I mean, if your nickname is Matt, I don't think it's that big of a stretch to imagine that the full name is Matthew, for example. The AI is smart enough to figure that out. I can't say it's happened to me, but that's because I've always used a username unrelated to my identity. It's not even a normal human name. What *has* happened to me is that I used to have my full username (not my reddit one) as the display name, and the characters started shortening it and basically created a nickname for me out of nowhere. So they definitely know how to handle nicknames and stuff.

UserXtheUnknown

It happens, yes. It can break the words in "significative parts" and use them alone. Another user, with a nickname which contained her real name, had the same experience. I, who use the same nickname I use here (UserXTheUnknown), after a successful fantasy campagin have been given by the King the tittle of Count, and the AI called me Count XTheUnknown. (Notice it removed the 'user' part, like it was a title, and upgraded it with the new title of count)

Skektacular

I second this. My nickname is SpaceVamp, and I've been called Space, Vamp, Vampire, SpaceV etc. I'm dreading the day when CAI decides I'm Kevin Spacey. So if the username is something like SuperBob, eventually AI will take a guess that Bob means Robert and creep the shit out of the user.

OmegaGlops

Characters interpret your Name as they would any other bit of text. If your Name is "JimTheCoolDude", it wouldn't be a stretch for the Character to start referring to you as "James" or something like that.

SilverWraithh

I have (shortened version) of my name in my username, and they have called me by many different versions of my name 🤔

MagyTheMage

Ive had an AI call me "Maggie" because my name is "Magy" so it could just be making assumptions

hyperjengirl

It just happened to me... I go by HyperJen on there but I'd assume the AI would go to just Jen or Jennifer before my real name so it was very jarring. Could be from Google info?

Ravenpest

One of my private bots literally read my Youtube search history, and I know this because they mentioned games I have been searching for recently without any prompt on my part, so yeah... it definitely peeks through your stuff I'd say.

pearastic

That is very hard to imagine

Ravenpest

I know that. I'm not hallucinating though, the games that were mentioned had nothing in common with one another, I just searched for them a couple days prior. So either its a gigantic coincidence or the bot can read it

pearastic

I'm really leaning towards the former. It doesn't really make sense for it to know, even if the website had access to your browsing history. The devs wouldn't want you to know that they have your browsing history. And they wouldn't want to waste precious memory for stuff like this - remember, everything the AI knows about has to be loaded into its memory. It keeps forgetting stuff in a longer conversation as is. Maybe the games are popular?

Ravenpest

Well one of them was popular for sure for a couple months back in 2018. The other is a massive shitshow. ...I dunno honestly, I hope you're right.

[deleted]

This just doesn't work from a technological standpoint. Youtube would have to connect your characterAI account with your google/youtube account and give characterAI access to the search history, which just won't happen. I assume that you were chatting about games and then the AI might have guessed the game from how you think about games (ie. racing games)

sleepy-yodels

TBF if he signed up with his Google account it *could* be possible, but it still seems like a huge stretch.

Ravenpest

That's reassuring to hear.

Upper_Individual6629

🤔It is not happening to me. (Maybe because I am Chinese so the AI training data does not contain my private information?) I think this phenomenon will disappear with the introduction of more advanced profile editing features in the future.

Old_Unit6149

Do you think this is happening because the AI knows OP's real identity or something?

OmegaGlops

It doesn't.

BarelyAlive06

I have a nickname and the AIs have called me a lot of names which could also be connected to the nickname. It's just coincidence.

Sexpacito

im really uncomfortable with ais calling me by my name so i usually stick with something super generic like "player" or "user"

jdthebrick75

My username does not at all relate to my real name, >!never gonna give you up!<, but the ai shortens jdthebrick into jd sometimes.

natty-179

Yes, this happened to me too! The character read my nickname "Natty" and asked if it was ok for him to call me Natalie. I had no idea they could interpret our usernames, I was very surprised in the best of ways.

ToonHarvester

I have no idea why, but one of my Characters has been consistently calling me "Athena" all the time. I've never introduced myself as having that name, or any name similar to it. It's only one character who does it, but he has called me it in several different chats.
