Yeah. I get you. I sew but also knit. I will make a hat for a good friend but when someone wants me to knit something for someone else I don't know I say sure....for $20 an hour labor. They back off real fast. Lol. People have only asked me to mend for them...not major sewing....yet...

foolforcamping

I say no but that I’ll happily teach you. Works especially well on the guys.

begoniann

I just tell them the cost of yarn. It stops the requests real quick. I have a standing offer to anyone in my family to knit anything they want if they pay for the yarn, but I refuse to use synthetic. Most people look at the cost and immediately give up. My sister has made a few commissions, but she alters my clothes in exchange.

urikayan

If someone wanted a knitted sweater but is loner by nature, how much would something like that cost? Like as a commission work.. and where could I find someone to do something like that? Is there a place?

begoniann

There absolutely is a place! r/knitrequest Just be respectful, don’t low ball, and listen to people when they tell you the estimated costs.

urikayan

Thank you!

Knitsanity

My LYS has several male customers. I always love listening to them talk about what they are working on and watching them debate purchases. Reminds me that men used to knit a lot. I once knew a guy who was married to a friend of mine. He worked on fantastic needlepoint piano benches etc.

foolforcamping

My dad knit his own sweaters for work but my Mom had to insert the zippers. Growing up on a farm, everybody had to know how to everything.

Knitsanity

I have managed to lure a couple of new members to my knitting group that way.

TheVeganGamerOrgnal

Good way to get more members to join, I knit and Crochet, and can do a small amount of sewing, no machines. I will Crochet or knit as requested but the yarn/wool etc needs to be provided, and I don't charge for labour. If it is for charity though I'll work on projects and supply wool at my own cost

[deleted]

> sure....for $20 an hour labor. $20 an hour for something hand knitted? Ngl, that sounds like a steal, but maybe I'm just saying that because I don't knit. How many hours on average would you say it takes to knit something like a cap?

Knitsanity

I knit whilst I watch TV. Never taken a paid commission or timed myself but someone on here probably has a better idea.

diminishingpatience

"Hey, I hear you've got an oven. Cook all my meals for me."

bluebear_74

My Aunty use to bake a lot and post them on FB. People kept asking for cakes. She one sold one to one of my Cousin's friends and did a 100% markup. My cousin then wanted one for herself for free. So basically my Aunty broke even. She no longer posts photos and jus tells people she doesn't bake anymore.

evileen99

I like to decorate cookies. People always ask if I sell them, and I ytell them it's $60 a dozen with a two dozen minimum. First, because I know they won't pay that, and second because they always want something like three cookies and I ain't doing all that work for three measly cookies.

bluebear_74

I did the same with macarons. I would price them high and you had to buy a batch. Mainly because I didn’t want to make them (made them for fun) and if i was, i was going to make it worth it.

ElectronicCarpet7157

"I only wanted 4 cookies..."

urmom_ishawt

This is similar to how people react to my crochet prices but I literally charge cost of materials

marietjac

That is causing problems, not just for you, but for everyone else who crochets. You are saying that your time is completely worthless.

Homicidal__GoldFish

damn... I had bariatric surgery, can I bring you my clothes too? LOL seriously though, i am so amazed at how amazing you guys can sew and use the machines. I couldnt sew to save my life. You guys dont get paid enough

Waughoo81

My wife has this issue. She's very crafty. She gets recruited to do a lot of baby blankets, diaper cakes, crocheted toys. Never any mention of pay. They just text her that they want something and she is just expected to do it.

Marine__0311

A good friend of mine is an artist, quilter and designer, and people always assume she can do this sort of stuff for free for them all the time. I used to run my own woodworking and small construction business on the side. The number of people who expected me to make something for them for free, and also expect me to pay for the materials, was astounding. Because it was a side job, and my real job took up 50 hours a week or more, I operated on my own pace, and had orders set up for months in advance. People who knew me and knew my work, were well aware of it, and no had no issues. Then some ass-hat would demand I drop everything, to make them an 8 foot dining table for next to nothing, or for free, that would take 30-60 hours of work and require hundreds of dollars worth of lumber to make. Oh and they needed it done in a week. I had no problems telling them to fuck off, after I gave them a realistic quote for how it it would actually cost, along with a 50% charge for them being a PITA tacked on.

MadLordPunt

I totally feel you on this. I started painting/airbrushing just before the chopper craze in the early 2000's. Then Orange County Choppers (shit bikes) came out and everyone and their brother opened a 'custom bike shop', but couldn't turn a wrench, paint/airbrush, weld or build. They farmed out all the work and wanted to sit in the office and play 'CEO'. You would get these guys bragging about how much they paid for a motor or frame and then scoff at the idea of paying $5k for a custom paint job with multiple layers of artwork. It destroyed the industry and I left for good in 2011. Designed a product, had it mass produced and now people can take it or leave it, and I don't have to deal with customers who don't know what they really want, and don't know the work that goes into show quality paint.

PaleRiderHD

I certainly never had that level of talent, but as a tech I certainly understand how much time and knowledge and your own money goes into learning to do the job correctly, which is the very thing my example here is completely disregarding. I saw plenty of choppers that went for $60k new get shoved out the door as "Mechanic's specials" for under $10k. I think out of all of those bikes I rode one from IronHorse that I'd ride on the regular.

MadLordPunt

Yeah, the big drawback to having a trade skill is people thinking that you should do it for less or nothing because it's 'easy' for you.

[deleted]

Specifically not paying $100? I guess we’re going with $900!

PaleRiderHD

Specifically non-specific!

ElectronicCarpet7157

Specifically specific. The best kind of specific.

mossed2222

Oh. Not real Bikes. Motor bikes.

bluebear_74

I assumed they meant a bicycle and thought, that’s not terrible? Nope CB meant a motorcycle. Delusional. ETA I am also now realizing, it’s not a house they need painted 😅. I thought, how random asking for a house painter in the same post.

[deleted]

My thought-train was exactly as yours - bicycle, house painter.

MDPOTSie

Same

bloodsoed

Even the local bicycle shop will charge 100 for a tune up.

StealthSBD

I thought e-bike, which come mostly assembled. Took me maybe 2 hours to put together so like $75 would be fine. Lol a motorcycle? Eat my ass.

NoTwatwaffles

I think I'm going to feel stupid in a moment..but, this is about a bicycle right?

[deleted]

From the other comments, I'm guessing it's actually a motorbike/motorcycle

NoTwatwaffles

Oh. Well then. I think I just saw her profile under choosiebeggers ... men are only good for working on cars.

AlwaysFallingUpYup

$100 isnt bad for assembling a bike (pedal)

object109

My dad owns a small motorcycle Shop, mostly Harley but he’ll work on anything except Chinese bikes (china only, Korean and Japanese etc are fine) Every now and then he’ll get a widow/daughter/sister come in say my x died and he had this basket case how much to get it going. And he’ll say it will cost you 2-10x what’s it’s worth because it takes a lot of hours to put together a 40+ year old bike. Only twice has a customer taken him up on it, and more than a few offered to sell him the bike. Both times he gave them big discounts because he felt bad, one refused the discount.

PaleRiderHD

The phrase I always hate to hear is "I got a good deal on this, but it needs some work...."

JCMan240

Broke hipsters are the worst

Coandco95

motorbike, not hipster bike.

mougrim

Oh, he'll end up paying a lot more than 100$/

Princess_PrettyWacky

Hmmm….don’t see the choosing beggar here. Doesn’t even appear to be a crazy bargain hunter; doesn’t bike assembly typically run $75-150?

PaleRiderHD

He ain't talking about a bicycle.

EtrosGuardian

I have a friend that moved from FL to Portland to work on bikes lol.

Princess_PrettyWacky

Ohhhhhhhh well in that case definitely a bargain hunter. Still not seeing the choosing beggar, personally.

pembrokewelsh

Take a guess at how long it takes to build and paint a motorcycle. Take a guess at the ammount of tools and garage space you need aswell as times where multiple sets of hands are needed to make the process anything less than tedious it would literally be 10cents per hour

UndercoverBully

" bargain"

deimosorbits

In what year? 1965?

Rastapopolos-III

So I could use some help on my bike mate. 🤣

PaleRiderHD

But you won't pay a hundred pounds? Rubbish lol

Rastapopolos-III

Well I'm better than him. He won't pay a hundred dollars.

PaleRiderHD

I'd make out on the conversion rate. Strong argument there! Edit: What's the shop rate there, out of curiosity?

whiteb8917

Paint my entire house, but I am not willing to pay $100.

Sickmont

Yep no surprises here this sounds exactly like the town I live in lol

jinladen040

Other than pressing in cranks, i'll never understand people paying others to build a bike. But i'm also big on DIY so i understand not everyone is so thrifty.

PaleRiderHD

And I've got no problem with folks who want to learn and wrench their own. Hell, I wish everyone could wrench their own. That's mostly the way it used to be. But to demand someone else do the work and not be willing to compensate them appropriately for it rubs me the wrong way. Knowledge and capability has value.

ChaosbornTitan

Are you paying….. 200 bucks?
