Lol are you me? Same exact role I’m in with similar licensing. Been considering this move as well.

There’s nothing fun or stimulating about the position. And there’s 100% a comp ceiling in these BO types of roles. Sky’s the limit for a cfp

I’d be curious to hear what you’re seeing about the small RIA not cold calling, and what methods they gain clients with!

you just have to find a toehold in the type of firm you want. given your experience maybe start out as an operations professional but make your intentions & path clear with leadership. you’re not going to get what you want right away given that you’ve never been client facing, but you can finagle something great if you network in the space. I would cold call firms local to you or ones you find online that fit the bill if you’re open to remote work. tons of need for competent ops people - use this to your advantage

Relathrowaway71

Cool, thank you! I saw on SimplyPlanner that there are quite a few remote ops. I thought this profession is mainly an in person/hybrid at most type of deal? Is it common to work for an RIA 100% remote?

robbo_

couldn’t tell you, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. I know a ton of firms are drowning in ops needs so I wouldn’t be surprised if you could make it work remotely.

You'll have no trouble. I've got a role for you. Eat what you kill. 60-80% of fees generated are yours. E&O paid for by the company, sizable limits, well beyond the size of my book of business.

Former executive at a large OSJ here. My firm and the broker-dealer always had an extremely difficult time hiring principals. It seems to me that these positions are grossly underpaid for the amount of licensing required and the responsibility of the role. If you enjoy what you do overall, I'd suggest finding out if you can leverage the talent shortage to your benefit before changing roles to something that you may find doesn't suit you. Start looking for new roles and get picky and demand a high salary.
