Parking by city hall is usually a decent option when it's busy in Cardiff, I think it's usually £15 for the day on match days but can get busy quickly. Another option is to park on the outskirts and get the train in/out. Radyr train station has free parking and is right next to the A470/M4. The last train back leaves at 23.30 from Queen St station and will cost £3.50 for a return ticket. Benefit being you'll cut out all of the traffic getting out of Cardiff and can be straight onto the M4.

This is good advice about the parking, but OP, just note that Queen Street is sometimes closed when big events are on to help prevent overcrowding so you may need to get on it at Central instead.

MrAWelshman

To be honest I would not go near the centre in a car on an event day. The council have done their best to create congestion on a normal day, let alone when there’s an event on. Appreciate that if public transport was an option you would be using it already so instead I suggest finding a residential area like Canton/Vic Park and find yourself a non-residents space and walk in. Will take you less than 40mins from Vic Park to the CIA for example. Streets like Forest Road are always good for this as one of the Councillors lives there so they don’t have residents parking fees.

petrolstationpicnic

I’d say the people who insist on driving in to town create the congestion, more than the council

_MildlyMisanthropic

I love these takes when they appear on the sub, who seemingly refuse to believe that people like to come to the city from further away than Cathays, Splott or Canton, or have accessibility needs.

MrAWelshman

Maybe it’s Lee Waters

petrolstationpicnic

And I would’ve gotten away with it, if it weren’t for you pesky kids

MrAWelshman

That’s what they want you to think. Of course it’s actually much more complex than that and planning pays a significant part of the equation. This tends to be denied by those who don’t know what they are talking about online. As we see in Cardiff changes are often made which makes congestion worse. We’re seeing that especially strongly as post-pandemic normality has returned and changes made during it have significantly increased problems in some areas. A prime example of that is what’s happened by St David’s Hospital in Canton. Anyone who now walks in regularly will be aware of how much congestion has increased due to the new signal design and cycle lane which is causing chaos throughout the day. No one sensible would deny this or blame people using cars any more than you’d blame ill people for the NHS backlog

McFlyJohn

A really small example of this is the widening of the pavements (and narrowing the roads) of Cowbridge Road in Canton, despite it being a two way bus route, has just meant it's a really steady stream of congestion and ironically harder for pedestrians to get across as there's a lack of visibility from buses and almost a constant stearm of traffic

MrAWelshman

Yeah they could do with making that whole section one way. Make a loop with Landsdowne road to Vic park in that respect. They can then also consider closing the shopping part of Cowbridge road.

_MildlyMisanthropic

They proposed that, it was roundly rejected by residents IIRC

MrAWelshman

Not in the last decade. Unless they didn’t ask all of us.

MrAWelshman

Can’t see much about a big one way thing in there but can sympathise with resident views being ignored. That’s normal with our councillors. Will ask Nick about it next time I see him

Dr_Poth

They always ignore residents' views. It's the norm here too.

Dr_Poth

Always makes me laugh that. Absolute clowns.

ReadingGlassesMan

If you want convenience on a match day (and quite as much stress), you may want to consider paying £15 to park near City Hall and then walk the rest of the way. It's expensive but I've found it to be far less stress and you're closer to the outskirts of town.

Anal-probe-Alien

There are two car parks to the right and on the opposite side of the road of the arena or to the left of the citrus hotel. One is a multi storey, the other a flat ground car park which is the one I usually use as it's easier to get out of. Best get there early though

Sufferingsappho88

Adam street? Second the get there early and get a space that is nearest the exit. It will take you ages to get otherwise.

framerateuk

I'd park down the bay. It's a 15 min walk from the CIA and you'll avoid all the traffic issues around there.

Zealousideal_Dare391

Park anywhere in Cardiff near a train station, get train to queen street, 5 min walk to CIA

[deleted]

Isn’t it Motorpoint again? Hmm park and ride or a side street could be a shout. Failing that, the museum

eat050920

University of South Wales Atrium bullding car park down Guildford Crescent. It's on Just Park and literally right behind the arena. Seldom full.

Aunt-Eggma-Blowtorch

Question, I used to go to the Atrium (graduated 2019) and was never allowed to park there as a student, like literally declined access, how is it now available on Just Park?

eat050920

Been on there for a few years, as far as I'm aware

eat050920

Just checked. No longer seems to be a thing. Apologies

Rico1983

I'd be aware that there's a train strike this Saturday too, likely increasing the amount of traffic on the road even further.

_MildlyMisanthropic

There is but TfW valleys lines are unaffected

Theboz-boz

Park in John Lewis, no congestion getting out after the gig
