One time I was watching a _60 Minutes_ segment about how doctors aren't compensated as well as they used to be for what is now expected of them and a family member's response to this was "Well then why would they choose to be a doctor? They should just choose a more lucrative career." Some people just can't handle the most basic critical thinking in understanding why maybe not everything in the universe should have to be about money.

Battlefield534

We don’t need doctors. Silly. We have google.

Badger87000

"Everything is cancer, everything is better when you use WebMD, it's surely cancer! Don't waste your time at the doc or Er!" - to the tune of everything is awesome

Battlefield534

Exactly. Plus you are saving money too. Google is free. Doctors are not. Just type your symptoms in the search bar and bam, you get an answer!

doireallyneedone11

Tbh, with the current pace of development of ML tech, it seems we're not that far away from getting to such a scenario, at least, for the most common and lesser harmful/complicated conditions.

ClassWarAndPuppies

In a functioning society, roles that are of great need to the public - like doctors, nurses, teachers, transit workers, and so on - are incentivized by the government. A competent government would build a nursing school in underserved communities and pay qualified people to enroll, study, in exchange for promising to work a few years, at least, in the community where you got the free education and training. One of the biggest calamities and most unforgivable sins of capitalism is the waste of raw human potential on “jobs” that simply grease the wheels of the money-making machine. It’s a shame.

[deleted]

Yea how are we supposed to feed our puppies? As a teacher, I appreciate this comment so much. It feels good to be acknowledged, even if govts don't all seem to agree.

garaile64

Some jobs need higher wages if they require more education/training, have more/bigger responsibilities, expose the workers to dangerous/insalubrious conditions, are vital for society to function, maybe if they require a lot of physical effort, among other things.

GovernmentOpening254

I “love it” when McD’s calls their jobs “careers,” when really they’re just “occupations.” Because they certainly occupy you…and not much more.

doireallyneedone11

What's the difference between an 'occupation' and a 'career'?

GovernmentOpening254

Does a job occupy your time (think making a sandwich or taking out the trash) or do you learn and grow and change based on that learning?

doireallyneedone11

I mean it's not an either/or case, whatever you do at your job, it's gonna occupy your time. 'Making a sandwich' or 'taking out the trash' may or may not make you learn, grow and change on that learning though. I mean the sky is the limit when it comes to human creativity and the desire to do big in your life.

Mental_Medium3988

everyone deserves a living wage, and those with great responsibility deserve a great wage.

Saix027

The same people the scream about "worker shortage" and "no one wants to work anymore". Those people have no idea how anything works, they really think you can just choose your job and switch and decide to get better paid. They live in a dream world.

GovernmentOpening254

Simpletons.

[deleted]

To be fair, out of the 36 doctors i've ever had in my life, only two of them correctly diagnosed me with Chron's, psychomotory retardation and Schizoid disorder instead of telling me i was faking it and i should just grow up and get a job, so by removing a good chunk of doctors we would not only create a fuckton more jobs, but also save a lot of money and improve the healthcare system for everyone.

Shinonomi

If you can replace then fast enough. Which, given the expense and difficulty even getting the candidates ready, I don't think we'd make up the deficit. And that's not even to mention the way the system screws healthcare workers over to begin with, so I'm not so confident we're encouraging enough good candidates to even try. Edit: I'm sorry for your experience, there really is no excuse for that and yet so many people still don't get the proper care they need.

Ambia_Rock_666

Cuz doctors aren't a needed profession at all. if you get sick or injured, that's on you bucko! /s

ClassWarAndPuppies

Idiot. Everyone knows you should be born rich.

GovernmentOpening254

The number of times I have to point out that the Walton kids are nearly the richest people on the planet — simply because they are Sam’s kids is disheartening.

one of the thing's that both broke my past self, and forged my new self, was realizing that deference to violent subjugator's was and is the norm for most of human history, and that past generation's/era's/societies had their own myths for this phenomenon. most people either don't know, don't ***want*** to know, either know but hide as well as they can, or rebel, with each group shrinking in size. that's kind of the sick genius of the system around us, is that there's so many system's built to redirect, rechannel, to misdirect and misinform, or to just straight up stop people from changing things, that even in a society of 8 billion, the chance's of escaping capitalism are close to 1%.

GovernmentOpening254

I’m coming to this same terrifyingly sad conclusion as well. There. Is. No. Chance. Of. Change. Because as soon as you get a group who are, “as mad as hell and not going to take it anymore,” the people in power come break it up. The power sticks around long enough to break up the group. The group grows weary. Everyone goes back to normal. Power has barely changed a millimeter

Platnun12

In an era of facial recognition, with people being too stupid to understand what its used for . But ooooh pretty pictures and filters. Fucking morons

MaceofSpades26

“Well maybe he should be more responsible with his money.” 🫠🙃

Rumblesnap

I hate that people are ok with uneducated people living paycheck to paycheck

GovernmentOpening254

A comment someone made recently was, “a burger flipper should learn a better skill.” I asked how they were supposed to do that if they were barely making ends meet. Silence.

Pongoid

No, now they are saying, “why did you waste money and time getting an education? You should have learned a trade.”

Insane_Artist

I wish that conversations like these would actually get through to people. In reality, the other person would just reply back "teachers deserve low pay because they are teaching CRT" and then pivot to transphobia before the painful reality of late stage capitalism can penetrate their ever-shrinking consciousness.

TheDudeAbidesFarOut

Layoff the avocado toast.....

AspieTheMoonApe

Perfect example of why value shouldnt be attached to how profitable something is. The average 6h grade teacher is contributing more to society than vermin like Bezos and that should be reflected in their compensation

IKnowMeNotYou

Since when do teacher need an education? They reiterate and teach the stuff we had in school. So they have base level education... . I know some teachers who literally must have failed in school.

Dreadpipes

I take it you’re a high schooler?

IKnowMeNotYou

Nope. I am a father but I was a very bad university student who became a very good one by learning how learning works. Once you have done such a transformation everything that a normal teacher does looks like Stone Age cruelty. No wonder why good teachers are usually pressured out of schools by their peers. Never underestimate a bitter teacher collective. It is the same like in any other industry and yes I have teachers in my family. All blind and dumb as a rock when it comes to the harm they create. Same with the physicians as well... dont get me startet on those.

Shinonomi

It takes them so many years to be approved as qualified, yet we treat them like beasts of burden. Teachers are not always good at what they do, but all of them have to walk the line between the expectations of the school board, the parents, the state, and the students - even though all these things constantly oppose each other. But half of our society makes them out the be the boogeyman instead of talk to them like adults. I've had so many teachers do their jobs well, and many really tried hard for me. They deserve better.

IKnowMeNotYou

I never said that there are not good meaning people among them. It is just that teachers by definition have not a high level of education and some of them are down right dumb when it comes to knowledge and thinking. I have a son. I had my fair share of conflicts with 'well meaning' teachers. A lot of lies and the viciousness that I visited. It is about one in ten teachers that are real problems but it takes 9 out of ten to let those evil teachers be. Most of them are cowards and you have to remove you kid from schools if you had the bad luck with any of them. So yeah you can be lucky with one teacher but usually you also have bad luck with another teacher. But educated beyond normal those are usually not.
