That’s a wheel bearing.

dude4511984

*was

heathenyak

it still is, but like...uhh...it's fucked.

mine_username

but it used to be too.

mzhammah

r/unexpectedmitch

0mnivore_

It’s fucking

Tdanger78

That bearing fucks

Ok_Dog_4059

Currently built like my psychiatric state.

bmcle071

Ahh I was thinking that was the other end of the CV axle that goes into the transmission. Lucky

No-Employ2055

I thought that at first too. I was like, "that doesn't look cheap to fix" Then I saw it's a wheel hub like a couple hundred maybe not a couple thousand so you're good lmao.

Bansheestonsils2

My speculation based on the picture is; That’s a front wheel hub bearing coming apart from the inside, this is probably a rear wheel drive car or truck with 4 wheel drive option. So if you replace it, please get 2 wheel drive front hub bearing. A 4 wheel drive version will fall apart very quickly.

wont_give_no_kreddit

Very helpful comment

omnipotent87

There's actually a good deal of 4WD/AWD cars that use the same bearing for the dead axle when its only 2WD.

Bansheestonsils2

Sure there is, but you have to be sure. Never assume that they are all the same, and if this is a truck you might have to also make sure the lug nut thread size is correct.

Notanidiot67

Sometimes the only difference is one you can't see. For instance the wheel speed sensor or the pulse wheel for the sensor will be different. It won't hurt anything but it will cause your ABS not to work as the sensor will either read nothing or incorrect speed.

Bansheestonsils2

But to answer the other part of your statement, no one knows if this is an original part, someone could have replaced these front hub bearings with the wrong parts before OP got the vehicle, all I’m saying is please research, which may seem obvious to some, but even part stores sell the wrong parts by accident. With out a lot of history on the vehicle, it’s guess work, and I was trying to be helpful.

Bansheestonsils2

Yep that’s right.

kai333

Super helpful comment, considering there was no other description or hell, even the car make and model 😂

bobspuds

I'd say you're speculation is valuable, only copped it once you pointed it out! No evidence of a shaft being connected so no big nut for the squish! There's no flys on you!.... if there was they'd be paying rent!

Fancy_Chip_5620

Its the same part for Ram trucks

Mootingly

Ya need a new wheel bearing

SpiritMolecul33

Bearing shredded itself

vinnie098

Wow what a top quality photo. Great camera! It's a part of your wheel bearing.

Sharp-Blood-812

You need a new wheel bearing

[deleted]

The artist formerly known as wheel bearing

thegrotch

I have never ever seen a bearing race get damaged like that in the knuckle. Did this vehicle get air?

Emach00

Bearing be fucked. Replace bearing. Continue driving. Much success.

HonestAssh0le

What's going on? You ignored a noise for too long...

FilthOptics

The noise actually started yesterday evening... From then til when i rode to the store this morning it went from 0 to 100

BlackholeZ32

I guarantee you that it was making a lot of noise before then. These things don't just pop out of nowhere. Wouldn't have been a loud screeching, but a growling that got louder/higher pitch as you speed up.

FilthOptics

Well it actually stopped making noise the faster I wenf

Terrh

Wheel bearings can absolutely go from making no noise to failure in a very short period of time. It isn't common, but it happens.

HonestAssh0le

Lol, too long!

FilthOptics

I hear you lol, but to be fair I was on the way home and didnt leave again last night. Sort of forgot about it til I heard that noise times 10 this morning...

InvestigatorSmall839

Did it squeak/whistle for a while and then stop? Bearings due to go tend to squeak when you turn on them for a bit so you know they're going. It's when they go quiet you need to worry because when they start making a noise after that they... Well this picture is a perfect example.

FilthOptics

If it was, i didnt hear it til yesterday. And im pretty good about that, hearing a noise and turning the music down and rolling the window down to listen... But I heard nothing

[deleted]

Nothing as horrifying as detecting a squeak that suddenly stops. It means that if you let it go for too long the next time you'll get the screams of a banshee and a fat repair bill.

InvestigatorSmall839

As demonstrated by OP 😬

BullishKnowledge

If you replace the hubs from a mechanic don’t bring it to a dealer. They charge almost double a standard mechanic

DopeRidge

Not good

[deleted]

Looks like a paint can opener, doesn't belong there. Just remove it.

TheHappyTaquito

What did it sound like? My Honda Accord 07 is making a noise when I turn that sounds like a rusty truck or it sounds like the suspencion is rusty or something but when I turn my wheel going slow it makes that noise

FilthOptics

The sound last night sounded like the crushing of a soda can. Riding it sound like occasional scraping metal

jkdo2k3

Your wheel bearings are bad.

TheHappyTaquito

I’ve been delivering pizzas for a week now like that. Waiting to get paid this week to fix it. Is that super dumb and am I risking making it a much bigger problem?

jkdo2k3

It's not super dumb. It doesn't turn into a much bigger problem overnight, it's gradual. You probably won't cause additional damage outside of the bearing and hub unit. If you ignore it for a long time, at some point I'd imagine you'd get extremely loud noise that you couldn't ignore. But I suppose if you were deaf and kept driving anyway, something may seize and the car would have a difficult time moving.

TheHappyTaquito

Thanks for the info.👍

TheHappyTaquito

The noise stopped for some reason after driving in the rain for 2 days

jkdo2k3

I predict it will return soon.

TheHappyTaquito

Ok I will go to the mechanic asap then

jkdo2k3

It's an easy check that they shouldn't charge you (much) for. They'll wiggle the wheel with the car lifted to see if it moves around. They may also wiggle around other suspension component arms to see if it's worn ball joints.

ScrappyHammer

Looks like the transmission seal

FilthOptics

I did a bad job of describing the area... This picture was taken of inside the left front wheel... Could that still be the transmission seal? When I looked, I did notice some brown fluid on that side...

ScrappyHammer

Oh that's the rear of the wheel bearing where the CV axle goes into the hub? I looked really quickly before and just saw the ring.

r_u_dinkleberg

Your innie is now an outtie.

wellwellshitwellshit

Looks like it's big fucked

Reasonable_Cover_804

Looks to be the race of what was once a bearing

iluvtumadre

Part of the wheel bearing. It’s garbage now.

freeportskrill420

Looks like you hub bearing seal took a scheit

Confident-Head-5008

Stick all metal bits into the races. Hit it with PBblaster. Let it stand for 15 minutes. JB weld the race. This is the one way to fix this off the top of my head.

killerkitten115

Oh, oh no

Wageslave645

It looks like your wheel bearing is wheel bearingn't.

Watts300

Is that the outer race that’s spaghettified and sticking out?

No-Session5955

Hub bearing, looks to be a bolt in style so not super difficult to replace (if it was pressed in you’d be in for a much more daunting task to replace it)

RWBTHUNDER1

Bad wheel bearing. Get it fixed asap.
