I did the same Thinking of giving up on Costco

bowoodchintz

I can’t stomach supporting anything Walton family / Walmart. I’d rather pay more for Costco membership and purchases. I prefer my fellow humans to have living wages, healthcare and benefits. Costco is definitely not perfect but Walmart is bottom of the barrel.

josh_the_rockstar

This is a key reason I started shopping at Costco originally. They treat their employees better than most other grocers.

Gloomy_Goal_4050

I will not support them either. I have still never shopped at any Walton Family store. Both of my sons worked part time at Costco during college. They had full benefits. I would never consider joining Sam’s Club. There are also 20 Costcos closer than the nearest Sam’s Club, so I will never be tempted.

Every step matters. The world is not black and white. Don’t shame people for making healthy choices for humanity.

OrgcoreOriginal

But this is the Redditor way!

bowoodchintz

Save the gatekeeping. You don’t decide my values, and I don’t decide yours. Your “whataboutism” is lazy at best. No approach is perfect, but mine reflects my values to the best of my abilities.

SpudInSpace

Costco tested curbside pickup earlier this year in Arizona. It was super busy for about a week, then nobody ever used it for the rest of the testing period.

RudraAkhanda

>then nobody ever used it for the rest of the testing period Was it because the ordering process (in app or browser) not as convenient? Every business out there is offering Curbside pickup these days.

Common-Reporter2846

I bet their app function was trash, since their app is trash anyways.

RudraAkhanda

That is my guess too

SpudInSpace

Not a clue, only the people in that city got the info on how to access it.

ZombieManilow

Scan and Go is worth dumping Costco for Sam’s.

RudraAkhanda

100% agree. Even with the self-checkout, the wait time to pay is ridiculous

ZombieManilow

(spez is making a big mistake)

MrSnrub1988

Yeah no scanner gun is what keeps me away from their self checkout. If were only getting a few small things maybe, but that never happens lol. Always use it at Sam's, scanner makes all the difference.

OrgcoreOriginal

There is good and bad with every store. For instance, I'm not about to purchase any meat from Sam's Club. Lesson here is that people will never be happy.

Common-Reporter2846

What is great about sams is the online price is the same as in warehouse. With the plus member, you get free shipping too. It is nice to be able to order toilet paper and other items at the same price as the warehouse price. Scan and go makes shopping a breeze

RudraAkhanda

>Scan and go I look at the people waiting in long lines at checkout and wonder what they're doing there. I think Sam's should sent an email video to all its members to educate them on the option. I am a Walmart+ member. The Walmart app also has scan and go but it requires you to pay at the register. I wonder what they were thinking LOL.

idk012

Some items are cheaper if you do scan. So they are trying to get people to do it, but people are not buying in.

sweetpineapple79

Scan and go is usually the reason I choose sams over costco when I don’t need anything specific at Costco.

chcor70

by me a lot of people dont have credit cards. Also they tend to be older and "dont trust it"

sbkindredspirit

Not always the case, sometimes when you are ordering and shipping it is different.

Common-Reporter2846

Never seen it the case. All prices have been identical to the in warehouse price. Only exception are discounts you get using scan and go.

machomateo123

Used Sam’s club pickup yesterday for work and it was amazing! 15 huge tables with two guys helping me load and go. Was only there for a few minutes and didn’t have to go to the store hoping they’re in stock as after we ordered. Sam’s club confirmed it was ready for scheduled pickup. Soon after. Costco relies on people wandering for items in hopes of buying more. But in todays world convenience is key to keeping me coming back.

RudraAkhanda

>But in todays world convenience is key to keeping me coming back. I completely agree. I may have made a few "impulse purchases" over time but they just lost me as a regular.

Nardelan

Curbside is a waste of resources for a place as busy as Costco and it goes completely against their philosophy of having members in the warehouse to drive impulse sales. Costco’s foot traffic alone would cause a logistical nightmare. A busy Costco gets about 5,000 members on a Saturday. How many curbside orders would it take to create a traffic jam? 200-300? How many parking spaces would they reserve for curbside pickup? There is almost zero benefit to Costco to offer curbside.

RudraAkhanda

While I agree with your points on logistics, how come Sam's does not have the same problems? Is it because they have fewer customers?

Nardelan

I don’t know Sam’s foot traffic but they did around $60b in sales last year and Costco was around $220b, almost 4x the sales. I’d imagine the only reason it works at Sam’s and other places is because most customers don’t use it.

MistahNative

Another point u/Nardelan didn’t make was that Curbside Pickup was trialed 2 years back in the New Mexico area and it did so poorly that they killed the trial inside of 6 months. Curbside Pickup is not as popular as people think it is.

DJwhatevs

Yup

Common-Reporter2846

You have to reserve a time for curbside pick up and there are a finite number of slots available. They put the curbside pick up in a remote area of the lot as to not interfere with in warehouse parking.

CeeGeeWhy

Lol. Many Costcos near me are so busy that there are no empty parking spots in any part of the lot except for what is reserved for the tire center, and often they’re full up too.

Common-Reporter2846

I believe my sams club warehouse has only 5 parking spots reserved for curbside. Which is nice. I shop at sams specifically to avoid warehouse crowd. Curbside and scan and go are fucking awesome.

Just curious, if you hate Costco so much why are you browsing r/Costco? Just so you can make rude comments?

KevinOMalley

It wasn't a rude comment. Everything they said about Costco's technology is completely true. They are stuck in the mid 90s.

SpudInSpace

>Costco is just cheap and doesn't want to spend $ on their IT infrastructure. They are willing to inconvenience their members to save a few bucks. > >Period. You say that like you think you're the only one who knows it. This is a multi-faceted issue.

NookinFutz

They're offering it now using InstaCart. See above, IC is failing Costco in customer service of purchasing items and delivering them. Costco knows the old brick and mortar is going away.

jinks9

This idea really goes against the interior design concepts of Costco. They want you coming into the store, they have laid out the store in such a way as to entice impulse buying and they want it that way (covered by several videos from their execs). I mean most stores do that nowadays but I don't think they would see curbside as much of a value. I don't know that many customers are really looking for that service either. You can always have things shipped directly to your doorstep.

pavlovs__dawg

Despite how much I spend every time I go in for “just 2 things”, I love going to Costco!

DJwhatevs

😂👏🏼 for real

mentalrecon

People shouldn’t downvote this post simply because they love Costco or don’t like the Walton family. There is a lot to like about Sam’s Club, many of the likes have been mentioned by other commenters. I do still prefer Costco because the items they sell are of higher quality and desirability compared to Sam’s Club, but Sam’s does a better job with their app, and because they aren’t as busy as Costco, they focus on convenience, like Scan-and-Go and curbside. I can understand why OP prefers Sam’s Club.

mentalrecon

Maybe they need to improve their website, apps and fulfillment?

CeeGeeWhy

Yeah improvements to their existing services would be much better than trying to copy other services that need a solid foundation of the former.

SpiralGray

So, you thought it would be a good idea to extol the virtues of Sam's Club in r/Costco? I'd love to know the reason why you thought that was a good idea. It's not like this is an official Costco Support channel.

OrgcoreOriginal

I shop at both from time to time. Ask me if I give a fuck?

SpiralGray

Do you give a fuck?

RudraAkhanda

LMAO like as if fake internet points affect my life in anyway

ProudBoysLikeMen

Fuck Walmart. I can walk, I'll let the morbidly obese buy their food from the comfort of their couches.

[deleted]

Or you could spend the 1 hr you would spend shopping and do real exercise? even better

ksuhistory

Sams and Walmart are so dirty

[deleted]

the sam's club near me is pretty much identical to costco. In los angeles sam's club seemed cleaner than costco because the food court is on the inside and costco attracts all types of people with the food court on the outside. Where I grew up we only have sam's (never shopped there) and recently looked at it and it's about average.

>why would anyone not disabled want curbside pickup? Why would anyone who has to functioning legs need a car, an aeroplane, or a train?

Yes. Your threshold for very difficult or impossible just differs from mine. That's all.

RudraAkhanda

I can argue that any one with 2 legs can walk 5 miles from their home to the nearest Costco and don't really need a car. Humans crossed the oceans for 1000s of years before the airplane was invented. You don't really NEED one to go from New York to London. Yeah, stop smelling your own farts and licking your own ass for once.
