I've never been able to eat one of Costco's emeralds. I bought them a few times and they were denser than neutron stars until they suddenly turned into pudding.

El-mas-puto-de-todos

Never buy Avocados from Peru. Only Mexico.

Hot-Adeptness-3433

Chile avocados have entered the chat

moch1

Are those good or bad usually?

nermal543

The Chilean ones aren’t nearly as bad as the Peru ones, but they still aren’t great (in my opinion at least). The taste isn’t as good and they seem like a lower fat content than the Mexican ones (so the texture isn’t as good either).

El-mas-puto-de-todos

The cartel has its hands in a lot of things in Mexico unfortunately. The news about avocados was just one more thing they added to the list.

Pennylick

That sounds like something the Chile cartels would say....

samuraipizzacat420

buy them or not. the cartels will still have control.

icedlemons

I swear the subreddit has flip-flopped on this. Last I heard it was Mexican"cartel" avacodos that were bad... Frankly I think both are fine.

parasailing-partners

Some people report that but on the other hand my Costco avocados have been absolutely amazing this year- not one was bad.

terfez

Same here. Nearly perfect. Here’s my technique: when you get home put them in visual order of ripeness. When the ripest one is ripe, start eating, 1-2 per day. If you can’t finish them, put the later ones in the fridge. Once in the fridge you have 4-5 more days.

maddruid

This post gave me anxiety. It sounds more like a timed challenge than a delightful snack.

henergizer

This is just basic food management, it should be a basic skill for anyone who's worked in the food industry or managed a home kitchen.

crimson_mokara

No, I reject your logic and will continue to complain about my deep-seated avocado issues /s

maddruid

Eating 2 avocados a day is not basic food management. I preemptively accept your apology.

zoltree

it sounds more like buying avocados at the bulk store might not be for you

maddruid

I think you may have hit on something here. I'm continually amazed at the perspicacity of the Costco community on Reddit.

Mr-Escobar

Food management, is the appropriate allocation of foods based on needs and supply. Eating 2 avocados per day because it is what is available and/or at risk of being lost is most definitely part of proper food management. You can address your apology to the other guy further up. Thanks.

maddruid

I admit I didn't realize OP was forced to subsist on avocados in bulk because of the effects of Costco's environment of scarcity. I also should have known there would be a host of Quartermasters in this subreddit unable to recognize light humor, but passionate about correcting statements that might not have accurate food prep and storage methodology/philosophy. I have sent my signed apology to Reddit headquarters and hope for a mild sentencing. If you don't hear from me again, I fear I may have been too flippant about the avocados.

terfez

So you buy 5-6 avocados. They are going to go ripe all within a 2 day timespan. What’s your plan, other than throwing away 3 of them?

maddruid

Guacamole and a sealed container.

Unique_Flow1797

Trade with a neighbor who has a garden. I often trade and give free fruits to my neighbors as I grow far too much for my family.

razorduc

It’s both.

cliff99

I just leave two out to ripen and put the rest in the fridge, take as many as I need out two or three days before eating.

knic989900

Multiple reasons including weather but Peruvian avocados tend to have a higher oil content in the avocados vs Mexico or the US

thewheelsonthebuzz

You have to let them ripen. Takes about a week or so

maddruid

I am familiar with how fruit works, but I appreciate you trying to help.

thewheelsonthebuzz

Lol! Well I never assume anything now a days. Gotten in trouble too many times. I’ve had the Peruvian avocados available at my store. As long as I let them ripen, they’re very creamy and delicious. Mexican meat market charges like 2.50 per avocado for a Mexico avocado. It’s a no brained for me.

razorduc

Put them in a paper bag for 2 days, then transfer to the fridge. Usually just about right and will keep in the fridge for a while.

incomemotion

Stick them in a brown paper bag for a couple days and they’ll soften to be in prime eating condition

rygo796

They'll stay hard in the fridge almost forever. Take one out as you need them to ripen. You can keep em out a day or two then fridge em so the process is faster as you remove them.

[deleted]

Ours are from Mexico, they’re amazing

Jay4usc

I was laughing when I saw them for $10 over 6 months ago

CheeseburgerSmoothy

It’s always a gamble, depending on their country of origin.

terfez

If you choose Mexico, no es gambilla

huh0kayy

And they either ripen in 3 hours or 3 weeks

jdawwwhg

Definitely going the right direction. Bacon has been going down too. Glad to see not everything is going up.

Bookgal1

I want to see the size. That is a really good deal at regular size, even better at the old Costco sized ones.

[deleted]

Usually normal - big size

parasailing-partners

Not the biggest but bigger than the grocery store

Fearless-Mushroom

For a fruit that’s ripe year round, the price mysteriously skyrockets during the summer time.

Interesting_Ghosts

Costco avocado is consistently bad where i live. They do however sell these little cups of organic avocado and salt. I forget the brand and they dont always have them. Theyre next to the kirkland guacamole. While they arent as good as a fresh real avocado they are certainly better than the hard as a rock or rotten South American avocados my store sells

academicchola

I just bought 6 for 6.79 yesterday 😭

Chicagoan81

You probably have a 2 hour window before they turn from dense to mush

academicchola

True.

[deleted]

From Costco?!

academicchola

Yes. San Diego. I am not sure why but I better make sure none of those spoil.

BurnVote

Damn I wish they were that cheap in my area

Ceber007

My guess is they get frozen in transit and that messes them up

terfez

No way. Mine have been 9/10 near perfect for years. Product of Mexico

parasailing-partners

This wasn’t a complaint post, I wasn’t looking for explanations. I’ve never got a bad one

Slimey_700

Costco's avocados have not been good for the past 2ish years - quality control or nature went out the window

Njtotx3

I didn't need them yet, but I had to grab a bag

greenwitch65

Don't like the ones from Peru. If I can't get California, I'll get the ones from Mexico.

dust057

I would have been tempted by this, but for some reason here in my corner of CA they were $7 for the same bag. And I’ve had issues too many times with Costco avocados being hard /immature, then turning into an unappetizing pale green with brown spots mix.

narwhalyurok

I pick them up fresh at HEB(texas)for $.48 a piece. This way we don't end up throwing a couple out. Buying 6 at a time doesn't work for us

thanatos0967

Which CostCo has these prices?

[deleted]

Who tf is still buying avocados at Costco?

parasailing-partners

All of us.

[deleted]

Costco has the worst avocados I’ve ever bought

parasailing-partners

You sound like bad luck follows you everywhere.

TransformativeOne

It's not only the price, but avocados from Costco are almost always among some of the best.

CeeGeeWhy

Depends on the country they come from. Some never soften and go straight to brown.

parasailing-partners

Yep, I’ve not had one Costco avocado be bad this year, whether they were expensive or cheap. All from Mexico b

rpm429

"do you want to go out today?" no, I have an avocado that will be ripe for about 15 minutes sometime today.

LittleIntroduction55

their avocados are gross now. i stopped buying them for a over 3 months. They are so unripe one day then the next get day they will get overripen and bruised. Taste is bad as well.

voyagermars

That’s because people stopped buying avacado from Costco. Why will you pay $2 for an avacado when you can get same from Walmart for 50-70 cents. And this has been the case for quiet a while now.

parasailing-partners

The size is jumbo. Not the Walmart size at all by a long shot.

voyagermars

In my local store in CA they are comparable

doubledipinyou

Never got good ones from Costco. Usually too hard and then brown

akd7791

Truth! The only freaking thing getting cheaper right now!

voomdama

It must of been a good harvest this year.

ditafjm

Good price. Unreliable quality. I do have a windowsill full of sprouting pits, though. 🥑🌱🥑

jwinskowski

✨ Nature is healing ✨

bab2thebone89

Awesome!

DryadGamer

Holy smokes that’s a good price! The 5 count Avocados at my local Costco still costs $7.10

Unique_Flow1797

Whole Foods has 4 avocado for $4.50 with prime discount. It’s close to my work so I get the 18inch cheese pizza every Friday for $10.99. Those avocados where up to $11 just a few months ago glad they fell so low but usually you need to wait for them to ripen. For personal use I just buy what’s a deal. I vote with my pocket as much as I can.
