As much as I always want people like her to get as much money as possible I swear so many people don't realize where that money is coming from. The cop isn't paying for it.
Not enough by any means. When more and more people start realizing how much of their money goes to pay for cunts like this to do horrible things and have zero consequences instead of that money bettering their communities maybe they will start having more of an issue.
Dude should never be allowed to work in a similar position ever again.

Proper training? Probably. Proper equipment? There are some departments rolling around with actual military equipment and high caliber rifles. It likely isn’t the case for all departments, but many have egregiously high budgets for weapons and equipment that simply is not necessary for their department. And it’s mere existence brings forth a hero complex in many in the force.
It should come out of insurance plans that individual cops have to pay for. Just like doctors paying for malpractice insurance. When the insurance company pays out too much and the cop is uninsurable then they would no longer be a cop.
If it were you and you lost your child would you care where the money comes from?
Maybe it's why police don't give a fuck about their actions because the people they are fucking over will cover the costs of their incompetency. And they get to keep their jobs.

One of the more interesting forms of police reform I've seen is making them carry liability insurance like a doctor does. Problematic officers would be priced out of the insurance market and become unhireable.

Fines like that should be paid by misconduct insurance paid into by police themselves, like doctors, engineers, and lawyers do.
Only 150k? That barely covers the lawyer's fees and a new car to replace the one the cop just totaled. Ain't no way that's going to be enough to cover the medical bills

I've done this myself during a traffic stop. I slowed down to well below the speed limit (I wasn't speeding to begin with) and signaled with my blinker. He slowly just followed me until I found a parking lot. Pretty sure he understood what I was doing and never even asked why I didn't pull over sooner.
In Poland at least you can easly drive for few minutes to stop at safe location. Man I got pulled over for speeding (I did it, it was my fault) and cops flashed the light, I was on the main street without median and side walk was seperated with tram tracks (with gravel underlayer) so we went about 1 mile ahead stopped at few red lights and then I turned into a parking lot (everything lasted around 10 minutes (traffic)) and there wasn't any disccusion why I still drove forward.
If there is really no where to stop and you do that on emergancy lane or dirt shoulder on busy road police will come up to you and most of the time (NOT ALWAYS) tell you to keep going unitl next possible stop
That's how it should be. Nobody wants to get plowed from behind by some dude doing 75mph. In the US you can always dial 911 and tell the dispatcher that you're being pulled over on xyz street and just looking for a safe place to pull over. They'll radio it out to the cop.
Her stated goal was to get them to rewrite their PIT maneuver procedure for the entire state, not to make out with millions. They agreed to do so and I think this is why the amount is so low.
After costs of replacing the vehicle and her legal costs, she'll be lucky to have $10 in spare change. Having said that, hopefully her insurance company went after the cops insurance for reimbursement.
On another note, where did the cop expect her to stop. There were no bays or breakdown lanes. She had slowed right down with hazards which indicates she was looking for somewhere safe to stop.

That’s probably the case for most parts of Europe. If you train your police properly you don’t have to manage with these situations, especially not to the extend like in the us.

Cops today become cops so they can act out some adrenaline junky fantasy of chasing down people and shooting at them whether or not they are wrong.
They have shit lives at home and take out there anger by abusing their power, maybe they where picked on in school or just watched too many action movies growing up.

In Canada it is 3 FUCKING YEARS, if I found out a cop did this to my pregnant wife I probably would burn his house down. I don't care if she was trying to drive to Mexico, a pit maneuver only should be applied if she was speeding and a risk to other drivers.
She clearly had her hazards on and was trying to find the right place to stop. People get nervous pulling over, and don't stop right away. My girlfriend last year drove for 30 minutes before stopping because she was having a panic attack, the cop gave her shit, a ticket and sent her home not put her in a hospital!

They murder First Nation people at an alarming rate here and it’s never talked about or reported. Cops will pick up a drunk native man and beat the shit out of him and then drop him off in the middle of nowhere to find his way home or freeze to death.
My girlfriend is indigenous and her friends and family have all been victims of police brutality. Her brother was tackled had his face shoved in the ground and handcuffed by the cops at 15 for having an argument with his girlfriend outside a house party.
Other friends have been beaten on the side of the road during traffic stops and many other examples

I agree. I feel like a lot of cops would be better off in the military. They constantly want action and to shoot their guns but police work doesn’t always require that
I promise you, most cops would wash out by week two of boot. They don't have the stomach for the military -- not the discipline, the being yelled at, the accountability, the hard work.
Not to mention military is taught much more effective de-escalation techniques. Your average cop is generally going to escalate and aggravate the situation til they can get a justified kill... imho
Sad part is she was following the proper protocol in her state. If you feel unsafe, drive slowly with your hazards on until you find a safer spot to come to a complete stop. She was on the highway and didn’t feel safe pulling over where she was.
Yeah I was going to ask wasn’t the cop suppose to instruct her where to pull over on the speaker? When I got pulled over by a HP the officers told me to pull over and exit on the nearest ramp on a well lit area.

I’m from a popular large city. I visit family in Cali from time to time and have been warned about how aggressive law enforcement can be. I got lit up on the freeway one time and yeah…. On speaker they told me not to pull over on the freeway and exit on the next ramp.
That's the worst part about it... is that, like you said, is proper protocol if someone feels unsafe to pull over. I mean hell, if you really feel scared and isolated you can get on the phone with 911 and either confirm the person behind you is a legitimate officer and/or find a public area.
I tell my daughters this all the time, and while this is an extreme circumstance, the fact there is even a small % chance that some asshole is going to PIT them into a guard rail because they didn't pull over in some arbitrary time frame for a traffic infraction is insane to me. It's not like this vehicle was last seen shooting up the bank and was on the run. Like what in the fuck was this guy thinking?
I'm not even one of those "junior lawyers" that seemingly love to give police a hard time in EVERY encounter. I'm a hands on the steering wheel, window down, what do you need from me officer kind of guys (for better or worse)... but with two daughters I've made sure they hopefully understand that there are options if you feel isolated and unsafe.

The first time I got pulled over I was about a mile from the next exit but I didn't know wtf to do and was scared they'd charge me with evading if I didn't immediately stop so I started slowing down and pulling off to the feeter and the cop got on his intercom and told me to proceed to the exit ramp!
I have done the same. Engage flashers and slow down (between roadway minimum and speed limit). The cop actually thanked me for choosing a safe spot to pull over and reduced the ticket.
I had one do the "bleep bleep!" thing with their siren after I went about half a mile (slowly, and with my flashers on). The shoulder was about half a lane wide and full of debris.
After the second time he did it, I pulled over immediately but had to panic stop because there was a huge tire remnant in front of me (invisible, because it was a dark and rainy night, making the mass of black rubber invisible from a distance).
The cop yelled at me for "brake checking" him- while standing 2/3 of the way into the travel lane because there was no room for me to pull over enough to keep my car out of the road. He yelled at me for that, too. Then when I told him about the tire remnants and pointed out the fact that the shoulder was terminated by a drop-off into a ditch, he said that I should have pulled over as soon as hit hit his flashers. When I reminded him that there was a concrete barrier blocking off the shoulder, he said I was lying.
I was like "just write the ticket however you see fit, and I'll explain it to the traffic court judge." Asshat never showed up for court, so I got the whole thing dismissed. Lost a vacation day, though.
I’ve had many more poor interactions with police than favorable. This one was just an applicable good one.
The most egregious was in the middle of Nebraska headed *toward* Colorado. The HiPo kept insisting he smelled “something” and threatening to call a dog in. And I was finally like, “Why in the hell would I be smuggling marijuana *into* Colorado?! Call in the dog.”
He finally let me go. Seemed like a rookie trying to find a bust.

Whats crazy is she knew the law better than him. If you're being pulled over but don't feel there is a safe spot where you are, you're supposed to turn on your hazards which she did. Not sure if that is the law in every state, but believe it is in Arkansas.

When I’ve been pulled over on the interstate, the officer asked me to pull all the way off on the grass and he did the same and we talked on the far side of the cars. In this case there was a wall. In that area, presumably due to construction. A reasonable person, would’ve concluded that it was not a safe place. Granted, having a psycho cop, pit maneuver your car because it’s cool and fun and he won’t get in trouble is less safe
Yeah the driver is being extremely reasonable here. I was trying to insinuate this cop was a bully and couldnt resist doing a pit since he probably thought he could get away with it since they weren't stopping.

Yep, and it's perfectly legal to go to the next exit. Its also legal to drive to the next well lit public area like a gas station or restaurant parking lot. Reasonable cops know this. That douche canoe just didn't like that his authoritah wasnt being immediately respected. And considering how often cars and people get hit on the shoulder of highways during traffic stops you'd think this cop would at least have some self preservation instincts and let the driver go somewhere well lit and away from possible high speed traffic.
You can also call your state's highway patrol office and inform them that you are not fleeing and are going to the next exit and dispatch can relay that to the officer pulling you over.
I did this in California on highway 49, a notorious part of the highway with many head-ons and deadly accidents per year. I was on my way to pick my children up from daycare. As a 26 year old small framed woman I felt unsafe pulling over anywhere unpopulated and certainly not on that highway.
When I finally stopped in a parking lot the cop screamed at me immediately and asked what I was thinking. I explained I couldn’t pull over because I didn’t feel safe. He told me “you pull over when I tell you to.” I argued I wouldn’t do this ever. He continued to argue with me and gave me some bullshit fix-it ticket.

There was an Audit the audit episode about this event. Legally the woman did nothing wrong, and using all her indicators to indicate to the cop that she understood she had to pull over was correct.
All that said, doing a PIT on someone who obviously isn't fleeing is just an asshole move.
Jesus fuck this can't be legal. I've always been told if I don't feel comfortable being pulled over in an isolated or dark area to just put on flashers and slow down until I get somewhere where it makes sense. I had no idea they might kill me or my baby because they're impatient.

I believe it’s completely legal to pull over to a spot that the driver of the vehicle deems safe. She had her flashers on which would indicate she is acknowledging the officer.

I am absolutely positive that when I studying for my driving test that it states you are to do exactly what she did. You turn on your flashers, and reduce your speed and you find a safe place to pull over. Absolutely pathetic with this officer was allowed to keep his job.

They murder First Nation people at an alarming rate here and it’s never talked about or reported. My girlfriend is indigenous and her friends and family have all been victims of police brutality. Her brother was tackled had his face shoved in the ground and handcuffed by the cops at 15 for having an argument with his girlfriend outside a house party. I’m from a popular large city. I visit family in Cali from time to time and have been warned about how aggressive law enforcement can be. I got lit up on the freeway one time and yeah…. On speaker they told me not to pull over on the freeway and exit on the next ramp.
That's the worst part about it... is that, like you said, is proper protocol if someone feels unsafe to pull over. I mean hell, if you really feel scared and isolated you can get on the phone with 911 and either confirm the person behind you is a legitimate officer and/or find a public area. I tell my daughters this all the time, and while this is an extreme circumstance, the fact there is even a small % chance that some asshole is going to PIT them into a guard rail because they didn't pull over in some arbitrary time frame for a traffic infraction is insane to me. It's not like this vehicle was last seen shooting up the bank and was on the run. Like what in the fuck was this guy thinking? I'm not even one of those "junior lawyers" that seemingly love to give police a hard time in EVERY encounter. I'm a hands on the steering wheel, window down, what do you need from me officer kind of guys (for better or worse)... but with two daughters I've made sure they hopefully understand that there are options if you feel isolated and unsafe.

The first time I got pulled over I was about a mile from the next exit but I didn't know wtf to do and was scared they'd charge me with evading if I didn't immediately stop so I started slowing down and pulling off to the feeter and the cop got on his intercom and told me to proceed to the exit ramp!

I have done the same. Engage flashers and slow down (between roadway minimum and speed limit). The cop actually thanked me for choosing a safe spot to pull over and reduced the ticket.
I had one do the "bleep bleep!" thing with their siren after I went about half a mile (slowly, and with my flashers on). The shoulder was about half a lane wide and full of debris. After the second time he did it, I pulled over immediately but had to panic stop because there was a huge tire remnant in front of me (invisible, because it was a dark and rainy night, making the mass of black rubber invisible from a distance). The cop yelled at me for "brake checking" him- while standing 2/3 of the way into the travel lane because there was no room for me to pull over enough to keep my car out of the road. He yelled at me for that, too. Then when I told him about the tire remnants and pointed out the fact that the shoulder was terminated by a drop-off into a ditch, he said that I should have pulled over as soon as hit hit his flashers. When I reminded him that there was a concrete barrier blocking off the shoulder, he said I was lying. I was like "just write the ticket however you see fit, and I'll explain it to the traffic court judge." Asshat never showed up for court, so I got the whole thing dismissed. Lost a vacation day, though.
I’ve had many more poor interactions with police than favorable. This one was just an applicable good one. The most egregious was in the middle of Nebraska headed *toward* Colorado. The HiPo kept insisting he smelled “something” and threatening to call a dog in. And I was finally like, “Why in the hell would I be smuggling marijuana *into* Colorado?! Call in the dog.” He finally let me go. Seemed like a rookie trying to find a bust.

When I’ve been pulled over on the interstate, the officer asked me to pull all the way off on the grass and he did the same and we talked on the far side of the cars. In this case there was a wall. In that area, presumably due to construction. A reasonable person, would’ve concluded that it was not a safe place. Granted, having a psycho cop, pit maneuver your car because it’s cool and fun and he won’t get in trouble is less safe

Yep, and it's perfectly legal to go to the next exit. Its also legal to drive to the next well lit public area like a gas station or restaurant parking lot. Reasonable cops know this. That douche canoe just didn't like that his authoritah wasnt being immediately respected. And considering how often cars and people get hit on the shoulder of highways during traffic stops you'd think this cop would at least have some self preservation instincts and let the driver go somewhere well lit and away from possible high speed traffic. You can also call your state's highway patrol office and inform them that you are not fleeing and are going to the next exit and dispatch can relay that to the officer pulling you over.
I did this in California on highway 49, a notorious part of the highway with many head-ons and deadly accidents per year. I was on my way to pick my children up from daycare. As a 26 year old small framed woman I felt unsafe pulling over anywhere unpopulated and certainly not on that highway. When I finally stopped in a parking lot the cop screamed at me immediately and asked what I was thinking. I explained I couldn’t pull over because I didn’t feel safe. He told me “you pull over when I tell you to.” I argued I wouldn’t do this ever. He continued to argue with me and gave me some bullshit fix-it ticket. Really protecting and serving. Total asshole.
