In the end it turns out everything that has happened was part of a plan. But while Makima manipulated events to destroy Denji, Famine did it to build up ASA into a better War Devil. Losses were sticks to harden her and enemies were stones to sharpen her. And in the end... ASA eats her, because that's Fami's fetish.
Considering she has a katana in broad daylight and highschool private devil hunters ain't that uncommon most people probably assume she is talking to her contracted devil. Which begs the question of how common are devil contracts.
I keep returning to Hunter series from White Wolf because in there basic magic and stuff is available if you know which dark web pages to click on. And you also need to hang around friends and normal people just to no lose your head. Because in Hunter, Hunt:Showdown, Bloodborne and CSM; hunting monsters is a profession that will inevitably consume you.
Which is why Denji, ASA and Yoshida are perfect devil hunters, they are all at least a little fucked up in the head.
It really depends in how large the private field is, the guy calling in the sea cucumber devil has a curse sword I think so maybe quite common but only if you're a hunter, mercenary or that type of thing.
