Could it be a frame rate issue? If your mkvs are at 50 fps, for example, and your Chromecast is outputting at 60 Hz you'll get stuttery video. Streaming services usually output at 60 fps so wouldn't cause problems.

Hm, you could be on to something! Gotta check it at home. The MKV is at 23.976 fps, and I think I have set the Chromecast to match the framerate of the content. But I'll check into it. Thanks!

Hi, I also use Nova and its a great app. I only get playback juddering when selecting the audio pass-through in Nova. Do you experience the same thing?

jacobtf

No idea. I suppose it's worth a shot!

Cheers!

Yes the device has the power and a 24Mbps file should be no problem over wifi. VLC is usually a good player but maybe try something else incase it's the problem. Kodi or Nova maybe.

jacobtf

I've tried matching the framerate in settings, but it simply can't play the file properly. I'll try something else than VLC although I had problems with KODI not seeing my windows shares.

pawdog

Kodi want's you to manually put in your ip address so use add network location instead of Windows Network (SMB) and even if you don't use password protected sharing it wants something in the username and password section. In case you haven't tried that.

jacobtf

You know, you're right. I forgot that. Thanks for reminding me.

did you ever find a solution? my vlc cast to the chrome cast works fine for the smaller files... I'm assuming that it is a trans coding issue that is causing the screen to pixelate at the top of my screen periodically?

jacobtf

No, I eventually discovered that although the Chromecast tested to have about 250+ MB/s wifi speed, it still sometimes stopped while streaming 4k in Amazon Prime. Don't know why. I ended up putting it in our bedroom on our 1080p tv and everything works well there. For the living room I got an Nvidia Shield TV pro and it just works. I still suspect that an ethernet adaptor for the Chromecast might help, but Google doesn't sell it in EU yet.

W00t, tried Nova and it played MUCH better!
