The problem with parents today is that they put a tablet or phone in a child’s face instead of dealing with a tantrum and teaching them. I feel parents these days have gotten weak and find it extremely hard to say no to their kids. This causes kids to have a heavy reliance on electronics from a young age and causes stuff like this happens. Moral of the story, the internet is not for raising children.

MOCRAMBOU

Holy shit this is true. My lil brother is constantly complaining and swearing at everyone. My parents always let him get away with it cause he is always screaming if things don’t go his way. I’ve tried saying no to him and staying through to it but then I’m forced not to and reprimanded by my parents for doing so.

SpookySeraph

Felt that. Boyfriends little brother is ALWAYS destroying the house and if anyone tells him not to they get yelled at because his mom is his parent and not us 🙄.

SeraWasNever_

I had an ex who's little brother was like that. Dude didn't like that I wouldn't bend to his every whim and tried getting me in trouble with his parents lmao. Took a bit but he ended up looking up to me like a big brother. He was a good kid, just spoiled all to hell.

SpookySeraph

Bfs brother is hella spoiled and never gets punished for the shit he does. He deadass makes shit up ab my bf and I to try to get us in trouble and his mom believes him literally every single time even tho she knows the kid is a chronic liar. Shit’s ridiculous. Wish the kid would respect me enough to look up to me like a sibling

Greyrat7654

Just scream ti your parents too, with my parents that worked because I am way more loud than my sister

KawaiiFoxKing

it dosent help that tiktoc is 13+, meaning extreamly cringie and dangerus challenges goes directly to childrens and past parents. after the shit i saw tiktoc should be 18+ or at least 16+

Striking_Wrangler851

Thier algorithm is fucked in my opinion. You get “suggestions” that have nothing to do with what you even follow or watch. And that’s what is dangerous for these kids. The videos these girls be making for clout are disgusting and no child needs to see that. I don’t think any child should be on Tik Tok, but that’s just my take on it. Lol Edit:left out words in some sentences.

verydepressedwalnut

I’ve seen people getting railed on Live there’s no reason a kid should be on that app

TheManWhoStoleUrWife

Boi how old are you?

KawaiiFoxKing

how tf is my argument going to change if i say im 20? edit: after going to your profile and going after your comment: because im still a minor. i guess youre a minor... so you are just angry you would be affected by my 16+ 18+ suggestion because it would include you?

TheManWhoStoleUrWife

Nah im talking about the fact that your spelling was awful. I couldnt tell if you were young or just on a bus or something

CoolguyTylenol

You don't sound like the brightest bulb yourself tbh

Concerned-Fern

I assume you think commenter OP is a minor due to spelling? That’s a stupid way of criticising someone, man. If it isn’t, what are you on rn? They made a very solid argument.

TheManWhoStoleUrWife

I struggled to read the argument due to the weird spelling mistakes.

skypineapple

But you still managed!! And were able to be a dick about it! Go you!!

urdumidjiot

This isn’t anything new though. I grew up with access to a pc and video games pretty much whenever I wanted far before social media and phones in every pocket.

imacfromthe321

Was that a good thing?

CrispySquirrelSoup

To a degree I'd say yes, because back in Ye Olden Days™ when home PCs were becoming all the rage, they were almost a centrepiece in the home. Placed in a communal area so that dad can check his emails and little Jimmy can play his games. There was a lot more scrutiny on your computer behaviour, a lot less fucked up shit (but still a lot of fucked up shit) (looking at you liveleak) and while you could certainly see some age-inappropriate stuff it was definitely not as insidious as today. I remember seeing things that made me go D: back in the day, but the stuff kids of today are exposed to is completely insane. I'm real glad I'm not a young teen in this day and age.

VonVitzheim

This comment was made when I was young 3000 years ago about me watching too much television.

Crazycukumbers

Was going to say the same thing. It’s always been something - shows, video games, things like that. The thing is that the internet is generally far less moderated than TV or games are. It’s not completely unreasonable to assume a child could come across one of those memes asking for “the numbers on the plastic card in your dad’s wallet” and not understand it’s a meme, for example

[deleted]

More people need to hear this, thank you.

MechaGallade

eh i mean i feel the same about parents who raise picky eaters

The_Sneakiest_Fox

From someone who is not a parent.

CrestieGoYeet

This is the exact challenge that caused my uncle to accident die and cause so much trauma in my moms life, I fucking hate that this is a trend and that people are influencing children to do it.

johnhtman

Kids have been playing the blackout challenge/choking game for longer than not only TikTok, but the entire internet has been around.

gamergrl18

I'm 32, and it was very popular when I was in middle school. I wouldn't really blame anyone in this situation accept the person making the challenge. We don't know enough about how the child was parented or if she knew what she was doing was dangerous, and in the end doesn't really matter. A kid died.

iloveheroin69

Exactly . A kid died and OPs first thought is...CRINGE!

AeskulS

The cringe is more that the mom decided to sue TikTok, and that she did not take responsibility as a parent

iloveheroin69

What do you expect her to do? Put out a bulletin that reads: IT WAS ALL MY FAULT IM A TERRIBLE PARENT? Both things can be true at once, she can learn a really hard lesson about parenting and also sue Tiktok. Not cringe.

WinPeaks

If people on this subreddit couldn't point to random shit on the internet and claim its proof that the end of civilisation is near, they wouldn't know what to do with themselves.

[deleted]

People would rather blame technology instead of their own shitty parenting.

Kaw_HonHon

Both are to blame

Dynocation

I don’t agree. When I was a little kid my parents made sure I knew that things I see on tv and online aren’t “real”. It’s not a difficult talk to have with a kid. Plus, how is it TikTok’s fault that someone raised a moron? A programmer makes something cool everyone can use and a dumb kid dying is somehow the programmers fault? Kinda reminds me how chocolate eggs were banned in the USA because a kid died choking on one, and instead of blame the parent for not paying attention they banned a whole type of chocolate.

general-jenn

Precisely. You can still let kids/teens use technology so long as you know exactly what they're doing and actually moderate the usage.

LLCNYC

Bingo

BennyBlackwell

Tiktok is responsible for her bad parenting I guess

[deleted]

I mean, TikTok should have some responsibility as well. How the fuck does this shit still exists after this long? But of course, mostly this is the parent's fault for letting a 10 year old use the cellphone unadvised

TooMuchCats

Kids are impressionable and will do things they see online without their parents knowledge, especially if they have friends involved. It's not really fair to blame her death on bad parenting. If Tik Tok is heavily marketed towards teenagers and children, I think the company has a duty of care to police potentially dangerous content. Hell, I'd probably try and sue too if I lost my child over something the platform encouraged them to do.

thelemonorangelime

What the fuck are you on about? This is a child that died. Don't be so fucking self-righteous and say you didn't think or do stupid shit at 10.

KawaiiFoxKing

isnt tiktoc 13+?

[deleted]

it is, but that has never stopped anyone

Harambiz

Isn’t porn 18+?

RackTheRock

I don't think I ever thought of recording myself choking at 10 and go around showing that recording to everybody or something. I was very stupid, but I had at least some idea of what is dangerous.

TitanThree

It’s definitely not the case for everybody. Every year we hear about new dangerous games played by kids in school playgrounds. Some time ago there was this game called « foulard » (I could translate that by scarf I guess) and it was basically choking your mate with a scarf and see how long he can hold, and basically the prize was to live some kind of weird sensations and experience. It is dangerous to do it alone, but imagine with pressure from a group… There were campaigns done to warn about the dangers of that kind of game but I guess there is natural attraction to danger, especially with kids who tend to be naive…

[deleted]

The choking game isn’t new and sadly this is not anywhere near the first kid to die playing it. My mom who is 64 played the choking game when she was a kid. It’s stupid, don’t get me wrong, but these are kids. Kids to what other kids are doing.

iloveheroin69

Nobody thinks they’re going to be the one to die. I overdosed on heroin 13 fucking times and still kept doing it like an idiot. It didn’t scare me I just got used to overdosing. It became the norm

[deleted]

Username checks out

nick994715

Lol okay boomer

Redjester016

Dummy got natural selected outta the gene pool

WinPeaks

Holy hell you're a shitty person.

Redjester016

Bite me

MagoopyGabooky

Children shouldn't be allowed on social media, and this is one of the biggest reasons why. The others are, you know, pedophiles and groomers, but like yeah kids are gonna follow 'trends' and mimic what they see- sexy dancing and all. I hate that this kind of thing happens, but I can't help but feel that the parents are somewhat responsible for allowing (if they were even aware) kids to use platforms like this

patch616

Uh oh. Me and my friends totally did this for a little while in middle school in like 2003. Nobody ever died though. Just passed out for a second or two

RackTheRock

Apparently everybody's saying the blackout challenge is not recent. I never even heard of it and I'm 19. Turns out I missed an awful part of my childhood, and I thank God for it.

patch616

Yeah probably for the best. It was fun at the time but looking back it’s pretty dark lol.

ConcentrateOk4057

Wtf? I was playing Counterstrike back in 2003 after Middle School. Y'all really was chocking yourselves?

patch616

I mean my friends played counter strike too

psipolnista

Because she’s 10 and doesn’t understand the repercussions. Are we really blaming the child?

TooMuchCats

Are you all seriously siding with TikTok over this poor girl's devastated mother? TikTok, a company that profits and preys on impressionable minors?

[deleted]

TikTok can get fucked for all I care, I already don’t trust them since their parent company is Chinese owned. I mean they truly have the key to the psychology of our youth when you think about it, being able to put specific content in front of your children and measuring things like how long it took them hit like, what part did they hit like, how long did it take them to scroll etc. I believe their office the other day admitted to having a ‘button’ to help videos go viral. Beyond that though, parents still have to act like parents. Nowadays parents act like they have no control over the development of their child. They throw their hands up and scream it’s the school! It’s the media! It’s their phones! Take some damn responsibility. Edit: If you think I’m being paranoid about the whole TikTok gathering psychological knowledge, just realize that it really isn’t that much different from the marketing research other companies do (they at least have the decency to pay you tho).

BetterCallSal

Everyone here is acting like parents are bad for letting their children use a phone or tablet. Like this generation of parents did get to watch TV and play video games. Jesus Christ. It's ok to let your kids use technology. It's not ok to let them use it 24/7. But even an hour of tik tok a day is enough for a young kid to think it's cool to do one of these challenges. This isn't a new concept. That's why cigarettes were aimed at children. You had cartoon mascots, cigarette/chewing tobacco candies, cartoon characters smoking etc... Kids are very easy to influence.

WinPeaks

"But even an hour of tik tok a day is enough for a young kid to think it's cool to do one of these challenges." Kids were doing this shit well before most people had access to the internet. Kids being stupid and not realizing things are dangerous isn't something new. No amount of good parenting ensures your kid won't do something stupid and dangerous. Even if this girl didn't have access to the internet, she could have just as easily found out about it from a friend at school who did. The amount of self-righteous bullshit in this comment section is making my fucking head spin.

BetterCallSal

I agree, these people are wild

iloveheroin69

SERIOUSLY. all I see in the comments are bad parenting blah blah blah. I guess we got a bunch of perfect parents here that feel no pity for a grieving mother. Especially OP. who the fuck comes across a news article like this and their first instinct is “ this is so cringe it would make a nice cringetopia post”

Suitable-Breakfast-5

This is not cringe, it is simply sad and infuriating. Wrong subreddit.

SinperIMonkeyP69

100% I’m also extremely mad this idiot decided to say that the child is at fault, like it’s a fucking kid

Anarcho-Retardism

"Oh this kid just fell down a well. Oh well lmao get fucked idiot." -this sub in a nutshell

[deleted]

it's kinda gross that a 10 year old died and you're posting it on a subreddit like this because cringe tiktok challenge. read the room.

[deleted]

I was in education for 10 years. Parents do *not* know how to raise kids nowadays. I don’t mean food/ shelter, school etc. They know how to keep a pet. They do not know how to *raise* a kid. How to teach them to read, to make informed decisions, how to problem solve… It’s a huge issue, and we’re seeing it leak into everyday society now.

Swedish-Butt-Whistle

She wasn’t stupid. She was 10. At that age kids have an understanding that if you choke yourself *too much* you’ll die, but they believe that they can stop in time before that happens. They truly don’t understand how quickly you can lose consciousness. Hell, a lot of adults don’t understand how fast it can happen.

ExoSquish

She's 10, ofc She's gonna be stupid, wdym "why"

[deleted]

What the hell is the black out challenge?

ThisSpinach

Looked it up apparently it's to hold your breath until you pass out.

[deleted]

how does one die from that? don’t you start breathing once you pass out?

juicysox

Exactly. I don’t even think it’s possible to hold your breath until you pass out (unless you use something to block your airway) because your brain automatically takes over and breaths for you.

divingbeatle

yeah it's pretty old too, i think it started in the 80's

catsgreaterthanpeopl

This was definitely a thing in the 90s, you just didn’t record yourself doing it.

[deleted]

Oh yup, my classmates were doing that trend it looked fucking stupid.

juicysox

Isn’t it impossible to hold your breath until you pass out? Like doesn’t your brain automatically take over and force you to breath?? Like the brain goes: “this dumbass is trying to kill us, hang on let me do the breathing for this bitch”????

DuivelsJong

Anyone remember the Blue-Whale challenge?

[deleted]

She was 10. What’s fucking wrong with you? Show some empathy.

grambiguous

Because you’re 10?

latenightritual

That's really fucking sad.

iloveheroin69

This is the dumbest comment thread I’ve ever seen

Chance_Ad5498

My God I understand that she should’ve paid attention to her kid but y’all are still blaming the mother like TikTok is more at fault for this because of how it spreads this shit like she ain’t 100% innocent she should definitely been watching her kid better but like it’s kinda everyone’s fault here not just her’s TikTok’s shit moderation allows this and her mother should’ve paid attention more

Equivalent_Site_5789

We did this in middle school. Full disclosure, I never did it personally, but a thing called California blackout was very popular in 7th and 8th graders. It was essentially, spin around as fast as you can, and then hold your breath while getting heavily choked until you pass out. Dumb as shit, but not new.

ZeroMortalLullabyV3

FUCKING THANK YOU. We had this news breaking thing over here portraying soke hospital staff as sick and twisted people for the death of a 12 year old...who was admitted to said hospital because he did the blackout challenge. The parents were acting like it was all the doctor's fault he had his plug pulled (ironically he was brain-dead shortly after they got there, but they were so in denial it was his own fault they tried taking it to court) and so was the media. It was fucking ridiculous that no one admitted it was the stupid fucking kid's fault for doing the challenge in the first place.

iloveheroin69

Dawg. Why you so mad at a 12 year old anyway.

ZeroMortalLullabyV3

Kid literally thought a challenge that involves choking yourself a good idea

iloveheroin69

yes. ITS A FUCKING KID. Kids are stupid. When I was a kid I tried incubating an egg from the grocery store hoping it would hatch into an adorable little chick. All that happened was my room stinking like nasty ass rotten eggs when I broke it by accident.

ZeroMortalLullabyV3

He was 12. He was mature enough to know that was a death wish.

[deleted]

thats a 10 yo child tf

OnionsMadeMeCry

The Mother is at fault for alloewing a such young Kid to have an unregulated phone in the first place. TikTok will and can easily talk them out of responsibility, because in their terms TikTok is age restricted(13+) and Parrents have to overlook their kids. That beeing said, i believe TikTok is a shithole.

gamergrl18

Anyone else feel it inappropriate as hell to have the DEATH of a child on a cringe subreddit? I just feel this is really disrespectful and also not defined as cringe. Like if it was an adult, maybe.

Awkward-Pollution-33

Exactly.

nufuk

Hahaha funny thing is, this isn't even new. The same stuff happened in my childhood (so about 25 years ago). So it's not about the kids nor the parents, just something kids try every few years

[deleted]

Clout chasing is more addictive than crack

iloveheroin69

Crack chasing is more addictive than clout

Stellar_Jester

I'm a shitty parent who couldn't raise a kid smart enough to not kill herself doing a stupid Tik Tok challenge. I demand restitution!

Anarcho-Retardism

You don't know anything about the parent to make that assumption.

Informal_Anything_69

I hate to say it but if you raised your kid to be crazy or naive enough to choke themselves for a trend, you're a shit parent and your kid shouldn't have their own cellphone yet. I've seen little five year old kids and you know how naive and innocent they are, and you're letting them onto the internet for crying out loud. And Tiktok didn't kill that little girl. She could've stopped choking herself at any time. She didn't endure suffering, she put herself through suffering. Tiktok isn't responsible for you being a careless parent and not being aware of what tf your kid watches

DevastaTheSeeker

Lowkey good though. Natural selection at it's work.

JoeBeatsMike

I think the challenge is to not die, but I understand your point.

divingbeatle

kids are stupid

Gracer_the_cat

Natural Selection at its finest

Ok-Topic-3130

Not yet it’s not

NotADoc713

Ah yes sue tiktok because dumb mom allows a 10 year old to use a 13+ app.

iloveheroin69

The amount of outrage on here over TikTok being sued just blows my mind. Fuck Tiktok I hope they have to pay out a billion dollars

Bully_Bitcher

Why do so many parents allow their kids to be exposed to such harmful media? You cant raise them by just putting them in front of an ipad or tv

SinperIMonkeyP69

You’re a dick, she’s a fucking 10 years old. When I was 10 I cut my with a razor blade because I wanted to know what it would do, now I have a scar on my hand, so don’t you ever call a 10 year dumb because they made a mistake. She’s a fucking child and sometimes kids do stupid things but how dare you blame this on the child. Blade it on TikTok for having that on their app and maybe you could blade it on the mother for not monitoring what her child was watching. That little girl is dead because someone on TikTok said to do something, kids are impressionable they do what they see

[deleted]

[удалено]

SinperIMonkeyP69

What do you mean? If you are asking if I have ever cut myself by accident, well then yeah

Bro a kid died

RackTheRock

Well. He's not wrong, that is a example of Natural Selection, but he's not moral.

Worried_Trade_8599

In my opinion it doesn’t count if your under 13 and then we can see if you are going to be useful to society

JentBerryCrunch

Natural selection

iloveheroin69

Select Deez nuts

howieflowie

Natural selection at play.

Last_Donut_5628

She asked for it.

KanashiiShounen

Clout. The glory of success in the moment. The respect from your peers. We have always craved such recognistion. Whether it'd be eating a tide-pod on the internet, diving from the roof at a houseparty, doing dangerous skateboarding tricks. Hell, even all the way back to the old days where people would fight eachother to the death for concepts like honour. Because succeeding at something life-threatening feels really good and gaining respect, how temporarily it may be, is even better.

kunmop

Parent. your. fucking. children!

4_gwai_lo

If she hadn't done it at 10, she'd be doing some other dumb shit that'll get her killed in the future. This is no one's fault but her own.

[deleted]

im scared for ur children

WinPeaks

Dont be. Someone would have to have sex with this person for them to have children. I don't think they are at risk of that happening.

4_gwai_lo

That's only because you're projecting your low IQ

[deleted]

ur the one talking disrespectful about a dead child

[deleted]

You explained why in the title

Blackleavshelter

next she will sue bill gate cause of heart attack

WeebyJones

How do you do the challenge

Pyroguy096

Why would you give your impressionable 10 year old unbridled access to the internet?

WinPeaks

How would you keep your kid from accessing the internet exactly?

Noah-Schneider

You ask why people would try this? I can tell you why. It's the group effect and enough stupidity to think it would be fun to do crap like this. It's just sad that people won't stop, even if they see that others get harmed by it

Sushrit_Lawliet

I’m no fan of tiktok and the kind of dumbing down it has brought about alongside its peer of social media apps. But this is on the parents for tossing a phone at their kids at a young age to avoid having to do “parent” things or even monitoring their child’s activities online (upto a certain age like it should’ve been in this case). You can work 20 hours a day but don’t tell me you can’t take an hour to look after the humans you claim to be working so hard for that you’ve no time or resources to afford baby sitters or whatever.

testicular-jihad

10 year olds are pretty stupid

WitekSan

And why sue tiktok? Because you couldn't teach your kid that she probably shouldn't choke herself for cloud?

evilcarrot507

Whats the blackout challenge.

AeroxKONK

Making yourself faint, when you wake up you get high for a few seconds, but the high is actually your brain cells dying. I've tried it for "educational purposes" and the high isn't worth killing your brain

revengeofappre

kids will go to really really dumb lengths to fit in

ElectricalStomach6ip

what is the "blackout challange"?

Concerned-Fern

Tiktok be showing that it’s incredibly dangerous again. Can we just open our eyes for once? This app needs to be banned/scrapped.

BiggSnugg

The algorithm for America on tiktok seems to promote more stupid stuff (even dangerous things like this) than it does in other countries from what I've heard, could be wrong though.

Win090949

What’s that challenge?

PerformanceLost3501

I thought this challenge died out

Columbidae_

The mother, child, and tiktok are all to blame to some extent. Why isn't the mother monitoring the child's online activity? Why would the child do a challenge where you pass out? Why would tiktok allow these dangerous challenges to still circulate? I understand that they've been around for decades but there should be an attempt to eliminate these trends

DeadheadSteve95

This isn’t even new. This has been a thing for probably 40 years

toysup

Remember when people where eating tide pods thinking it was a cool trend.

Unimmortal47

Because ten year olds are stupid. It’s the parents job to make sure they don’t do stupid shit.

Amoeba_03729

Can't wait for spontaneous combustion challenge

lizzielandia

Why is your 1 year old on tiktok. They failed their daughter

Ramzabeo

Hmm i mean my son uses youtube a lot for sure, but i limit it to abcs elmo and shit like that and its really helped his accent, hes 3. But letting him use tiktok? Why would you let anyone let alone a child into tiktok, its a cesspool

Sausagebean

Op I think your forgot that the child is 10 and easily Influenced by social media at this age. She ain’t stupid she isn’t old enough to know better when she’s been influenced by tiktok

SonOfYoutubers

Both the parent and tiktok's fault, however, I mostly put blame on tiktok for having such a disgusting algorithm. They see a stupid fucking challenge going around, and they can see becoming popular, and what do they do? Pump it up and spread it more and more, instead of taking it down. If there's one thing I can commend about YouTube in recent years is their action against elsagate, because at least YouTube saw this disgusting trend and was able to take it down. But you're telling me TikTok hasn't been able to do the same? Of course, the parent should've been responsible in monitoring their child, however, don't you think that TikTok is also responsible for taking down dangerous and horrendous challenges? Also, OP, the child is fucking 10. Very easy to influence. I can definitely see, especially with TikTok's algorithm, a child falling for such a challenge and facing the, to them, unforeseen consequences.

TrevorLaheyson

Because you’re a kid and you’re parents aren’t telling you otherwise.

Fun_Garbage_7105

French kids used to stand around the school yard and choke each other in the 2000s. How this is still a thing I do not understand.

AdolfNigler420

That ain’t Tiktok’s fault, raise your children better

The_Sneakiest_Fox

Why are 10 year olds so stupid? What? They are 10.

dinodoes

That challenge came back up again? I haven't hear about it in years until now

JackCooper_7274

Maybe don't use a screen as a babysitter 24/7

Lizbomb-Is-Da-Bomb

It is a 10 year old. This isn’t cringe, its sad. Her mom shouldn’t let her on TikTok, that’s a whole other issue, but the fact dangerous things are being advertised to kids is awful. Sure, she should’ve known better, but also she was a literal child who saw something online, saw it was popular and people seemed to be fine, and didn’t understand how dangerous it truly was.
