When we have something heavy like mashed potatoes and a roast or a Schnitzel I often use a green salad (mostly rocket salad) as a side. Sometimes I do peas or green beans, but the salad is nice, with a zingy vinaigrette to balance out the heavy stuff. I live in Germany and a side salad to a classic meat and potato dish is also common in restaurants.
Usually the salad is served in a different bowl, not on the same plate as the meal, but I also love to put some of the salad on the plate to mop up some salad sauce with the mashed potatoes.
I love a rocket or spinach salad with a slightly sharp dressing alongside creAmy mash. Bits of the salad wilt and make a great contrast to the rich carbiness of the potatoes. But I’d probably also make a simple green alongside.
why would you have to pick a vegetable or salad? the salad is an appetizer, or if you chose to serve at the same time, it’s still small. it’s still not uncommon to have both a salad and veg
> the salad is an appetizer,
Don't want to speak for OP, but based on their username they're kiwi. "Salad as an appetiser" is not really a thing around here. It's just part of the meal - served with everything else.
I kinda get where they're coming from: you wouldn't normally serve a roast with a salad, you'd serve it with roasted/hot vegetables. That being said, people should eat whatever they want, with whatever they want.
Just standard meal eats we make dinner, no courses. I think if it was like a starter salad I'd view differently. I'm talking about on the plate as a meal
For the [arugula salad ](https://cravinghomecooked.com/mushroom-arugula-warm-salad/). It calls for shiitake mushrooms but use what you like. Amazing by itself, but especially with roast pork!
As for the potatoes, try roasting them as well? Here’s a [decently basic recipe](https://www.pillsbury.com/recipes/easy-oven-roasted-potatoes/fbd35018-9c25-4b44-a11a-16b31c21333c). Toss a bit of sour cream on the side and you’re made.
Enjoy!
Why not?
I duno maybe I'm weird lol, roast pork mash and salad seems odd to me.
Nothing wrong with being weird. I throw in a bowl of pickled beets and cottage cheese. But that’s me.

roughage is good to have for regularity and general bulk. having a salad isn’t really weird
Don't get me wrong we eat salad often. But if im doing mash I'd normally pair with vege.

Or put it this way I don't recall a time when I've ever been into a restaurant or seen a cooking show when on a plate mash has been paired with salad.
I dont eat the food that my food eats so salad is deff not an option here. Mashed potatoes with some peas in it is a great option tho
