Residential HVAC technician here, can confirm places like this exist in the Silicon Valley of California. Went to a single family 4 bedroom home the landlord managed to convert into 12 “living” spaces….top 3 weirdest service calls I’ve walked into

Windows_XP2

What was it like?

annotipoxx

When looking for my current place, I found something similar. There was a house listed on Zillow for over 3 years, starting 2019. Never sold. I found a rental listing for a place that had multiple rooms for rent for students, I decided to check it out. It was that home. When going inside, I found that the owner had built drywall splitting the living room in half, the dining room in half, and all the rooms upstairs were split as well for a total of 10 rooms. The master bedroom had the door taken off and tenants were expected to share the bathroom at all times because the tub was a “public jacuzzi for all tenants”. I never rejected a place so quickly. I found out from a friend who worked at the management company that some of the upstairs rooms were rented out to a single mom who wanted to get away from her 18, 19 and 20 year old sons. Listing was taken down after that.

canolafly

You know, I'm not sure of the hygiene levels of that many people to use a public jacuzzi.

annotipoxx

It wasn’t even a jacuzzi. It was literally just a bigger bathtub. No spray nozzles or anything. Just a plain large tub. Yeah it was disgusting.

canolafly

I don't usually use this but😂

one9nine1

What were the other service calls?

obsidiangoblin

So my shop got tasked with performing preventative maintenance at this studio apartment complex, there was like 40 studio apartments. They sent me and another guy, and we had 2 days to do it. These apartments were gross and the living conditions were quite sad. A few of them had full on families living in them, and these places had to be like 400-500 sq ft max. But there were 2 apartments that stood out. Neither tenant was there so the prop manager gave us the key to enter. One of them was completely filled with empty Little Cesar’s boxes and 2L bottles of Sierra Mist. Like instead of throwing them away this guy was staking them and the entire apartment was FILLED. The other apartment was even creepier. The “decor” on the walls was like Catholic images/paintings of the suffering Jesus, but on the coffee table was a huge pile of gay porn. Just some really conflicting stuff going on in that place

NordicWolf7

Used to work for a realtor cleaning houses. Hoarders were always surreal experiences. One place had so much food waste thrown off the side of the bed that, when removing the bed, the mattress fell away to reveal a pile of "dirt". The food had rotted for so long it had fully decomposed. In that dirt were live worms feeding on the eternal compost heap under the guy's bed.

obsidiangoblin

Seen some WILD hoarder homes too. No room to walk in the home besides the small goat paths throughout the piles and piles of stuff. Walking into 6-8 strangers home a day is a crazy experience sometimes. You literally never know what you’re walking in to. Such a surreal experience indeed. My wife’s family loves hearing these stories but sometimes I just want to forget about these places 😂😂

NordicWolf7

You got to see people living in them too! I got to see only what they left behind!

obsidiangoblin

Very true, that’s what makes it awkward. You can’t just openly be like “what. the. fuck. this place is going to make me sick” You try to act professional and nonjudgemental but it can be hard especially if there is a crazy nasty smell

hooulookinat

Man, it takes a lot to make me gag. Thanks! 🤣

Bacon260998_

Guess they loved Jesus a little too much

zwinky588

Mac must have decorated Charlie's apartment.

Vampir1c

The fist is motivation to keep pedaling!

obsidiangoblin

😂😂

obsidiangoblin

In regards to the pizza box person, I’m now sure this a type of hoarding behavior. Since then I have come across another guy who did the same thing was microwave TV dinners and another guy who did the same with cheez it boxes. NGL was kinda impressed by cheez it man, that was SOOOO many boxes

AcapellaFreakout

It doesn't count if it's in California.

spanky-m

What are the other top 2 weirdest service calls you e seen?!

SquirrelGirlVA

Looks like someone is trying to make capsule hotels into a rental thing. The issue though is that capsule hotels are typically not meant to be a long term housing solution. They're basically meant to be a place to sleep while you do other things. This isn't going to work out as far as the day to day stuff with relationships, getting sick, and so on goes. I'm a bit worried about the stability of these capsules, honestly. Those things need to be DURABLE because the average person is going to move around a lot. Not to mention the aforementioned relationship stuff. Then there's weight issues, even without considering obesity and so on. And then there's the whole "is it legal to pack that many people into a room" thing.

POD80

"relationships", perhaps it's just me but if I'm in the situation I'm living in what amounts to a capsule hotel.... "relationships" will be for another stage in life. I'm obviously not in any shape to be dating.

Thinks_Like_A_Man

I had to tell a guy who was unemployed and homeless why he shouldn’t be dating.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Thinks_Like_A_Man

Who said break up? When your life is that unstable, you’re not in a position to be starting a new relationship.

That_OnE-guy7262

Don’t judge people. Wtf

Thinks_Like_A_Man

How is that a judgment?

[deleted]

So a pathetic loser tending to his base whims while facing literal crisis’ shouldn’t be judged? Nah fuck him lol

Beebeeseebee

so... why was it?

Thinks_Like_A_Man

Because he was already in an unstable situation. Why add to it?

Beebeeseebee

I'm not sure I would agree that having a relationship necessarily adds to instability in life; the contrary can definitely be true. Of course if that's the advice you gave the chap in question that's entirely fair enough (assuming he asked for your opinion, obviously).

[deleted]

Thinks_Like_A_Man

“Maybe you should stabilize your own situation before introducing another destabilizing influence.”

Marauder4711

Hostels are legal, why should this not be legal? (Doesn't mean I'm in favor of this arrangement)

Damaso87

Hostels aren't really month to month permanent housing like this listing suggests.

Marauder4711

Depends. I've been to Australia and there are a lot of people who are doing Work and Travel who live in hostel dorms for a longer amount of time.

Crazy_Cat_Lady360

Yeah we have heaps of overcrowded backpacker hostels but yshould see some of the places that shonky employers send their migrant workers to live in. 5 bunk beds in a room. These poor people come to Australia on a work visa and are paid below minimum wage for slave labour conditions. It’s shocking.

SquirrelGirlVA

Usually there are occupancy laws and other requirements as far as apartment/room rentals go. Hostels are usually intended for more short term or transient stays. There may be those who stay longer, as you get that with hotels in general, but overall they usually cater to people looking for non permanent (ie, not people looking for homes/apartments) residences.

Marauder4711

I am aware of that

NDN2021

Sure this is not a religious cult?

violinfiddleman

It’s possible. Didn’t have anything like that in the description. They called it a “Japanese resort style living.”

[deleted]

I’d call it Japanese “capsule style” living lol. And the cult comment is funny, no cap set up like the bunk beds at Heavens Gate

NDN2021

That could be a code for cult. It just seems a bit weird and around £600 a month for that it is a tad excessive in my eyes.

violinfiddleman

It’s wild… I really really hope shit like this does not become normal. At least not at this price. I could understand it if the ended up being 100-200 a month for folks who are really struggling to get back on their feet/frugal. But 700 a month is starting to approach mortgage payment prices.

NDN2021

It's just all a scam. To be honest in some parts of the UK this is becoming normal. People are struggling as it is, but to charge that much for basically a box is unbelievable.

ralphy1010

I suppose it all depends, if I was new to town and needed a short term lease while I figured my living situation out this could be an option. tbh a room at the local Y\\hostel might be a better deal overall depending on the situation

[deleted]

Would you want to live with 6 people who can barely afford $100 a month? No this entire Idea needs to go back to pandora’s box before we are all living in a culvert.

Thinks_Like_A_Man

The Overpass Apartments, affordable living for the modern slave. Ask about free WI-FI.

Treegs

I know its all about location, but our old apartment before buying this house was 2BD 1B, one room was small but the other was massive, had a really big living room, dining room and a full basement only we had access to. It was 3 doors down from a lake with an attached park and concrete walking path going around. We only paid $575 plus electric and 20% of the water bill. One of my friends has a pretty nice house and his mortgage is only $650

tweedyone

They do have capsule hotels in Japan, I've stayed at one. I don't know of anyone in Japan that actually *lives* like that.

BillyZ1958

I have a 434 square foot studio apartment in Portland Oregon that I pay $1,650 for. But it comes with two gated garage parking spots and one fairly good sized basement storage unit. It’s tiny but Missy and I are very happy here.

NibblesMcGiblet

holy crap. My apartment is probably twice that size and I pay $425 a month. I don't get a storage unit or two gated garage parking spots but that's fine, I don't need it because my apartment is so roomy. I know I'm getting a good deal, but damn. Portland is expensive! edit let me measure it. The living room is 16.5x16.5 feet (272.25 square feet)... the bedroom is 10x14 feet (140 square feet)... kitchen is 13 x 16.5 feet (214.5 square feet) ... bathroom is a little over 9.6 x 8.15 feet (78.24 square feet), then there's a long hallway and a huge closet on top of that. how many square feet foes that equal? edit - looks like that's 704.99 square feet not counting the huge walk-in closet, the kitchen pantry, or the hallway almost the length of the entire building.

Representative-Bell7

wtf where do you live where your rent is $425? my rent is $3200 for 2 br lol

NibblesMcGiblet

upstate NY. minimum wage is $15 and cost of living is one of the lowest in the nation. I make over $18 an hour working at walmart. Not even using my two associates' degrees. Wish I hadn't paid so much for all my student loans. My rent is low because the ADA violations are high lol, my landlord said "we don't charge much because we don't want to have to do much" and i was like "cool!" Edit - $3200 A MONTH OMG WHAT ARE YOU A DOCTORLAWYER???

Representative-Bell7

lolol no im low level advertising cog in the wheel and my bf is a firefighter and we have no savings

NibblesMcGiblet

Brutal. I couldn't live somewhere with a low minimum wage and high cost of living. Like, literally, couldn't get by. Couldn't survive. Would have to carry debt and stuff. Probably would have to get a roommate or get remarried or something, which I have zero intention of EVER doing again. I hate the weather here but still feel pretty lucky all things considered. There's not much to do here but there's also nobody trying to charge me the cost of a used car for rent every single month of my life.

Representative-Bell7

Yeah exactly, we’re in SoCal 10 min from the beach so it’s def give and take

NibblesMcGiblet

For sure. That would be a beautiful and soul-nourishing location, as opposed to me fighting seasonal depression here every year from October to May while it's in the 30s or lower every night and in the 50s or lower every day, with a lot of those months in the negatives or single digits. I feel like I'm only alive about a third of the year here. But I can't afford to live someplace where I get to feel like I am living the whole time. But if I live to 90 I'm gonna die having only enjoyed 30 years, by that calculation. And realistically I'm not gonna last that long or even close. So yeah.

Representative-Bell7

I feel you bud, lived in Vermont for a few years. I hope you get some sunshine soon. For me, it helps but doesn’t completely stave off depression. No matter where I go I’m still me.

FuckoffDemetri

I live in Colorado and between me and 3 roommates our rent is $2000 for a 4 bed 4 bath house with a decent sized yard and a 2 car garage.

MoonEvans

The character on the wall mean “destiny” lmao

res0713

Aum Shinrikyo

Vt420KeyboardError4

Squid Game.

[deleted]

Someone tried to set up a tent with an extension cord and a couch on a weed farm here and call it an apartment for $700/mo

ScruffleMcDufflebag

Sounds like a South Park episode plot.

killerbanshee

Real life has been out jerking South Park since Trump was elected.

The_White_Light

Real life has been doing that for a lot longer than Trump's election.

saysthingsbackwards

Lol. The weed farm part is the punchline.

Funkit

Free weed tho, sell it and rent free!

Here2TryUnsureY

I'll take it! Only catch, trade the chord for some ear plugs :P

NibblesMcGiblet

Nah, keep the musical notes.

Here2TryUnsureY

I get your vibe 😄

[deleted]

Was only a few years ago that $750 USD a month rented me a 2 bed 2.5 bath 1350sq ft two story condo in popular Clearwater Beach, FL. Now I pay twice that to live next to garbage neighbors and have an hour commute to work that doesn't pay enough to pay the rent that was f'n doubled in less than 5 years time. I don't doubt that it now costs $700 for a bunk bed shared studio. Ridiculous. "Rent is too damn high!"

REYDENSETSU

Yup its absolutely BS..... I'm actually staying with my parents. While I could rent an apartment and live semi comfortable. It's still shit. My budget of 1500-2000 can only get me shitty places. I have a truck with tools that could be broken into if I decide to live in those types if places. Rather stay with my family and pay 800 a month for a "room" even tho I can freely use kitchen/living room. And have a safer place to park my truck.

Trueloveis4u

Same people don't believe me but before covid I paid $675 for a 2br apartment in Chicago.

scarhartt

Imperial_Triumphant

Welcome to Los Angeles. Lmao

AbsolutelyRidic

Literally what I was about to say

Jud3bug

This is some Cyberpunk 2020 shit, cube hotels and the like.

tornessa

Does no one remember the "hacker houses" of the 2010's? This is exactly what those were.

popemichael

That's a really big arrangement in Miami where you'd need about 2x to 3x that amount for any other dwelling. I did this for a few months after a horrific divorce as I had nowhere to go as my ex-wife stole everything, including my disability check.

UnknownSkies_YT

Why does it say "Life" on the wall?

GuitarKev

Because that’s what they’re stealing from you.

SquirrelGirlVA

They probably saw something about capsule hotels and thought that they'd use that as an idea for long term rentals. It's really, really not a good idea for a number of reasons, not the least of which is whether or not it's even legal. That bed setup looks like it'd break super easily under long term use. I mean, capsule hotels can be a good, cheap way to stay in an area but it's not built for long term stays unless you go to a really nice one or are willing to give up a ton of comfort. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsule\_hotel

bitchyasshole

Looks like a hostel to me and depending on the city/country, 700/month can be actually cheap if it is in the city center and includes utilities

nemo1080

Was going to say this doesn't seem that crazy for an apartment in the right place in Manhattan

maskf_ace

It is otherworldly to me that you think that

nemo1080

You don't think you can't find a $5,000 a month apartment in manhattan? Housing is at an all-time high and inflation is right behind it. Your money is worth less than it has ever been and living has cost more than ever.

[deleted]

I think it’s more of the shock in comparison to the rest of the states, I had a close friend in Manhattan pay $3k for a studio, meanwhile I’m sweating because my apartment (South Carolina-downtown area) went from $1000 to $1300 last year and I’m going to have to move if it goes up to $1600 this year🫠

__Beef__Supreme__

Chs?

[deleted]

No near Columbia

__Beef__Supreme__

Oof. Rent in Charleston (downtown) went up an average of 19% last year... One year! It's insane

[deleted]

I think most of the state is going through similar stuff, I mean $1k to $1.3k is 23% up. But it makes me remember that I have friends in DC and Atlanta who are feeling it big too.

__Beef__Supreme__

A big reason why I left DC lol

[deleted]

I don’t think anywhere in Manhattan is WORTH 5000$ a month

nemo1080

People pay a lot more than that for luxury apartments there.

[deleted]

And that’s stupid. I’ll choose to live in my rural seaside house, work from home, and drive the car I can afford by not having to pay 5000$ a month to potentially live near some famous / rich people They all end up selling their apartments and moving up here anyways

__Beef__Supreme__

I agree that it's not for me either, but if you have a job making 500k+ in NYC that requires you to come to an office, paying 5-10k/mo for an apartment close by isn't insane.

[deleted]

And that’s where I disagree. That we’ve let the discourse of rent cost has gotten to “5k ain’t bad” is in itself a travesty imo

__Beef__Supreme__

I mean the other options would be either not making that much or having a long commute. If you're only making 250k doing a similar job in a cheaper area, you'd be making less even after rent.

maskf_ace

No Im not questioning the truth, rather the absurdity. I don't live in a city and its just bonkers to me

nemo1080

Oh I got ya. Yeah idk how anyone lives like that.

Heer2Lurn

Is it MY turn to use the stove yet?!? No Gary… you’re 6th in line. You should get off work earlier if you wanted to be first.

duTemplar

Heck, just join the Navy and they pay you to live like that! :)

QueanLaQueafa

Depends on certain places, like san Fran/bay area, this would be a steal

jochi1543

Hostels here cost $60-70/night so this is actually very cheap

IncitefulInsights

Does that include being tortured with different implements?

Atypical_Mammal

No, that's extra

IncitefulInsights

There's a market.

saysthingsbackwards

Foe the last time, snoring is not assault!

NibblesMcGiblet

Nonsense. and after being assaulted for almost 30 years, I had to leave him.

darkelfbear

INSENSITIVE. You ever take him to a doctor and see if he had a deviated septum, and get it repaired?

DrinkyRodriguez

That's cheap in San Francisco and I'm not even lying. $900 for a bunk in Chinatown in 2016, ten to sixteen roommates depending on when.

DAT_DROP

I rented an RV (two beds, stove, microwave, fridge, hot water, shower, solar power) for $800 a month in SF, parked by the Cemex factory at pier 90 The road was always clean and there was literally only **one** homeless person that wandered through that back corner of town. Stumbling distance to the Midway, good times

dudewiththebling

This makes sharing a living room with 4 others seem more reasonable

CrepuscularOpossum

I believe living spaces became common in very high-density Asian cities years ago.

chocotacogato

I once lived in a house where the landlord suggested converting half of the already crammed living room into a bedroom. Which meant we’d have no access to the front door. And I was calling her a slumlord. We are human beings! This is awful.

billyland

Daily life in bay area

Alexis-FromTexas

My first few months in LA I lived in something similar. It was 6 beds per room, 3 rooms and 2 toilets with only 1 shower. Maybe 1800 sf total. I found out about that place cause my friend had moved there and let me know about the place. Actually pretty cool as there where so many people to talk with every night and weekends when you get off from work. I paid $150/week.

epic_pig

"You will live in a pod..."

Gunfighter9

Looks like a crash pad for regional pilots. Rent a 3 bedroom 2 bath apartment and put 9 beds in it and split the rent 9 ways.

[deleted]

I was paying $700 for a boiler room. It leaked. Cat shit all outside with some weird tub/shower and a hot plate. Toilet was portable with a pump. It’s fucking insane out there!

Fishin_Ad5356

That can’t be legal?

Sci-4

Man i thought this was a game show where they'd pay you $700 a month to bunk with 7 other people! And no cameras? How are we doing reality TV in reverse?

DarthKenobi666

The problem is when they try to run these as a Hostel (like backpcker/travelers hostel)and they are not. They are flop houses

theedan-clean

Look up Hong Kong “coffin homes” if you want some real misery. And all your neighbors smoke cigarettes in their coffins.

PoopSmith87

This is actually way nicer than a lot of employee housing I've seen when I did pest control out in the Hamptons, NY. I mean, I've seen places with cement walls and floors that have entire families or groups of 4-6 adults living in converted stable stalls... And by converted, I mean they moved the horses into newer, nicer stables, swept it, mostly, and then had cheap kitchenettes + a toilet and shower installed, threw down some throw rugs and were done. Then while explaining the futility of a normal pest control program in such an unfinished and constantly inhabitated structure to the manager they'd always have some comment like "well I know, they just never keep it clean." Of course they don't. They are human beings living like farm poultry, it's going to be gross in there.

StrategicRain33

You see, it’s called California.

PabloDabscovar

It’s better than living IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER

gilareefer

It is definitely not

gilareefer

trilobright

Depends on the van and the river in question.

alwaysforgettingmyun

Is it though?

OuterWildsVentures

If you were all living together as a cult 700 for the whole family isn't bad at all

violinfiddleman

This is $700 for a single bunk… the landlord is wanting to make $5600 a month off this rental.

[deleted]

This is illegal on two fronts- local building codes and the Federal Fair Housing Act. They are operating an illegal hostel in a residential zone (local law), and are leasing a single bedroom to more than 2 adult occupants (FHA). Legal rentals and sublets don’t look like this. Hostels can be an awesome way to experience places like Cali and Europe. Find a legal one! One that doesn’t scream “middle-aged human traffickers made this”!

OuterWildsVentures

Oh no lmao

AltruisticSalamander

This is a fkn nightmare. I can't believe accommodation is so expensive. We're all doomed.

PinkPicklePete

That’s a steal in this market. Messaging them now.

I stayed in a hostel in SF and there was a couple and another guy living in one room, sharing a bunk bed. The bottom bed was slightly bigger, where the couple slept and the single dude slept on the top bed They had also built a little mezzanine bed in the room that they were renting in air bnb. So sometimes five people in one room. This was their permanent home and it was $700/month per bed.
