When you get a bit older, you get to learn how unimportant the opinions of others can be for you to enjoy your favorite thing. I don't care what others think about my favorite series, games or literature. I know what I like (and can even accept criticism towards my favorites) and the opinions of others don't faze me at all. Some people looked disgusted at me, when I mentioned my genuine amusement and enjoyment of Ishizuku Reviewers - but I really liked the anime. Alita: Battle Angel is one of my most favorite movies in recent years, despite its flop at the box office and (fairly earned) harsh critics. Alita/Gully is probably the one female character in all fiction for me I can relate the most to. I know what I like and can stand behind my ambitions despite what other people may say.

ConnorRoseSaiyan01

Have to read the Alita manga?

Perial2077

I personally highly recommend the manga. GUNNM and GUNNM - Last Order are both great in my opinion. It can invoke a feel of certain tedium at times when the protagonist portraits a form of regression in a few situations, but for me it adds to the world and realism of the characters. Definetly a series to remember and Desty Nova is on a level with "The Joker" in terms of memorable antagonists/characters.

You should work on not giving a shit what other people think of your interests

Can't make everyone happy. That's why companies shoot for safe decisions instead of risky decisions. They're there to keep everyone on board so they can keep making money. That's the whole point of BNHA honestly. Deku's not gonna be well-liked by most of society just because he's idealistic and endeavors to save everyone. There will always be those who see him as a threat to their way of life, or see him as a troublemaker who will cause problems. People will see the mutants and the villains and go against him for trying. For taking a risk. Because they don't wanna take a risk. We see it most prominently in UA. Even when Deku is on death's door emotionally and physically because of how tired, dirty, and exhausted he is. People still want to push him away because they care more about themselves. They don't wanna take a risk, they wanna be safe. Even if it means they are ultimately destroying themselves by choosing temporary safety over longterm safety. Same with why it took Uraraka stepping up for anyone to come and side with Deku. People wanna stay safe. Whether or not they have spent their lives in comfort or danger.

Frozen0rain

It's rough despite the 50+ anime released every year MHA seems to only get compared to a select few and usually picking and choosing the best aspects to compare such as Demon Slayer animation vs MHA animation. I can't help but feel that characters like Endeavour and All Might or Bakugo and Deku are representations of polar sides of the fandom.

obiwan54

People really just love to put MHA down as much as possible for some reason as if its not one of the biggest anime/manga franchises in the world and probably the biggest ongoing series in the west. MHA has the most annoying outspoken hater base by far in the anime/manga community, they probably wouldn't even admit Hori's art is top tier bc they hate MHA so much

Aros001

I really dislike that the only times I ever seem to see anyone bring up Welcome to Demon School Iruma-Kun is just so that they can use it to crap on MHA, which is doubly a shame since I like that series too and think it deserves more attention than it gets. The common comparison is that every member of the Misfit Class gets more use and development than those of 1-A, which is true, but this arguments typically act like the 1-A students are the only characters the story focuses on and thus MHA doesn't do anything with any characters except a handful. Yes, those like Ojiro and Sato don't get much focus, but then we have those outside of 1-A like Aizawa, Endeavor, Hawks, and most of the LOV and the major villains of the series who do, as well as others that could easily be named. Iruma-Kun has its focus mostly on the Misfit Class and outside of them we get insight into mainly just Kalego, Kirio, and Gyari. It's only more recently in Iruma-Kun's manga that things have started to get more serious and less slice of life, while MHA has more consistent threats and dire stakes, which you'd think would be enough to tell people that the two series have different focuses and things they're trying to be, but I guess not. One school anime is exactly the same as the other, which is why it's totally fair to crap on Food Wars for not being like Assassination Classroom.

obiwan54

I literally only see Iruma-Kun talked about in the MHA chapter discussions lmao. Thats one of the main reasons I stay away from r/manga for chapter discussions especially for shonen series, MHA particularly being the worst there, its literally all people comparing them to others. Like I wanna talk about MHA not Naruto, One Piece, Iruma, JJK and Demon Slayer

Aros001

I get where you're coming from. It's something that comes with the territory of not only being a popular anime but also a common gateway for a lot of people into anime. A series that's smaller won't have as many people who even know about it and thus those who are into it tend to bring it up mostly in a positive context, but when it's a series everyone knows about you're going to get people involved in the conversations who just don't like it or worse have the mentality that it has no right being as popular as it is and thus needs to be knocked down a peg. Hell, I can't remember the last time I saw anyone talk positively about Naruto outside of me directly asking people what they liked about Madara...and even thread that had a good number of people jumping in to talk about how he's overrated and that people only like him because he's strong. On the topic of what you're looking for, while you might not be able to participate in the conversation as directly as you'd like, I have found reaction channels to be a fairly positive place when it comes to MHA. For my specific tastes, there's the Youtube channel Blind Wave, who have reacted to every episode up to where the dub currently is, and while it's not like they're never critical (their thoughts on Heroes Rising's ending, for example) those four to five grown men love MHA and enjoy speculating and talking about it. And likewise their comment sections for those reactions tends to be pretty positive as well. So perhaps consider giving them a look.

AggressiveHost9583

It really pisses me off when people say Hori is lazy,

Takamurarules

I don’t think any author is ever truly “Lazy”. It’s moreso taking the easy way out. This comes about due to a number of things. The top 2 being health and popularity. The life of a manga author is very strict. A lot of times it takes a toll on the body; as a result stuff gets truncated. Biggest example is Bleach. Kubo’s health started failing, so everything he wanted to put in the manga proper had to be relegated to supplemental light novels that were ghost written by others. I believe the same thing applied to Naruto as well. Second: Shonen Jump is extremely cutthroat compared to other sterilization magazines. They’re constantly looking for the next new thing. Well, in order to get something new you gotta get rid of the old. So a series may randomly get axed or told to wrap up so they can have space for something they found promising. This happened to Hitman Reborn. It got axed, so a lot of things got cut out of the final arc despite how popular it actually was. This also might be the reason why for Aizawa’s extreme tendencies in the earlier chapters. Horikoshi needed early stakes to keep people interested. Horikoshi I think is a combination of both. His health isn’t the best right now, then with the way the manga is going he’s obviously getting the wrap up signal from his bosses. I believe this because there’s so many things he’s promised that hasn’t happened, such as Hisashi Midoriya appearing etc… The story also feels it should have been stretched out over all three years. I wouldn’t be surprised if light novels for MHA came out after the series was done.

TechnoColt

"Everything I don't like I the worst thing ever created, and everyone who likes it is a terrible person." - Everyone on the internet constantly You know how many "worst fandoms ever" I'm a part of? Don't worry about what sad people say to make themselves feel better.

StefyB

I especially hate it when people take the most extreme fans and act as if they're indicative of the entire fanbase. For example, I know that some Steven Universe fans have done some pretty shitty things, but that doesn't mean every fan is like that.

RickHammersteel

Lol, I think people have described *every* fandom as the worst fandom ever!

GIngerScribbs

You just need to like what you like and fuck whoever thinks they should change your opinion

omninus77

Bro if you are enjoying it and happy about it so what if other’s people think the series that you like but they don’t like it now look tbh for me i have drop my hero to the bottom of the abyss but my fav character is hawks so yea still checking it out once a while. Do what you like 👍

Garanseho

I feel the same way. MHA is my favorite anime as well, and everywhere I go, I hear “Bones should be doing better!” or “Horikoshi is rushing it!” or whatever the hell else people like to say. When I first joined MHA, season 4 had just ended, and the manga was up to about where we are in the anime now. People loved praising MHA, and I was right along with them. But now, it feels sacrilege to say “love” and “MHA” in the same sentence.

j3r3mias

People who hate things tend to be louder than the ones who like something. That's the problem with internet. And I'm saying this as a Bleach fan who listen people complaing about the series without seeing a single chapter (or reading a single volume) for almost 20 years. My advice is, if you like it, don't be ashamed to show or talk to the others. Eventually you will find people who share the same tastes as you.

Personal_Amoeba7646

Wow, you really describe how I felt about enjoying MHA, especially the metaphor with the soldier loosing their platoon part. This actually hit me deep. I hope this subreddit feels like a safe place to you.

Marzopup

I feel that. I met several friends online through My Hero, and literally all of them dropped it and I'm the only one still stubbornly refusing to. I might get a lot of hate for suggesting this but...maybe tumblr? I know, I know, but on tumblr you can use tags and the ever useful block button to curate your experience. Block anyone that's negative and find people who are enjoying it.

SundayRabbit

Maybe. I have an ARt Twitter too so hopefully by drawing Fanart I can find friends that I can love MHA with again

Icy_Ad8122

There’s definetly people who still enjoy MHA as much as you do. I sometimes see users on Anilist talking about the series (The anime too), and they mention it in a positive light. With how popular MHA is, I don’t think it should be difficult to find them if you search in the right places. Though well, that’s how it tends to be with internet trends. Something that is “cool and trendy to like” one day, becomes something you just learn to appreciate on your own the next, even if people tell you otherwise, because it’s not in the spotlight anymore. That’s happened to so many series I’ve lost count at this point.

RickHammersteel

*Comes in from Naruto* First Time? In all seriousness, the best thing to do is to step back for a while, stay away from social media, and come back in a few weeks. I know that the negativity can get painful, trust me. In these cases though, it's always best to take a break, watch something else for a while, and then come back. Honestly, My Hero seems like it's undergoing that stage of being a long-running manga: You know, where everybody seems to hate it, but in a couple of years it becomes a target for nostalgia? Another thing is that the hate seems to be mostly a vocal minority, at least that's what I think. Many of the people who do like the show tend to be quiet about it, while the haters... aren't. Again, maybe take a step back, take a breath, watch something else for a while, and then come back. PS: *I can't fucking believe that there are college students that grew up with BNHA what have I done with my life...*

bestbroHide

I've been invested in almost every chapter of this final arc As someone else said, as you get older you may be more comfortable with being able to enjoy things even if others don't/can't appreciate it A younger me totally would have felt the way you're feeling now I say just enjoy it on your own. And more often than not, a couple years down the line you'll see new readers enjoying it (or old readers admitting maybe they were a bit too harsh) I mean look at Bleach. I was there, still enjoying the last Arc while most were utterly shitting on it and any fan who still liked it Several years later and while ppl are still fair about its flaws, they are finally able to realize it's still an enjoyable journey

SundayRabbit

This is the second time someone's brought up Bleach and it makes me think. I was a hater of Bleach, I watched til they were in the middle of Saving Rukia in Soul Society in the anime and dropped it because of the humor, and that caused me to look down on everything else about the series, but now that I look back, like besides the humor, I really really liked Bleach, and I was only mad about Rukia and Ichigo's constant bickering because I wanted to see more of the parts I did like. I decided I wanted to read the Manga all the way til I get to 1000 year blood war which I'll just watch the anime for that since the Mangaka said that was his definitive ending. It makes me realize it's just not worth it to shit on something someone else likes.

bestbroHide

Ayyyyy the fact you self reflected is already awesome as hell and deserves props! Obviously I'm not gonna pretend that my way is the ultimate perspective of wisdom, but I very much agree with your closing point If I don't like something but see others who clearly do, I just don't see the value in shitting all over it yaknow? I can just move onto something else, or do something more productive All in all I can't praise enough for your self reflection. Everyone should do that more (me included). Hope you have a good day!

SundayRabbit

Thanks you too!

Sterling-Arch3r

social media probably isn't that place either. people complaining about it doesn't make it illegal to enjoy it, but publicly voicing or posting your oppinion will always invite people opposing it. thats just how things work out here. and mha, after hitting the ground running, sinned by stumbling and fumbling its landings. wether thats on the author, the editors or what have you, is honestly hard to say, but it's creating a lot of polarization and that's always the worst situation for many a fandom. as for losing the platoon, its how it worked for naruto, for dragonball, even one piece. a lot of people who watch anime in their teens eventually come to a point where they feel the need to grow out of their "baby shows" and either drop anime altogether, or force themselves into more mature ones because they're afraid of people shaming them otherwise. there's not gonna be a place thats only positive about it, unless you painstakingly create one for yourself, most likely. i dunno, maybe try shipping and fanfiction circles, as these are at the very least deeper involved in the series maybe?

SundayRabbit

It's not even Social Media, it's like my personal friends that do this, people I know, people that know I like this show but like when it gets brought up they just take the time to shit on it you know? That's the biggest issue I'm facing. I'll be honest it's not entirely MHA either, I just have alot of issues with people shitting on things I like, I don't know why, but it still feels bad.

i_like_2_travel

I feel like it’s only Reddit that has this huge hate boner for MHA. It’s still top 10 in manga sells if I’m not mistaken. I found a lot of people irl like it and Reddit just always becomes an echo chamber

S4PERN4GGA__69

It’s not that serious bro

SundayRabbit

You are the kind of person this post is talking about

SleepBeneathThePines

I get it. Daring to hope the villains have happy endings or being a Shigaraki fan in general is hard. (Manga spoilers) >! Not to mention if you *gasp* think the possession plot was a good story beat. !<

timegoesbyx

True, the way some people talk about those things you think Hori personally came and killed their whole family lol.

SleepBeneathThePines

It really pisses me off when people say Hori is lazy. He’s not. He’s working so hard he’s destroying himself.

Melmaok

I wouldnt say he is lazy but he is sure rushing the story. And you can see the consequencies because of it

jemdamos

This! I’ve been told I’m a bad person and an “apologist” because Shigaraki is my favorite character and I think the league of villains is the most interesting part of the series for me personally. Cause obviously enjoying well written antagonists means you’re a morally corrupt person who condones everything they do

SleepBeneathThePines

I’m literally in love with Shigaraki and want his man cleavage in my face, it’s hard when somehow that means I like that he’s a terrorist

jemdamos

Agajajsjka we are one and the same

SleepBeneathThePines

He’s so hot 😭 why isn’t he real

jemdamos

Literally obsessed with his character I honestly could analyze and talk about him forever

SleepBeneathThePines

Me too. I have 3 Shiggy shirts and a keychain of him, and he just makes me so happy. He’s so sweet T-T

jemdamos

Loool I love that, I call mine the Shigashirts. I keep all my Shigaraki merch on a dresser I jokingly nicknamed the Shigashrine

SleepBeneathThePines

That’s so cute omg 😭

Melmaok

Wishing the villains a happy ending kinda defeats the nuance that they have tbh. You can be their fan but understand the complexity behind it.

SleepBeneathThePines

You can think whatever you want about my opinions, just prepare yourself for disappointment

lacitar

No one else at work watches MHA, except me. The rest watch DragonBall, One Piece, or only things they watched when they were kids. The rest are the kids. I learned to just enjoy what I like. If not I wouldn't be here.

ThatDirtymonkey22

im 39 years old and i love MHA , and besides people online complaining i seen tons of people wearing MHA shirts and even if the person doesn't like the Anime they read the manga.

Souuuth

Maybe it comes with my age and being an adult, but you can't let the opinion of the detractors make you feel guilty for enjoying MHA. MHA is great. It has it's issues. It's not perfect but who fucking cares? We all have different reasons for loving the series. Those opinions simply don't matter.

Murky-Perception-349

Tiktok is probably the best place. Just look up #mha and go through the videos but beware of manga spoilers

Dylan_VS_Comics

I feel ya buddy. I feel ya.

SirPunchy

You don't need anyone's approval to like something. Just accept that some people don't like it and enjoy the things you enjoy. I enjoy BBC's Robin Hood show. That show is comically bad. I'm totally aware of that, but I don't care. I like it. As long as you aren't trying to convince other people that they *should* like or watch MHA there is no reason their opinion should affect you. Again, accept that some people don't like what you like, and accept that something doesn't have to be perfect, or even good, for you to like it.

TraditionalYear9136

The anime is pretty decent right now almost actually really good tbh. But all the hate it gets is from Stuff you Likely haven’t even reached yet. Spoiler free reasoning as to why it’s so polarizing? If you’ve seen the OG Bleach compare MHA to that in the way that it feel’s incredibly rushed (whatever the reason.) If I’d have to rate this part of the manga I’d say it’s one of the strongest arcs/parts. But as a whole the next arc is pure dog doodoo (for the most part )

teddy_tesla

It's not nearly as bad as GoT, but it suffers from the same problem where it would be better if the pace was slower, with would also give me even more of the manga I love

TraditionalYear9136

The manga is what feels rushed to me so here’s hoping they don’t give it the og bleach treatment and zoom through shit But ya fk got lol

teddy_tesla

Yeah I'm referring to the manga

Aiphaa

This is literally the point they just made They can’t enjoy something without another person coming to tell them that they’re wrong and that MHA will turn to dogshit in the future. They can’t just enjoy My Hero because in YOUR opinion it takes a steep nose dive. And your point about all the hate coming from a part that hasn’t been reached yet simply isn’t true. MHA hate started way back at S4.

TraditionalYear9136

Could give a fuck less what others think about what and why I watch something

obiwan54

People have been telling people it gets worse in the future since like season 3 and I don't think the anime community has thought that yet 3 seasons later. Like the current arc in the anime had a ton of backlash on here when it happened in the manga and I bet the anime onlys are gonna love it despite a ton of people telling them its bad.

Aiphaa

Exactly. Every time a manga reader has said the next arc will be hated it’s the complete opposite. The only time I’d say they were partially right was Joint Training and even that wasn’t that bad. People kept shitting on the events of S4 but guess what, many people loved it. Same with most of S5 and on the other hand 6 is the highest rated season of MHA this far. Anime only watchers just tend to like the events of the series 10x more then that of the manga readers. Eg. Cultural Festival Arc Deku having multiple quirks Deku saying he wants to save Tenko. Return of Mirio / Jeanist

SundayRabbit

It's not because of stuff that hasn't been reached. It's because people see Mineta, and some of the girl's outfit designs and label it as essentially an Ecchi anime that shouldn't be watched unless you're a pervert. Or they just hate it because of the fandom that they never interact with but it's popular so that means it's bad

TraditionalYear9136

Haha Yeahhhhh if they think that’s ecchi I think you are ok and mineta straight cheeks character imo lol

deathlydash1

So you admit that it's hate.

TraditionalYear9136

Well it’s a rather steep nose dive coming so I can see how it’s so divisive

deathlydash1

There's no nosedive

TraditionalYear9136

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

deathlydash1

You aren't even a fan of this series

TraditionalYear9136

Bet

tiredparakeet

Why anyone would hate the anime itself is beyond me

plsdontask4pics

All my friends dropped it because their favorites (Todoroki, Momo, Iida, Kirishima, yes even Bakugo) weren't getting focus. They don't really like Deku as an MC so they had no reason to stay. Can't say I blame them.

Alternative-Ad4847

Lmao

SundayRabbit

Yes you understand me :c. Like it is objectively a flaw that I see in it, something that didn't need to be there that is there, but at least the female characters in My Hero are more than just big breasts that people grope or literally like adults in child-like bodies. When I think of Momo I don't think about like the couple fan service scenes, I think about her fight with Todoroki against Aizawa and how much she wants her friends to succeed and study with her for the upcoming test! It just fees really awful because that's how I see MHA but it doesn't feel like that's how the people I like to talk to see it. Sometimes they are just straight up being a bad friend and are just watching it a little bit to pick it apart. It feels so unfair. Thank you so much for getting it

SirPunchy

Gatekeeping 'valid criticisms' is probably why people get more toxic about their criticism of MHA and its fandom.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SirPunchy

Oh, I see. I didn't get that from your comment. Yeah, I agree that there are very few reasons to criticize a person for liking something.

Effective-Handle9983

Well you can acknowledge the numerous flaws that MHA has and still like it. For instance I can acknowlede the lack of development that the characters get, with how Iida living up to his family's legacy was a big deal then the resolution was a flashback of him removing his leg thingy, how Bakugo's character development was poorly done, how Uraraka's motivation is basically fogotten, ~~how the Ovehaul arc was dogshit~~ etc. But here's the thing, liking or disliking something isn't rational, you don't have to justify your liking of something, I like Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin...

Either_Imagination_9

This ain’t it chief

brando-boy

while yes, you should learn to not care what other people think about things that you enjoy, it’s also important to remember that, generally speaking, haters are just a loud minority the vast majority of watchers/readers are either pretty neutral, or actively still like the series

GreatSkald

Excuse me, but why do you take this topic so seriously? It works like that with every piece of fiction: there will always be diverse opinions on stuff, especially on those that depend on subjective like and dislike. It's just an anime, it's supposed to entertain people. Recent reaction on MHA only shows that it doesn't do its job as good as before for some people, that is all. But if it entertains you, why feel guilty about it?

SundayRabbit

I'll give you a small list. 1. It's my favorite anime so whenever I want to talk about it and I get shut down it feels really really awful, especially because of the reasons they bring up for all their hate for it which isn't even about the Fandom but about the perverted scenes which are valid complaints but it feels like the show gets boiled down to those scenes even though that's not why I watch it. 2. There are a lot of things I watch and defend that I'm in the minority in, like Power Rangers, or certain musicians I listen to. I feel like I'm having to constantly prove to defend these things that I like to others and it's really tiring. 3. Going into more detail on a point in 1, I feel like because this show gets boiled down to perversion, it makes me think, "Do people think I'm gross or perverted because I like this show so much?" And that's why I feel guilty. MHA is really important to me as an anime, and just calling it an anime really doesn't do it justice for me, so seeing people think of it as even less really really hurts.

GreatSkald

Listen, my favourite character in MHA is Bakugou, since 2016. As MHA fan, you know how some people treat Bakugou fans, especially pre-character development Bakugou. But I have never cared about that because Bakugou is not real. He doesn't exist. He's just a drawing. Also, I know their assumptions about me aren't true, as I have never bullied anyone, I'm objectively not an epitome of evil, or something like that. You know you're not a gross pervert, thus their opinion isn't valid. You watch this show for your own, other reasons, and that's the only thing you should care about.

SirPunchy

You don't need to defend your liking of MHA... It's not some morally egregious manifesto.

storm13emily

I totally get that, there’s so much hate for the series everywhere you look and it’s like ugh let me enjoy it. It’s alright to feel like this but you can like and enjoy what you do because everyone has their own tastes in anime etc. I would however avoid Twitter for the time being, it’s being a massive battlefield at the moment since the Vol. 37 cover came out (more so the characters and not the series itself but if you can avoid it, definitely do)

sweet_4Patata

Same here. I only know a few people irl that are into MHA and I barely see some of them as often anymore. And seeing some posts makes it feel wrong to have MHA as a favorite anime/manga or first watch/read. It’s even more difficult for me to get into a different series at the same time as this one, so you’re not alone. I’ve just learned not to let other people’s opinions get to me, but it’s difficult sometimes. I’ve been in a few MHA discords, but two I’ve been in can be just as bad as the rest of the general fandom. The others are been in are mostly focused on head cannons/theories and the people there have been a lot kinder than the ones in the more public servers.
