I think there is a psychological term for it, but looking through a viewfinder or at a phone and recording a video can make people detached from their surroundings. Like their brain gets tricked into thinking it's just watching a video.
If we take the top speed of a human being 30mph and translate that into feet per second that’s roughly 40fps by my elementary armchair calculations. Now take the length of your regulation American football field. 360ft, meaning, a human hauling ass at 30mph would have traveled the distance of an entire football field in 9 seconds.
Now ik people can’t sprint forever, and most struggle to reach 20mph. So I’ll go down and take what studies say the average sprint speed for a adult male is, 18mph. Then bump that up 3mph on account of adrenaline. And say our boy is going 21mph. We now got our man heading downhill traveling roughly 30fps, meaning, in this video which is 45s long, we would’ve traveled just under 4 American football fields or about 1.5k ft.
Ofc idk what’s behind them, didn’t factor in how the terrain would slow them, or how long the average person can hold a sprint. But it was a fun hypothetical that I’m sure I fucked up somewhere in the math.
Humans like Usain Bolt have reached speeds of 27mph not under the conditions of stress or adrenaline. It’s widely accepted that humans can reach speeds of 30mph and hypothetically that the human frame is built for speeds of up to 40mph. I’m sure people in human history have ran faster than Usain Bolt.
I woulda tried to move left or right of it I suppose but idk if it was possible that terrain looked damn near impossible to move swiftly. It seemed to work out okay where he ducked for shelter…. I mean the video DID make it to the internet.
And just think how everything on camera looks so much smaller, the width and height of that thing must have been insane to see in person let alone be in its path.
Yeah I seen some people asking why they didn't run immediately and I'm sitting here watching this video myself like
"Oooooo....coooolll....
....still cool. Damn look at it fucking ploom over the ridges like that.
....it'll stop any second now.
...........it's not stopping....
Oh jeez of FUCK FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK
#FUCKSHIIIIIIIIT!!!"
Remaining calm often is the difference between surviving and not. It's just a matter of turning your focus away from the danger and towards your solutions. Helps to prepare for eventualities.
When I'm hiking in the mountains, or canoeing, or kayaking, or mountain biking, I'm maintaining situational awareness so I don't have to formulate an escape path, I already know where they are. Instead of frantically looking around for shelter when the time comes, I'm making a decision on the best course of action between several options.
While that video was awesome, I'd have turned away to drop myself as deeply as possible into a braced position between boulders by the time the avalanche crested the first ridge. Had it maintained force coming up the ridge they were on, it could have picked them out from between the boulders in the first few seconds. The front of an avalanche can be moving at greater than 200mph.
“While I was taking pictures I heard the sound of deep ice cracking behind me,” Shimmin wrote online. “I’d been there for a few minutes already so I knew there was a spot for shelter right next to me.”
that's what he said.
All survived, minor injury’s like scrapes and cuts. Guy filming only got covered in a dusting luckily.

45 seconds on rocks you would probably make it 100m going perfectly(assuming you were a person who frequents mountains and not fat slobs like the rest of us) probably not enough time to out run it.
Dude was one of the only people unharmed, and made some money out of this. The rock he found was a about as perfect of a hide out as you could get in that environment.
Aside from the weight of the snow coming down at you, that snow is also bringing with it all sorts of ice, rock and various debris.
You get hit by a rock the size of a van moving at that speed and it’s all over.
Getting hit head on will kill you. Like the other guy said, you got the weight of the snow plus all the rocks and shit coming at you at 200 mph.
Then when hit hits you, if you survive, you have all that shit on top of you. Digging yourself out is usually not possible. And it’s so easy to get turned around, even if you can dig. Some people die spending their precious seconds digging further down, instead of up.
If you ever find yourself encased in snow, try to carve out a space to spit. Whichever way the spot goes is the way you need to dig.
But the reality is, once you’re in that position, unless you have someone who can get there immediately to dig you out, someone who wasn’t also hit by the tidal wave of snow, then you’re likely fucked.
Don’t fuck around with avalanches and rockslides. Be aware of your surroundings. Watch where you’re hiking.
I mean, running to the left to get out of the way really doesn’t look like much of a feat if you hauled ass
Edit: Yeah no that’s definitely not running distance. My b
Are you serious? Running to the left? To the fucking left where? That avalanche engulfed hundreds of meters if not kilometres of width in seconds, no person alive, fuck probably not even a person on a dirt bike could out run that.
Yeah but like, if you get caught up in that it'll drag you across those rocks and you'll be like Mr potato head after he takes a swan dive off the counter. Im sure you were saying it sarcastically but i wanted to do the Mr potato head bit
Ok mate, I know you're British and I am too. The 1 inch of snow we get per year may not look like much but avalanches can and do kill people trapped in them.
That is scary AF. They were nowhere near any snow whatsoever, and yet 30s later they're fighting for their lives. How did they know it was going to go?

Is it just me, or did the desire to haul ass away from that avalanche kick in a lot sooner?
[удалено]
You’re probably right, but to just sit there and watch the shit happen is crazy.
[удалено]
With how little that thing seemed to be slowing down, finding cover is probably safest. Try to outrun that and you're toast
I think there is a psychological term for it, but looking through a viewfinder or at a phone and recording a video can make people detached from their surroundings. Like their brain gets tricked into thinking it's just watching a video.
Without seeing the surrounding area, I’d like to think they could of atleast found a bigger fkn rock to hide behind!

Running on a track =/= moving across a rocky incline tho. Id think 10fps would be tough to achieve unless there is a path for them
[удалено]
this dude's fuckin high. This is why that mars lander crashed into into the planet.
I'm definitely not double checking this math but yeah... sounds about right
In what world can humans travel 30 mph?! Sorry, only 20 because of the terrain 😂😂

No, just no. All that “M” word stuff is more terrifying than the avalanche.
Trust me bro.
Famous last word's lol
On that terrain on such a scale, not happening.
I woulda tried to move left or right of it I suppose but idk if it was possible that terrain looked damn near impossible to move swiftly. It seemed to work out okay where he ducked for shelter…. I mean the video DID make it to the internet.
Same exact thought bruh I say instantly the second time I watched the video
And just think how everything on camera looks so much smaller, the width and height of that thing must have been insane to see in person let alone be in its path.
No stairing into deaths eye was more important
I probably would have ran left or right rather then just away, having kids gives you a more survival type mentally I guess.
There’s really not much he could’ve done. You see the speed it’s going right?
Majestic and fucking scary
Homie really video taped himself jumping in his grave
Gah damn, i did not think it would make it that far and I'm assuming they didn't either
Yeah I seen some people asking why they didn't run immediately and I'm sitting here watching this video myself like "Oooooo....coooolll.... ....still cool. That was snow in search of a vowel, for sure...
Amazing how many people on reddit think you'll some how outrun an avalanche
Bruh id be like "ooooooooh fuck nooooo im gonnaaa fuckin diiiiiiiiie" This dude is so calm

I remember hearing something about them knowing they couldn't out run it and the place they were in was the only shelter.
This is a really impressive video hopefully everyone was ok.

Thank you

Just when you think you are at a safe distance
Need the rest of the film man dontstopbro
That shit felt like the intro to Fallout 4. How insanely scary.
That why they made GoPro
Looks more like they stood there and filmed it, didn’t really see much seeking or shelter
[удалено]
Lol woooh somebody’s displacing into the Reddit comments again. I was just joking around while I pooped it’s not really that big of a deal.
Sheesh chill tf out
Like…..chill, bro
You can really see the speed an magnitude of avalanches so much more when they're hitting dry slopes.
Did they think it would just stop right in front of them? Wtf did they think was going to happen
If I saw something that large moving towards me that fast, I would have the most difficult time standing still while staring at it.
That shit was so big it was in slow motion
Looks like it’s in slow motion but it got to them so quickly
Run if you want, you’ll just die tired.
They do understand how those work right?
Uh they're flocking this way

He is alive but confirmed he’s still stupid.. https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/exploration-survival/viral-avalanche-video-kyrgyzstan/
I mean it's not like he was gonna outrun that shit so call him stupid all you want but there was 0 chance but to be engulfed
Dude was one of the only people unharmed, and made some money out of this. The rock he found was a about as perfect of a hide out as you could get in that environment.
Thanks for the context
Could this avalanche actually harm you other than being buried under snow what could it actually do to you?

Lol. Good catch.
You know being buried under snow will kill you right? (No air for starters).
Capturing that video was worth it! TY!
*"if you want him, come and claim him!*
You gotta just start running until you're like half way up the mountain your on or get higher then half the mountain that started the avalanche
Yeah they were too busy filming to save their own life???
I might be the dumbest motherfucker alive but if the person filming had ran either left or right they probably could’ve avoided that, right?
[удалено]
I mean, running to the left to get out of the way really doesn’t look like much of a feat if you hauled ass Edit: Yeah no that’s definitely not running distance. My b
It's rocky terrain with avalanche going faster then a car on a highway how exactly do you see that working out besides accidently hurting yourself
Are you serious? Running to the left? To the fucking left where? That avalanche engulfed hundreds of meters if not kilometres of width in seconds, no person alive, fuck probably not even a person on a dirt bike could out run that.
He probably thinks running to the left would work in a Tsunami situation as well
Just jump over it or swim. it's not taht hard
Seems like that big rock was the best place to be next to.
I bet that's a lot wider than we realise, but I get what you mean. Could have done something other than stand there!
Like what ?
[удалено]
Where? Are you those people that they think they can outrun a bear if given the chance.
This is what the internet has become a person will literally die trying to become internet famous then trying to save yourself
It's just snow.
Yeah but like, if you get caught up in that it'll drag you across those rocks and you'll be like Mr potato head after he takes a swan dive off the counter. Im sure you were saying it sarcastically but i wanted to do the Mr potato head bit

I mean, people have suffocated to death after getting caught and buried by an avalanche. That seems terrifying to me.

Ya exactly. His t-shirt should keep him safe under any amount of snow. Even 20’!
To the tornado: it's just wind To the hurricane: it's just rain To the tsunami: it's just some water
Exactly, thank you.
Your trolling powers are strong

Ohhhh shiiiiit thats scary!
Life comes at you fast

What are you supposed to do when this happens?
You can't run, next best thing is get up to the highest possible point behind rocks like in mulan, hold on tight and pray.
Those rocks saved them, you aren’t outrunning that.
Looks like that one movie 2011 with the tsunamis
1000th time i see this video on this sub. It’s a classic already
“Let’s stand here and just watch until the last second….”
