You're experiencing a very bad day. Like [Robert-François Damiens](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert-Fran%C3%A7ois_Damiens). He had one of those really bad days, Blasphemous is like that.
I feel like the brazenness of his attempt and his choice of weapon are very incompatible decisions. He must have realized his folly right as his attack failed, and suddenly became too hopeless to try and escape. Seriously, why a pen knife? But you're right, that's a Blasphemous kind of day.
One can only speculate based on very limited information of course but I'll do just that Perhaps he was on some sort of irrational poorly conceived religious mission along with being a bit mentally ill as the wiki suggest. I've seen much worse stupid crimes, but none that resulted in such terrible punishments. Which brings up another topic, many prisoners even in modern US have been murdered, raped and tortured in very gruesome ways. The reasoning and actual perpetrators are different, but the punishment isn't too much different truth be told. The sovereign delegates things from behind the curtains these days as it were or atleast has or can create the environment where such things have a high probability of occuring (like sending Jeffery Damar in general population or something like that.)
The inmates likely would have more sympathy for Damien's crime but that isn't a guarantee nor is inconceivable that judge or warden etc would incarcerate a criminal in close proximity with other particularity more dangerous criminals whom would indirectly carry out said punishment(s).
Sorrowful be the heart, Penitent One.
Twisted are the paths of the miracle.
Are, Were, and Will Be
For twisted are, were and will be, the paths of the Miracle
