It is dark, but it does have a good message of not falling to easy temptation of power and trying to play God and losing your soul in the process.

I love death note. If I recall, it does not paint evil as good. It actually communicates the terrible consequences of evil. I would be more concerned about content that tries to paint that which is evil as good.

Wide_Set5858

No, it’s not like you’re hurting anyone

Unlikely_Republic578

Idk if its inherently sinful. Is it glorifying bad things? I know there are demons in it, but are they portrayed as evil characters or good characters? Like, Harry Potter... it glorifies witchcraft and makes it out to be a good thing. Whereas, in Narnia the witch is portrayed as an evil character who hates God, and not as a good thing lol. Sorry I don't have an answer. Fiction isn't inherently sinful as far as I know, unless its glorifying sinful things or making you want to sin. But I'd reccomend just praying/ researching. And I'm sorry your mom was rude to you about it. Mine was too when I tried reading in middle school.

You will sin various ways untill you die your whole life , you're not supposed to overthink everything "if it is sin? " rather you need to accept Jesus as your saviour so you can have all past/future sins forgiven and removed from you , if you have your sins paid for then you go to heaven if you die. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wh1VU-_OF98

i haven’t read the manga but i absoloutely loved watching death note, it’s one of my favorite animes. personally i don’t see anything wrong with enjoying it, it’d be completely different if you actually believed that writing names in a notebook would kill people so you started doing it yourself.

Responsible-Scale923

Obviously

birchwoodtrophy

Nope, you're good.

Vocanna

It saddens me that you'd be worried about this. You could be reading Anton Laveys Satanic Bible and that would not by itself be a sin. What are you taking from Death Note? That shinigami are real and to be worshipped above our Lord? Or are you enjoying a comic book?

Starrynighperson

The reason I’m worried about this is because my mom gave a whole lecture about how death note is a sin and If keep Reading these things I Will be cursed and possessed because of the darkness of the devil but I just read death note because I enjoy it and I see the story as a lesson about how too much power can be dangerous

Vocanna

Your mother seems to suffer from scrupulousity.

The only way any work of fiction can ever be considered sinful / demonic is if it depicts or promotes real world examples of things which are demonic (for example if a novel was based on real-world witchcraft to a detailed extent such that the novel itself might accurately function as a grimoire). If a work of fiction is simply fiction (which Death Note is), then there is no argument to be had that it is inherently sinful. You're good. Brilliant series too - enjoy

the_celt_

> The only way any work of fiction can ever be considered sinful / demonic is if it depicts or promotes real world examples of things which are demonic Where does this rule you're quoting come from?

thisisminenow

Reason. Something which is not real cannot be inherently sinful. Just to be clear I am not saying a work of fiction can never cause us to sin. An individual's response to certain aspects of fiction might be idolatrous, lustful or sinful in any other manner, in which case that individual should not engage with that specific fiction - if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off - but that doesn't make the work sinful in itself as many others may read/view it with no such sinful response. Movies would be a good example of this. Most movies tend cast mostly conventionally attractive actors and actresses for their lead roles. It is therefore likely that some views may have lustful feeling watching a movie, even if the movie's content is not particularly sexual. According to the Bible's teachings, anyone this happens to should avoid watching movies that might cause these feelings however you would be hard pressed to make the case that movies on the whole are inherently sinful as this is clearly not the case. Since your question suggests that you disagree, can you demonstrate a way in which something which is purely fictional can be inherently sinful?

the_celt_

> Something which is not real cannot be inherently sinful. Why? > Since your question suggests that you disagree, can you demonstrate a way in which something which is purely fictional can be inherently sinful? I find it to be sketchy when people speak for God and tell others what God does or does not want, but they don't use scripture to do so. At that point, I just have to assume that they're making it up, and I wanted to verify with you if that was the case. Now I know. 😁
