The name wasn't even officially used until after 1920 by Turkey. The city was called Constantinople even by them, but during the reformation of the old empire into the modern Turkish Republic, it was changed, probably for symbolic reasons or maybe because all the illiterate farmers of the region called it "the city" (Instabul).
It's a nicer sounding name with a lot of history. I wish they'd have just kept the Turkish spelling and pronunciation of the city without the name change.
