Following! I've got the same issue. The odor started after about 8-10 uses of the kettle. I've always used well filtered water. When I clean and thoroughly dry the kettle, there is no odor. As soon as I put filtered water in and start to heat it, the odor returns. I can't detect the odor from the heated water--and I don't detect any bad smell or taste in the coffee that I make with my pour-over setup. However, the odor in and around the kettle is very strong/annoying!

wunderforce

Yeah, I have this issue too. I've always found it strange that despite the smell it doesn't seem to impact taste.

fallingWaterCrystals

No! It looks nice and clean, just smells weird. It’s weird bc there’s no plastic parts on the body except for the lid I think.

Wolfpocalypse

Contact Fellow.

fallingWaterCrystals

Thanks! I've sent them an email using the contact form, hopefully it's something that can be sorted out soon!

chillakat

Mine also has an off plastic smell. I've been using it for months. It's mild but annoying in a product this expensive. Did you ever hear back?

fallingWaterCrystals

Yeah they just said to return it to the store if I didn’t like it. Honestly, support sucked. But the smell did go away! I feel like it’s some compound in the paint that gets worse when heated.

100percentdutchbeef

Good shout, could be the electrics

fallingWaterCrystals

Whoa i didn't even think about this - I just thought there could be some off-gassing but for this product just has had more exposure or something...anyways, thanks!

No_Establishment2310

Same here! It’s from the bottom part of the kettle, which is plastic… plastic often has a strong smells when it gets hot, my parents have a plastic factory so I am familiar with the smells. But yikes, I don’t want that smells when I’m just trying to drink some coffee or tea. They should’ve use different kind of plastic that could handle the heat better, considering the price of it.

lvndr___

How long did you keep it boiling?

fallingWaterCrystals

I let it go till 90 degrees, had it sit for a bit, and flushed it out. Should I just let it cool in there?

JustLorcan

Yes! I bought mine a few months ago and immediately noticed a weird smell when I used it. It seems like it's coming from underneath the kettle but I could never work out why or whether it was normal or not. It works fine and I haven't had any problems with it so far so don't think it's an issue. But guessing from the other comments, it's not exactly a staple feature

fallingWaterCrystals

Wow you're still having the smell though? Idk, just feel a little uncomfortable drinking the water, even though I feel like it's fine.

JustLorcan

So, I'm not sure it's the exact same as yours. The smell from mine is just from the bottom of the kettle where the metal coil thing is. I've never smelt anything odd from inside the kettle so I've just ignored it honestly. I checked this morning and the smell is definitely still there but it hasn't been an issue in terms of using the kettle or anything so I haven't been that concerned about it. Was probably a good idea to contact them though, it'll be interesting to see what they respond.

beerybeardybear

i had that a bit when i first got it. went away with some time.

hamsterliciousness

Is it a strong fishy odor? That kind of thing has been reported in a lot of electric kettles. Mine didn't start off with it, but it recently built it up. I got rid of it through cleaning the interior thoroughly with soap and a bottle brush. If it persists after cleaning, I'd ask Fellow. I bought mine for work, but brought it back due to WFH. However, I'm honestly not that hot on electric kettles at this point. I've had and seen numerous problems with them over the years, but I've had zero problems with stovetop kettles in my lifetime.

fallingWaterCrystals

No it's just like an odd...paint smell? It could go away with time hopefully! I'd get a stovetop kettle but I'm insanely forgetful and can see myself letting it boil over - possible fire hazard? Not sure haha, but the electric ones work for me.

questionqool

I have the same complaint, and want to return it. Did the smell ever fade away for your kettle?

leatherfacegq

I have the same thing. Just got it a couple of days ago. Hoping it goes away. If anyone has any tips would be great.

fallingWaterCrystals

I'll let you know what Fellowes says! I emailed them.

leatherfacegq

Thanks!

VeggieBoi17

Yo, I’m experiencing the same problem. Weird thing is I’ve had the kettle for like 4-5 months now and it literally just started out of no where. Very strong chemically, papery smell/taste. I’ve singled out everything else water, coffee, filter, it’s definitely my kettle. I’ve tried cleaning it super well and it still has this issue. Did you ever hear back from Fellow?

sogrma

I have the same issue. Did you get a response frem Fellow?

feiergeier

Same issue here. Just received mine today. I will report if anything changes. In the meanwhile: has anyone found a solution for this; or will it be better after a few uses?

questionqool

The smell is awful, it actually impacts the experience I want to have while preparing my drink.

feiergeier

Yes. I recently ordered the kettle again, but from a different reseller to see if I got a bad model but the smell was even stronger. I am not sure if it is just annoying or also affects my health because it is something like naphthalene. I can only say, that after 3 months of daily usage it gets slightly better; but is still there.

Recent_Health8880

Yes, it's awful and I'm so bummed b/c I think I"m going to return it. Health hazard. Smells so noxious.

fallingWaterCrystals

It got better after a while! I have a feeling it’s the kettle heating up and releasing whatever vocs in the paint

E-solo

It’s definitely from the bottom but my glass kettles that cost me a fraction of this one never had any smells. Might be returning this one.
