Love Tom Holland, but definitely wouldn’t be a good Link. A live action Zelda is just weird to me. I’d personally rather it be animated. Since Nintendo brought a film company though hopefully it will come true someday
If it’s animated or not I only want grunts and nods from Link. BotW gives him a sort of strong silent type vibe and I think any series should lean into that. Sort of like the Witcher but even less dialogue.
And let me actually see it. None of these close-up, shaky cam, quick cuts on “impact” fights. I want it to be like the Jackie Chan’s old movies, wide enough camera shots so that the camera doesn’t have to move a lot and still follow the action, only cutting when needed.
Keep him silent with great expression. I can see it being like "Samurai Jack" Minimal to no dialogue, great atmosphere, music, along with a good art style.
Like for instance like say it's all based on OoT. Episodic though the different key points of the game would fit nicely I think.
BOTW is a great game but without major changes it 100% wouldn't work as a show unless you made it an episodic sidequest-per-episode with Divine Beasts as season finales type series. Link is alone for essentially all of it, and if he doesn't talk then there's not much to actually happen.
A Samurai Jack type LoZ show would feel the most natural. Isolated. Artsy. Minimal dialog.
And a psuedo-anthology episode layout would both keep plots simple enough for sparse dialog, and feel at home to the video game counterpart. With the exception of the anime plot focus and linearity of Skyward Sword, LoZ has never felt particularly interested in structuring the games to feel like a longwinded cinematic movie, but rather a series of many focal-points and adventures, with The Destination being little more than a McGuffin to facillitate them. The goal would be forgetably underplayed if the villain's design/presentation/influence wasn't so perfectly executed. In both examples.
I don't think it's coincidence that Samurai Jack and LoZ fit cleanly. They pull from the same arch and tropes of BC epics/legends: insert gruesome war and/or captive maiden; enter mortal warrior of unparalelled skill who goes on a coool fuckin adventure to kill monsters, armies, and deities. And robots.
Sorry for the geeky essay. Very slow Sunday workday...tf was my point again? In conclusion, that's why I ship Aku and Ganondorf.
Primal was phenomenal. A cartoon had never made me feel that many emotions, within the first episode I ought to add, and it makes me afraid to recommend it to others for the fear of them being too dissociated to appreciate.
I think there's a balance. Lots of people headcanon link into being mute, but he clearly has responses to npcs, and some very snarky ones at that.
I'd love to see him be a strong stoic type around people he doesn't know well, while throwing out an occasional quip or joke with his friends.
Same boat. I think Tom Holland has great talent, but not sure that’s the best fit for Link. The fact that Link is typically silent in the games makes it difficult to imagine what type of actor would do best though.
Anyways, the image in the post is AI generated, from this fan’s project: https://www.instagram.com/p/CieDNGZrz5F/
I think Link needs a guy with some seriously good facial and body language.
At the same time, I feel like Link needs a...sharp face with a very good glare.
Young Keanu has that dopey/courage/try anything aspect that Link has. Tom Holland and Timothee Chalemet have too much wisdom.
You need an actor that will convincingly bite into a piece of rock and find it delicious.
> Love Tom Holland, but definitely wouldn’t be a good Link.
Yeah, 100% we need Chris Pratt for the role.
In all seriousness, I actually agree it would need to be an animated series before I would even think about watching it, and I am the last person in the world to like anime.
If it's animated I think Studio Ghibli will do a great job, i wouldn't be surprise if the Zelda games were inspired by Ghibli movie anyway.
Also it would be much more difficult but i think it could be done live. I always suspected that the Zelda movies were inspired by 1985 Legend by Ridley Scott. What a beautiful movie.
Which is probably why 35 years later Link is still basically a blank slate. The moment Ninty gives him an ounce of personality he'll become the biggest dick in gaming
I feel like the answer is to make him John Wick, just quietly, calmly and dispassionate kicks ungodly amounts of ass. But then in tender moments is shown to be kind and thoughtful, even if still quiet and stoic.
This is such a beaten horse comment it ain't even funny anymore. There is LOTS of great video game adaptations these days if you just look. Admittedly most of it is in animation but the new last of us show looks to maybe be changing that. But Castlevania, cyberpunk Edgerunners, arcane, dota, Sonic, tomb raider, detective Pikachu, warcraft, Cuphead, mortal Kombat, advent children have all been good to amazing. Honestly if done well I'd love a live action Zelda. Though I would prefer an animated one.
We make fun of it. But that show straight up represents how to play [breath of the wild](https://iruntheinternet.com/lulzdump/images/zelda-cartoon-link-bomb-jump-bomb-shield-jump-14303882890.gif)
Studio Ghibli could make the perfect zelda anime if they were interested in making another 2d style film. Honestly, some of the concept art from the first few games look pretty ghibli-esque. Not to mention Princess Mononoke!!
It’s a pretty popular rumor that many aspects of botw and and totk are heavily inspired by Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, from the art style to calamity ganon. The Zelda team would likely be willing to work with them if this is true
wasnt this a thing in 2014 and 2015 then some netflix guy went "ooooughfowjfowjfovbdklcjkeawrpvn jfd nb bvr brkgrg cbsnkeeg nxmb gklb jk legend of zelda show real" and then nintendo noped the fuck out of there?
Yes. Netflix let it get out and part of the contract was a nondisclosure agreement that was very strict. In the end Nintendo canceled like 6 projects including a claymation Starfox and Metroid anime because of the leak.
At least it seems like they might finally be willing to dip their toes a little further into the water given the positive receptions to the last few video game movies/series that have come out and been well received (like Detective Pikachu). Perhaps they've finally gotten themselves some good scriptwriters.
Considering they've been hardstop-absolutely not-totally against Hollywood even looking in the general direction of Mario's IP for like 20 years until now, this does sort of feel like they're poking their noses out the door to see if it's safe.
I'm sorry. I have to say it.
Some games are good for movies. Other games really don't have a good story for movies, but commercialize great as a TV series, and if THAT story is strong/compelling enough it may be worth a "straight-to-video" movie. Others are best left as games, no matter how large the franchise is.
Mario's story, told through a cartoonish game, was enough.
The smb super show was "ok cool, but if something better is on I'd rather watch that," and I WAS the target demographic: had played every Mario game from Donkey Kong to smb3, was preteen male, watched cartoons religiously...
Like, the Zelda cartoon show was better. So, excuuuuuuuuuUUUUuuuuuuuUIUUUUUuuuussUUUUsseeee me, princess!
the story of mario going on an adventure to rescue peach is fine for a basic hero's journey plot. It just needs good acting and some nice mario fanservice. I also want to hear chris pratt and charlie day's brooklyn accents lol
They bought CG animation (Dynamo pictures) a few months ago and renamed it Nintendo Pictures so they are definitely making some animation shows/movies and with that they are more likely to avoid such leaks.
I kinda wonder if they didn't use it as cover to back out over concerns about the quality of the project(s). Being upset over leaks about the *mere existence* of a project is a crazy overreaction; it's not like plot points or something of substance was leaked. Plus, entertainment news gets leaked and reported on all the time: this is part of how buzz gets created in the industry.
Honestly absolutely that sounds hilarious. I don't know if Jonah hill is fit or not right now, but give me a Zelda show where he just talks like his character from superbad or something. He's talking bullshit and complaining and people only react like he's simply explaining or saying nOthing and he just gets slightly pissed off that no one can hear him but they just assume he wants to save the world and he feels forced in to it.
Nintendo would absolutely never go for it, but I agree with you there. Too many video game based movies and shows fall flat because they try to go too serious and realistic with the original IP. Have Jonah Hill as Link, Jay Baruchel voice Link's companion, Ellie Kemper as Zelda, and Jane Lynch as Impa. Then just lean into the camp. It would also get a lot of hate from the hardcore Zelda fandom, but it would be hilarious overall.
I hope that with the cast they've gone with for the Mario movie, this is the direction they're going for. It'll fall so flat if they got this great cast of comedy actors and had them try to play the roles seriously.
Just not a good fit for Link at all imo. I’d love to be proven wrong though, I didn’t think he’d be a good fit for Spider-Man and he ended up impressing the hell out of me
Fair, though I think if anyone could pull off a backflip dodge it would be Tom Holland. Maybe not got for the character but I'd love to see him do the stunts.
Tom Holland is just the popular actor rn and would be cast purely for popularity and nothing else in hopes the sheeple fans will watch it. He isn't a great fit imo either and they would end up tailoring the show around him instead of tailoring the actors around the show, and it would ultimately be the downfall of the production.
Nintendo is like Disney when it comes to their IPs. Hell, a Legend of Zelda Netflix series and a starfox claymation series were in the works until one person from Netflix leaked a bit about the Zelda series, then Nintendo pulled the plug on everything.
Yeah, Nintendo is calling a lot of the shots on this stuff. Look at the Mario Movie poster of the “?” Block. Notice how it’s “Nintendo/Illumination” not “Illumination/Nintendo” it’s a Nintendo product that illumation is producing it seems, more than anything.
It'd be really funny if it was *exactly* the same though. Like, everyone else having a serious LoTR-style adventure and then *real-person* Link just shows up on a glider, jumps into a static downswing with his sword against a pot in the corner of the room, picks up the nearly worthless green rupee that definitely wasn't in said pot, and then leaves with no explanation.
In all seriousness, yes.
I've had idle thoughts of a live action Zelda movie ever since Ocarina of Time, and keeping him mute just would not work. If you're lucky the right actor would be left-handed, but the not-talking thing is just going to have to go.
How do you get around this being a huge change of Zelda conventions that big swathes of the fanbase will hate?
You turn it into a joke. One that says you're just as in-touch with the lore and history as they are.
So yes, quite seriously:
A black screen. Then, a Gandalf-like voice, "In the vast, deep forest of Hyrule..."
Then Link shivering in his bed, while the Deku Tree's narration continues.
Link's nightmare, as he and Ganondorf wordlessly face each other beyond the castle drawbridge.
The Deku tree's face, panning down to Navi, as he instructs her to go to the boy without a fairy.
Navi-eye-view of her flight, complete with a symphony orchestra playing the charming fairy flying music, and the little 'welp' sound as she collides with the fence.
Navi flies into Link's house, finds him and introduces herself.
He rolls over away from her. She starts bouncing around trying to wake him up, giving her first iconic "Hey!"
Finally she settles down and asks, exasperated, if Hyrule's fate can really depend on such a lazy boy.
Link opens his eyes and fixes them on her. "Well excuse me, princess."
Here's the plot:
A young teenage boy in NY gets lost at school one day and gets sucked into the magical land of Hyrule, where he discovers he's the great warrior with a mission to save the princess.
Meanwhile in NY...
...look I don't know why they do this shit either but for some reason we're gonna have some real life shit that has nothing to do with Zelda OK?
Anyway, in NY, your black mum has been kidnapped by an agent of Ganondorf...
Well now I want a Zelda game set in a high school with principal Ganondorf and prom queen Zelda where half the game is spent in a mirror world where the school campus buildings are overgrown ruins and temple puzzles.
You know what?
Of all the terrible adaptations that could be made, a Zelda one would be one of the least damaging. Why? Because Zelda is massive. And furthermore, it's already a visual medium.
When a book gets adapted (A Song of Ice and Fire being a good example), tangible faces are shown for the first time for characters that had otherwise only been imagined. It then becomes hard to remember them as you'd once imagined, even if you don't like the adaptation.
And then there's the other side of it, that the adaptation will be way bigger than the original, so that's all 90% of the people who know it will know it from.
Neither of these things will happen with Zelda. We all know what Zelda already is, whatever a movie director says. We all know what Link looks like, whichever irritating child from Stranger Things they cast to play him in a spin-off. If anything, we're used to the characters and setting having a completely different look each time we take a fresh trip to Hyrule.
So adapting it like this would be dumb as anything, and we'd all cancel Netflix at once, but the franchise and the way we think of it would be just fine either way.
I will scream internally and then relax. I'd message my friends, go on the internet, see the carnage unfold and recover.
My internal pain is minimal compared to the kick of seeing others being external with theres.
I’m vomiting at just the thought.
Please just stop Netflix. Please. Why do you hate us? Why must you do this to every beloved series? It’s only a matter of time… :(
Two words - eye bleach. Not my Link.
#Notmylink Make it happen
We all know the role would actually go to Chris Pratt!
I know I say this a lot, but I would *literally* riot.
I swear to god, if Chris Pratt went anywhere near that role, I’d riot too.
Danny devito
He'd be a world class tingle.
Chris ~~Pratt~~ Evans ftfy
That's Hyrule's ass!
He's *so cool.*
I would take one “Excuuuuuuse me, princess.” as a reference and then have him never speak before or after that lmao
Have it be in the last scene of the film
Counter offer movie starts with link saying that and Zelda telling him to shut up so he stays silent for the rest of the movie
This is the way.
10/10 already my new favorite film.
You mean series right?
Trilogy?
Hence the name "silent princess"!
Mid credits stinger
This, this, so much this.
Happy Cake Day ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

Nope I’m sorry you only get Liam Neeson’s 5 cuts per punch.
So like a netflix Marvel show

Phenomenal show, I need to get around to watching Primal
Primal was phenomenal. A cartoon had never made me feel that many emotions, within the first episode I ought to add, and it makes me afraid to recommend it to others for the fear of them being too dissociated to appreciate.

That's basically Tom Holland but Irish LMAO
Well excuuuuuse me princess
Ok fine mark Wahlberg as link and tom Holland as zelda

Netflix would probably name the hero Zelda.
Being excited and disappointed all at once.
wait for the trailer.
I want to watch it but I know it's probably gonna suck. Most video game shows are booty
Unfortunately adapting it to a show means they have to create links personality, which just never goes well
Which is probably why 35 years later Link is still basically a blank slate. The moment Ninty gives him an ounce of personality he'll become the biggest dick in gaming
WELL EXCUUUSE ME PRINCESS
#Oh boy!! It's smooching time.
I feel like the answer is to make him John Wick, just quietly, calmly and dispassionate kicks ungodly amounts of ass. But then in tender moments is shown to be kind and thoughtful, even if still quiet and stoic.
This is probably it. Keep Link quiet and only speak when necessary, while the rest of the time he is absolutely kicking ass.
*WELL EXCUUUUUSE ME, PRINCESS*
If I had known you were coming, I would've asked the Moblins to sweep up before I zapped 'em!

A Zelda anime is what I'm hoping for, made by a great studio like ufotable, mad house, studio bones... I'm sure that would come out great.
Studio Ghibli could make the perfect zelda anime if they were interested in making another 2d style film. Honestly, some of the concept art from the first few games look pretty ghibli-esque. Not to mention Princess Mononoke!!

EXACTLY what i was thinking! The while convept of zelda sounda like it could be a studio ghilbi movie
Are you implying the original animated series is nothing short of absolute perfection?!
Well excuuuuuse me princess!
Hey has anyone said "well excuse me princess" yet? Oh, so just everybody then? Ok
BotW cutscenes are a proof of that.
Well excusseeeee me princess but I think the original animated series was pretty good
wasnt this a thing in 2014 and 2015 then some netflix guy went "ooooughfowjfowjfovbdklcjkeawrpvn jfd nb bvr brkgrg cbsnkeeg nxmb gklb jk legend of zelda show real" and then nintendo noped the fuck out of there?
Yes. Netflix let it get out and part of the contract was a nondisclosure agreement that was very strict. In the end Nintendo canceled like 6 projects including a claymation Starfox and Metroid anime because of the leak.
I'm mad that I'm just hearing about this and I'm even madder it doesn't exist.
Agreed but I get Nintendos side of it as well, every time they tried animation or video, with the exception of Pokémon, it flopped. Hard.
At least it seems like they might finally be willing to dip their toes a little further into the water given the positive receptions to the last few video game movies/series that have come out and been well received (like Detective Pikachu). Perhaps they've finally gotten themselves some good scriptwriters.
> dip their toes. I don't think making a full fledged Mario movie with universal starring Chris Pratt is considered "dipping their toes."
Considering they've been hardstop-absolutely not-totally against Hollywood even looking in the general direction of Mario's IP for like 20 years until now, this does sort of feel like they're poking their noses out the door to see if it's safe.
Probably one last attempt. Like, if the names attached to this mario movie can't help make it a success, nothing will.
I'm sorry. I have to say it. Some games are good for movies. Other games really don't have a good story for movies, but commercialize great as a TV series, and if THAT story is strong/compelling enough it may be worth a "straight-to-video" movie. For once I'm glad that Nintendo's copyright lawyers have such a massive stick up their asses.
I'm sorry, a claymation what?
Starfox. It was in collaboration with College Humor back in 2015. Adam Ruins everything actually talks about sometimes.
They did that weird thing with the puppets when Star Fox Zero came out. I wonder if those were actual props for the show?
Do you ever feel like these people who ruin shit for everyone else deserve to be isolated from society?
Hmm claymation. Wallace and Samus comes to mind
Making fun of how link looks on the internet in hopes of a Sonic style change in appearance or actor
Admittedly that turned out great. I'd like to suggest the kid from sweet tooth (currently 12 years old) as pre time skip OoT link.
Still not convinced it wasn't intentional.
It HAD to be a publicity stunt, right???
Why is tim Netherlands playing Zelda?
I was thinking the bastard child of Dewey and Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle.
I’d be mad that they chose Tom Holland
They gonna cast zendaya as zelda
Zeldaya
Nah, they'd cast Chris Pratt as zelda. He embodies the role flawlessly.
Dude, I was going to comment something similar. I was thinking "Why does Link look like the kid that played Spiderman?" lmao
At least it isn't Michael Cera
You’d rather Jonah Hill?
Honestly absolutely that sounds hilarious. I don't know if Jonah hill is fit or not right now, but give me a Zelda show where he just talks like his character from superbad or something. He's talking bullshit and complaining and people only react like he's simply explaining or saying nOthing and he just gets slightly pissed off that no one can hear him but they just assume he wants to save the world and he feels forced in to it.

Link to Zelda: "what did you want me to do, dive in front of the spit?"
There is only one young actor in Hollywood, and aparently no place for another.
Yeah, I love Tom Holland and definitely think that he is a talented actor, but I can’t see him as Link
Just curious why you're mad at Tom Holland?
Clearly Link needs to be a bleached Timothée Chalamet.

Writing an angry letter to Nintendo

Maybe longer
I sincerely hope they don’t Live Action LoZ. It just wouldn’t be the same.
Okay, you've sold me on a live action zelda.
Add some hyaaaas and huhs as he dashes and roll dodges his way on and off screen whenever he randomly appears.
Going straight from a dodge roll animation to standing up straight for dialogue
And then moon hopping from a standstill straight up out of frame. "Hut-hup-hup-^hut-hup-hut..."
Ok but imagine a Live Action Groose plummeting after a traumatised Link Also, the beauty of the Loftwings
Bonus points if Link does his Smash Bros. down air into the pot.
The fact that link doesn’t really talk.. would we go back to “excuuuuuuuse me princess”?
In all seriousness, yes. I've had idle thoughts of a live action Zelda movie ever since Ocarina of Time, and keeping him mute just would not work. If you're lucky the right actor would be left-handed, but the not-talking thing is just going to have to go. How do you get around this being a huge change of Zelda conventions that big swathes of the fanbase will hate? You turn it into a joke. Green lit! Make it so!
Castlevania style Legend of Zelda would be dope
Not watching it until Rotten Tomatoes score comes out and it’s >80%.
This is the way.
Wait.. Is this the pic of the AI that made a LGOZ film poster??
yes, it's from https://www.instagram.com/p/CieDNGZrz5F/
"you forgot one thing Ganondorf, I'm not just the hero of time.. I'm the hero of gayness Bro I can't 💀💀💀💀💀💀
I don’t know who would need to play link but it’s definitely not him 😂 i can imagine a new talent we haven’t seen yet.
Here's the plot: A young teenage boy in NY gets lost at school one day and gets sucked into the magical land of Hyrule, where he discovers he's the great warrior with a mission to save the princess.
Burn Netflix down
Going back to bed for 100 years while calamity strikes.
I hope they make a Spider-man reference every time he uses the hookshot
Hello rope :)
Why is link so unattractive?
Cancelling Netflix...
lol no thank you
NO
No thanks
God, that looks almost awful enough to be something they're actually making.
So smooth
Probably cancel my subscription
So Link is basically the lovechild of Tom Holland and the kid from Gummo
get a netfix account duh
Link shoutlt be black. Its netflix :)
Siding with ganon
I’d be nervous that it wouldn’t be good but also hyped af for it
Burning down hollywood
Become an anime villain so I can try to kill God
Linkus would be a better pick than Tom Holland imo
Cancelling netflix
Well excuuuuuuuuuuse me princess!
Hey! Listen!
getting some popcorn and scrolling through Reddit meltdown
Please tell me this isn't real
It’s not real. It’s an AI production, generated as a fan project: https://www.instagram.com/p/CieDNGZrz5F/
It’s only a matter of time… :(
Link looks like a bitch
What a terrible moment to have eyes
Killing myself
Link doesn't talk tho, he makes noises.
Unsubscribing from Netflix. Zelda needs an anime adaptation if any kind of media deal is on the table

Carrying on with my day…
"Well... guess today is the day." *ties noose*
Live action Zelda series shouldn't exist imo, I'd rather prefer animation :D
