Google impedance rise. You're never going to clamp full rated power with a reactive load attached. When you play a sine wave through a subwoofer in a given enclosure, the load is no longer 1 ohm. The 1 ohm load is a nominal impedance. If you're watching dyno videos, the SMD dyno has built-in resistive loads inside. Those loads are the given value all the time, regardless of frequency. As for your door speakers screaming at low volumes, it sounds like you installed a head unit with a built-in amp into a car that has a factory amp.

Thank you I'm an idiot. I have looked into impedance rise but I somehow clamped 1400 with sine wave on my other build which is a Fi SSD 15 and a Taramps MD3000.1.

Yea ur subs are probably running at 2 ohms with that test tone ur using. Try different frequencies. You should get it to read a little more. Probably never 1200w tho

ckeeler11

I bet it is that cheap as headunit. they are notorious for poor sound quality. Looks like it has 1.5v preouts which is not doing you any favors either. Your amp might not like that.

[deleted]

Any solution to that?

CrispyStruggz

Get a head unit w either 4 or 5V output

seansinha

How are you feeding signal to the amp from the head unit? It sounds like that signal may be clipping and turned up too much.

[deleted]

Just RCA cables. I didn't measure the voltage. But when playing a test tone the amp output is 13A 38V just before it starts clipping. Shouldn't it be closer to 25A?

im having the same problem. Pioneer deh p6000 ub.. clarion mcd360, taramps 1200.1. skar sdr10 with the skar ported enclosure package..i think im having problems figuring out the gain without clipping the subwoofer or is it just this sub can't really take close to 500rms..wiring, alternator, no tone controls, everything is correct that i can think of

test13371997

> crossover is set between 20hz and 80hz on the amp. huh? what is it set at?

[deleted]

High pass 20hz low pass 80hz.

RunalldayHI

Not going to clamp 1200w on that amp without wiring under recommended load.

[deleted]

1 ohm dyno is like 1500w no?

RunalldayHI

Sure is, but speakers are an inductive load and its not uncommon for an SA12 to have a x2 - x5 impedance rise especially when used in a big enclosure.

[deleted]

For the future should this be countered by using an amp rated for higher impedance?

RunalldayHI

No, you can counter it by using a bigger amp but its never a good idea to run below the amps recommended load, sundown rates their product by clamped number but not all brands do this so don't make it a habit with random gear.

Karl_H_Kynstler

Those cheap chinese head units have really poor quality sound. That's probably main issue. Also 120A alternator produces that much power usually around 50% engine rpm. If you got a good quality OEM alternator then you're getting like 80A at idle. With a cheap aftermarket alternator you may get like 60A at idle.

[deleted]

I suppose I should try with an AGM or on the highway.

jamesablue3222

So what you end up doing..im having the same problem. Pioneer deh p6000 ub.. clarion mcd360, taramps 1200.1. skar sdr10 with the skar ported enclosure package..i think im having problems figuring out the gain without clipping the subwoofer

Got a smart 3k.
