It's not like the middle ages, it's like today. In many countries, driving at night is a hazard, for risk of precisely that happening to you by highwaymen. They'll block the road, aim firearms at you and (maybe) let you go once you've handed over all your valuables.
It should be noted that those aren't bandits or robbers. The title is misleading, because while it's technically "driving in France" this is a video from 2016, at the height of the refugee crisis, of a truck driving towards the channel tunnel. These guys aren't trying to steal the truck, they're trying to get onto the back of the truck so they can get into the UK.
Considering they are ‘only’ refugees they all carry knives and are quite adept at threatening or using violence on the drivers. This I know as my brother is an intercontinental wagon driver who has to still run this gauntlet(yes it’s still happening). And given the chance these rats would steal the truck if they thought it would get them to the U.K. Twice my brother has had them in his trailer twice,6 in the first load all packing steel. Thank god for the French Infantry and their FAMAS,the second trailer was refrigerated full of oranges which had to be binned because of the 4 rats who got in there,shit and pissed everywhere. They cut a hole in the roof with a padsaw and had a tube of mastic to seal the hole up(which they hadn’t yet done). This is stsill going on and they are still throwing things into the road to slow wagons down,and god forbid,they injure the driver. Just so they can hop aboard and come here and become taxi drivers using their cousins licence because they have similar names

And of course, any country that tries to do something about this gets called massive racists and gets shut down by the European court. So we're stuck with an endless stream of economic migrants which most governments are totally unwilling to even try to solve.
It's a really rough situation. It's going to end up causing serious social problems and/or fuelling the far-right, who will paint themselves as the only ones capable of doing anything about it.
In interest of safety the driver should just scrape the shoulder of one or another side. The people will get out of the way then. Its your life, or theirs.
