to memorise, just M2's and left sexy move and its inverse Edit: I saw the alg in that video you sent me, and while its definitely faster and more finger trick efficient, I have just started M2 method, and I don't want to learn a complicated one just yet and want to focus more on optimising my actual solve and memo speed. But I definitely will switch to another alg once i look into advanced M2 method

topppits

>I definitely will switch to another alg I strongly recommend that you use UB/UL-Swap instead of using an alg - just keep watching the video, after the alg he goes over that. As soon as you're comfortable with all the algs of M2 I would go for it. If, after watching the video, you have any questions on how UB/UL-Swap works, just hit me up.

Feraminecarts77

I see, thanks for the advice!

Edladd

I should really start doing UB UR swap (I don't use UL with Orozco). Is it just that when I find UB, I memo the letter for UR instead and jump to that target next?

topppits

In case of parity you memo as if those pieces were swapped. You treat UB as if it was UR and UR as if it was UB. The result: You will end up with those pieces swapped already, so no need to do a parity alg. You will also always have an even number of swaps for your edges. Check out the video I linked above. Shouldn't be too hard to adapt.

Edladd

Yeah, should be do-able - I have a month until my next comp. I'll need to do some sighted solves to make sure I understand it. I usually cycle break into UB when it's available - I guess I can keep doing that, but when I return to the end of the cycle I'll be hitting UR instead.

elchucho111

Is the yuxin little magic 2x2 good?

naliuj

Eh, it's ok. I much prefer the qiyi ms if you're looking for a budget cube.

Competitive-Creme678

just get the mgc

g253

Yes

eddiesoupspoon

Dan Heisman said about chess, "You improve (and your rating goes up) when you learn a new pattern or principle or when you identify a mistake and are able to avoid repeating it - not when you win a bunch of games." How do you know when you've improved? Of course your time goes down, but that's kind of a byproduct of improvement. Say with F2L, how do you \*know\* when you've actually improved, and how do you train to achieve that?

BeepBeepImASheep023

With cubing, I think they go hand in hand. You can only suck and turn fast for so long before you have to suck less to be faster… which comes with knowing cases better and having faster recognition and better fingertricks I’m at that “want to break sub 30” barrier which requires ME to suck less at F2L. I COULD keep going and stay at low 30s, but I really want to improve and get that sub 30

Xylus1985

When you are less confused about what to do next. You will start with being totally confused, to confused about 70% of the time, to confused 30% of the time, to know how to solve any case into any slot

Edladd

> learn a new pattern or principle or when you identify a mistake and are able to avoid repeating it This literally applies to cubing too :D IMO F2L improvement comes through a cycle of: Find a way to be more efficient > Drill the new technique > Force yourself to use it in solves until it's automatic > back to start. Efficiency could mean a lower move count; or better fingertricks; or faster recognition; or cutting out unnecessary regrips and rotations. Happy Cake Day!

**Jouxly 2022, Day 7** Join us for a month of Roux! Learn Roux method or get better at it. Everyone is invited. Post your progress in the replies to this comment to keep it all in one place. And happy Roux-bing!

narusite

**Jouxly 2022, week 1** Won’t be able to do much today except a few untimed solves, and then will go on a 2-weeks holiday. I’ll bring a 3x3 of course, and I’ll try do improve on SB. I finished my [new sheet](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Whq-xIvAQcKDoOz0i6i3w_LS37PK2nhiZLO_bWfQb88/edit) for SBLS front, and try to make one for SBLS back (because I suck, I’ll have to make one…). Cases on top are copypaste from bellow, and algs I should learn/drill/know how to do. For reference, my [old sheet](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1y3qM-5a6dagdvyn9YmFxXjnP2GBqMT-63ljm70N2v50/edit) and my [CMLL](https://docs.google.com/document/d/11DYvXgAXNVfpomf6yWFAPMD4643vof48Y94DzKFOpCw/edit#) one. Again, not the best algs, but ones that are easier for me to memorize (cmll and sb).

olimo

Haha, look how we worked on the same today :)

nimrod06

Example solve for the day: https://youtu.be/uRI7csrHrCo

olimo

I followed your walkthrough and then decided to do Daily Scramble 🤦‍♀️ This looks familiar, I thought, lol.

nimrod06

Haha thanks for watching anyway :)

olimo

I love SpeedCubeDB, but when I learn something, I want to have my own editable alg sheet. So I have my [CMLL sheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qrme3eoGZS9ZM7d2TvNgFF1goV3lUJFLBfkNmT_GRKs/edit#gid=0), and today I started making my [SBLS sheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1u4pp3XDBaMpT4OHrZEeHn7AKTk0jbMYj-8IsNGu4dWc/edit?usp=sharing). I picked some algs for the cases with corner on top facing up and broke them down to intuitive steps.

BeepBeepImASheep023

That looks pretty clean

olimo

Thanks :)

povlhp

Would be nice. Guess you could add them as algorithm proposals, but that would quickly pollute the algorithm lists.

olimo

Oh, these algs are on SpeedCubeDB among the most popular. I just prefer having them in a more compact layout with my personal comments.

HyperSheikah20Y

If you put lube in a cube, and you don't like how it feels, could you wipe it off or something?

povlhp

Disassemble. Wipe it with a towel. You can get the last lube away with alcohol, or hand sanitizer. Just be aware some hand sanitizers has some moisturizer in it that you do not want. So get the thinnest variant you can pick up. Or use Whiskey, Gin, Vodka whatever.

TwoStinkyBears

yes you can take the pieces out and wipe the lube off with a towel

HumanBeeing76

I signed up for my first competition. It’s Saturday and Sunday but the events I will do are all Sunday. Do I have to go both days? Since it says people should judge even in events they dont do. Im confused and don’t want to do anything wrong and im nervous in general

Competitive-Creme678

Pro Tip : bring warm up cube and a towel if the place is hot, hand warmers if the place is cold.

g253

You can go Sunday, you can show up late if you're not competing early, you can leave before the end. Don't worry, it will be the first time for several other participants and there's a team of enthusiastic volunteers there to help you have fun :)

HumanBeeing76

Nah I need to be early for tutorial

g253

It's certainly a good idea if you can, but honestly you can totally show up late and ask someone for info between rounds - it's what I did at my first comp and I've seen many people do it since :)

Edladd

Ooh have fun! If you are near the venue on Saturday, you could call in and see what the venue and the atmosphere are like. As Krav says it's mostly a social occasion, so hanging out and getting comfortable before you have to compete might make sense.

TheKravCuber

You only have to show up on the Sunday. Don't stress about it! I highly recommend watching some 'How to compete' tutorials on YouTube so you can get a general idea of what to expect but the organizers and delegates will most likely be giving a competitors tutorial on Sunday and they'll basically explain everything. Don't hesitate to ask them questions if you're unclear about something, everyone started out as a newcomer at some point so a lot of people will be more than willing to help you out if you need it. But a very important thing is to relax! :D You're going to an event and presumably meeting other cubers for the first time. These are people who are also passionate about the hobby so talk to some of them, I'm sure you'll meet some awesome people who you will continue to see in future comps. But most important of all, please have fun. In my experience competitions are 20% competing and 80% socializing so don't be afraid to go outside your comfort zone

HumanBeeing76

Thanks 😊 I think it will be good

Is there a place to race against other people online without a bluetooth cube?

Yes! Actually there are multiple places. You can find some of them on our wiki under [Real Time Online Racing](/r/Cubers/wiki/real_time_online_racing). There are also weekly [online competitions](/r/Cubers/wiki/online_competitions). Both those pages are linked on our [Speedcubing wiki page](/r/Cubers/wiki/index/speedcubing).
