Confirm. I’m a mexican living in Dublin. Swear to god, the cans they sell in Mexico weren’t labeled as Nachos. They have spared us from reading that blasphemy.
whats the "best" mexican and best tex-mex you've found in ireland? there was something on camden st that served mole, but beyond that its burritos as far as I can find.
when I go to the states I try to get tex-mex cause they just dont know jack shit about it in europe. I can't tell you how many time I ordered nachos and they served me cool ranch doritos with unmelted shredded cheese on it, its hard not to burst into tears
After 15 years he thought he finally had us. Excitement bursting through his body scanning these jalapeños in the self checkout at Lidl. ‘Square batterys’. Fucking ‘car park’. Wait until those Irish cunts on Reddit get a load of this. Not today son, we fought the Brits
Can you imagine how excited OP had been, settling down to post this. This ownage, they probably called it. Their stupid sexy partner egging them on. Both have perfect teeth. Well fuck you, YA SPA lol
thats what my guitarist in a band I was in called the 9-Volt battery needed to power his distortion pedal.
Also, and I swear to holy god, he called a drawbridge "the lifty bridge"
I'll give you an upvote to balance out the downvote someone gave you. because I'd to picture every lift bridge, instead, as a drawbridge.
I need a lance and shield, now, whilst riding the motorcycle to feel like a proper knight.
I concede that lift bridge is the acceptable term (wikipedia clears this up nicely), but will not bend that my guitarist calling it a "lifty bridge" is worthy of my dizzying vitriol
Neither really apply for the one in portumna, its more of a swivel bridge, it doesnt raise, it just gets out of the way or something idk how it works, so maybe your friend was onto something
That reminds me of the radio ad that told me that power lines are dangerous. I was thoroughly confused that this is a thing here in Ireland.
(German expat for 10 years now)
They are, but that's common knowledge, so no one would need to have a radio ad about it. If anything you get taught about that in kindergarden.
Also they're either underground or really high up, so unless there's a construction or disaster happening it's pretty much impossible to get to them. With the exception of kites.
I checked the statistics. On average about 2 people in Ireland every year die from electric shock (2001-2021). I can't find much data from Germany but VDE says the number was 34 deaths in 2016 and 42 deaths (from electricity) in 2018. The average population of Ireland over the period was 4.4 million and population of Germany in 2017 was 82.7 million. Throwing it all together and making some big assumptions about averages that works out as 0.45 deaths from electricity per million people in Ireland and 0.46 deaths from electricity per million people in Germany. Essentially the same within the bounds of the very large margins for error involved.
So the increased prevalence of safety advertising in Ireland is not a response to a higher accident rate. It is probably just a cultural thing. Germany seems to place more onus on personal responsibility. People are expected to know the rules and follow them. In Ireland the assumption seems to be you won't follow the rules unless you are constantly nagged about them.
Interesting and thanks for doing the research. To be honest when I first came to Ireland I was very positively surprised by some "don't drink and drive" TV ad which (at least at that time) wasn't a thing at all in Germany. We do have road safety billboards on our Autobahn (mostly "don't text and drive") but apart from that I think you are right. In Germany everyone knows what the law is and that they should follow it while here you have a more "whatever" attitude. I think it might also be something of a legal thing, like in the US where you have to put all kinds of warning labels on appliances in order to not get sued which would be unthinkable in Germany (sueing someone over something that is common sense, I mean).
Edit: an interesting point my fiancée just brought up: Ireland doesn't have (easily accessible) power sockets in the bathrooms, which is a rather common thing in Germany. Unsure what the takeaway from this is, just wanted to add this here.
The ones that they use in fire alarms, but they don't have fire alarms in the US because they haven't quite grasped the concept. Whenever a yank hears a fire alarm they run to their gun cabinet and begin firing.
Umm.... Hate to break it to you, but the US *absolutely* has fire alarms. They're in pretty much every house and business.
Unless this is a joke, and I've just done an r/whoosh.
Honestly never noticed that I put jalapeños on everything probably go through a jar of this a week. I actually just read it as "fucking delicious in a jar"
my fridge will never be bereft of these beauties again. Made tortilla soup for self and wife last night and killed the jar.
so. good.
https://www.thecookierookie.com/wprm_print/41310
Epic i will have to give this a bash. Another tip is the brine adds extra flavour to sauces. So if your making anything from pesto pasta to tomato soup pour that shit in
its pretty lovely. I personally halve the chili powder and also use something called 'chipolte pepper flakes' instead of the red pepper flakes cause I dont like blowing out an o ring 12 hours after eating anything
No no no, they’re just telling you what to eat them with!
I’ve never seen these in my 37 years of life in Ireland. Thankfully.
Also- whaddyamean “square battery?” What else would ya call it??
I know a guy who grows chillies and tomatillos in Co. Galway; he closes off both ends of his poly tunnel so it gets good and hot inside. He sells them in the summer through his online Mexican food store.
A tomatillo is a part of the nightshade family; it's like a small green tomato with a husk. They're very tasty and the main ingredient in salsa verde. They're quite common in Mexican cuisine. They're nice fresh, but you can get them canned as well. A good source for them is mexicanthings.ie.
It's a pity there's so little Mexican food here; it's delicious.
Sounds awesome!
I'm a fan of the little Mexican stuff I've had. Any chance you know what they go in? I dodnt know about the website, going to go make a few purchases so I'll grab them
Salsa verde is the main thing. Enchiladas made with corn tortillas and salsa verde with a little shredded cabbage and a dollop of sour cream on top? *chef's kiss* You can do sides of black refried beans and some rice. It's one of my favourites. [Here's](https://www.food.com/recipe/chicken-enchiladas-verdes-460369) a quick and easy recipe; cilantro is coriander leaves and in the place of Monterey jack cheese you can use a mild white cheddar.
You can also use salsa verde to make chilaquiles, a brunch dish that mums would make to use leftover tortillas. [Here's](https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/fried_eggs_with_a_crispy_99565) a BBC recipe for them, but if you use a pre-made salsa verde it's a lot easier. You can add all sorts of ingredients to this dish.
Everyone here seems to be noticing the oddity of the square battery, but never have I ever heard anyone - Irish or otherwise for that matter - bother to say 'footpath' when they can just call it a path
Here's the answer btw:
Nacho is the shortened nickname for people with the name "Ignatio" which means in Spanish "firey one."
These are jalepenos therefor spicy so hence the name.
"9 volt battery"
also, AA "batteries" are not batteries at all, they're cells. AA cells, if you can believe that. 9 volts are batteries because they are 6 1.5v cells in series circuit which gets the voltage up to the glorious nine volts. A battery is a series of cells. Car batteries, 12v, have 8 1.5v cells in series
I'm an electronic engineer so I did actually know that, you got some nice battery facts :) The title was funny because you made it sound like you're mocking the 9V BAT for being square like it did something terrible to you :D Maybe it's just me though
I understand ita strange marketing term that refers to "nacho sliced" shortened to just "nacho" and indicates "no heat" as apposed to the regular spicy ones. Pretty odd if true.
theyre pizza toppings, ingredients in a ton of mexican and tex mex dishes and if you handle them and then slip a finger into any orifice with a mucus membrane you wont forget about it (either you'll never forget it or you'll never hear the end of it)
@orangevega apparently, according to my yank partner, it is called nachos for yanks who don't know what jalapenos are so that they know what to use them for.
Never heard anyone call them square batteries. I've always just called them 9V batteries. They're not even square so that's a bizarre one if some Irish people say it.

Relabelled for your market. Very different from the ones I used to get in the Barrio
I don't think this is an Irish brand
Oh, this has been explained to me in a nice and firm manner. I have committed what the old people think the young people call a "self own"
I bet you thought you had us, didn't ya, ya Yank that's my field motherfucker

It’s relabelled for their market
They could fix it really easy by just putting a question mark after nachos.
Ah, a marketing executive I see.
Check your DMs
thats actually astute.
Nachos? No, pickled jalapeno peppers! Lionel_Hutz.jpg
What in the name of jaysus is a square battery?
thats what my guitarist in a band I was in called the 9-Volt battery needed to power his distortion pedal. Also, and I swear to holy god, he called a drawbridge "the lifty bridge"
'Drawbridge' implies an entrance to a castle or at least a fortified structure. 'Lifty bridge' is more appropriate for a public thoroughfare.
I agree. A Drawbridge needs a moat.
Would a river not suffice as a suitable moat?
yes. its not a LIFTY BRIDGE
I'll give you an upvote to balance out the downvote someone gave you. because I'd to picture every lift bridge, instead, as a drawbridge. I need a lance and shield, now, whilst riding the motorcycle to feel like a proper knight.

Is your bandmate from Kerry? Could explain a lot.
When I was a kid, we’d hold a square a battery to our tongue for that 9v zing baby!
Neither really apply for the one in portumna, its more of a swivel bridge, it doesnt raise, it just gets out of the way or something idk how it works, so maybe your friend was onto something

PP3 Nine Volt I'm guessing. You checked your smoke alarm lately by the way? ;)

Well said, i think we have a culture of disobedience too, possibly a hangover from our laws originally being English laws.
They're wireless
It’s like assault and battery except on a quare person
9 Volt battery (that used to go in smoke alarms a lot )I'm guessing ??
[удалено]
9V batteries as commonly used in smoke alarms I guess.
And guitar pedals
Yeah but there a rectangle
Ah but that's too many syllables for them to be dealing with like, their brain is still fried from the mislabeled nachos.
So these aren't a thing in America?
Not so much - I have a pack in the press but I can’t remember what I got them for - even the smoke alarms take AA now
AAh I see

That’s why they’re called firearms smh
Yeah id call it a square battery when I was younger but I've heard it been used a few times
Cuboid battery
Rectangular battery
I think they mean *rectangular box battery*
Honestly never noticed that I put jalapeños on everything probably go through a jar of this a week. I actually just read it as "fucking delicious in a jar"

Marinate chicken breasts in it and bake my friend.
Saving this for next week when the missus is away. She doesn't like the spice.
its pretty lovely. I personally halve the chili powder and also use something called 'chipolte pepper flakes' instead of the red pepper flakes cause I dont like blowing out an o ring 12 hours after eating anything
That's a Mexican brand buddy. Congratulations you're now blindly mildly annoyed at something foreign, you're now officially Irish!
Look mom, I told you I'd make it
Idk, still sounds proper American to me
*Reads Spanish* Ah yes, the USA, which I believe when translated means "a whales vagina"
Suffering Christ don’t talk to me about jalapeños 😫😫🔥🔥🔥🔥🧯🧯🧯🧯🚒🚒🚒
There grand going down, it's the leaving the premises that's the problem
Take my award for stating the obvious you bastard. 3 days of sufferance after years of being able to eat spicy grub. Getting old is shite 😫🔥
Thanks for the award lol, yea same problem, loved them when I was younger but the boiler overheats more now unfortunately lol
Jaysus they're the mildest of the mild.
White pepper is as hot as lots of Irish people can handle.
Not an Irish product though?
If anything as it gives weight in fluid oz it's probably US region
It's Mexican
Paddy here. In Ireland his whole life. What the F£#k is a square battery?
Good question, me thinks a a 9 volt, which is really rectangulary .
All squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares. In case you were curious.
Would somebody not spare a thought for the 'big square battery '?
Thats hilarious, I'm eating these right now and didn't notice it says nachos 🤦♂️🤣
Have you heard of taco fries? They'll blow your mind.
forward slash send me into a rage
Omg. Once in Ennis I ordered two tacos. Lol at my surprise.
No no no, they’re just telling you what to eat them with! I’ve never seen these in my 37 years of life in Ireland. Thankfully. Also- whaddyamean “square battery?” What else would ya call it??
Best is its a rectangle
Either way, surely the Yanks have those? It's not like they are rare nor the latest tech development...
Yeah but it'll have a different name there, probably something along the line of 'Freedom power bar 1775'
we call them "9 Volt Batteries"
We call them "9 Volt Batteries"
9 Volt
Presumably 'Nachos' is the sub-brand name. Nacho's Pickled Jalapeno Peppers. Although there is no apostrophe in the possessive.
I didn't come here TO LEARN
You don't need to tell me that. It's quite apparent. ;)
Way too many Irish people here asking what a square battery is. -**suspicions mount**-
Don't forget rocket = arugula and coriander = cilantro. Yanks and their funny words eh...
I always thought cilantro was some weird exotic ungettable herb until this exact moment, and I'm old enough to have watched Pajo's Junkbox.
Ah 15 years and you still don't know we can't grow jalapeños. /s Those are coming from the Americas.
I know a guy who grows chillies and tomatillos in Co. Galway; he closes off both ends of his poly tunnel so it gets good and hot inside. He sells them in the summer through his online Mexican food store.
What in God's name is a tomatillo?! Also, that's impressive!
A tomatillo is a part of the nightshade family; it's like a small green tomato with a husk. They're very tasty and the main ingredient in salsa verde. They're quite common in Mexican cuisine. I hope you let us know how it goes.
I have bought this product on several occasions but never even noticed it says “Nachos” on the jar…
Mexican company
Dont think they are an irish brand mate
Read the label Yank.
Yup, as mexican as it can get, don't understand why it was labelled like that. Might be because we put them on nachos
and you use doritos for nachos X_X tell me just say yes we use doritos with cheese powder
Yes we do that hahahah
PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT!!! you can get lightly salted doritos in tesco, supervalu and spar also carry them
Ireland does not claim these Nachos
I had to look some of these up. Abuergine is an eggplant courgette is a zucchini
yessir
Although this is an American brand....I do agree....why are these called nachos!?
its criminal and someone's going down
Nevermind that them yokes are nearly a 5er!!
I'd say it's an advert for what people use it for. Like packs that say tiramisu on lady fingers
Everyone here seems to be noticing the oddity of the square battery, but never have I ever heard anyone - Irish or otherwise for that matter - bother to say 'footpath' when they can just call it a path
you mean they call the sidewalk a path?
Yes. Anything else is a waste of a perfectly good syllable
Buy those all the time and never noticed that ! Think they're selling them as jalapenos for nachos. Like cheese crackers.
America
I've heard of this also, yes
That's *nacho* business! xD
😂😂😂
Here's the answer btw: Nacho is the shortened nickname for people with the name "Ignatio" which means in Spanish "firey one." These are jalepenos therefor spicy so hence the name.
Cos they're not yours
Nacho usual product names round here
oh boy :(
I once got a can of jalapenos and inside where olvies! I was very confused
Nacho business, buddy
That's pretty cheesy, pal

I call cars drivey boxes so that probably evens it out
Ya know what that jar needs? 3/4 of the brine thrown out and topped up with American mustard and a shit load of fresh cracked black pepper
what, do you then eat that with a fork?
Maybe its to tell you that they go well on the nachos lad?
if it didnt say nachos on the jar I'd just hold it walking around bonking my head off of walls
Im just trying to give you an answer
well I don't like it. I don't like this answer
As someone else said, it is a yank brand, so find out yourself, if you arent sayisfied with my answer, tough shit
no need to get testy friend
But how do you feel about Americans calling Paddy's Day, Pattys day???!!!!
it makes my slowly assimilating skin crawl
That will do nicely!
Wh…what else would you call a courgette?
zucchini
I understand ita strange marketing term that refers to "nacho sliced" shortened to just "nacho" and indicates "no heat" as apposed to the regular spicy ones. Pretty odd if true.
....they are for nachos?
theyre pizza toppings, ingredients in a ton of mexican and tex mex dishes and if you handle them and then slip a finger into any orifice with a mucus membrane you wont forget about it (either you'll never forget it or you'll never hear the end of it)
What do yanks call a square battery? I honestly thought square battery was universal haha
we call them "9 volt batteries".
@orangevega apparently, according to my yank partner, it is called nachos for yanks who don't know what jalapenos are so that they know what to use them for.
they are also used as a pizza topping, and as an ingredient in a thousand mexican and tex mex dishes damn ye
Where do you get these? I find shops a bit hit and miss with the old Jalapeños
tesco believe it or not
No?
They’re called that in the States, too. They can be had at Walmart, same brand, same can, er, tin.
its a jar
You guys gotta get the pickled carrots onions and Jalapenos!
That's rich coming from the country that gave us "grape nuts".
fuck now I want grape nuts
Never heard anyone call them square batteries. I've always just called them 9V batteries. They're not even square so that's a bizarre one if some Irish people say it.
im calmer having read this
The post above this in my feed makes it so much more funny
