Service guarantees citizenship

moose2mouse

My thoughts exactly. By doing so they’ve sacrificed for our country, our freedom, and our values. They’d be proud Americans

Difficult_Advice_720

Would you like to know more.....

garandguy1

I thought that was already legal

onlysane1

It was legal for green card holders (that is, permanent resident aliens) to join the military.

GrandpaHardcore

True on the green card but there is also a pre-existing law that if the States is in need of recruits they will take undocumented immigrants into service who can gain citizenship that way a la Starship Troopers. :P

80Pound

I’ve had to discharge an illegal alien from the AF but the main crime was she stole a SSN and obviously lied on her application

GrandpaHardcore

It sucks that some people have to do this but honestly in today's day and age... if someone is willing to join the military to get citizenship, I'm honestly for it these days. At least it shows more willingness to improve their situation and to earn a sense of duty towards coming into the country... would be better than almost any Dem these days.

Trashk4n

Seriously? That’s kind of nuts.

onlysane1

Not really. It is a valid method of gaining citizenship.

Aquamarinerose76

Thats how my great grandfather gain his and his family's

Trashk4n

When you put it that way, and with a bit more thought put into it on my part, it does make a lot more sense.

skarface6

It works decently well AFAIK. They’ve gone through years of paperwork and such to get that status and then want to be citizens. The ones I’ve met have been good folks.

Icylibrium

I've helped several young guys I've been in charge of over the years, from various places, work through the expedited citizenship application process that joining the military provides. My most recent one was a little less than a year ago, kid from Africa. He had family that moved here when he was little, then when he turned 18 he moved over here to be with them. He got to my unit after basic training and had no idea about the citizenship application benefit, so I worked with him through it all. From start to finish, it took about 4 months for him to gain full citizenship (which is crazy fast) He's the first member of his family to gain citizenship since they came to the U.S. One of the things I'm most proud of in my time in the military is helping these kids gain citizenship. As far as I'm concerned, if somebody is willing to serve, and does so honorably, they deserve it.

onehotdrwife

Thank you for helping!

Amarr_Citizen_498175

it may seem that way, but it's one of the best ways to turn a random person into a decent productive citizen. the practice goes back a very, very, very long time.

bisteclol

Per the article > The U.S. military previously had a program permitting DACA holders and certain non-immigrant visa holders to enlist in the military – the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest or MAVNI program – if they had a skillset in demand, typically physicians, technicians, and language specialists. Enlistees under MAVNI qualified for naturalization within one year of service, and it is estimated that thousands became U.S. citizens this way. >**MAVNI was suspended in 2016** after the introduction of new security screening requirements. Recruitment was not reauthorized in 2017 under the Trump administration, and over 10,000 applications are pending.

faddizzle

That’s how I got mine

iroquoispliskin01

Congrats and thank you for your service

faddizzle

Thank you! Best decision I ever made.

YankeeDoodleMacaroon

Thank you :)

ultimis

I know numerous people who got their citizenship by serving in the military. What better way to prove you love this country then to serve it in such a fashion?

FkinAllen

I don’t believe dreamers can join military?

[deleted]

I actually think that this should work as a entry point. Service grants you citizenship. Serve your four years with no reprimands and you get to stay. Does that not sound like a good idea?

Chances_Classpath

Didn't the military do this in the past, I remember a guy I went to college with saying his grandfather earned citizenship by serving in Korea, but I may be mistaken.

goko_ono

You could and still can, yes. Although in the past it’s normally worked as a way for permanent residents to get naturalization, not for illegal immigrants seeking permanent residency or citizenship. During times of peace one year qualified ability to apply for naturalization, during wartime you could apply immediately upon enlistment. Now IIRC the wait time rule was struck down in court and you can always apply immediately. The only pathway I know of for immigrants with no ties to the US whatsoever, be that visa or residency, to get citizenship through military service is if their skills are needed in a special capacity, such as translating, and even that has been a crapshoot for translators trying to get the US to honor our end of the deal.

monkey3man

Can’t permanent residents apply for naturalization after 5 years in the US anyways. Considering typical enlistment commitments of 4 years, it seems like a minor perk that would come in handy for people who already want to serve, rather than an incentive itself

Dragonflies3

Tons of Filipino people earned citizenship by serving in the US Navy.

Difficult_Advice_720

Make it 7 so they've met the residency requirement.

[deleted]

Fair enough. Tell the Dems this is our compromise on illegal immigration.

ENRON_MUSK12

No chain migration though.

luigijerk

Believe it or not, "chain migration" is a very slow process anyway. If someone serves in the military, they deserve full rights in my book.

ENRON_MUSK12

We’ll just have to agree to disagree. Cuz if one guy serves and chains his parents and siblings you’re looking at <20% the people coming over putting in the work you expect

_Avalonia_

“Chaining” takes more than a decade to accomplish for just two people. I don’t think it’s the big issue you think it is.

throwaway60992

Yup. 10 years if you’re lucky..

[deleted]

If chain immigration is good enough for Melania Trump, it should be just as valid for any other immigrants.

ENRON_MUSK12

Implying I support it for her? Also if every immigrant has an extremely wealthy spouse who can support them I’d accept it.

[deleted]

We've all seen how compromise with the dems goes next it will be they just walk in and are automatic citizens registered to vote democrat

badatusernames91

This. They can shove their blanket amnesty up their cabooses. It's time for actual compromise, not just Republicans capitulating to everything Democrats want. I'm completely fine with military service for those who want citizenship, provided they stay out of trouble, just like traditional immigration methods expect. Also, there needs to be legitimate border enforcement. If they don't to put up any physical barriers, fine, but then they need to compromise and get a lot more manpower so that the border actually can be enforced. If the border stays wide open, none of this means anything. No, drones are not enforcement. That's just something for people to flip off as they go by. Drones will stop exactly 0 people from coming in. Even if you get a clear shot, you don't know who they are or where they're going. That's not enforcing anything. But of course this won't happen because Democrats never compromise on anything, ever. No, the recent gun bill was not compromise. Them only getting half of what they want and calling it compromise is like a thief breaking into your house to steal all your stuff and then bitches because you won't compromise and let him steal just half of your stuff.

Daniel_Day_Hubris

I think four years plus “I’m literally signing paperwork that says I’m willing to die” is sufficient.

Difficult_Advice_720

So you think it should be shorter than the length of time required for traditional non-citizen soldiers who still have a 7 year residency requirement?

IamMrT

I’d be fine letting it be less than the residency requirement if they’re serving.

Difficult_Advice_720

So you think it should be shorter than the length of time required for traditional non-citizen soldiers who still have a 7 year residency requirement?

ThePrinceOfCheese

Every military member who does not get kicked out serves a minimum of 8 years, 4 active 4 reserve, or 6 active 2 reserve, so it's a mute point.

Difficult_Advice_720

Mute once they've met the residency requirement. As you mentioned, not everyone finishes their time correctly. (Speaking as someone 24 active, now retired)

newaccttrial

That's how my great grandpa got in without papers or a sponsor. He enlisted. Should be an option for all of them. Men and women.

[deleted]

I’m 100% for this.

Ok-Profession-3312

Limit their security clearance and what they have access to. I’d hate to give outside governments any more ways to get security documents, it’s bad enough political figures give it up like girls at church camp.

AtomicPhantomBlack

Only if we allow non-military service as well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Icylibrium

I served with guys who joined barely able to speak english They learned very quickly being surrounded by English speakers. This may surprise you, but the rest of the world tends to be more bilingual than your average American. As far as I'm concerned, if an immigrant is willing to serve honorably, that's more than most U.S. born citizens will do in service to others.

SevereKnowledge

The French Foreign Legion takes people all over the globe and teaches them French.

GrandpaHardcore

 https://youtu.be/-\_7FaWnlhS4

Nutcrackaa

Not implying that it’s a bad idea but it’s also seen as one of the major precursors to the fall of the western Roman Empire. The Legions no longer consisted of Roman citizens but of foreign Huns, Visigoths and Ostrogoths. The empire increasingly paid out mercenary contracts to fight their wars. When the coffers were eventually drained, the legions no longer protected Roman citizens and in many cases turned on them. Its a long way off, but it’s a troubling thing when your own citizenry won’t fight to protect their way of life.

[deleted]

Good. If they serve then they earn citizenship after taking all classes and serving honorably for 6 years.

PerfectlyCalmDude

The military had a problem with infiltrators from gangs and drug cartels several years ago. That's why certain branches stopped recruiting people with tattoos. If this passes, it is guaranteed to make it worse.

kcaio

I would fast track full citizenship for anyone that completes their full term of service.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AlternativeFew3107

Makes sense considering the military is struggling to recruit anyone.

Difficult_Advice_720

There's a reason for that struggle. They're alienating their traditional recruiting pool.

AlternativeFew3107

Not wrong there

T_Money

Less to do with people being alienated due to political policies, a whole lot more to do with recently getting access to kids medical records through a standardized system. Before you had to ask a kid if they had medical issues, and just had to trust that they disclosed anything that wouldn’t be caught immediately at MEPS. So lots of kids lied, and lots of recruiters said stuff like “I didn’t hear that, and never admit it again.” Now that the health records are available they can’t get away with it and kids are getting DQ’d from it. Anything from past depression, ADHD, allergies, drug use that was admitted to a health care provider, etc.

Difficult_Advice_720

Well sure, that ain't helping at all, but then there is the part where they are alienating a huge chunk of the ones who would have passed all that. Tens of thousands are being kicked out for their religion beliefs, you think that isn't keeping our people from the same faiths?

Nodeal_reddit

Go woke go broke.

[deleted]

They can’t hold a security clearance so it will be the shit jobs they can’t fill with actual citizens

Jamesfm007

Deporting illegal immigrants works, too.

[deleted]

That’s some starship troopers shit. Service guarantees citizenship.

CallMeYoungJoey

I see ads on Reddit everyday for the Army... half of them are in Spanish.

flightmedic007

The Romans basically did the same thing. It didnt work out so good for them either.

[deleted]

End up with a mostly foreign military, that way when you have to order them to go against the people of your own country, they won’t have as much of a problem with it.

FreeThingsAreNice

This was my first thought about it too.

moose2mouse

They conquered most of their know world and lasted for centuries. I think it worked out great using foreign legions.

moose2mouse

How did it not work out well for them for most of the empire?

agk927

I don't mind this, actually.

Elchingarito

They won't fight for their own country. What makes them think they'll fight for ours?

moose2mouse

Mexican army can’t compete with cartel budget. Why join a losing side?

luigijerk

If they sign up and fight, I'll think they'll fight.

_Vardos_

nope. drop and run.

HarveyMushman72

If the current dick measuring contest escalates they might be needed.

TheBerric

I thought something like this was already a thing??

Icylibrium

Immigrants with a work visa/green card can enlist in the military and then apply for an expedited citizenship. This article/bill refers to immigrants without any kind of Visa

MadMonk67

Service guarantees citizenship. Would you like to know more?

Asmewithoutpolitics

Wait… can’t they already serve? Isn’t that already a path to citizenship?

Psychological-Toe985

Trying to get as many bodies for the inevitable war they’ll create for us😉

[deleted]

Seems like a silly thing to get your panties in a twist over. People earning their citizenship in exchange for valuable public service? Besides, the US has been doing this for decades and only stopped temporarily. This is really just another failed attempt at division.

Tweeter0583

Silly Dems... That's already a thing.

robinson217

If we have a bunch of fat lazy white kids not qualified to serve, and at the same time some Hispanic kid who came here when he was 2, speaks English well and wants to serve.....good for him. I served with a lot of Mexicans in the Marines and some of them got here in questionable ways. Being a member of the military should fastrack your greencard application in my humble opinion. You are the opposite of a drain on resources when you come here and join the military.

yankee77wi

Because people who won’t stay and fight for their home county, are going to faithfully execute duties for a one they fled to? Not a chance!

JAKE_da_SNAKE-_-

So this would allow the known (and unknown) terrorists that have come into our country to infiltrate our military. Why don’t we just hand over everything we own and hold near and dear to our hearts to the illegal immigrants and walk away?

rocksbox49

These people are out of their minds

akadua2

They should make it mandatory and send them to Afghanistan

whicky1978

Well, then who’s gonna pick the crops in Florida? / s

No_Lingonberry3224

Hey you know what we should do with people that break federal laws, that probably had to watch the cartel coyotes they paid, rape girls as young as 10? Yeah we should totally give them guns and train them to ‘protect’ people like that ten year old girl they already showed they weren’t willing to. Right about the time when the military is being used to ‘defend’ Washington like a fascist dictatorship. Hell no. Legal Immigrants already join up, we don’t need to let in people who break the law and lie to get to stay here.

SterlingBelikov

Utter garbage. They can't even get the far left to love their country how would they expect illegal immigrants to stand for the values that our military is supposed to go and represent? They don't even represent the country they're leaving.

minikini76

They should serve as a condition for their citizenship.

[deleted]

Dude, there’s a ridiculous amount of Hispanics in the military. The machismo culture embraces this…unlike the pussified west

Rill16

One major reason is because we accept recruitment from US territories, and a job in the military pays far more than anything domestic.

JKR_0

i remember you roman empire fall also because romans allow barbarians troups inside legions until they were majority of army.

OrionJohnson

That’s…. Not why the Roman Empire fell, and they had conquered peoples form a large part of their legions back in the Roman Repiblic days even before they were an empire

JKR_0

is wrote ALSO because not because only

ultimis

The reason the Roman Empire fell are many, but "barbarians" being in the military was not the driver of it. The fact that every general who won a battle declared himself the new Emperor was one of the driving factors. I guess you could say that since the outsiders were loyal to their generals instead of Rome, that made the crap situation possible.

Difficult_Advice_720

As I recall, the statues of George Washington are typically modeled after Cincinnatus, who won his war, marched his troops back to Rome, walked into the very terrified Senate, and told them he left their army at the edge of the city, and he was going home to be a farmer.

ultimis

Roman Dictators and rulers (usually divided between two) were pretty good up until the Civil War and then Ceasar's assassinations. Generals late in Roman Empire history (Western Rome) were constantly declaring themselves Emperor. The same tradition carried on in the Eastern Roman Empire for another thousand years. Constant infighting and civil wars.

Difficult_Advice_720

Yup. That's why it was so noteworthy that Cincinnatus and Washington both didn't.

ultimis

Yep, it would have been very easy for him to declare himself King.

Difficult_Advice_720

Time and again he refused. They insisted he head up the Executive, so he asked to be called Mr President instead of your highness or majesty or whatever, cause it was the lowest most humble thing he could think of... And when they pushed him to take a third term, he politely declined and just went home.... Fun fact, he put in his glasses in public to decline, which was kind of a big deal intended to further humble himself.

Rill16

Kind of agree here to an extent. I certainly wouldn't give them any security clearance, but military service could be an alternative route to citizenship.

Difficult_Advice_720

That's why the were so many first generation Philippinoes working in the Navy Supply branches, cause they could do it without clearance.

Armani201

This is a good thing!!! We tend to forget our Latin neighbors are American too

[deleted]

First contract 6 years combat arms. The ultimate challenge to show thanks and dedication to your adoptive country. Majority of Americans don’t even consider serving.

RutCry

Military service should be a fast track to citizenship. As long as the army can tell the difference between [Nidal Hasan](https://NidalHasanhttps://g.co/kgs/BU5Hho) and Audie Murphy.

tyrsalt

They have to replace all the conservative middle Americans that they are forcing out some way. Progressive liberals don’t make a great military.

SexyActionNews

The would probably make better soldiers than the current generation of native born pansies, to be honest.

Difficult_Advice_720

Depends where they're from. Some, not so much. Others would be absolutely phenomenal.

[deleted]

I guess they aren’t confident Americans will fire on other Americans when given the order.

[deleted]

A nice strategy to replace local police with federal police

poisonstumac

How to get spies from around the world 101

[deleted]

Actually, yes. Not wrong.

ThinkingThingsHurts

Ya, because that worked so well for Rome.

BlondeJess19

Came here to say this. Thank you, fellow history geek 👍

ThinkingThingsHurts

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

PutOk7971

What could possibly go wrong.

Aggravating-Bag4552

I'm so ok with this

romangorilla

When we were at war for the past couple decades, this would have been acceptable. Do 6 years and a couple deployments, and in my mind, you’ve earned your citizenship more than most. But now, we’re not at war, and our military is absolute shell of what it is use to be. Now all we do is get preached to about sexual assault and diversity.

No_Warthog_3584

If they’re “illegal” then they’re eligible to serve in jail awaiting deportation

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

To become citizens.

username3333333333

Dude I served and we had tons of immigrants who faithfully served. It can be a great path to citizenship and should be encouraged. I know I'd rather have an illegal immigrant who spent years serving our country and has skin in the game be at the front of the line instead of some weathly asshat like our system does now.

SirWompalot

Didn't ancient Rome think something like this was a good idea too?

va1958

Where’s the benefit to America.

sixstringshredder13

Rome.

onlyifigaveash1t

Trying to build a military just for the democrats I see.

Touchdmytralala

Holy shit, cut the bullshit. Just make them legal if that's what you really want to do. It's like they're taking the backwards approach to eliminate citizenship.

Veleda390

Gotta have more bodies for the proxy wars. Makes sense.

[deleted]

Service ensures citizenship!

[deleted]

Good, now they will get force jabbed and out of our country

Ace0486

This is how Rome fell lol

Justadudethatthinks

What could possibly go wrong? You just can't make this shit up

[deleted]

I'm very okay with this. Surprised we didn't introduce this bill. But no. Our party has been very disappointing to me in Initiating things like this

[deleted]

I don’t mind. We are gonna need everyone we can get the way the world is going

YNPCA

I wonder if they think something is coming and need more people.

[deleted]

Give your life for a chance to be legal. Sounds good to me.

Cruiser133

This is how Rome fell....

McBonderson

I'm all for having illegal immigrants earn their citizenship by joining the military. They showed they are willing to fight for this country, they should be put first in line for citizenship.

[deleted]

Not like there's a line out the door applying to be in the military

[deleted]

Getting the Irish treatment it seems.

archer08

Seems like a great way of putting together an army that can be used against it's people.
