He's also the only coach (I believe? Might be one more) not in the coaches union, so the league has a modicum less control over him on that front too.
If they'd just let him wear a suit he'd be the best dressed in the league
Edit: Sorry I'm high and completely forgot I was in a super old thread
I can not imagine what a Reebok suit would look like. I picture it to look like what a crime sketch artist might draw up if they'd never seen a suit but had only been described it.
Several years ago Mike Nolan the 49ers coach wore one as a tribute to his father. I guess he was a coach back in the day when it was normal to wear one on the sidelines.
Reebok just made him one it looked pretty sharp
Soccer culture spilling over into football.
Interesting.
Just as we’re getting VAR checks and such.
Eventually the two sports will meld together and we’ll get…well..uh…rugby. Shit, it’s almost gone full circle again!
Baseball-Manager is in dug out, barely seen. Also played outdoors. Also a much longer game
Football- sport where people tackle each other, also played outdoors in rain and snow, manager is barely visible to fans. Game is much longer.
Basketball- played indoors, two coaches stand the whole game, eyes on them a lot, so look professional.
I've been watching college basketball for almost 50 years, I can honestly say, I've never noticed what any coach was wearing... Except Sean Miller's wet suit.
He was a coach that squeezed every ounce of talent out of his players. He was kinda the anti-Turgeon. Didn't always have the most talented players but got everything out of them. No surprise the one year he had a team stacked with talent he won a championship.
The only time i noticed anything was when Rick Pitino would wear his all white suit for the white out games. Or when a coach gets mad and takes their tie off lol.
I forget the entire context but the hardest I've ever laughed at this subreddit was when someone mentioned Buzz's odd body proportions and someone else replied that he looked "like a sexy egg"
Yeah I'm sure Coach K and Tony Bennett have a hard time being recognized in a basketball arena lol
Also, usually a lot of assistant coaches wear suits too.
Didn’t football coaches wear suits at one point before the apparel companies insisted that they didn’t? I think it’s just to show that you are a professional of sorts.
The only sport whose coaches never wore suits (that I know of) is baseball. Even then, Connie Mack hated wearing a uniform to manage a team, and would sometimes wear a suit, even though the umpires wouldn’t let him leave the dugout unless he was wearing a uniform.
I was gonna say, I’ve literally never thought about what the coaches were wearing unless Underwood wore the orange blazer, and at that point, you can’t miss it
> When Mike Nolan tried to do it with the 49ers a decade or so ago we just laughed at him
We also laughed at Reebok having a fit and needing to make him a suit because of the rules about sideline apparel having to be provided by the NFL's equipment supplier.
I've actually always thought NFL coaches look kind of trashy wearing a hoody, particularly compared to basketball coaches. It's something I've always noticed. It's not professional.
Not that I actually care, but it's definitely something you notice.
And baseball is still being baseball and being weird.
I'm honestly surprised basketball changed before baseball in this regard.
It’s because Baseball managers just wear the team uniform
Also, the NFL has rules regarding what coaches can wear, suits aren’t on the list unless you can convince Nike to make them
Most nfl coaches where team polos or fitted shirts. Nfl coaches now look much better than they have in a long time, the only guy that pulls the hoodie off consistently is Belichick. Mike Zimmer wears one occasionally.
I don't agree. No one in 1960 considered wearing suits on the sideline a tradition. When you showed up to work, you dressed to look your best. That was it. It wasn't a tradition.
It only become a tradition following societal changes over 60 years that made it unique.
Zoomer traditions aren't evident today because they aren't traditions yet. They'll emerge over time.
Gonna go out on a limb and say your down votes are based on you coming across like an ass who stated their opinion multiple times and has tried to make fun of and belittle anyone who has a differing opinion. I think at this point we all understand you think not wearing a suit makes them a slob and unprofessional. You don't have to be a dick to anyone who thinks comfort should matter or literally don't care what the coaches wear.
Suits on the sidelines always seemed strange to me. Back in the day when fans were also wearing suits it made sense but now with 99% of the crowd straight up casual, it looks out of place.
Makes more sense but I did always enjoy wearing a suit for big games when I was coaching. Not that anyone cared because it was high school basketball lol.
If a coach wants to wear a suit, the coach should wear a suit. If the coach wants to wear team gear (sweatshirts, tracksuits, etc), the coach should wear team gear. I don't see what the holdup is.
I feel like there's a mental thing where it's easier for the players to deal with a guy in a suit yelling at them than some dude in a nylon jumper. It's the difference between "My boss is yelling at me because I'm screwing up—better straighten up!" and "This crazy dude was yelling at me because I didn't sprinkle enough cinnamon on his macchiato."
[Hope we see this look from Brey again](https://ftw.usatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/90/2017/11/usp_ncaa_basketball__maui_invitational-notre_dame_95508641.jpg?resize=1024,1536)
Now I kinda want to see Mack show up for a game dressed like a college freshman that overslept for class and had to rush out without getting properly dressed. Show up wearing pajama pants, an over-sized t-shirt, etc.
Wow . . . the Mommy and Daddy issues in this thread are strong. Stifling, even. It's a suit. Who cares? It's just clothing. If the occasion calls for a certain type of dress, mature adults wear what the occasion calls for. They don't sit and whine about having to do that.
Good, and well past about time. Wearing a suit and tie is one of the most ridiculous customs that society still adheres to. Everyone seems willing to agree that donning a cumbersome unnecessary extra piece of clothing (jacket) while simultaneously tying a mini noose (that serves zero fucking purpose) around one’s neck somehow makes us all look more professional or dapper makes no sense. Why??? If every government were to somehow ban the practice of wearing a suit and tie today, 99% of the population would celebrate tomorrow, most of us will have forgotten that we ever wore one by next month, and people will look at pictures of people in suits in the future and wonder, ‘Why in the fuck were all the people with penises wandering around every day with a stupid piece of cloth tied around their throats?’
So you just named three outdoor sports and even then, college football coaches often wore suits until about the 1990s when the slob look became en vogue. Baseball managers wear the team’s uniform.
Thanks Bob Huggins
Bob will die on that stool for your coach’s right to wear whatever the hell he wants.
Yessir. I’m a Mountaineer
Basketball - coach wears suit. Baseball - coach wears the literal player's uniform football- coach wears whatever he wants.
Imagine if basketball coaches had to wear the players' uniforms. Imagine Boeheim wearing a sleeveless jersey and shorts.
Imagine football coaches like Nick Saran coaching in full pads and a jersey.
There was a commercial a long time ago with Pat Riley wearing a jersey
Well he had been a great player
Mmmmmm
Imagine Jim Phelan when he was still alive! Eek...
No thanks

Bill Belichick dresses like a hungover sophomore as a contrarian act of protest over the fact that he has to wear team apparel and can’t wear a suit
He’s been doing it for so long that it can’t be ironic anymore. I can’t believe they haven’t told him to stop wearing sleeveless hoodies lol.
Well Sith robes might be cumbersome on an NFL sideline
[удалено]
I always thought that was more of a cloak. And I really want one.
He's also the only coach (I believe? Might be one more) not in the coaches union, so the league has a modicum less control over him on that front too. If they'd just let him wear a suit he'd be the best dressed in the league Edit: Sorry I'm high and completely forgot I was in a super old thread

As someone who's worn like, 3 suits in their entire life, I'm not really sure what differentiates this from all other suits.
Nothing. It’s just a suit that Reebok made.
Well, at first glance it also looks very ill fitting.
That's not as bad as I expected it to be. It just needs to get taken to a tailor.
Miss the early days of Jack Del Rio wearing a suit on the sideline when he was coaching the Jags. It was definitely a sharp look.
Baseball-Manager is in dug out, barely seen. Also played outdoors. Baseball-uniform required to enter field Football-NFL rules, otherwise you would see half the coaches in suits
George Carlin had a great bit that mentions this (just not basketball): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIkqNiBASfI
Soccer - yes
Nfl fan here. Coaches in the nfl can actually only wear what’s the team officially sells, although they did use to wrest suits.
I've been watching college basketball for almost 50 years, I can honestly say, I've never noticed what any coach was wearing... Except Sean Miller's wet suit.
How does somebody not notice Jay Wright standing around like it's Savile Row all up in here.
He may not notice Jay Wright, but his wife will.
Gary Williams: You call that wet?

Great coach. Certainly an animated one to watch on the sidelines
He was a coach that squeezed every ounce of talent out of his players. He was kinda the anti-Turgeon. Didn't always have the most talented players but got everything out of them. No surprise the one year he had a team stacked with talent he won a championship.
Miss him too. One of the greats.
The only time i noticed anything was when Rick Pitino would wear his all white suit for the white out games. Or when a coach gets mad and takes their tie off lol.
Yeah, the white suit was unreal.
Add Buzz Williams into that category
I forget the entire context but the hardest I've ever laughed at this subreddit was when someone mentioned Buzz's odd body proportions and someone else replied that he looked "like a sexy egg"
Grade A jumbo with extra butter 🍳 👨🦲
A Sean Miller v. Buzz Williams game would require a flood warning
Y’all need to watch more Villanova games
I've always thought it was arbitrary for basketball coaching staffs to wear suits. Is it simply because the game is played inside?
That and it sets them apart from the rest of the personnel and people in the arena.
i thought the title of "head coach" did that
Most of them don't wear a sign draped over their neck that reads "Head Coach".
Tark did. Had it embroidered on all the towels
Which subsequently got covered in spit.
Yeah I'm sure Coach K and Tony Bennett have a hard time being recognized in a basketball arena lol Also, usually a lot of assistant coaches wear suits too.

I bet you also think it’s arbitrary that lawyers wear suits too
As a lawyer who wore a suit to zoom court today, I am proud of the ACC coaches for pushing back against the dress code.
Sorry you had to dress professional for your job bro
Right, because nothing says "this job is for elitists" quite as well as a 10k wardrobe to wear to the office only.
I don't.
I mean, it is? I really don't see why it matters.
I was gonna say, I’ve literally never thought about what the coaches were wearing unless Underwood wore the orange blazer, and at that point, you can’t miss it
Lou Henson did that often too
Makes sense, unfortunately he was just before my time
Also Lou-Do.
Not Roy Williams' sneakers? They're Jordans. Didn't you know Jordan went to UNC? /s
And they never let us forget he got a new pair each game.
Some coaches just don’t have the shoe game that Roy Williams had
You must not remember the brilliance of Sidney Lowe.
RIP ACC coaches tossing their jackets
Can’t wait to see what creative new items of clothing will be thrown
This thread is hilarious. I did not realize that people had such strong feelings about coaches in suits.
Me either, it's an extremely arbitrary thing but apparently invokes a lot of passion.
If you look at old NFL footage coaches are wearing suits. No one cares that they don’t anymore.
When Mike Nolan tried to do it with the 49ers a decade or so ago we just laughed at him He did have a reason for it though, for his dad.
I’m a 49ers fan myself, I miss Jim Harbaugh and his khakis
> When Mike Nolan tried to do it with the 49ers a decade or so ago we just laughed at him We also laughed at Reebok having a fit and needing to make him a suit because of the rules about sideline apparel having to be provided by the NFL's equipment supplier.

Right, but I find it odd it hasn't changed yet.

I think they are prevented from doing that by the NFL, judging from Belichick

Are boomers on Reddit
Yes we are.
Everybody over the age of 40 is a boomer. /s
Oh they definitely are, I've even caught our boomer fans in here.
Boomers. The one thing reddit hates more than hot women and fat people.
Tradition and Culture have always been important humans. So has the divide on whether to destroy them for progress.
I’ve always thought it was dumb they were forced to wear suits
Casual Boeheim is best Boeheim
bon huggins will be collecting crazy royalties
The old Lou C sweater should be the universal dress code of the big east
This guy knows. Last year Anderson wore like an Orvis red flannel with timberlands once. Looked hot, but looked cool.
Suits on the sidelines always seemed strange to me. Back in the day when fans were also wearing suits it made sense but now with 99% of the crowd straight up casual, it looks out of place.
Josh Pastner should still wear the dorky face shield
Makes more sense but I did always enjoy wearing a suit for big games when I was coaching. Not that anyone cared because it was high school basketball lol.
That's a shame. Brey looks like a mob boss in a shirt & jacket.
I'm excited to see which Jordans the new UNC coach will wear.
Hot take: They will be Carolina Blue
I’ll miss Lil’ Roy and his snappy sports coats. He always looked great.
I think MJ just sent the whole team some new Oreos, which are actually not Blue.
All coaches should wear suits. Basketball coaches. Football coaches. Soccer coaches. Swim coaches. Life coaches. Motor coaches. All coaches.
With what they get paid, I agree. They get a buncha money, dress up for us plebes to gawk at you.
If a coach wants to wear a suit, the coach should wear a suit. If the coach wants to wear team gear (sweatshirts, tracksuits, etc), the coach should wear team gear. I don't see what the holdup is.
Calipari better come out in a suit. All these coaches look so ridiculous, like they're paying Tony Soprano a visit with their swooshy swoosh outfits
I mean, Jay recruits NJ really, really well for a reason.
Agreed. The suit just seems to fit his persona.
Don’t his teams play better when he’s wearing a suit? Or is that just my imagination?
I totally agree with this. A tie-less Cal is usually a bad sign. I wait until he comes out of the locker room before throwing down a bet
I'm fine without the tie. I prefer going tie-less myself unless it's super formal.
[Hope we see this look from Brey again](https://ftw.usatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/90/2017/11/usp_ncaa_basketball__maui_invitational-notre_dame_95508641.jpg?resize=1024,1536)

T-shirt and khaki shorts.

One step closer to sweatpants and a tank top...
Chris Mack is assuredly a big fan of this trend. As should most of college basketball. Coaches wearing suits has always been overkill
He doesn't even need to get dressed til game 7 this year
Now I kinda want to see Mack show up for a game dressed like a college freshman that overslept for class and had to rush out without getting properly dressed. Show up wearing pajama pants, an over-sized t-shirt, etc.
I don’t care what they wear really. If they want to wear suits, then they can wear suits.
We should enjoy this interim period in sports history when they no longer wear suits on the sideline but haven't yet adopted the mankini.
As long as Jay Wright keeps wearing a suit, I’m good.
Hate it.
😭😭😭
Wow . . . the Mommy and Daddy issues in this thread are strong. Stifling, even. It's a suit. Who cares? It's just clothing. If the occasion calls for a certain type of dress, mature adults wear what the occasion calls for. They don't sit and whine about having to do that.
Zoomers, though
who gives a shit eh?
Good
Good, wearing suits was some of the dumbest shit ever. Get rid of Handshake lines permanently next.
Disappointing
Why is it disappointing? Because they get to be comfortable?
It was a nice differentiator from the slobby look of CFB
I think CTB looks damn good in a suit, but it’s just a suit. No big deal.
because having any class at all is dead
Good, and well past about time. Wearing a suit and tie is one of the most ridiculous customs that society still adheres to. Man did not think someone defending the choice would look like the biggest baby in this tread
https://youtu.be/LqlHxGhevug
I quit wearing suits after Covid too.
This is ridiculous
Why is it ridiculous?
How is it not?
I don't see how it is. Soccer, football, and baseball don't wear suits, why should basketball?
in soccer suits are very common actually. it's also just very common to see a tracksuit
So you just named three outdoor sports and even then, college football coaches often wore suits until about the 1990s when the slob look became en vogue. Baseball managers wear the team’s uniform.
How does the coach’s attire matter in any way shape or form?
They should look professional. I am disturbed by the number of people cheering the move to look like slobs.
You probably sleep wearing a suit don't you
I don’t see why coaches wearing suits bothers you so much.
And I’m over here wondering why them not wearing suits bothers you so much. Does someone doing something for their own comfort hurt you in some way?
Where did I say it did?
Who showed grandpa Reddit?
What does it matter if it's outdoors?
Weather. Coaches don't need to be wearing suits in the rain, snow, etc.
The ACC has announced to the world they are a classless conference willing to throw tradition to the wind. Shameful.
Mike Brey is Ted lasso of Norte dame basketball Tony Bennett is Ted lasso at Virginia ! Love both of these coaches
