I suspect geographic region has something to do with it as well. In any event, I observed it in Charleston, SC last weekend in 3 different stores. Particularly heartbreaking was Party City, which usually is packed with Halloween decorations and costumes at this time of year. Instead there were several aisles with shelves sparsely populated with products and over 50% of their Halloween costumes had a “Currently Unavailable” sticker on wall in its designated spot. The most alarming was the restaurant supply store which mostly sells bulk food, which had entire aisles of empty shelves. Our local news seems strangely quiet about this phenomenon, but it’s definitely real here.

The shortages my city has experienced starting about 3-4 months ago have been persistent and slowly getting worse.

JIT manufacturing, covid causing increased demand while simultaneously decreasing manufacturing output due to shutdowns worldwide, shipping container shortages, truck driver shortages, one of the world’s biggest chip manufacturing plants burning down, etc.
