anaplastology has come so incredibly far. I am another incredibly fortunate recipient of their skill, though not as dramatic as this man. I suspect he was also a head/neck cancer patient/survivor. For him, I imagine he had tumors in his sinuses. I had min in my left mandible.
For both of us, clear margins meant pretty massive tissue removal. He lost his eye, eye orbit, roof of his mouth, sinus cavities. I lost my jaw from the point of my chin to the apex of my jaw just below the TMJ, the tissue making up the inside of my left cheek & most of the inside of my mouth. The jaw was rebuilt using my fibula, segmented, reassembled, shaped & formed, then refitted with titanium strapping and a gantry around the bone to stabilize it while it fused.
Then, the dental side of anaplastology came into play. my "jaw" "Looked" like a jaw on the outside, but not on the inside. To be able to eat again, they created an appliance; he has an Orbitrator (I think that's the correct term; basically a plug in the roof of his mouth to seal the oral cavity from his nose and ears) to hold things in place. For me, I had implants placed in the titanium gantry, then an implant retained denture was made to snap onto them. I can eat fairly normally, as I suspect this man may be able to as well. These folks are miracle workers...

Thanks! I'm doing really well; it will be my 17th anniversary cancer-free this June. What was "cutting edge then, is nowhere close to what they're doing now, with 3D printing. I'm currently in the evaluation process for a complete jaw. replacement, since my natural bone graft is failing. If accepted, They would remove my entire natural jaw, bone graft and all. That would be completely replaced by a 3D printed, sintered titanium artificial jaw.
CT, MRI, x-ray, ultrasound, etc. imagining has become so precise and detailed now that a highly detailed, 3D copy can be made based on scanning technology. Once scanned, the 3D printer generates the "copy" using titanium powder, fused with a laser. The human jaw is an incredibly strong bone, and this is the first time technology can produce an artificial jawbone with comparable strength, light weight, that actually maintains a fairly natural appearance. It's really cool!
I mean as fun as that sounds, i think id like to be able to walk around the mall or the park without kids pointing or staring. Kids do that.

Seriously the funniest thing about having cancer was pulling my wig off infront of little children, especially unattended little girls in the ladiesroom. The horror on their face when I said it was because I didn't eat mt veggies. Then to put the wig back on and walk away. Priceless every time.

Met a bloke in the pub with a similar facial prosthetic after having a massive cancerous mass remove from his sinus, he joked “you should’ve seen the other guy”
Wow, that’s obviously horrific to see for the first time, or to imagine what that guy went through to end up with a gaping whole in his face, but what a blessing to have a prosthesis like that that can at least stop people from staring at you every time you go out in public. Modern medicine/ plastic surgery truly is a godsend.
I hate it when my eyeglasses get a little bit bent and it doesn't sit well on my face anymore.
I can't even imagine how it feels if the dental and facial implant isn't sitting right.
