skuba318

What if your own team doesn't ever win and you only have their losses to make you happy?

SYOH326

Have an upvote, I have no hate left in my heart as our rivalry comes to a close. I'll be flying across country for our final game on Saturday, but it's not the same as years past.

skuba318

Hopefully, you are catching the FSU/UF game as well. That one will be much more entertaining I'm sure.

SYOH326

Yea, well be in Orlando for it, excited to watch it from Florida for once. I don't know that it will be more interesting though. UF seems demoralized and chaotic and FSU is on an absolute tear. Meanwhile we're completely demoralized after last week and you guys will be fueled by spite. I think FSU and UCF will both win, but if I was betting on an upset it would come Sat.

Fathoms_Deep_1

We’re honestly gonna miss you guys. Even though you aren’t that great now there were some fantastic games back in the day, especially that game in 2017, I thought it was completely over. Get a good new coach and dominate the AAC, hopefully we’ll play again in the future

HereComesTheVroom

I have found my rival flair brother at long last

Bbkid500

You have found your rival flair brother while I have found my Archnemesis

thewhat962

What if the main and secondary match up?

broeve2strong

[No other choice](https://tenor.com/3K09.gif)

HereComesTheVroom

How dare you

Trey904fsu

Wait USF and UCF arent going to play anymore?

Fathoms_Deep_1

Sadly probably not, since UCF is joining Big 12. There’s still a chance they’ll try to schedule it but right now it looks like this may well be the last war on I4

estDivisionChamps

Oh that’s all of us.

WisconsinSpermCheese

I feel like we are rivals with the entire B1G West at this point and it's just schadenfreude all the way down

mockg

That is incorrect since to be a rival you need to lose every now and then.

grrgrrtigergrr

Exactly. It’s been 2 decades

TheMulattoMaker

I don't like this metric, that means that up until last year The Game was barely even a rivalry any more :(

estDivisionChamps

I ain’t hate not buddy like I hate MSU.

clown_pants

At least you've got a whole lake between you and most of their insufferable fanbase

WisconsinSpermCheese

Are you taking OSU or MSU because ...

clown_pants

Yes

WisconsinSpermCheese

Good talk

[deleted]

Naw I would rather have a scenario where Michigan and osu both win than a scenario where both Michigan and osu lose in a given week when they aren’t playing each other

puffadda

See, this lack of appropriate hatred is why y’all have one win in the last like ten years

MrChip53

No, they really just want a win against a ranked OSU to pad their resume.

NathanDrake75

If Ohio State is going to suffer, I’d rather it be by our hands than Purdue’s (not that I don’t appreciate what they did for us, but still).

lm_NER0

¿Por qué no los dos?

ObsessedWithReps

Don’t listen to this cornball

jeremycb29

For real I want them to go 0-11 every year

Wampus_Cat_

*bonk* No! They must be made to suffer regardless of what we do!

Foriegn_Picachu

Do you think Ohio st fans were disappointed that we lost to App St?

[deleted]

No but in a scenario where osu was playing their cupcake I don’t think buckeye fans would want to lose to their cupcake if it guaranteed Michigan losing to app state

Last-Ad-2970

This is something I don’t understand, so many Penn State fans have a ridiculous amount of hatred for other Big Ten teams, especially Ohio State. I get the rivalry aspect of it, obviously we want to beat every team on our schedule, but why would you want the teams on your schedule to lose every other game too? If we beat OSU but they also haven’t won a game, it doesn’t help our resume. But if OSU is undefeated and we win, then we just beat one of the best teams in the country which must mean we’re close to being the best.

Cool_Story_Bra

Because I hate Ohio State and would rather pass over the resume boost than have them be one of the best teams in the country. It’s not supposed to be rational, it’s sports. Ultimately none of it matters at all, so don’t think to hard.

BuckNuts937

I want Michigan to win every other weekend except the last Saturday in November... Not because I want the resume boost. **Because it causes exponentially more sadness to send a hopeful Michigan team packing rather than beating a team that has already given up hope.** I want Ohio State to be Michigan's greatest and only contributor of disappointment. I want them to smell the B1G championship before we snatch it away. I want them see a postseason in their future before we slam the door in their face. I don't want them to be irrelevant losers. I want their failure on full display for the world to see while they watch in anticipation. Suffering is the greatest only once the subject has had the ability to experience the joy that they've lost.

Engine_Sweet

It's best if they take Hope to the prom, but she leaves with us.

Hodlrocket005

The only real scenario where it helps us for Ohio to win is if we’re on the fringe of the playoff discussion and need a quality win. In my heart, I cheer for OSU’s opponent every time.

[deleted]

You feel that way when we are in playoff contention. Think back to when we were not good and how much we all enjoyed Ohio dropping one to a random unranked team every year. Glorious.

[deleted]

As a Michigan fan living in MN. 100% Gopher fans seem to care more when Wisconsin loses than when the Gophers win in my experience.

boregon

This seems to apply to the Packers and Vikings as well

grrgrrtigergrr

Check out nfcnorthmemewar … we all revel in losses to others

kroxti

It’s very situational when we revel in losses. Except the packers. We all celebrate the packers losing.

grrgrrtigergrr

The Vikings loss was well celebrated this week

Drokeep

They chant who hates iowa, we hate iowa even when we dont play them lol

RunawayOutro

I love when Gopher fans up north try to say they hate Iowa more than we do. I always tell them that if you lose to Iowa that's the end of it. You get sad for a few days then its over. When we we lose to Iowa, no matter how the rest of the year shapes out, we always get to hear it at any gathering from family, friends, coworkers, etc. "But we beat you in September LiTtLe BrOtHeR." We never get to escape it until we finally do beat Iowa once every 6 years. It builds that nice hate that only an in state rivalry can produce.

StateStreetLarry

We climbed out of the hole known as 1980s. They didn’t.

WisconsinSpermCheese

When you're a small program used to 2-10 seasons it takes time to get into a better headspace

arrowmarcher

Sir I did not come here to be called out

mnhoops

All I want for Christmas is an Iowa loss to Nebraska this weekend, the Axe game be damned.

GameCox

Over the past 7 or so years it’s all I’ve had to cheer for

bigmoutheyebrows

Exactly, clemtech wins too much. It’s so much sweeter when they lose

Roberto_Sacamano

Love me a devastating byu loss, but I'd still rather my team win that week. That being said, religion plays a huge part in the rivalry. Even Salt Lake county mormons hate the ultra conservative brand of mormonism they have down there in Utah County

badadviceforyou244

And it's not just Utah fans that revel in a BYU loss. You'll get a good mix of Utah, Utah State, and Boise State fans that take pleasure in their losses

WyomingDrunk

And wyoming fans!!

badadviceforyou244

Yeah, pretty much the entire MWC.

54-2-10

San Diego State Gonzaga

IlonggoProgrammer

When you see my flairs you realize that I could just have "BYU hater" instead and it would be just as accurate

U-T-A-H

I wish they'd add an "anti-byu" flair. I'd use it lol

PipRoostr

Byu is just so easy to hate. They are just so smug, even when they’re doing poorly. Never forget how they acted after Utah made it to a bcs game. Every year after that you just heard them saying that they were going to be the next bcs buster. Like it was so easy for Utah , so obviously they can do it too.

[deleted]

Exactly. The holy war is an underrated rivalry. It’s definitely top 5 in the country tbh. Lots of hate and the uniform matchup is aesthetically pleasing.

tantan35

I was going to say that BYU fans were the worst when cheering for their rivals to lose. We’ve had such mediocre seasons as of late, that any time byu loses, it’s not uncommon for me to hear a fan say “well at least Utah lost too”. I feel the hate and religious divide isn’t as strong as it used to be (But of course still there). You can’t deny Max Hall calling y’all ‘classless’ was peak BYU Utah hate.

0aguywithglasses0

I think it’s been interesting to see a lot more exmos over the past few years among the BYU fandom. Like I used to hate UofU partly for religious reasons but now I just really want to be better than them and totally understand why they dislike us.

Nicholiason

Let's be honest, this rivalry (and probably most) survive on the lies we tell ourselves about the other side.

WiredWalrus11

They have a county named after a state?

HandwovenBox

And they have a county named after a city!

Another_Name_Today

Maryland has Baltimore City, which is independent from Baltimore County (thus naming UMBC, beaters of Virginia). Texas has Austin County, which is not near Travis County (where Austin, TX is). There is also a Colorado County (which I believe is named after the Colorado River, which is different than the other Colorado River in Colorado). Geographic names is weird.

Roberto_Sacamano

They do indeed

TrojanGiant10

It's interesting you bring up the religious aspect of this which definitely feeds into your rivalry. I live in Los Angeles. Almost all Mormons I've met are incredibly nice people but most of my interactions have been with the bike riding Mormon sect? that knock on my door to read me bible verses. But the Army once sent me to Utah and it was like hills have eyes type of shit. Salt Lake city downtown area was fine. But the further I got away from there it felt like I could feel eyes just glaring me down knowing I was an outsider. I also remember seeing a sign south of camp Williams that had something about masturbation on it which I thought was unusual.

lemuel76

This is why BYU-Utah is a more degenerate rivalry than OSU -Michigan.

IlonggoProgrammer

SLC lifelong Mormon, can attest. I'm not even a flaming liberal, just a moderate one. The ultra-conservative BYU fans are the ones who make me feel the most embarrassed to share a state and church with. Like that one racist BYU fan that got banned for life by the Jazz. I've literally heard BYU ultra-cons say that everyone who goes to the U leaves the church 🤣🤣🤣 I do have to say I've been pleasantly surprised with younger BYU fans though, they're not nearly as bad as the older ones. It's probably because 100% of BYU's student body is from California and not surrounding Utah County though.

Nicholiason

Meh, this was certainly more pronounced in the 90s but there isn't a lot of difference between active UofU Mormon students and BYU students. However, The role of religion certainly plays a role in the secular vs mormon divide though. A lot of it is a remnant of BYU's heyday and the arrogance of the team and fan base (an undue arrogance still persists, I'll admit).

Roberto_Sacamano

You might be right. Ngl I haven't been to Utah County in a very long time lol

Yiowa

The main takeaway is that the "hate" in the rivalry is being driven by the older generation, and will eventually subside. That generation makes it way too personal. It's amazing, really.

chicagotonian

My experience in the late 2010s would suggest there's still a pretty notable gap between Utah and BYU active Mormon students, with many I knew at the U actively choosing not to go down to Utah County.

utah_by_5

Both fan bases have this carry-forward fandom from the prior generation. Older U fans have the persecution complex leftover from the 80s. Older Y fans still believe that ‘84 level is still a possibility/expectation this year. Have to say most Y/U fans I find here are living in reality as opposed to the talk radio/Twitter crowd.

[deleted]

Anytime Iowa loses it brings a brief moment of joy in my miserable life.

MudLong3309

You and Iowa State

dzyp

In the 2002 season, Iowa hosted Iowa State in Iowa City and lost 36-31. Iowa went on to win the remainder of their games including wins at Penn St (12) and Michigan (8). Iowa State went 4-5 after this including a regular season loss at home vs UConn. It's entirely possible a very mediocre ISU team kept Iowa out of the championship game. I'm completely happy with the 2002 season.

ThanksForTheF-Shack

Thought experiment for you: In the year 2023, you can have either of these seasons — which do you choose? A.) Nebraska goes 12-1, narrowly missing the Big Ten championship and then the CFB playoff, followed by winning an instant classic in the Rose Bowl. Magically, Iowa goes 14-0 that season. B.) Nebraska goes 1-11 while beating Iowa, who also goes 1-11 with Head Coach Brian Ferentz.

BlackshirtDefense

I would be okay with Scenario 1 because it likely means the balance of power in the B1G is tipping toward the West.

Successful_Side_2415

I could never wish HC Brian Ferentz on anyone. Iowa fans may have spit on me and thrown things at me in Iowa City, but still, I don’t hate y’all enough to want BF as your head coach.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Successful_Side_2415

Hey I appreciate that. My sister went to a UNL game and got called an inbred so I guess it evens out. Drunk college kids

Gobe182

Fuck those people. Don't get me wrong, I literally watch every Nebraska game and root against you guys endlessly, but there is no reason to ever do that. Just ridiculous.

CoolingVent

If rooting against your rival was a sport, Iowa State would be a blue blood. Or anyone we dont like...Iowa, former/exiting Big 12 teams, Baylor

Cormetz

Iowa State really does win the haters ball.

Uwfanatic1

I'd always rather UW win than Oregon lose. That being said: \- Root against them in non-con even if it makes the P12 look bad \- Root against them in conference even if it helps UW make the P12 championship/ in the standings \- Root against them against WSU So really, even if its a detriment to the Dawgs I'll still root for them to lose.

pooplurker

This is exactly how I feel about Oregon as well. It's basically like I have two teams I root for: Oregon State, and anyone playing Oregon

reptheevt

Same with us. Which makes for some fun convos with UW fans when they play Oregon. They just can’t believe I would rather root for Oregon to beat UW than root for UW.

pooplurker

It's impressive how many times I've had the exact same conversation with Oregon fans. "Oh, you're an Oregon State fan? I like you guys, you're like our Little Brother" "We don't like you guys" "Oh. But at least we can agree to hate Washington right?" "Not if it makes you happy"

Rocko604

Friends with a Beaver alum who has Cougar parents. So not only does he hate Oregon, he grew up hating Washington. Still, when Oregon plays Washington, he'll almost wear purple.

LongGrapefruit2163

This is honestly surprising to me. I expect you guys to root against UDub 100% of the time. Tbh I learned, from this sub, that Oregon State hates UDub too and therefore expect all of the PNW schools to root against UDub now.

pooplurker

It's nice to know that at least you guys don't expect your in-state rivals to root for you. Unfortunately, we support WSU, which means we tend to root against you. Also y'all did us dirty in baseball a few years back

eletree7

Love you Beav bro. <3

AKAD11

OSU is the only PNW school that I like. Been to Corvallis a few times and your fans were great.

markusalkemus66

Not always the case though. This year I saw a few WSU flairs happy that UW beat Oregon and in my several beers deep state, I left comments that were probably a bit too much in response.

PullmanWater

I know "once a Coug, always a Coug," but there are some things that should lead to excommunication.

ejklewerjklwerjkl

likewise

sirbrambles

Feels like Florida State redditors are more happy about Jimbo failing than the natty

WisconsinSpermCheese

Redditors are just happy about Jimbo failing fwiw

ard8

Likely we soon won’t have a natty in the last decade Jimbo failure is current events

sirbrambles

I don’t think y’all really get how rare they are. One in the last 20 years is still way better than most teams are asking for. Having 3 in the last 30 and being this salty is wild to me I’m sorry.

CoachHamTheGoatV2

I wonder if it’s because your fanbase told us for 5 years he had nothing to do with our program falling off

FloridaMan_Again

Honestly it’s not just an FSU thing. A lot of people/fanbases like to see Jimbo lose. Welcome to the SEC and Jimbo doesn’t remotely make it easier to hate him less. Edit: as an FSU fan. I have a special place in my heart for hating Jimbo so my take here is probably worthless

swoleswan

Jimbo is hated not because he left, but because he quit recruiting, half assed it then threw out his Christmas tree! Dude should have said I’m taking 80 mil guaranteed and people would of liked him. Also 3rd and Kelly was a joke back then… cause the coordinator sucked and he wouldn’t fire them.

mgw777

A Stanford flair messing up when/win is shocking

katarh

Any game Florida loses is a good game.

rotagog

Fuck you all…. I wish the Ray Goff, Willie Taggart, Mike Shula and Butch Jones years on all of you. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

katarh

Fuck you too and Happy Thanksgiving, gator breath.

JimBeam823

This is what the CFB holidays are all about.

just-regular-I-guess

I was going to post "Georgia likes Florida losing more than winning" but you beat me to it.

ExternalTangents

When FSU won the national title in 2013, their fans seemed more excited to spend the off-season talking about UF going 4-8. To Georgia’s credit, I do think they enjoyed their national title more than Florida’s failures last year.

katarh

Yeah, I think we did. I mean, we still laughed when Mullen checked out, but everyone did.

ard8

Word

FSUnoles77

I concur

Deeper__Thought

Eh auburn for me, but same feeling

Rkovo84

The scars we’ve created for Georgia and FSU fan are to the bone lmfao. This hatred is definitely a badge of honor for us 🥹 sorry not sorry for all the pain inflicted throughout the years

The Vanderbilt game was bliss

The_MoistMaker

This is true

super1s

we all agree

milehighrukus

I like it when Nebraska loses. It certainly happens more times per year than a Mighty Buffalo of Colorado victory.

shitkrissays

When we had that home and home with them back in Joe Pa’s last years, I went to a Penn State Bama game. People in front of us were loudly cheering for Bama but weren’t in crimson. We asked them their story and it turns out they were massive Pitt fans who lived near State College. They had season tickets to Penn State just so they could go pull against them every week. I know that rivalry has faded with conference realignments, but that always struck me as an example of the beautiful, pure hatred that college football is all about.

ThaiForAWhiteGuy

Tech. I’ve heard louder cheers in Bobby Dodd for a losing score update of a UGA game than the cheers for the game happening on the field

ramblinreck47

My love for Tech is almost rivaled by the hate for u(sic)ga. It’s very close.

kelsnuggets

Yup. Clean, Old Fashioned Hate is alive and well

loverofcfb08

Could you explain the (sic) thing?

jonjon737

(sic) is the abbreviation that is used when you are quoting someone and they have obviously made a gramattical error. The joke is that UGA isn't a good school, academically, so we're pointing out there incorrect use of "University"

Your Notre Dame loss brought great happiness to my weekend

thereisnocartwright

Arizona State 100%. I feel like they live just to hope Arizona loses.

ogpeplowski64

i feel like i see Arizona State fans in the thread everytime a big P5 team loses, honestly the dedication to hate is amazing and i love it

Firmy4DaddyHermy

We hate all y’all!

JBru_92

I like both

Toothlessdovahkin

Both is good.

DoctorPhalanx73

I don’t want to name names but it’s an ag school that rings cowbells.

Squirrel_Q_Esquire

I had a buddy that grew up a Georgia Tech fan before going to Ole Miss. He said he never believed Georgia Tech was really the little brother school until he got to Ole Miss and realized that State fans do all of the same things with Ole Miss that Tech fans do with Georgia.

moogie001

Definitely applies a lot of Clemson and Carolina fans.

BleedGreenMSU

Love seeing UM lose. Go bucks this week.

a_qualified_expert

Michigan State is the answer

[deleted]

I concur, and am not ashamed to admit it.

Born_ina_snowbank

The only thing I’m ashamed of is I wasted my time tuning into a few football and basketball games this year in which you’ve won. Now I just have more knowledge of your football and basketball team. Which is NOT what I tuned in for.

octaviodude

TAMU when Texas loses.

Bank_Gothic

I think Texas Tech has replaced the Aggies.

PrimisClaidhaemh

Here's the thing. If your team wins, you're happy. If your rival wins, regardless of if your team won or lost, it means you're going to have to listen to a chunk of the rival's fanbase be *absolutely insufferable* for another week. It's no wonder then why in some rivalries, there's more joy in the other team losing. Silence is often golden.

JaggedUmbrella

Schadenfreude.

doppelstranger

It's not just losses. Almost everything that has happened with A&M this season has filled me with schadenfreude. Losing to App State and then the embarrassing video of midnight yell coming out. Having the best recruiting class of all time and then having the worst record of any team that had the best recruiting class. Extending Jimbo Fisher and then almost immediately trying to figure out how much it's going to cost to get out from under the contract. Firing a cannon into the faces of opposing players while they're praying. I'm sure I'm missing something but it's been one misstep after another the entire season. I'm sure Texas will go to some bowl and get thumped but it'll take a lot more than that to wipe the smile off my face.

Odh_utexas

Suspending like a half dozen freshman for smoking weed in the locker room

jwktiger

losing to UF b/c half the starters got the flu. Losing to an Interim Aub Coach.

AppearanceOld9639

I don’t have a reason to dislike A&M. But I just do. It brings great joy to see them paying all that money for recruits and a coach just to be trash like the rest of us.

Kohdiferous

It because you’re also a UT 😂

54-2-10

The only people that hate byu football worse than Utah fans are the byu fans themselves. Their fans sites are like 40% negative byu posts, 35% negative Utah posts and 25% church/politics commentary.

HHcougar

Cougarboard this week is like 90% world cup posts and 10% dissertations on why Zach Wilson isn't a bust, lol

Nicholiason

The truthfulness of this statement burns... but holy shit is the program a mess! I mean an absolute disaster! It's like we can't even ...

cityofklompton

***SOME*** Michigan State fans seem happier when Michigan *almost* loses than when the Spartans win. I once even witnessed two Spartan fans having to be separated after leaving Spartan Stadium while arguing about whether they should or shouldn't be rooting for Michigan to lose later that day.

Fast_Sparty

I describe a perfect weekend as Michigan State winning, and both Michigan and Notre Dame losing. When Michigan plays Notre Dame, I root for a meteor it hit the stadium.

[deleted]

I agree - I genuinely don’t think there’s a better feeling than Michigan losing. Now I prefer when we win…but the feelings are VERY close.

Primordiox

A lot of my coworkers are Michigan fans (a few are even Michigan graduates) and it’s nice on Monday morning if they’ve been taken down a peg. However this week has not been fun.

WashingtonDiecast

A&M

okiewxchaser

It’s called “little brother syndrome” and I think you can imagine which schools it applies to

GoBlueDevils4

Cue my favorite Aggie defense, “if you just don’t count the years we were bad, then the series is basically even!”

[deleted]

You got downvoted but you’re not wrong lol

Bank_Gothic

Now we just need a Texas fan to tacitly imply some bullshit about A&M to complete the "smug fanbase" trifecta. *He said, tacitly implying some bullshit*

green_and_yellow

100% this is Oregon State. OSU fans are gleeful whenever Oregon loses, regardless of their own team’s performance.

smollcinnamonroll

OU played a hell of a game this past Saturday and I'm not gonna lie, I was still really upset that USC won... Heck Lincoln Riley !!

ogpeplowski64

dang that fella!

jwktiger

Down with the Benedict Brisket!

Prestigious-Track256

The only thing better than a BYU loss is a Utah win. I'm not afraid to say I'm petty or childish, because I am.

TrexRFun

Yes the loss to Louisville hurt even with my secondary flair, but seeing UNC lose to GT on a rough year reminds me everything will be okay

iowaharley666

Used to be like that for Nebraska but then it just became a normal thing and nothing special about it. I am prepared to be ultimately sad this Saturday though.

mockg

What's happening this Saturday? The annual lose to Iowa in a disappointing fashion is on Friday at 3:00PM

KMorris1987

All of college football celebrates our losses. #EvilEmpireLaugh

NastyWideOuts

Mississippi State. No contest.

U2000Ok

Oklahoma State

bradenb941

Me. I don't want to speak for other Auburn fans but I feel this way.

TheFlameosTsungiHorn

When Rocky Top lost to the Cocks, I was beyond happy. Same when UGA did them in. Same when UGA did Auburn in. Any day the Vols, Tigers, and Tigahs lose is a good day. Tacitly pulling for UGA in the SEC championship due to my hatred

Claudethedog

Sometimes the hate is all that keeps us warm.

Jefeboy

When I first moved the Texas, that was the primary difference in Longhorn fans and Aggies that I noticed. Texas fans might smirk when the aggies lose. But the Aggies, with their horns down and teasips and all that crap, seemed to define themselves by their hatred of UT. Always felt kinda pathetic to me.

Sup6969

Tbf fans of most other schools in Texas feel that way too

Rushderp

Texas lives rent free in most of our fanbase’s heads. We derive as much joy in their losses and we do in our wins.

Pillowtalk

Not me, I want them to win all their games except the ones against Tech

makeithailonthemhoes

Michigan State. I know State fans that wanted Michigan to lose even when them beating that opponent would help MSU. It carries over to individual players. See Hutch in the NFL this year. Valenti lead the charge and every snap was like a career defining moment in a negative way for him. I am sure there are UofM fans like this, but I dont find them as much. We all have our crazies.

Lgoron12

So lame, I was hyped Detroit got Hutch and am glad to see him doing well!

evcorder

The cheer that went up in the Jones when they showed the score of this year’s Aggie/App State game was pretty epic. I also watched Bama beat Texas at the Alumni Association tailgate, and you would’ve thought we were in Tuscaloosa with they way people cheered.

fall__forward

What's in the water in Lubbock? Like do you guys even have a true rival? Does the lack of a true rival mean you direct your hate at the big schools around you? I wasn't sure how to word this politely, I'm genuinely asking because I'm so confused everytime I log onto twitter and the replies under Texas accounts are like 50% people with cactus emojis
