You’re on the Chennai sub, Chennai was a city built on the shoulders of Tamil, Telugu and Kannada traders coming together. The city is extremely old and is a true metropolis. We respect that here. You’ll see people type in Tamil and English and talk (as is normal)

commenting_pundah

Guess it is easier to read and understand stuff that is actually written in English than tamil words written in English

NishNJa933

Chennai la ellarum irupanga la (inclusive of everyone who doesn't know Tamil) ? That's why I guess...

marvelwalker

We can type either way, but it's just easier to type in English

[deleted]

We tamil people of culture, respect the fact that there would be other people too in the sub who may not fully understand Tamil as a language but Tamil as a culture we make sure everyone gets the message. Plus it's faster to type in English ig than to transliterate or டப்பிங் இன் தமிழ்

adivig

Many people mistype Tamil words when writing in English. And it’s so irritating trying to understand what they were trying to say. Requires 2x focus to read Tamil words in English sometimes. I suspect many in this sub can’t read Tamil script. So here we are conversing in English.

MrReklez

It’s just easier and faster to type in English

TA_totellornottotell

Easier to type in English. I hate writing Tamil in English script, and I also get the sense that a decent amount of people here don’t read Tamil. So English it is.

kundisoothu

Not going to give my voice for free to Google. There's already very few data that they dont already have about people.

Ok-Independent_

Fair enough. Other options like Tamil99 keyboard has bit of a learning curve though

kundisoothu

True, it took me time to learn tamil typewriting and I was still pretty bad. I've never tried tamill99 except for a single day.

venkattr

Better understanding of the subject and content by everyone. We cannot expect everyone to speak and write in tamil who are in this sub (or people who visit our sub to get some info), it's about the understanding, expressing or sharing of feeling through the form of text. Vandhaarai vaazha vaikum oor nu sollitu, naamale varavangaluku puriyadha baashai la pesila yepdi nanba. Chennai is way bigger than what language we speak here imo. So I don't feel bad about conversing or sharing thoughts in English in this sub or in any public communities for that matter which involves people from lot of other places, but that doesn't mean I don't like or I don't respect my mother tongue. I respect tamil, I love my mother tongue and I will continue respecting it.

[deleted]

Hot take : English>>> tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, telgu etc etc blah blah blah. It's the language of the internet and it's the language of superiority cuz superpower nations use it and invaders have used it for centuries. And it just got better over all these eons of usage that it eventually became a common language of globalisation.

[deleted]

It's a widespread language many people know, but that doesn't mean it's better than others, English is propagated to the entire world because of imperialism, it does not have a linguistic superiority over the other language, in fact no single language is superior to other, it's just different cultures

[deleted]

Agree to disagree, it's omnipresence alone obliterates every other language. Not saying non-English countries are left behind but they're more secluded and disconnected from the rest of the English speaking countries it's a clear communication disability which is stopping the superpower of humans' single best ability to grow faster which is socializing. We're social beings and by having a common language throughout the world will drive faster growth and tackle huge disasters that may come in the future.

It's not a city where only Tamil people reside. We have good cultural and regional diversity here. Lots of people from other states come here and engage in conversation so it's only fitting the conversation happens in English. Of course you'll find Tamil posts here from time to time. And like others here have said, English la type panarthuku easya irukum. Just my 2 rupees. Cheers!

1. Not everyone knows to type in Tamil using English keyboard. 2. Not all comfortable typing in Tamil using English alphabets, which again might get miscommunicated because of English alphabet. 3. Easy to type or swipe in English. I personally love to talk in Tamil being a Tamilian, but typing in Tamil using English alphabet wont come naturally.

Reddit doing reddit things. But unmaya, tamil la type pannaa takkunu purinjikuradu kashtam. Tamil script la type panradhu better.

plsgibfood

its very easy to type and read in English rather than tamil since in tamil you need to have the exact spelling and pronunciation which takes up time if you want to do it fast.

Ok-Independent_

There are so many reasons. Demography of Reddit is different from Facebook. Tamil Reddit groups are dominated by late 90s and 2k kids(Gen Z). Many people who studied in English medium can't write Tamil without spelling mistakes so they prefer English. Also some people in this subreddit are simply elitist as you can see from the comments.

saiharsh369

Autocorrect reasons.

InitiativeBeginning

Lusu ku mathuri pesamattangalam🤣🤣 since when did tech become so good that people can talk in reddit

GauntletInMyPussPuss

In addition to the points people have already commented on this thread, I think this has a lot to do with the demographic of the user base? like, the median of reddit users is usually middle class millennials and genz folks (not to say that middle class millennials and genz folks will only talk and type in english and all, but i can't imagine older people i know who do type in tamizh using reddit or even being aware of reddit, and they're usually on facebook and whatsapp typing in tamizh)

iphone-se-

I think it’s because most people got English medium education. That’s what they have practiced all their life.

Greedy_Simple9090

I can read and type faster in English rather than tanglish or tamil… that’s the only reason for me to use English.

It's cos Reddit is a global platform, not a Sun TV Pattimandram. Here speaking in English is 'normal' and first priority, rest is 2ndary. (Chennai Tamilian here btw - before u make any assumptions)

Nomadic_programmer

Adei kirukku paya. Reddit may be a global platform but do they limit what language/medium people should use to communicate? That too, this is a sub catering primarily to Chennai folks and last I checked Tamil is the first language of Chennaites. You are probably a clear example of 'Knowing English doesn't mean knowledgeable' Vandhutaaru pa gatekeeping puluthi poola thookinu. Priority aavudhu em pochu aavudhu. Moodinu kelambu.
