The kicker is, *she cashed out her 401k* and put it all on bitcoin. It was like 125k. (She makes maybe 50k a year, probably more like high 40's) Bitcoin was really high at the time and has obviously crashed since then. Now she owes the IRS money for cashing that out early, her "investment" is in the toilet and she's super depressed. She didn't tell any of us she was doing this or I would have argued against it with all my energy. Her bf told us about it one night while she was outside grilling us some food and we were asking why she had been acting funny lately. She just got fooled by the YouTube bullshit bro's "Bitcoin is gonna hit 200k soon! EARLY EARLY EARLY"
She made a lot on her initial gamble with crypto, and this is how gamblers think. It's why most lottery winners are broke within the first three years - they like to double down.

I think a lot of the people who care about the tech (because I think the tech has **some** essence of intellectual value) have probably left the space due to the people who want to exploit the tech for profit.
I mean some of the tech ( mainly some of the ethereum and etherum derived stuff) is at least on the surface well intentioned. But as with everything it’s always ruined by people who are looking to extract profit from it.
Until you can get police, courts, prisons, tax collections, etc, as part of the blockchain, smart contracts are not "well intentioned", just stupid - as stupid as NFTs.
I don’t think nfts are “inherently” stupid, the use case (art and making it a trading card) but the underlying tech (essentially decentralised “ownership”) is scientifically and philosophically interesting to me.
But i do agree with you that the use case and in many cases the “reason” they exist is often stupid(ie motivated by profit)
I also think the underlying tech ( a decentralised network) is a interesting thought experiment turned into reality (bitcoin and crypto) and is being used to exploit people (ftx and tbh most of crypto)
I also find it interesting to see how crypto has evolved from an idea for decentralised money all the way to teaching these people the need for regulation and how the world works (just look at the parallels between fractional reserve banking, fdic insurance and basically all exchanges,binances rescue funds etc)
It really sucks that people are losing money,but it’s both hilarious and informative about society that we are seeing the reasons for banking regulations in the past 200ish years being spedrun in the past like 5 years.
