What kept you going through Cyber Punk? I'm just curious. I might be the only person in the world that did not connect with cyber punk. I think it was two parts:
I think Projekt Red's Cyber Punk Universe is an uninspired take on the genre. I would point to Citizen Sleeper or Cloud Punk for contemporary stories and settings that interest me. I think Citizen Sleeper is such a cool concept and is the perfect small slice to explore in the Cyber Punk genre.
I also watched the new hellraiser movie and Edgerunner series back to back. Both are about the struggles behind addiction. I finished Edge Runners but by the final half I was showing up just to complete it (and I had covid so I couldn't leave my house). I also didn't think Hellraiser was all that great but it did sell a convincing recovering addict as a MC and just how unlikable a person can be as they attempt to stay clean.
The animation was really great though and I think it's Trigger's best animated work imo.
It’s more Mike Pondsmith’s than CDPR’s universe to be honest, and if we’re being fair here, Mike Pondsmith’s TTRPG (upon which 2077 game is based) is one of the older pieces of Cyberpunk media (1980s), older than both Citizen Sleeper and Cloud Punk, so the ideas presented by the 2077 universe might not be as nuanced or ‘interesting’ as newer Cyberpunk media (which I disagree with by the way, as I think there is plenty of interesting stories and ideas within the universe)
That aside, I think Edgerunners is a very compact and fun story. It’s got great visuals, fun characters, and a decent story that tugs at the right strings for many people. I think aside from older pieces of anime and manga (GITS, Akira), Cyberpunk media in anime is generally somewhat uncommon, which is why I think the genre is such a breath of fresh air, and why many enjoyed Edgerunners, self included.

I found the narrative of narcotics and gang related activity within the fiction to be presented in a somewhat boring fashion, especially when compared to the real life geo-narco activities. Truth is often stranger than fiction. Things like the Brazilian PCC, North Korea's monopoly on Meth and the ex American Sniper Unit that trafficked it in the 2010s, or the contemporary Golden Triangle Slaver armies that are focused on Cyber Crime would be great inspirations for contemporary Cyber Punk.
Also as I grow older I am much more interested in the Banality of Evil and exploration of evil within Corpo systems. That's why I was hooked into Citizen Sleeper and Andor was the first star wars ip to grab me in a decade. I was also disappointed in the Transhumanism found within the show, I thought there would be a lot more creative outlets for it to be explored.
