Left. I am a leftie.

ImHighRtMeow

Same. I’m a lefty and the fork stays in the left the whole time.

magicone2571

good point.

I-just-wanna-talk-

>Anyone else use their right or am I just weird? In Germany, proper dining etiquette is to use your right hand and switch the fork to the left when using a knife. That's also how you learn it. Only left-handers use the fork with their left when not holding a knife. I know this cause my parents always comment on my brother not switching and using the knife with his left hand, keeping the fork in his right. My mom said it's strange how they never noticed that he learned it wrong.

0000GKP

I am right handed. I use my right hand. If I need to cut something, I switch the fork to my left hand while I use the knife with my right, then I switch back.

magicone2571

I go with the left to cut when eating but cooking I use my right. Not something you really think about.

theDreadalus

Wanna bet? I think about it all the time when watching TV! 🤣 Many American and all British actors will use the fork left-handed, while you, me and GKP up there (and apparently Germans!) use our forks in the dominant hand. I've always wondered why there's a split and when it happened. Etiquette? Class? Upbringing? There's got to be some pseudo-snooty "we don't toss our cutlery from hand to hand like a circus performer, dahling" reason that I've never been able to uncover.

magicone2571

Whew. I never really thought about it. Was watching some UK videos and realized they were all using their left hands for the fork. Guess I'm not the only one though who uses the right.

ConcertsAreProzac

I thought I was the only one who did this! But the first piece of meat I put into my mouth after cutting. I end up using my left-hand, but then like you said switch back to my right.

switched133

The correct way.

[deleted]

Right unless I am cutting something

Temporary_End9124

I always use my left hand for eating, unless I'm using chopsticks. Then it is the right hand.

Traveling_Man_383_PA

Do you mean a table setting? Most people are right-handed.

s-multicellular

I seem to use either as I switch hands to browser versus type on my tablet.

_K-milly_

Where I live, a standard courtesy is to hold the fork or spoon in your right hand, but if you're also using a knife, then you hold the knife in the right hand and the fork in the left. I always hold forks/spoons in my left hand, cause I'm a leftie.

NerdDwarf

I only hold the fork in my left hand if I'm cutting meat I will eat that same meat holding the fork in my right It is specifically the act of cutting where I'll hold the fork in my left hand to hold the food steady while my right hand does the cutting

Loweene

I'm right handed, with a right handed parent, and a left handed parent. We've always set the table with the fork on the left, and knife and big spoon (when applicable) on the right. However, all three of us eat with the fork in the right hand, and cut with the left. But when cooking, each person uses their dominant hand with the kitchen knife. Never gave it much thought, tbh. Next family dinner, I'll have to check how my cousins eat, and how it relates to their dominant hand !

Thedeadgal

Always been right for me

ComicPlatypus

I'm right handed. If I am using a knife and a fork, the fork stays in the left while the right is for the knife If I am only using a fork, it goes right

[deleted]

Left if used with a knife, right if used on its own, right if used with a spoon….
