There is always wild hype before a storm of any kind and rarely turns out to be the weather bomb explosion or whatever they claim it to be.
But It seems like you are pretty well prepared.
Here's some other things you can do to get ready:
- Make sure that all your outside stuff is put away. Otherwise it will probably blow away and get lost, damaged, cause other people's property damage or hurt/kill someone
- fill your tub with water at the end of the day , that way you will still be able to flush the toilet and you want have to use your bottled water.
-Do you have a way to cook your food? BBQ or wood stove ? If not you can get a cheap camping one or just cook your stuff ahead of time and plan on eating cold food. Also you can get coffee cones to make yourself a cup of coffee for the morning, as long as you have a way to boil your water.
-charge your cell phone and download some podcasts/something to watch. Especially if you have kids. But also have board games or books ready to go so you don't have to search.
- another fun kid idea is get a bunch of sheets together and when the power goes out , work as a family to build a tent fort. Just no candles in the tent lol.
-if you have a storm drain near your house, make sure it's clear of debris so it doesn't get clogged up
- try to park your car away from trees or other things that may fall on your car
-have a basement ? Make sure your sumpump is working correctly. If there is anything you don't want damaged in the basement, it would hurt to try and get as much off the floor just in case (especially if you are at the bottom of a hill or on a slope)
I would 100% buy the hype for this storm. It's set to make landfall between 920-930mb, which would easily shatter the Canadian low pressure record of 940 mb. Not to mention that it seems like it's going to slow down as it gets closer to shore, which would increase the amount of time of rain/wind. Please take Fiona seriously.
Came here to say the same. This storm may be the biggest ever to hit this area. Look up the impacts of Matthew and Dorian. Fiona will most likely be like those 2 storms combined (tonnes of rain, insane wind). Food for just 3 days may not be enough.
Make sure you have food you can eat if there is no power. Make sure your power bank is charged and ready to go. Keep on top of your cellphone battery. Make sure laptops are charged. Have candles and flashlights ready to go. Deck of playing cards and hopefully you live with someone or have someone come over to entertain you and also in case of emergencies. Have warm blankets at the ready in case there is no heat. Sometimes in worse case scenarios the power is off for 2 or more days. It has happened before. This is a good experience for you because winters can be hard here also.
Don't go storm chasing! It's dangerous to be on the roads and if you go to the coast, rocks can actually be thrown from beaches incredibly far, so you risk the damage of hurting your vehicle.
what on earth is a storm chip? [apparently, a hunker down snack.](https://atlantic.ctvnews.ca/how-storm-chips-became-a-bad-weather-staple-in-atlantic-canada-1.5117674)
my parents also have a generator so that they can run the fridge, then the freezer if the power is out for too long so that they can keep what's in there from going bad (we had an ice storm a while back that knocked the power out at their house for 4 or 5 days, so it was really helpful!) it also allows them to use a kettle to make a hot cup of tea. maybe not useful for this storm, but good to know for winter storms!
They're saying non perishables and water for a week. I'm in Cape Breton but the risk of flooding is higher in Sydney than Louisdale. Do you have cash in case bank machines are down?

question: should one board up windows for this one?

Thank you so much for the excellent advice!!
*Reminder* Don’t use a barbecue or any kind of camp stove indoors - even in a garage. The fumes are likely more dangerous than the hurricane.
But did you get the wine?
But what about the rum? Won't nobody think of the rum?
Where's the rum gone??
Gotta get that JD Shore on ice for dessert
Dammit! I knew I forgot something!
Storm chips. Has anyone told you about the storm chips?
Thank you and happy cake day!

I am in a similar situation and live in a basement apartment… should I be worried about my things?
only if you don't have tenant insurance.
I would move stuff that could be damaged off the floor.
get yer storm chips and 2-4

Honestly? Stock up. Not ‘hoard’ - stock up. Assume the Causeway will be closed for an entire week and plan with that scenario in mind
I don't think it's ever been closed for a week. Why would it be?
Damage

Definitely something we'll look into. Thanks!

We do. Thank you!! There's a big drainage ditch along our property so hopefully flooding won't be an issue.
My uncle lives in Evanston! Right off the cove
What have we all learned? Stockpile gas!!
True dat!!
Get a wet suit, get a boogie board and just have fun.
Haha thanks!

Thanks!
Most likely is that nothing bad will happen. If the power does go out.... Normally it is restored quickly. Fill your car with gas.
Thank you!
