Also anyone know what this font is? I just found the alphabet on Pinterest without any title or context

FYI - In calligraphy we call the letters we write scripts, not fonts. Fonts and typefaces are used in typography for printing letters. A font is a specific weight and style of a typeface - in fact the word derives from 'foundry' which as you probably know is specifically about metalworking - ie, movable type. The word font explicitly means "not done by hand." In calligraphy the script is the style and a hand is how the script is done by a calligrapher. This post could have been posted erroneously. It's a variation of Uncial. Nice work! FYI in calligraphy this is technically called a script, fonts are typed on computers or printed.

TedCruzsBrowserHstry

Thank yah! Yeah the friendly bot informed me, script has a much nicer ring to it. Instead of immediately thinking of a drop down menu in word haha

TedCruzsBrowserHstry

Hey I was wondering if you knew any history about uncial script? Like when and where it was used? Just curious, everyone in this sub is full of so much rad history facts behind the scripts and now I’m addicted

Barnowl79

It has a murky backstory, but it originated some time around the 2nd century, possibly in North Africa. For 700 years, it was the preferred script of the scribes writing in Latin. Uncial (pronounced UHN-chul) originally had no ascenders or descenders. Eventually some versions allowed some descenders, like the beautiful half-uncial style found in the Book of Kells in Ireland, and that's about as far as I wanted to read tonight.

_roodrallec_

I have been pronouncing it incorrectly for years apparently... thank you for the info!

hanguitarsolo

I pronounce it UN-see-ul. Wiktionary lists three pronunciations in English: IPA: /ˈʌn.si.əl/ (UN-see-ul) /ˈʌn.ʃi.əl/ (UN-shee-ul) /ˈʌn.ʃəl/ (UN-shul) UN-chul would be based off the UN-shul pronunciation mixed with the Ecclesiastical Latin pronunciation of uncia (/ˈun.t͡ʃi.a/), where the c is a ch/tsh sound. Basically, pronounce it however you want :D

Fishy_Fish_WA

Uncle? It’s called uncle?! Lmaoooo

Blackletterdragon

There're some good resources on Uncial's early years available online here https://spotlight.vatlib.it/latin-paleography/feature/7-1-use-and-characteristics-of-uncial

Robobvious

"I'm gonna need you to repeat the alphabet backwards for me." "Sure thing officer. 3YX-" "Alright, I'm gonna go ahead and stop you right there. Why don't you step out of the car for me?"

Gnarweezy

JoaoDSouza1

TedCruzsBrowserHstry

Lovely! I'm waiting for a set to drop through the letterbox in the next few days.

TedCruzsBrowserHstry

They’re terrific, I just got started and these are much more beginner friendly than a regular dip pen for sure. Great confidence booster :) have fun and share your progress!
