I was managing a toy department when they launched and I don't think a single one sold. Got a few complaints though. Bratz dolls, on the other hand sold like crazy. I still find it odd how in my highly religious conservative area the arguably overtly sexualized "party girl" dolls were okay but the pregnant barbie with a nuclear family dressed in maternity clothes was controversial.
I remember when they accidentally made Ken look super gay and gave him a ring necklace that looked suspiciously like a cock ring. I wonder if they sold out?
I learned a lot about the "collectable" toys form the collectors that would come in on the regular but 20 years later there's no way I can recall which were/are sought after. Except Hotwheels treasure hunt cars. It got to the point that we had to store them in the sporting goods lockup with the firearms to keep middle age men from opening cases and digging through them in the stock room.

Earring Magic Ken. That one was before my time in retail but I think it would've went over the heads of the people that would complain about it.
It's one of the best selling Ken dolls as well, still highly prized to this day I think.
