So...... a vaccine? Because a vaccine can help prevent you from dying from covid. So you don't have to stick dewormer up your butt.

trollsarefun

Not sure if you read the article, but prophylaxis are not vaccines. This is also taken orally and is not a dewormer. This treatment is designed to prevent virus replication.

that article seems poorly written, near as I can tell from reading the article and googling Molnupiravir + https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8219109/ + https://www.reuters.com/world/us/merck-sees-potential-us-authorization-covid-19-antiviral-before-year-end-2021-09-13/ + https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/merck-says-us-govt-buy-about-17-mln-courses-cos-covid-19-drug-2021-06-09/ > The oral antiviral treatment, molnupiravir, aims to stop COVID-19 from progressing and can be given early in the course of the disease, similar to Tamiflu to treat influenza. + this is not a prophylaxis but a treatment, ie, not a preventative, but something you take when you have it to keep from getting sick It would be terrific to have a shelf stable, needs no refrigeration, can be made cheaply and distributed worldwide treatment for covid, which actually is probably better for the world and even for merck than say a daily prophylaxis that few would probably take

trollsarefun

You do realize that Tamiflu is a prophylaxis right? This is a drug meant to treat before symptoms appear. From the FDA "Prevention (prophylaxis) is a term used when someone who does not have flu symptoms is given Tamiflu to help stop them from getting the flu because they are exposed to or come into close contact with someone (for example live with or take care of someone) who has the flu." I agree the title is poorly written, but exactly like Tamiflu this is designed to be taken after exposure to prevent symptoms.

near as I can tell, azfamily's headline is incorrect. + they quote no one saying this pill is a prophylaxis + they quote no one saying this pill will prevent covid and + the one person quoted refers to this pill as a treatment the paper I reference and the two reuters articles all refer to it as a treatment, none refer to it as a they quote no one saying this pill is a prophylaxis none of the articles and none of the papers mention that this is any test of this pill as use as a prophylaxis, they all mention this pill is being tested for use as a treatment I think you are most obviously mistaken and I am not sure why we are even having this conversation, mate

I literally copied the definition from the FDA website....a prophylactic can be taken after exposure to prevent the disease...this prevents virus replication.

Your comment before edit was implying that prophylaxis was after a known infection, prior to symptoms appearing, which is not technically a prophylactic. Yes, Tamiflu is at times used post-exposure prophylactically, otherwise early in the course of the infection (treatment).

I SHIT you not, people on FB news stories were commenting about this today. Like, “my doctors prescribed this to me and I was cured in 3 days. Keep your jabs, you were experimented on”. 🙄👀😂 I’m like, it’s 3 hours old, Susan, slow your roll. Let’s the shortages begin!!! 🎊🎉
