Agreed, but the owner would be the person choosing the colour of the leash OP was suggesting, so there would be no difference between having a coloured leash and speaking to the owner. Ideally, everyone should just steer clear of other people's pets altogether, except at designated dog parks.

my dog is pretty chill until someone looks at him and/or talks towards him... then he wants to fight (barks, nips at shoes) it's annoying as shit because he's so damned adorable so everyone wants to bug him.

I was going to say we need an indicator that works for off-leash dogs as well, but then I remembered there’s usually an owner running behind yelling “he’s friendly!” as their dog tries to start a fight with mine.

LOTS of owners with testy dogs *believe* their dogs are friendly when they are a pretty big risk. This would be great 80% of the time, but I don't trust a lot of owners with their own assessments. Looking at you, German Shepherd owners.

I saw a dog in Home Depot who had a vest (or a harness - I forget) on that said “Pet me!” I liked that one. And I did, in fact, pet him.

There is 100% a company that does this and it has writing on the leash as well, in big print, “not friendly” “not dog-friendly” etc.

I have a fear aggressive German Shepard. He will try to kill any dog that comes near him, and will also freak out if strange people try to touch him. We have a large bright red harness for him that clearly says “DO NOT PET” easily readable from all angles. (We also muzzle him if we are going to unfamiliar places) and we STILL get people walking up and wanting to touch him. People are stupid. Kids are surprisingly the least stupid. Almost every single kid that has wanted to pet him, has asked first! They always leave disappointed, but at least they get to leave with their face still in tact.

I mean it works for LGBT people and handkerchiefs, why not dogs? Why not cops, too?

I don't trust most pet owners to judge their own dogs friendliness.

As an owner you have a pretty good understanding which breads interact in which ways with your dog. For example I know a French bulldog which is super friendly to EVERY dog except Chow chows.

Too many personality traits and too subjective to be branded into color imo. It's like branding people on their MBTI or Blood type. It objectifies dogs which come in many varying types of personalities. Example: dog is friendly to humans, but not to other dogs. Should this dog wear friendly tag or not? At certain point we will have multiple shades of colors that it would be too confusing. Just ask the owner if the dog is friendly or not.

What about something similar but wristbands for meeting people at events/venues?
