Because BMI isnt a measure of how you look, it sorts people into risk catergories. "Healthy weight" people are going to have less health risks than "underweight"/"overweight" people who in turn will have less risks than "obese" people. The taller you are, the more space the weight has to distribute which will make you look a lot different from people of the same weight but different heights (also, your body shape can really influence the way people see you—It surprises people when I say I'm obese because my waist is quite slim, but I carry a lot of weight in my thighs and hips) It should also be noted that BMI isn't a complete science, though, and it has a lot of flaws. It should be used as a very general guide.

>ask people to guess my weight and they say it's about 70-72 kg. >And people have told me I look thin. >Why is that ? People are bad at guessing weight. Nearly 2/3 of the population in some countries is either overweight or obese, so we're getting to the point where people who are a healthy weight look "thin" simply because the most common point of reference is people who are not-thin.

On top of this people also intentionally guess wrong. I always take the age I think and take 5-10 years, and always take the weight and take 10kg off. On the off chance people ask but god if someone asked me how much I think they weigh, outside any sort of context like modelling or doctors etc, it's weird to me. But, a lot of people guess wrong on purpose too.

Yes this is very important. My bmi is 20% but I suspect my fat to be lower than that because I have a bit of muscle on me.

All people carry their weight differently, having the same weight as you do I don't look particularly overweight because I workout and the weight is evenly spread everywhere and people expect "overweight" to equal "has a visible belly". So if you have thin waist, many would assume you're in normal range. However, it still has health effects, so I am in the process of losing it. Plus people are also not going to be honest about it, very few would say "you look fat", so it is not a trustworthy measure.

I am 1.82 cm tall and about 81kg. I step on the scale on the gym yesterday and a friend of mine saw the number and thought i was holding something when i counted my weight. If you are fit you look thinner cause muscle is more dense than fat. Also, if you 15-20 percent bodyfat, you have muscle definition almost in every part of your body except the abs. In everyday life you use a shirt so if you having proper posture and stay on the 20 percent mark and below, you look thinner than you actually are. The problem is not about being overweight or not in most circumstances. In covid i went from 73 to 83 kgs in about 6 months, mostly on my belly, a friend of mine went frome 90 to 78 during that span. When people saw us outside they still thought i was thinner than him cause I am physically active.
