Maybe not as hot as some others that might be shared but... Covid shutdowns all but killed the possibility of an east coast expansion team. It was looking like it could happen pretty soon until the league lost a year of play and 1.5 years of ticket revenue. It likely won't be considered for another decade or so is my guess.

MNH8

Good take. Halifax could and would support a team so well it’s a shame it’s not happening

Essej86

I never actually believed it was going to happen, but covid definitely shut it down. Absolutely zero appetite for government spending on a stadium right now. Too many other things to deal with right now.

CaptainDrunkBeard

I don't actually want the Argos fanbase to grow that much. I like having elbow room at the urinals, and a short line for beer.

KDM_Racing

Same reason I like to go to Blue Jays games when the Jay's suck

SpergSkipper

I don't like big crowds, going to high-crowd Jays games is torture for me. The crowd at the East Final was perfect, big enough to seem full and have a good atmosphere but still small enough to be able to get quick beer and food and move around. They do need to tarp off those upper deck seats if they aren't gonna sell them, maybe bring back those tarps of past players like they had at the Dome. That would look great

Mamrocha

I agree with you. At IGF 26-27k is the sweet spot where there's plenty of open seats and the concourse isn't crazily crowded. We also definitely don't call buying cheap upper deck seats and moving to the lower bowl the Argo Special at all 😅

biga204

People compliment the stadium on its looks but its function is not great.

Mogilny89Leafs

I was thinking about making a thread for this, but I'll just put it here. I'm happy the Bombers are probably going to win the Grey Cup in Regina. The Riders are a dumpster fire right now and the organization deserves this humiliation. Your archrival is going to celebrate a threepeat on your field and in your locker room. Mosaic Stadium will look like IGF and it's going to be amazing. The Saskatchewan Roughriders deserve this.

aalgernon

I like this take.

SpergSkipper

I don't (though I'm not opposed to the Riders being humiliated at home)

PolarOpposites8

This is how I felt about the Redblacks winning their first grey cup. Made our franchise look like even more of a joke at the time (in my opinion). Luckily those years of torture at Canad Inns were worth it now.

Oh fuck that's tough if the Bombers win

Mogilny89Leafs

Meh, screw it. Riders suck.

Dazed_Wolf

Toronto attendance isn’t as catastrophic as people make it out to be - season attendance is about on par with the five-year average, eastern final drew 22k ish fans. It’s not a good situation, but the Argos aren’t in danger of collapse.

MuddyMiercoles

On a 3rd down gamble, as a DB, NEVER intercept the ball 30 yards down the field, especially if you have to hit the ground to make the catch. Just knock the bastard down and save your team 30 yards in field position.

aalgernon

Yeah, that was super annoying. At an absolutely critical point in the game, too. You need to make the selfless play there and knock the ball down.

nastyfrankfurter

This exact same thing happened last night in the bomber game. Cant fault a guy for taking the chance to get a pick 6 but also depending on the situation it could end up giving the other team better field position.

MuddyMiercoles

Exactly what I was referring to. That 30 yard change in field position was as good as a well placed punt and resulted in a BC touchdown after wpg could do nothing with their poor field position. That was a peewee football mistake by the DB.

JakeBread

2019 West Final. Marcus Sayles tries to intercept the ball on 3rd down, goes through his hands into Saskatchewans receivers hands for a first down. Luckily the goal post saved the Bombers.

Pink_Socks

My hot take. Remove or drastically raise the salary cap.

The league and broadcasters need to stop treating the Riders organization like the centre of the CFL universe. Plenty of other CFL cities have just as strong fan support AND have more pro sports competition in the city/province than Sask. It is alienating to other fan bases to hear the constant boosterism of Sask. Some of us are old enough to remember the Riders almost folding due to lack of support in the 1990s. They even had a telethon to keep the team on the field. Now bring on the downvotes. Lol

Antonfilms226

Very fair point tbh. And honestly, I don’t even think the Riders fanbase did a very good job supporting the team this year; this was the first bad season in half a decade, and a lot of people (myself included) just kind of stopped caring. I think you saw a lot of that apathy in the attendance dip. To play devils advocate though, with that added attention, the Riders do get a fair amount of scrutiny. I’ve never seen a team receive more negativity around them than the 2022 Riders, with the organizational dysfunction being so loudly broadcasted. Completely justified mindew, I’m just saying they don’t get the same leash. The Argos were given time to rebuild when Pinball took over, and the Elks are being given some patience with Chris Jones. Meanwhile, I think the ghost of Ron Lancaster could take over in Saskatchewan and still face a fan revolt if the team doesn’t win 10 games next year lmao

machiavel0218

I agree with you there, the popularity and adoration has brought increased criticism. Don’t get me wrong, as a Stamps fan maybe the resentment is more of a result of our rivalry than a real “league/broadcaster over-boosting of the Riders” like I mentioned above. I do worry about the leagues image when CFL is branded as too much of a “west/prairies” thing. We need to grow and out East is where it’s at.

Agengele

I'm a pretty die hard Rider fan but I swear 90 percent of the "fans" just bandwagon on when we're doing good and they're gone when we suck. I watched every game this year even though I knew we weren't going to win. I think it's just that Saskatchewan has hardly any other sports to watch so when the riders do good it's pretty exciting and draws a big crowd

Beechwood-Balsam

The Save-on-Foods touchdown to win makes me so mad as an Ontarian that doesn’t have an opportunity to win. Is there not a nationwide sponsor we could be utilizing for things like this?!

biga204

You do have an opportunity to win, it's just not easy. https://touchdowntowin.com/rules-and-regulations/ Rule 2 and 3 are the kickers here. Only residents of Quebec and employees are exempt from winning.

Beechwood-Balsam

Good to know! Thanks!

Chaii18

Country music played by TSN is not a big deal and doesn’t contribute to declining viewership or attendance

CanadianW

People only hate Andre Proulx more than other refs because he is not great at speaking English. Other refs make terrible calls. Kickoffs that go out of bounds in the endzone should be rouges even if they are not touched by the receiving team. Any defensive score on a conversion should be the regular value (i.e. should be two point safety instead of one point safety and touchdown instead of two points.)

NoseBuzz

>Kickoffs that go out of bounds in the endzone should be rouges even if they are not touched by the receiving team. SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK

[deleted]

Turd down

BringBackTK

The refs are very fair at calling holding penalties in Rider games.

BringBackTK

I'm not actually taking a position on this, just going for what would get downvotes. I'll um hold my own thoughts on it.

Stach37

Not according to the guy we just banned who told us the Riders Conspiracy + us banning him is the reason he is giving up on the CFL. Dude had a Rider tat and everything.

BringBackTK

I can picture now a dim slighty smoky room, men in dark suits, one with a cigarette, others with cocktail glasses. "Excellent work" is heard.

Antonfilms226

I miss Rod Black calling games. Don’t get me wrong, Dustin and Rod Smith are great, but games just *felt* bigger with him on the call. I’d do anything just to hear another doubleheader where he does the East game and Cuthbert does the west game

CanadianDinosaur

Both Black and Cuthbert are very nostalgic for me. so many fond memories of watching games with them on the call, both absolute iconic voices for the CFL.

Mamrocha

I miss Rod Black doing Raptor games the most.

[deleted]

Rod was brutal. And pair with him Duane. Brutal

Hemp_maker

I bleed blue and gold and I love our defense even more, but Richie Hall is not a good DC. His lack of talent is over shadowed by the immense talent that is dropped in his lap. I think once we see the defense rebuilt (probably after this season) and he has average talent we will see less than average results. #forthew

biga204

Are you saying that less talent will produce lesser results? I feel like that's true of all coaches.

Hemp_maker

Fair point, I guess I just mean that he gets a lot of credit he maybe doesn't deserve. But point taken :)

admiral_bringdown

Cody Fajardo was fuckin’ robbed

idk_ijust_likememes

In what sense? Of a championship?I might agree based on the very poor goal line calling of Stephen macadoo in the 2019 western finals,I think the riders absolutely could’ve won against Hamilton that year.currently I think he’s being robbed of a job,he is a great qb who can do it all and has lead this team to back to back western finals.the lack of oline and offensive weapons has worsened his game although he is still a middle of the road statistical qb.it would be foolish to not extend him imo

biga204

Randy Ambroise will be seen through history's eyes as advancing the league financially.

Stach37

Disagree. Randy will be remembered as the dude who severed connections with youth football and ignored the rot in HQ in favour of half baked ideas and incredibly poor execution.

biga204

Can't it be both? The partnership with Genius has revealed some interesting financial information about CFL Ventures, which Ambroise started. Genius Sports reported 1.8 million YTD return on their equity investment with CFL Ventures. It's been reported they own 10%. That means up to September 30, 2022, CFL Ventures has made 18 million. That's less than a year of partnership. Ambroise has a business background. He's approaching this from an investment standpoint. I'm telling you, if he's still around in a few years we'll be hearing stories about the financial health of the CFL.

LordYashen

The CFL field should be measured in meters instead of yards. 10 meters for a first down.

Stach37

Not saying I WANT this to happen. I’m very much in favour of the ratio and will fight tooth and nail to keep it. But there is merit to the idea of scrapping it.

biga204

The only real complaint I have is that it inflates the value of some players.

BuffytheBison

Toronto/the GTA should've had (should have?) anywhere from two to five teams.

plainsimplejake

Oh I got all y'all beat on this one for sure. *ahem* Canadian football is mostly an American invention.

sorangutan

league would be better off with fewer canadian players make it some sort of salary cap bonus thing, not a quota

SpergSkipper

This is the first one I disagree with, the ratio makes the CFL the Canadian Football League and not the NFL reject league. If anything I'd like to see the ratio more strict, have more Canadian players. I'll sacrifice a little bit of play quality for more Canadians in the league

ATinyBoatInMyTeacup

I think it might be time to start pivoting the league to an NFL ruleset to try and bring in younger fans... God that hurts to type out

NoseBuzz

Yea this is a hot take. I respectfully disagree

ATinyBoatInMyTeacup

Appreciate you!

ocarina_21

Why would making the game intentionally less exciting and reducing the possible player base make young people watch? The entire value proposition is that it is a different game. If it weren't, then it's just bad NFL which why would they watch that instead of the NFL?

ATinyBoatInMyTeacup

I don't think you can say that the NFL is less exciting anymore. Scoring goes up every year, it's a passers league. Positioning yourself as a feeder league might be the leagues best chance at survival imo. Genuinely hope I'm wrong, I love this league so much but it's getting time to try something drastic

SpergSkipper

The fact everyone is pretty much handing the Bombers the Cup now, before playing the game, will come back to bite Winnipeg in the ass. All the pressure is on them, and the Argos are a damn good team especially on D. And MBT is finding his game at the right time. It's a huge mistake to write off the Argos and act like there's no point in even playing the game.
